J.J. Abrams teamed up once again with Loststar Josh Hollowayto bring a new kind of detective story to HBO. Dusterstarred Holloway and Rachel Hilson in the 1970s crime thriller. Holloway plays Jim, a getaway driver who ends up crossing paths with Nina (Hilson), an FBI detective on a mission. The dynamic between Hilson and Holloway led to plenty of fun interactions and exciting scenes between the two actors for fans to explore. Yet despite the positive response to the series, it wasn't enough to save the show. Still, it is ranking high in the HBO charts and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.

Dusterhas bitten the dust. The Josh Holloway-Rachel Hilson period action thriller, which was co-created by J.J. Abrams, will not be returning for a second season of adventure. Despite critical acclaim, the series did not manage to find a steady audience, and has been cancelled by the newly rebranded HBO Max. The series was originally greenlit in 2020, and was filmed some time ago; the show's cast and crew have since moved on to other projects.
Deadline reports that Bad Robot, Abrams' production company, did attempt to shop the series to other platforms and streamers, but did not come to an agreement with any of them. In a statement, the network expressed gratitude to "amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. Exclusive: After a five-year build-up, it was a short run for Bad Robot’s 1970s crime drama Duster as HBO Max is not proceeding with a second season of the series from J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan. The news comes less than a week after the Season 1 finale debuted on the platform.
It is not entirely surprising because Duster, starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson, wasn’t able to generate a lot of buzz and viewer interest. Those who tuned in, largely liked what they saw — Duster is averaging 92% among critics and 83% among general viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The series from Warner Bros. and Abrams’ studio-based Bad Robot also remains in the daily Top 10 on HBO Max but it has not been able to get into the Nielsen Top 10 for streaming originals and barely cracked Luminate’s list of Top 50 streaming originals in its fourth week at the last #50 spot.

J. J. Abrams' Dusterkeeps going strong on the streaming charts, and fans of shows like Justified couldn't be happier.
Per Flix Patrol, Duster, from creators J. J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan, the latter of whom serves as showrunner, is continuing to make its mark on the streaming charts. As of the time of writing, Duster has made its way to the number four spot on the top streaming chart for HBO Max for July 5, and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down.
Released on May 15, Duster is set back in 1972 and stars Rachel Hilson as Nina Hayes, the very first Black female FBI agent. Hilson's Agent Hayes works alongside Josh Holloway's Jim Ellis, an exceptionally talented driver with a penchant for making hasty getaways, as she attempts to uproot and stomp out the Southern crime syndicate run by Keith David's Ezra Saxton. This post contains spoiler from the Duster season finale on Max.
We’ve arrived at the season finale of Duster on Max. As we left off last week, it was clear the house of lies built by Nina (Rachel Hilson) and Jim (Josh Holloway) as they investigate Saxton (Keith David) had come crashing down. But could they find a way to survive? That’s the question we had to answer during this week’s finale, “66 Reno Split.” Let’s dive in and see how it turned out.
We open this week by flashing back to South Philly in 1954. There, Saxton is threatening Virgil Hayes (Kenneth Mosely). Seems Virgil isn’t keeping up his end of the numbers-running racket. Young Nina watches the exchange. It’s not long before her father ends up dead, providing the fuel that’s led to her choice of career and current situation.

You have your monsters like zombies, vampires, and werewolves and then you have your monsters like Dr. Frankenstein, Ardeth Bay, and Jack Griffin. While we may gripe that Werewolves and certainly Mummies don’t get nearly the representation they are due, they still show up at a higher frequency than we give them credit for either in things like The Monster Squad or their own series like the Brendan Fraser Mummy films or the Underworld flicks. The two classic series monsters that most seem to be forgotten about either with their film output or quality of roles are undoubtedly The Phantom of the Opera and The Invisible Man. While I could talk all day about Phantom of the Mall or Phantom of the Paradise, 2025 marks a 25th anniversary for a bonkers and yet somehow faithful in tone mad scientist that breaks the laws of physics and makes not only his physical appearance,...

With Heroes: Eclipsed officially in the works, longtime fans of NBC’s genre-defining superhero series Heroes are wondering if any of the original cast might make a return. For Ali Larter, who played several of the show’s most iconic and mysterious roles — including Niki Sanders, Jessica, and Tracy Strauss — the idea of revisiting Heroes comes with mixed emotions. At the Newport Beach TV Festival, Larter spoke to Collider’s Aidan Kelley about her current success in Landman and whether she’d be interested in returning to the franchise that helped launch her into pop culture immortality.

Some men are born to run from trouble. Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) seems like the kind who’d invite it to dinner, serve it whiskey, and play cards with it till dawn. I didn’t think Duster could get more chaotically thrilling, but episode 4, titled Criminalus Velocitus Super-Sonicus, proved me wrong and how gloriously.
It’s the kind of episode that doesn’t politely ask for your attention. It walks in unannounced, kicks the coffee table, and demands you watch closely. Because if you blink, you’ll miss a contract killer sipping whiskey with his target, a guilt-ridden agent chasing coordinates like a scavenger hunt, and a father-son dynamic more dented than the vintage car they wrecked.
Ellis, hilariously tragic and charmingly idiotic, finds himself hunted by Enrico the Blade, while Nina Hayes, our resolute agent with a soul far too heavy for her shoulders, tries to decode what looks...

Often in series television, we make progress in the tiniest of increments. That’s certainly the case with Duster, the new series on Max. In the third episode, we got some progress, but it feels like some small, incremental steps. Still, any progress is good progress, right?
Let’s dive into this week’s episode of Duster.
A knife at the throat
The show has a thing for jumping to a crucial point then rewinding to show how we got there. We got it last week with Jim (Josh Holloway) and the body in the desert. This week, it’s Nina’s (Rachel Hilson) turn. We have our cold open with her in a dark kitchen, a knife and an angry man at her throat. It doesn’t look good, but quickly we spring to the opening credits.

The new series Duster is off to a strong start on Max. After two episodes, the show is holding a strong score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans are waiting to see what will happen next in episode three.
New episodes of Duster drop on Thursdays at 9 Pm Et, exclusively on Max. Heading into the premiere of the third episode, Cbr can unveil an exclusive sneak peek clip, hinting at what's to come. The clip features Awan's (Asivak Koostachin) admiration for Superman, as shown by the wallet he carries, which seems to get him a little bit of razzing. Even so, he will never tolerate anyone "disparaging" the Man of Steel, explaining how his love for Clark Kent actually improves his work as an agent. Fans can watch the video below.

The HBO Max thriller series Duster has been impressing the critics since premiering on streaming earlier this month. After two episodes, the show has been maintaining a near-perfect score with the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Currently, Duster has an approval rating of 92%, labeling the show as Certified Fresh. Its audience score is also strong, sitting at 81%. The new series, a crime drama set in the early 1970s, is noted to not be without its flaws by critics. Even so, almost every critic is satisfied with the series, with many describing it as a fun throwback to the kinds of movies that are from the era.
"With a tangy 1970s look and feel, Duster shifts gears confidently between violent cliffhanger crises and knockabout humor," TV Insider critic Matt Roush said of the show. "Strap in for the joyride."

After the events of the first episode, we know Jim (Josh Holloway) and Nina (Rachel Hilson) have their work cut out for them if they’re going to bring down Saxton (Keith David) and his crew. How does that work progress in episode 2 on HBO? Well, it’s not without its challenges. Let’s dive into this week’s action in Duster season 1 episode 2, "Suspicious Minds." Spoilers Below.
Duster on Max A grave in the desert
Living near Phoenix, especially a less developed city in the early 1970s, has its advantages. It means you’re never far from a desolate place to stash a body. That turns out to come in handy for Jim as he’s burying someone—or trying to—as we open the episode. But it’s not easy. His shovel breaks. Then, another car comes up on him. Is he cooked?

Abrams and Latoya Morgan, is set in 1972 Phoenix, with Holloway as a getaway driver for a mob boss and Rachel Hilson as a rookie FBI agent who’s dead set on making him her confidential informant.
Here’s who plays who on the series and where you might have seen them before.

The actor, who broke out as con man James “Sawyer” Ford on “Lost,” is back as another guy named Jim on the wrong side of the law. Many questions were raised when Warner Bros. initially announced “HBO Max” (and then “Max”) as the name of its big streaming platform.
The first and most obvious question was, “Why take a brand name as established and curated as HBO and dilute it with proximity to this much corporate flotsam and jetsam?”
Somewhere among the top five questions, though, was “Wait, can you use ‘Max’ when HBO already has ‘Cinemax’ as a corporate sibling?”
HBO’s disreputable younger brother, Cinemax attempted to shed or expand on its “Skinemax” reputation with a fairly successful run of originals between 2011 and 2019, a small group that included Strike Back, Banshee, The Knick, Warrior, Quarry and Jett. Cinemax originals were gussied-up B-movies in the best way possible — pulpy genre exercises with one or two-word titles perfect for splashing across posters or battered, well-read paperbacks.

Greg Grunberg is being transparent about his health.
The 58-year-old actor explained to fans in a recent video that he reason he suddenly went bald is due to alopecia.
“I, all of a sudden, got alopecia and I knew nothing about it. I’m still learning about it,” he said.
The Heroes star said he believes that the hair-loss disease was triggered by his knee-replacement surgery.
“I think it shocked the alopecia into, you know, actually presenting itself. I think I probably had it dormant in my body for a long time,” he said.
Greg is also keeping a positive attitude about his condition, and has done extensive research about coping strategies.

If you're worried that there won't be anything to watch on HBO or Max this month as the lead up to the summer months begins, we're here to make sure your watch lists stay stocked. Sure, it's been a bit quieter over on Max since the season finales of The White Lotus and The Pitt, but there's a lot to look forward to in May 2025, including three new shows and two more can't-miss season finale.
First up, let's talk about these season finales, because they're coming up quickly and will be here before we know it! Obviously, none of us want The Last of Us season 2 to end, but the shorter season means that the finale will unfortunately come sooner. The game-changing second season, which saw the death of a majorly beloved character drops its season finale on Sunday, May 25. In case you need some levity that evening, The Rehearsal...

Ready for a wild ride? That's what J.J. Abrams’ Duster looks like it's going to deliver, with high-stakes action, gritty drama, and a compelling story set against the backdrop of 1970s America. Slated to premiere on Max on May 15, here's everything you need to know about this new original series.
Ordered by Max in 2023, Duster is described as a crime thriller. It's created by Abrams and Latoya Morgan. You might know Abrams for co-creating shows such as Felicity, Lost and Fringe. He also created the beloved TV show Alias, which starred Jennifer Garner in the leading role. Morgan, on the other hand, is known for writing for shows like Parenthood, Shameless, Into the Badlands and The Walking Dead. With these two talented creatives at the helm, I'd say Duster is in very capable hands.
Now, let's take a look at the thrilling, action-packed trailer for a sneak peek of what's to come!

Max has dropped the official trailer for Duster, J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan’s high-octane crime drama series starring Lost alum Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson.
Set in the 1970s Southwest, Duster explores the life of a gutsy getaway driver (Holloway) for a growing crime syndicate (headed by Keith David’s Ezra Saxton) that goes from dangerous to wildly, stupidly dangerous when a tenacious young agent (Hilson) comes into town hellbent on taking his crime family down.
‘How do you feel about violence?”, asks David’s Ezra Saxton as the trailer opens, followed by sounds of engines revving and tires screeching. It only gets wilder from there.
In addition to Holloway, HIlson and David, cast also includes Sydney Elisabeth, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, and Benjamin Charles Watson.

Lost’s Josh Holloway is ready to treat crowds to multiple projects as he prepares to go West for an adaptation of Louis L’Amour’s novel Flint. Cameras spin up later this year in New Mexico on the newly-announced film written and directed by Ryan Whitaker, which finds Holloway leading the Western as James Kettleman, “a ruthless East Coast businessman,” who, according to Deadline‘s exclusive report, “returns to the unforgiving New Mexico frontier, adopts the name Flint, which belonged to the notorious killer who raised him. In addition to taking the lead role for Flint, Holloway is producing the project alongside Ken Carpenter, Mark Pentecost (The Mulligan), Jerilyn Esquibel, and Beau L’Amour, the son of Louis L’Amour.

Max has released new details along with photos and a teaser for two-time Emmy winner J.J. Abrams (Lost) and Latoya Morgan’s new series Duster, starring Lost‘s Josh Holloway. The drama is set to premiere on May 15, 2025, with new episodes of the eight-episode season streaming on Thursdays at 9pm Et/6pm Pt.
Discussing reuniting with Holloway on a new project, Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter he called Holloway five years ago with a very specific question. “‘Would you ever want to do a show where you play a driver for some kind of criminal organization?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So the whole time we were writing this, it was always with Josh in mind. He’s someone I just love working with. And with age, I think he’s gotten even more comfortable with his wry swagger and toughness, and also vulnerability and being unsure of himself. It’s a tough balancing act.

The new teaser trailer for Duster was released today (seen below), and showcases all the action and drama we can expect from Abrams' new creation, which definitely seems more R-rated than some of his previous offerings. We catch a glimpse of the first meeting between Holloway's character Jim and FBI agent Nina (Rachel Hilson) before things get wild. Sex, drugs, and action are all front and center in the new series, as is Holloway's trademark charm.

J.J. Abrams and Josh Holloway’s long-awaited reunion may be a bit more stylish than fans of “Lost” were expecting. Max dropped the first trailer for “Duster” on Wednesday, revealing that the ’70s crime caper showrun by Latoya Morgan will premiere May 15.
“Duster” takes place in the American Southwest during the 1970s and follows a getaway driver for a crime syndicate (Holloway). But when a tenacious FBI agent dead-set on taking down the operation sets her sights on him, this already-risky line of work becomes a lot more intense.
“How long you been at this?” Holloway’s character says in the first trailer. “It’s my second day,” Rachel Hilson’s FBI agent responds.
“Well, here’s a little heads up. You’re going to have a s–tty Day 3,” Holloway shoots back.
The trailer then darts between several scenes that capture classic ’70s crime motifs. One minute, someone is...

Before he became the guy who helped revitalize "Star Trek" on the big screen, resurrected "Star Wars" for a whole new generation with "The Force Awakens", and nearly blinded us with all those lens flares along the way, J.J. Abrams established himself as one of the most promising TV directors and writers in the industry with "Lost." Over 20 years later, he's finally returning to the scene of the crime. Oh, and he's bringing a very familiar face along for the ride, too.
The upcoming HBO series "Dusters," starring "Lost" alum Josh Hollaway, appears to be the payoff to that extremely lucrative deal Abrams signed with Warner Bros. many years ago (which counted the ambitious-sounding "Demimonde" among its main casualties). This new show appears to have dodged that fate, however, which is great news for those of us who've been saying that Abrams' storytelling sensibilities are perhaps best suited to the medium of television.

J.J. Abrams' first writing project since Star Wars came together like jazz. Collaborating with accomplished screenwriter Latoya Morgan (whom you may know from The Walking Dead), the Lost creator has re-teamed with Josh Holloway — the star of that show — to bring to life Duster, a new Max drama series set to thrill its way onto our screens later this year. And in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, we finally have a new look and further details into the retro crime story about an FBI agent and a getaway driver trying to take down an impressively run crime syndicate.
Calling the story a "fun pastiche of action and humor," Duster tells the following story, according to its official logline:
In 1972, the first Black female FBI agent heads to the Southwest and recruits a gutsy getaway driver in a bold effort to take down a growing crime syndicate.

J.J. Abrams is back with the first project he’s co-written in six years. The Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director has teamed with fellow writer and executive producer Latoya Morgan for a Max drama series that reunites Abrams with his Lost star Josh Holloway.
Set in 1972, the series follows the first Black female FBI agent (Rachel Hilson) as she heads to the Southwest and recruits a gutsy getaway driver (Holloway) in a bold effort to take down a growing crime syndicate (led by Keith David). But as is often the case with projects that Abrams has worked on, things aren’t quite as straightforward as they might initially seem.
Josh Holloway in Duster.
The result is an upbeat and poppy retro crime thriller that warmly showcases its ’70s esthetic and features Hilson as a playfully tough Fed and Holloway being his cockily charismatic self.
For Abrams,...

J.J. Abrams signed a deal with Warner Bros. that is smaller than his previous deal in 2019, signaling the end of the mega-deal in Hollywood.
J.J. Abrams, the creator of hit shows like Lost who has worked on big-name franchise films like Star Wars and Star Trek, has undoubtedly accomplished a lot in his career. However--according to Variety, Warner Bros., the studio he's been working for since 2006, have signed a new deal with him for quite a bit less than previous deals, described as "more modest." The deal Abrams signed in 2019 with Warner Bros. was a five-year pact to the tune of an estimated $500 million. The deal was written in such a way that allowed Abrams to use a significant pool of money to get other writers signed for their own deals. However, due to Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, failing to meet certain financial and output milestones, he won't...
