Netflix Just Added an Intense Prison Thriller 'Cell 211'
Image
It's the first day of a new month, and you know what that means — a bevy of titles have just been added to all the streaming platforms. It's a bit of a small month for Netflix, at least in terms of older films coming to the platform for the first time. While the streamer hopes that a few of their original titles in March will be huge (specifically The Electric State and Adolescence), it's otherwise a pretty mild month of movies. Friday and Next Friday will bring the comedy, along with 50 First Dates and Ted, and Do the Right Thing will bring Spike Lee's masterpiece to the streamer; plus, the final cut of Blade Runner has just been added. They added some high-adrenaline action movies as well — Black Hawk Down, Blood and Bone, and the brilliant Sicario, along with a real delight, Cell 211.

While you've probably heard...

10 Best Shows Like Netflix's 1992
Image
Netflix's 1992 may be a unique addition to the crime thriller genre, but viewers looking for something similar to watch have a long list of shows to choose from. Created by Jorge Guerricaechevarría and Álex de la Iglesia, 1992 centers on two characters, Richi and Amparo, who form an unlikely alliance to solve a series of interconnected murder mysteries. However, the closer they get to catching the killer, the more they realize there is more to his motives than meets the eye.

1992's title comes from its past timeline, which adopts Seville Expo '92 as the primary trigger event that sets off a series of political and criminal upheavals in the future. Although the show adopts many well-worn tropes of the genre and struggles to etch its unique identity in the genre, it manages to conclude on a well-rounded note, barely leaving any plot threads hanging. Owing to this, many viewers...

Netflix's 1992 Ending Explained: The Killer's Backstory & How Fernando Victoria Was Involved
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Netflix's 1992.

Netflix's 1992 introduces one twist after another to finally reveal the truth behind the central murders and Fernando Victoria's connection to them in its ending moments. Created by Jorge Guerricaechevarría, Netflix's 1992 focuses on a widow, Amparo, and an alcoholic ex-cop, Richi, who form an unlikely alliance to solve the mystery behind a series of murders. Amparo puts her life on the line and sets out to solve the mystery because she believes her husband's death was not accidental.

Richi, on the other hand, hops on the case because he sees it as an opportunity to redeem himself. The original Netflix TV show's revelations portray it as a typical tale of revenge, where a killer sets out to punish his mother's murderers. However, towards the show's ending moments, it becomes evident that there is more to his actions than meets the eye.

‘1992’ Netflix Review: An Overlong & Tonally Inconsistent Revenge Thriller
Image
Streaming platforms prefer shows and miniseries over movies because it keeps a user engaged for a longer period of time. A viewer might watch a 90-minute film and log off, which means less activity and less revenue. But if a viewer starts a show or a miniseries, especially if it can be binged, then they’ll be logged in for upwards of 200 minutes, which means more activity and more revenue. This greed for engagement (allegedly) motivates producers and OTTs to push storytellers to turn their feature-length scripts into episodic ones. I know that that sounds wild, but if you watch a decent amount of shows and miniseries, you’ll begin to notice which of them were meant to be a movie and were then forcibly expanded into a show or miniseries. Some of them may fly under the radar, but some of them have such paper-thin plots due to all...

Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Christmas Evil

Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

The 1980 film chronicles one man’s...

“30 Coins” – How Álex de la Iglesia’s Love of Role Playing Games Shaped the HBO Series
Image
The second season of the HBO Original Series “30 Coins” is underway, plunging some of its central characters into the bowels of one ultra-cool depiction of Hell that could only come from the mind of acclaimed horror filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, Witching & Bitching, The Last Circus).

The eight-episode season of the acclaimed horror series kicked off on Max on October 23, 2023, and new episodes arrive every Monday.

Directed and co-written by Álex de la Iglesia, along with co-writer Jorge Guerricaechevarría, Max’s “30 Coins” takes viewers into a world where nothing is as it seems, and nobody can be trusted. Now, two episodes in, the characters are scattered and scrambling to pick up the pieces from last season. Worse, some of them are desperate to escape Hell itself.

Is Sister Death Based On A True Story? Real Inspirations For Sister Narcisa Explained
Image
The Spanish horror film Sister Death, released on Netflix, is not based on a true story but incorporates historical events for dramatic effect. The opening scene of Sister Death, depicting Sister Narcisa as a child with spiritual gifts, was inspired by the real-life Garabandal apparitions in the 1960s. Sister Death serves as a prequel to the true story-inspired horror film Veronica, providing the origin story of Sister Narcisa and explaining her blindness.

The events depicted in Sister Death are terrifying, leading many viewers to wonder if they were inspired by true events. The Spanish supernatural horror film was released a few days before Halloween on Netflix, following its premiere as the opener at the 56th Sitges Film Festival on October 5. The movie revolves around a novice named Sister Narcisa who starts teaching at a covenant in the 1940s after the Spanish Civil War. However, once she arrives at the all-girls school,...

“30 Coins” Fantastic Fest Review – Season 2 Plunges Straight Into the Winding Depths of Hell
Image
Writer/Director Álex de la Iglesia, co-writing with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, launched a unique biblical horror story in “30 Coins,” unfurling an overarching battle of good versus evil over the powerful set of silver that Judas once received in his betrayal of Jesus. By the inaugural season’s conclusion, the rural town of Pedraza was left devastated, its residents scattered or worse, and our protagonists in dire straits. “30 Coins” Season 2 hits the ground running in the first two episodes screened for critics at Fantastic Fest, plunging viewers into the deep end of Hell as it lays the groundwork for a densely packed season with apocalyptic stakes.

Season 2 picks up immediately where Season 1 ended, with the restored collection of silver scattered once more thanks to the sacrifice of rogue priest Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández). His body gets collected by a black arts practitioner who sets about prepping his body for a resurrection ritual.

The Fear Collection: Alex de la Iglesia, Jaume Balaguero, Paco Plaza anthology now on VOD
Image
Three years ago, we heard that genre regular Álex de la Iglesia – whose credits include creating the HBO horror series 30 Coins – had signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video and Sony Pictures International Productions to produce a series of feature-length horror films under the banner of The Fear Collection. The collection has turned out to consist of de la Iglesia’s own Veneciafrenia, Jaume Balaguero’s Venus, and Paco Plaza’s La Abuela – and all three films are now available on VOD, including on Amazon’s Prime Video!

De la Iglesia, who made his feature directorial debut with Accion Mutante in 1993, directed Veneciafrenia (watch it Here) from a screenplay he wrote with Jorge Guerricaechevarría. This one explores the profound connection...

Review: Álex de la Iglesia’s Sci-Fi Satire Acción Mutante on Severin Films 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Álex de la Iglesia in Messi (2014)
As diverse in style and content as they are, Álex de la Iglesia’s films do share a few notable characteristics: an adrenaline-rush narrative propulsion, a penchant for startling left-hand swerves in their storylines, and an almost gleeful willingness to offend more delicate sensibilities when it comes to depictions of sex, violence, and religion. This holds true from the start of his career. De la Iglesia’s feature debut, the scrappy sci-fi satire Acción Mutante, revels in the chaos of his anarchic sensibilities, even if its critique of religion is mostly limited to a hysterical takedown of the sanctity of marriage.

In a future society dominated by the cult of health and beauty, the disenfranchised have been forced underground, turning to acts of terrorism against the ableist establishment. The most notorious of these bands of brothers is the so-called Mutant Action group, whom we meet in the middle of the...

For the Best Horror TV Right Now, Look Beyond the Stories Told in English
Image
It’s long been likely — and in the past year closer to an almost certainty — that Netflix’s true TV strength lies in its international series. Aside from the rare organic word-of-mouth runaway sensation, these shows rarely get the publicity or attention that their star-studded, algorithm-optimized counterparts enjoy. For other streaming services with a similar wealth in their libraries, those international series also tend to be afterthoughts.

Yet, with fall upon us and the annual search for stories that pair well with chillier nights and decor the color of dying leaves, it’s also a perfect time to sample the global TV just right for the season. Particularly when it comes to horror series, these shows have a knack for combining the universal and the specific. They tap into what unsettles us, digging into our subconscious from painfully particular perspectives.

Some are designed to weigh heavy on your soul, while...

Paul Giamatti Joins Season 2 Cast Of HBO Max’s ‘30 Coins’
Image
Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of 30 Coins, the Spanish mystery horror series that premiered on HBO Max in 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February. The eight-part Season 2 is now in production in Spain, Italy, the U.S., France and the UK, with a 2023 premiere date planned on HBO Max worldwide and on HBO in the U.S.

The series, which hails from Álex de la Iglesia who directs and co-writes with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, centers on Father Vergara, an exorcist, boxer and ex-convict, who is exiled by the church to a remote town in Spain. He becomes linked to a series of mysterious paranormal events in the village, and with Paco, the town’s naive mayor, and Elena, a restless veterinarian, they become caught up in a global conspiracy: a battle for control of the 30 silver coins paid to the apostle Judas Iscariot for the betrayal...

Image
Alex de la Iglesia’s latest production, feature “Four’s a Crowd,” is being brought onto the Cannes Film Market by Filmax, which has acquired international sales rights.

Described by Filmax as a “wild romantic comedy,” “Four’s a Crowd” turns on Julian, a 50-year-old divorced man who starts to use an app to share his car with strangers and most especially Lorena, a young woman with whom Julian would like to share much more.

He’s about to open up to Lorena when he’s lumbered unexpectedly with a fourth passenger, possibly the most annoying person on the planet, who sparks a radical change in the course of events.

“Four’s a Crowd” is “a very personal reflection on human joy and misery, where nothing is as it seems,” Filmax said in a statement.

Written with De La Iglesia’s career-long co-scribe Jorge Guerricaechevarría, “Four’s a Crowd” is produced by Pokeepsie Films,...

Banijay Strikes Deal With Pokeepsie Films, Spanish Scripted Firm Behind HBO Max’s ’30 Coins’
Image
Banijay Iberia is getting into Spanish horror drama after striking a partnership deal with Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s scripted producer Pokeepsie Films. Deadline understands Banijay has made an equity investment in the Madrid-based company, which is behind HBO Max mystery horror drama 30 Coins.

Producer/director de la Iglesia and actress/producer Bang created Pokeepsie in 2009 and focus on youth-facing content, primarily in the fantasy, thriller and horror genres. Their deal with Banijay will give Pokeepsie stronger distribution capacilities.

“Today sees Banijay Iberia and Pokeepsie Films carve a common path with the purpose of building an ambitious slate of original fiction led by Álex and Carolina,” said Banijay Iberia CEO Pilar Blasco. “In adding this brilliant duo to our creative network in Spain and Portugal, we further boost our offering in the region and cement our position as a home where talent can be creatively free and subsequently,...

Malaga Festival Spanish Screenings: 8 Takes, From Rampant Growth to a $1.8 Billion Hub Plan and Buzz Titles
Image
Launched in 1998, the Malaga Film Festival first grabbed attention as a Spanish movie showcase and birthplace of a Spanish star system, TV actors walking a red carpet to acclaim from milling throngs.

Under Juan Antonio Vigar, director from 2013, it has consolidated as a platform for a new generation of Spanish filmmakers while adding ever increasing industry heft – co-pro forums, WIPs, a Hack digital forum initiative – and also opening up to TV.

In 2021, however, Malaga Festival and Spanish Screenings have exploded in scale, impact and attendance. The narrative of this year’s event is largely one of that growth. Eight takes on this and other Malaga highlights:

Malaga Lifts Off

Little wonder Malaga forms part of what’s now the Spanish Screenings Xxl. In its first full edition since 2019 with festival and industry onsite and aligned, Malaga has truly taken off. It received almost 2,000 film and TV submissions, says Vigar. Attendance has skyrocketed to over 1,100 delegates,...

Javier Bardem, ‘The Good Boss’ Top Spain’s 2022 Goya Awards
Image
Shortlisted for the Academy Awards in the international feature film category, Fernando León de Aranoa’s “The Good Boss” capped a record 20 Spanish Academy Goya nominations by scoring best picture and actor for Javier Bardem at Saturday’s Goya prize ceremony.

The prizes marked both Leon and Bardem’s seventh Goya wins. Produced by El Reposado and The Mediapro Studio, and a workplace dramedy skewering the abuse of power practised by a seemingly benign factory owner, “The Good Boss” also won best director and original screenplay for León, as well as best score and editing.

Blanca Portillo beat out “Parallel Mothers’” Oscar-nominated Penélope Cruz, thanks to Portillo’s powerful performance as Maixabel Lasa, the real life widow of former Basque Country governor Juan Mari Jauregui who agreed in 2011 to meet one of his Eta killers. Her forgiveness, and Portillo’s portrait, has touched a large nerve in Spain.

Shooting for the globetrotting series will take place in Spain, Italy, the U.S., France and the U.K., with the second season scheduled to launch in 2023.

Rumors of a second season have been around since last September, when de la Iglesia and Pokeepsie Films, his production company, tweeted photos of the director in the quaint city square where the action in “30 Coins” kicked off,...

HBO Max Greenlights Second Season Of Spanish Mystery Horror ‘30 Coins’
Image
HBO Max has commissioned a second season of Álex de Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría’s mystery horror 30 Coins.

Principal photography will begin later this month on the eight-parter, which will air next year.

The series will pick up from the end of season one, which dropped on the platform in late 2020. Most of the people of Pedraza have lost their minds, confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena lies in a Madrid hospital bed in a coma; Paco, shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror grows around them, the group of heroes must face a new enemy.

“If the first season was the gathering of the storm clouds, the second will be the maelstrom preceding an epic storm,” said de la Iglesia.

30 Coins stars Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner and Miguel Ángel Silvestre. Executive Producers for HBO Max are Steve Matthews, Miguel Salvat and Antony Root.

Image
Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.

The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. Álex de la Iglesia Starts Shooting Next Movie El Cuarto Pasajero
Image
No one can accuse Spanish filmmaker and all around maverick Álex de la Iglesia of being lazy. Not even during a pandemic. Somehow, he's getting shit done.    We are all enjoying his series 30 coins and the director recently wrapped up photography of the first instalment of his new brand of horror films he calls The Fear Collection. That first film is a fable about the fear of tourism called Vececiafrenia. All of this was of course written with his writer Jorge Guerricaechevarría.    The pair are at it again with production of a black humored road movie combined with a romantic comedy called El cuarto pasajero (The Fourth Passenger). It will star Ernesto Alterio and Blanca Suárez who have worked with de la...

Daniel Calparsoro’s thriller Sky High to be turned into a series - Production / Funding - Spain
Image
Netflix has acquired the rights to this box-office smash with a view to stretching it out into episodes that it will air worldwide, using the same crew as the movie. Sky High was shot in September 2019 (see the news), enjoyed its premiere during the first weekend of the Málaga Film Festival (in August last year) and was released in Spanish cinemas in December, on the eve of the Christmas festivities, after various delays brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Directed by Daniel Calparsoro and with a screenplay penned by the man who writes (virtually) all action films in Spain, Jorge Guerricaechevarría, the feature starring Miguel Herrán, Carolina Yuste, Asia Ortega and Luis Tosar has so far grossed more than €1.7 million, which makes it a big hit bearing in mind the...

Daniel Monzón and his gang become outlaws in Las leyes de la frontera - Production / Funding - Spain

The filmmaker is engrossed in post-production for his seventh feature, an adaptation of the Javier Cercas novel Outlaws, shot last autumn and starring a cast of young actors. After flirting with musical comedy in Yucatán (2018), Daniel Monzón is now trying his hand at a film about small-time delinquents in the guise of Las leyes de la frontera (lit. “The Laws of the Border”), a movie that he shot during the last few months of 2020 in various locations around Catalonia and which is now in post-production. The feature is a big-screen adaptation of the novel Outlaws by Javier Cercas. Set in 1978, the film marks the fourth joint effort between Monzón and Jorge Guerricaechevarría, and tells the action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled story of 17-year-old Nacho Cañas, an introverted student who lives in Girona and who is...

Series review: 30 Coins - Series / Reviews - Spain
Image
Álex de la Iglesia helms an orgy of dramatic effects and homages to the fantasy genre, with particularly knowing nods to traditional Spanish horror. This journalist would love to be able to conceal himself and spy on the artistic duo made up of director Álex de la Iglesia and his “resident” co-screenwriter, Jorge Guerricaechevarría, every time they cook up a new story. It’s not hard to imagine that when HBO Spain invited them to create a series – with all the freedom in the world (and oodles of economic and technical resources) – Bilbao’s most terrifyingly entertaining pair rubbed their hands with glee, drooled excitedly and started a scriptwriting war, competing with each other to see which of the two could come up with the most ingenious idea, the most warped storyline and the most far-fetched twist. The result – an eight-episode series entitled 30 Coins – can be enjoyed...
