Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons the Movie Trailer Brings R-Rated DC Animated Action
Image
A new trailer for Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons has arrived online. This latest DC animated feature is interesting as it started life as a short-form series on CW Seed. But more than 50 minutes of footage has been added, given fans an entire movie to enjoy. The trailer showcases the R-rated adventure to come, with Slade Wilson getting his hands very dirty on a quest to save his family.

The trailer opens up with Slade Wilson's transformation into the assassin known as Deathstroke. Things get action-heavy in a hurry before we find the mercenary put in a tough spot. A large body count is racked up, plenty of bullets fly and there is quite a bit of emotion layered in to break up the violence. Even though this came to life in a non-traditional way, converting a series into a full-length movie, it looks to be in line with what we...

Deathstroke Animated Series Trailer Debuts, Michael Chiklis To Star
With Manu Bennett’s Slade Wilson unlikely to return for Arrow‘s eighth and final season and the character now being played by Esai Morales over on DC Universe’s Titans, The CW somehow managed to have him remain in the Arrowverse in some fashion. Ingeniously enough, the Deathstroke animated series we’ve been hearing about for some time will serve that purpose.

In the tradition of Vixen, Freedom Fighters: The Ray and Constantine: City of Demons, Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons will be the next animated web series to air on The CW Seed online streaming site. No concrete premiere date has been given at the time of this writing, but the first of twelve episodes will air beginning sometime in the first quarter of 2020.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ten years ago, Slade Wilson—aka the super-assassin called Deathstroke—made a tragic mistake and his wife and son paid a terrible price.

‘The Purge: Anarchy’ Review
Stars: Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, Zoë Soul, Justina Machado, John Beasley, Jack Conley, Noel Gugliemi, Castulo Guerra, Michael K. Williams, Edwin Hodge, Keith Stanfield, Roberta Valderrama, Niko Nicotera | Written and Directed by James DeMonaco

Written and directed by James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first film, The Purge: Anarchy takes the concept that was born in the 2012 Ethan Hawke fronted movie and turns it on its head, changing its style and putting us in the thick of the action, on the streets of a city in the midst of the annual purge.

The Purge, as a concept, is that once a year, the United States government sanctions one night in which all crime is legal, most weapons are allowed, and people can “cleanse” themselves of feelings of anger, hatred and other negative stuff. In other words, you or I could, in this universe, go to...

Revisiting Star Trek Tng: The Price
Review James Hunt 25 Apr 2014 - 09:53

Warning: this episode of Tng might turn your stomach...

This review contains spoilers.

3.8 The Price

The episode opens with Troi collecting her voicemail, because that is a thing people still do in the future. After deleting all of the messages from her mother and ignoring junk mail about a new psychology study, she sits down and starts asking the replicator for "real" chocolate, which confuses the replicator because what else would it make? Unreal chocolate?

Having finally established Troi's secondary character trait (they've all got one. Riker plays the Trombone, Geordi is a holo-pervert, Data owns a cat, and so on.), the focus shifts to Picard, who is hosting a reception ahead of some trade negotiations. The Barzan people have discovered the galaxy's one and only stable wormhole, direct to the Gamma Quadrant. Everyone is excited about this, because it means they can travel...

Remembering Elmore Leonard: ‘Stick’ is fine pop entertainment
Stick

Written by Elmore Leonard and Joseph Stinson

Directed by Burt Reynolds

USA, 1985

Part of the reason that Elmore Leonard’s novels got turned into movies so often is that it was so easy to write the screenplays. Entire scenes full of Leonard’s trademark crackling dialogue would go, verbatim, into films like Get Shorty and Out of Sight. But that wasn’t true for the 1990s only. Leonard’s stellar 1983 novel Stick was turned into a movie as well, a film which served as popular entertainment as much as the films came a decade later. Where Get Shorty was 1995’s Travolta movie, Stick was 1985’s Burt Reynolds movie, and every bit as fun.

Reynolds plays Ernest “Stick” Stickley, a just-out-of-prison car thief who wanders into Miami and finds himself caught between a local drug kingpin (Castulo Guerra) and a bumbling financial planner (George Segal). Also of note: a pre-...

LatinoBuzz: 'No' starring Gael García Bernal, 'Bless Me, Ultima' and 'Los Condenados' in Theaters This Week
It’s an exciting week for Latino film. There are lots of options at theaters across the country including the Oscar nominated No (starring Gael García Bernal), the Puerto Rican thriller Los Condenados, and Bless Me, Ultima based on Rudolfo Anaya’s classic Chicano novel.

Bless Me, Ultima

Writer, Director: Carl Franklin

Starring: Miriam Colon, Luke Ganalon, Dolores Heredia, Benito Martinez, Castulo Guerra, Joaquin Cosio

Country: USA

Language: English

After a small regional release last summer, Bless Me, Ultima is now in the second week of its national release. This past weekend its box office sales passed the $1 million mark, a feat that few Latino films achieve. Last year only three Latino films were able to surpass six figures.

Synopsis:

Based on the controversial, award-winning Chicano novel by acclaimed author Rudolfo Anaya, Bless Me, Ultima is a turbulent coming-of-age story about a young boy, Antonio (Luke Ganalon), growing up in New Mexico during World War II. When a mysterious curandera (healer) named Ultima (Miriam Colon) comes to live with his family, she teaches him about the power of the spiritual world. As their relationship grows, Antonio begins to question his strict upbringing by his parents (Dolores Heredia & Benito Martinez). Through a series of mysterious and at times terrifying events, Antonio must grapple with questions about the nature of divinity and his own destiny.

Bless Me, Ultima is currently playing in over a hundred theaters in California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, and Florida.

Los Condenados (The Condemned)

Starring: Cristina Rodlo, René Monclova, Axel Anderson

Country: Puerto Rico

Language: Spanish

Synopsis:

In this haunting psychological thriller, dark and terrible secrets hidden in an old mansion stir back to life when the original owner of the house returns. Beautiful Ana travels to a remote town to transform the abandoned family mansion into a museum detailing her father’s scientific and humanitarian achievements. She discovers that the mysterious caretaker has kept the house in pristine fashion. However, the townspeople – now destitute and helpless — do not welcome her warmly. And neither does the house.

The Condemned is currently playing at the Quad Cinema in New York City and opens Friday, March 8 at Laemmle’s NoHo 7 in Los Angeles.

No

Director: Pablo Larraín

Starring: Gael García Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers

Country: Chile

Language: Spanish

It didn’t win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film but the nomination has helped build buzz for Pablo Larraín’s political drama inspired by actual events in Chilean history. Now in the third week of its theatrical release, it is expanding to many major cities beyond just New York and Los Angeles.

Synopsis:

In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote Yes or No to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the No, persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), to spearhead their campaign.

Reviewing materials already created for the campaign, René is convinced their grim, endless montages of killings, torture, tanks and tear gas will turn off voters. With the opposition outspending them an estimated 30 to 1, No must come up with campaign ads that speak to the heart of the people of Chile and motivate them go to the polls. "Everyone wants to be happy," René says in his quiet, convincing way. "Happiness" will be the campaign: "Happiness is coming if you vote No!" This approach meets resistance from colleagues who see it as an affront to the many who have suffered under Pinochet, but René confidently commissions jingles and celebrities to join in delivering the message: "Chile: happiness is coming!!!"

No is currently playing at theaters in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego and will open in other cities in the coming weeks.

Film Review: ‘Bless Me, Ultima’ Commits Sin Against Cinema
Chicago – One of the major tenets of the “memoir” genre – the type of film in which a main character is looking back at their lives – is the unforgettable character that influences them forever. New Mexico during World War II is the setting for “Bless Me, Ultima.”

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Based on a popular novel, the character of Ultima is an old woman who comes to live with her Mexican family in America. She possesses magical powers of vague proportions, and is thought of by others as a witch. For some reason, the little boy in the story (the person looking back at his life) is enamored of Ultima, except when he isn’t. The film doesn’t specifically focus on Ultima, and even though she is the title character she disappears for long stretches in the story, while other moments of the boy’s life are emphasized. There is no focus in the narrative,...

Bless Me, Ultima – The Review
Bless Me, Ultima is an interesting blend of film genres. On one hand it’s a nostalgic coming of age drama set in that golden era of the 1940′s similar to Summer Of ’42 and A Christmas Story. It recalls that simpler time that was not quite as idyllic as many remember. The film’s also a look at culture clashes with this Mexican family settling in the Us in search of a better life. Most of all Ultima is about different forms of faith. The Catholic church is a large part of this family’s life, but they still have a belief in the old ways. Namely the supernatural. They speak of it in hushed tones, whispering of witches and curses and demons. All these themes are explored in this story of a boy and a wonderous time that seems so long ago.

Antonio (Luke Ganalon) is young boy of...

Producer Mark Johnson has been successful in all avenues of the entertainment business, making movies such as the Oscar-winning Rain Man, Bugsy, Donnie Brasco, What Lies Beneath, The Rookie, The Chronicles of Narnia series, and last year's Not Fade Away, just to name a few. He is also one of the producers of the hit AMC series Breaking Bad, which wraps up its fifth and final season this summer. His latest project is much smaller in scope, but features just as powerful a story as any of those other big-budget movies.

Bless Me, Ultima centers on a young boy named Antonio (Luke Ganalon) who has an awakening of faith when his grandmother Ultima (Miriam Colon), an aging spiritual healer, comes to live with his family in this drama set against the backdrop of World War II. I recently had...

Bless This Mess: Franklin’s Period Piece Strangles Intriguing Premise

Carl Franklin returns with Bless Me, Ultima, his first feature since 2003’s Out of Time. An adaptation of a 1972 novel by Rudolfo Anaya, which is reputedly the best selling Chicano novel of all time, is actually the first novel of a trilogy, documenting the coming of age of a young boy in 1940’s New Mexico through his special relationship with an elderly family friend. Told with flourishes of magical realism depicting the mysticism and folkways of the indigenous culture of the area, this tale of a young boy’s spiritual transformation documents the vainglorious struggles of Christianity encroaching on the ways of old world pagan rituals and his subsequent disillusionment with religion. What sounds like a philosophically intriguing premise doesn’t quite translate in this bluntly conditioned film treatment that butchers a Bildungsroman into a parody of good vs. evil.

Border Crossing Horrors Abound in Chris Peckover's Undocumented
There are plenty of real life horrors out there to go along with the made-up stuff that we hold near and dear. In fact, there's probably more. Constant jokes are made about Mexican border-crossers, but the way our country is going ... pretty soon the shoe is likely to be on the other foot.
