The 15 Best Summer Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
The sun is out, the air is humid, and the beach is crowded with tourists and families. Summer is officially here, which, for many of us, means that we're going to spend the next few months not enjoying the great outdoors, but staying inside where there's air conditioning and ice cream. But what should we be watching on our summer movie marathons while everyone else is leaving the TV off to visit water parks and take cross-country trips with their loved ones?

Have no fear! These 15 films may span a wide range of genres -- from comedy to fantasy to even horror -- but they all have one thing in common: They all take place in the summer. The characters might be people looking to get away from their monotonous lives on vacation, or may simply be used to living their life in the summery weather of Los Angeles or Italy.

The Sandlot Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
For many kids growing up in the early 1990s, "The Sandlot" was one of the definitive sports movies. Set in 1960s Southern California, it revolves around a group of kids who gather to play baseball in an abandoned lot in their suburban neighborhood. But their light-hearted escapades turn chaotic when the newest member of their ranks accidentally offers up a priceless baseball autographed by Babe Ruth, not realizing its significance, which is promptly hit over the fence into a neighboring junkyard. To get it back, they'll have to tangle with the Beast, a (supposedly) bloodthirsty monster of a dog who (allegedly) eats burglars as though they were kibble.

Over the years since its release, "The Sandlot" has swung its way into the heart of pop culture, basking in the warm glow of '90s nostalgia and developing a reputation of one of the greatest baseball movies of all time. While...

Matthew McConaughey's Only Two War Movies Are Streaming on Netflix
Image
Matthew McConaughey has proven himself as a jack of all trades in Hollywood. He's starred in everything from a handful of 2000s romantic comedies to heavy-hitting dramas like The Lincoln Lawyer and Dallas Buyer's Club (for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor), not to mention his role as a stripper in Magic Mike, a disturbing villain in Killer Joe, an animated koala in the Sing franchise, or his iconic role in Dazed and Confused. McConaughey is able to fully embody any role he takes on.

However, in U-571 and Free State of Jones, the celebrated star takes on a totally different genre: War. Portraying rugged men who manage to be compassionate yet headstrong leaders while running head-first into battle seems to come naturally to him. Though one film is fashioned more as a blockbuster with giant explosions and nail-biting turns and the other a more zoomed-in analysis of...

You're Killin' Me, Smalls: The Origins Of Ham Porter's The Sandlot Quote
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In 1993, David Mickey Evans' "The Sandlot" hit theaters as the kinder, gentler "The Bad News Bears" for nostalgic Baby Boomers and baseball-loving Millennials. Combining elements of Michael Ritchie's little league classic and Richard Donner's "The Goonies," the film recalls the magical summer when 11-year-old Scott Smalls (Tom Guiry) learned to play America's pastime in order to hang out with the neighborhood kids. The adventure element centers on the boys' attempts to retrieve the Babe Ruth-autographed baseball Scott unwisely "borrowed" from his step-father for use in a game, but the film is largely an anecdotal tale of early adolescents messing around all day long sans parental supervision.

The innocent freedom of "The Sandlot" is apparently forever (/Film called it one of the 20 best sports films of all time). Millennials are now sharing the film with their children, who...

One Of The Happiest Kids Movies Of The '90s Completely Ignores A Dark Reality
Image
The nostalgic coming-of-age baseball movie The Sandlot features James Earl Jones in a small but crucial role as Mr. Mertle, whose character hints at a dark part of baseball history that the film completely glosses over. Mr. Mertle bonds with Tom Guiry's Scott Smalls and Mike Vitar's Benny The Jet Rodriguez over their shared love of the great American pastime, but the endlessly quotable movie The Sandlot does not delve into the details of Mr. Mertles exact past in the professional world of baseball.

Smalls friends live and breathe baseball, and they pass their passion on to Smalls over the course of the summer of 1962, loosely based on the writer/director's childhood. Mr. Mertle saves Smalls skin by giving him a priceless artifact from his days as a professional baseball player himself. In the process, Mr. Mertle shares a heartwarming story about his legendary contemporary, Babe Ruth. However,...

Classic Trailer Rewatch: 'The Sandlot' - One of the Best Baseball Films
Image
"A little piece of paradise, a half a block wide, and a whole season long." A classic trailer rewatch from the 90s – an iconic baseball movie about kids getting into trouble. The Sandlot was one of my favorite films growing up – I watched it over and over and over so many times. In the summer of 1962, a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a young baseball prodigy and his rowdy team, resulting in many adventures. It's not only the perfect slice of suburban Americana, with all the usual happenings, it's a great baseball movie about a group of kids who – even if they can't really play all that well – build their friendships around the game anyway. The Sandlot stars Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Art Lafleur, Patrick Renna (also seen in You Gotta Believe), Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Adams, and many others. There are many baseball movies in Hollywood history,...

You’re Killing Me Smalls! ‘Sandlot’ Actor Tom Guiry Arrested for Tossing 35-Pound Dumbbell at a Car
Image
That’s not how you become the King of Crash!

Thirty-one years after he starred in the beloved baseball movie The Sandlot, Tom Guiry, who played the main character Scotty Smalls, now faces charges of assault and battery third-degree and malicious injury to personal property after allegedly smashing the windshield of a Jeep with a 35-pound dumbbell. On June 2nd, police officers in Horry County, South Carolina responded to a disturbance call and found Guiry sitting in the middle of a roadway near the trashed Jeep with the victim shouting at Guiry, “My window’s been shattered.”

In Guiry’s defense, usually when he steps over the line like that, the only punishment he receives is getting chased by a monster dog or hearing a classic baseball story from James Earl Jones.

Now, on a less flippant note, the circumstances surrounding Guiry’s arrest are strange enough to warrant some concern.

10 Forgotten TV Shows That Deserve Another Chance
Image
Forgotten TV shows deserve a second chance as they offer well-developed characters and compelling narratives that may have been underappreciated in the past. Rebooting or reviving these shows can provide insights into diverse television content and offer fresher perspectives and plots compared to popular series in the streaming age. The cancellation of some hit shows, like The Black Donnellys and FlashForward, was unjustified as they had potential for continuing the storylines or exploring unanswered questions, and they deserve another chance to captivate audiences.

Audiences in search of quality content should look to forgotten TV shows that deserve another chance. Indeed, shows that have been buried under the deluge of new content aren't necessarily forgettable. A variety of factors play a significant role in the fate of TV series, and many great shows that have been memory-holed deserve a second look from audiences and studios alike.

25 Best Quotes From The Sandlot
Image
The Sandlot is a beloved movie from the 90s that has unforgettable quotes and memorable characters. The film captures a different time and place, where kids played baseball in the local lot without cell phones or social media. The movie emphasizes friendship, fun, and the love of baseball, showing that it's not always about competition or winning.

Kids of the 1990s know that The Sandlot is endlessly quotable, and the best Sandlot quotes are recognizable even when someone hasn’t seen the movie in a while. The first movie was so successful and beloved that it spawned a sequel nearly a decade after the original, and even got a time-traveling third adventure for those who love their neighborhood baseball games. There’s even been talk of a series inspired by the original movie, though it hasn’t moved beyond the development stage.

The Sandlot (1993)
Wtf Happened to The Sandlot Cast?
The Sandlot (1993)
If you grew up in the nineties, you undoubtedly grew up a massive fan of The Sandlot. A coming-of-age story centering around a group of baseball-loving kids who hang out every day in a Sandlot, the movie didn’t make much of a peep in theatres back in 1993. However, the box office didn’t tell the whole story, with the movie becoming a cult film on VHS, cable and later DVD, with writer-director David Mickey Evans eventually returning to make a Dtv spin-off, The Sandlot 2, while a prequel is still in development.

But what happened to all of the kids in The Sandlot? Unlike a movie like Stand by Me, there were no megastars like River Phoenix to emerge, but the cast still fared well in the years to come. Many have gone on to everyday lives, while others continue to work (successfully) in showbiz almost 30 years later. In this...

‘The Unforgivable’ Review: Too Many Twists Make It Tough to Pardon Sandra Bullock’s Ex-Con Drama
Image
Sandra Bullock plays a newly released Washington State ex-con trying to pick up where she left off 20 years earlier in “The Unforgivable” — no easy task, particularly since her character remains branded a cop-killer pariah. Working in English, German director Nora Fingscheidt’s second narrative feature (following Berlin prize-winner “System Crasher”) is adapted from a 2009 miniseries by esteemed U.K. TV scribe Sally Wainwright. The story translates well enough in cultural terms, though its density of plot elements ends up feeling more contrived in this compressed feature format.

Nevertheless, the producer-star’s first vehicle since “Bird Box” in 2018 is a sturdy drama-cum-thriller that should prove another Netflix hit, albeit one unlikely to reproduce that film’s flukish cultural-cachet buzz. It opens in limited U.S. theaters the day before Thanksgiving, then launches worldwide on the streamer Dec. 10.

Affecting the reined-in, wary, pallid look of other major actresses who’ve played ex-con roles,...

‘The Sandlot’ Series in the Works at Disney+
The Sandlot (1993)
Disney+ is developing a TV series based on “The Sandlot,” Variety has learned.

David Mickey Evans, the co-writer and director of the 1993 film, is attached to write and executive produce the series. It is said to take in 1984 and would focus on the children of the original characters.

The first “Sandlot” film took place in the summer of 1962 and followed a group of friends who spent their days playing baseball while also dealing with a menacing dog that lived next to the titular sandlot that they referred to as The Beast. The film starred Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Karen Allen, Denis Leary, James Earl Jones, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, and Victor Dimattia. It grossed just over $33 million at the box office and has gone on to become a cult classic. Two direct-to-video sequels were produced in 2005 and 2007.

Batter Up! The Sandlot Is Returning as a TV Series With the Original Cast Members
Are you ready to go back to The Sandlot? After 25 years, the original cast is returning at the direction of David Mickey Evans for a TV series. Evans wrote and directed the first two Sandlot movies, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, he's ready to bring the boys together for at least two seasons on an unnamed streaming service.

"I already got all the original cast members back," Evans said on The Rain Delay podcast, although he did not name the exact actors participating. "It takes place in 1984, when they're all like 33 years old and they all have children of their own, and that's all I can tell you."

This will be a jump forward from the original film, which was set in San Fernando Valley in 1962. If it's true that all the original cast members are returning, we can look forward to appearances from Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry), Hamilton...

Legends Truly Never Die - Fox Is Developing a Prequel to '90s Classic The Sandlot
Batter up folks, we're heading back to the sandlot! 20th Century Fox is currently at work on a prequel to the classic 1993 film The Sandlot. The original writer and director, David Mickey Evans, is coming back to cowrite the script with newcomer Austin Reynolds. Deadline first broke the news and reported that though the plot details are still unknown, the story is said to involve the legend of "The Beast," the giant English mastiff that terrifies all the kids in the neighborhood.

The cult classic recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special cast reunion and a two-day return to theaters. The heartwarming comedy is set in 1962 and tells the story of Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) who moves to a new neighborhood and is taken under the wing of local baseball superstar Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar). Scotty joins Benny's group of friends who form an entire baseball team including Hamilton...

Possible Prequel to The Sandlot Heading Our Way
Since the people at Fox are bored waiting on the deal with Disney to finish, they have decided to look at giving us a Prequel to one of the most beloved basball films of all time.

It never fails. Just when you think Hollywood has already spit out the dumbbest possible ideas, they go ahead and come up with something even worse. This time, since they have nothing better to do, Fox has decided what the world needs is a prequel to The Sandlot. How is that even possible?!

The Sandlot is a classic film about 9 kids that came together one summer to defeat the beast, to save a baseball signed by The Sultan of Swat himself. The movie itself is a prequel, to children's summers all over America! What is there we need to know about these kids before that fateful summer. Until this point in their lives all there was,...

Sandlot Prequel Is Coming from Original Creator
Legends never die: 20th Century Fox is currently in development on a Sandlot Prequel, which, for a generation of kids who grew up in the 90s, may just be the greatest baseball movie ever made. David M. Evans, who wrote and directed the original movie, is on board to help develop the project and pen the screenplay for Fox. Evans will be working alongside writer Austin Reynolds on the script.

Unfortunately, there are no story details available right now but this will take place prior to the events of the original movie, which took place in 1962 and centered on a young group of kids who lived to play baseball. A young kid moves to town named Scott Smalls and befriends The Sandlot gang, who teach him about the sport they love so dearly. Things get tricky when they lose Smalls' stepfather's ball that is signed by Babe Ruth to The Beast,...

Hah! This Guy Wearing a Sandlot Shirt Had No Clue He Was Talking to Sandlot Stars
The Sandlot (1993)
This is truly killing me, Smalls. When The Sandlot actors Patrick Renna and Tom Guiry had an encounter with a supposed fan on the streets, things took a questionable yet hilarious turn and an iconic photo was born. Here's what went down: Patrick and Tom (aka Hamilton "Ham" Porter and Scotty Smalls from The Sandlot) were walking down the street in the East Village neighborhood of New York City when they spotted a young man wearing a t-shirt that honored their breakout coming-of-age flick. The shirt featured Ham sporting his signature orange-and-white striped shirt and holding a baseball bat while pointing to the outfield, and included his most quoted line, "You're killing me, Smalls!"

When Patrick complimented the guy's shirt, likely assuming he was aware of its origin and the fact that it was his face plastered across his chest, the light bulb simply didn't go off in the man's head.

Donald Faison Poses With Teen Girl Wearing Clueless Shirt — And She Has No Idea Who He Is
Donald Faison at an event for Megamind (2010)
Donald Faison encountered a very Clueless fan on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old actor who starred in the beloved ’90s film, shared a selfie on Instagram posing with a teenager wearing a T-shirt with the entire cast on it.

However, the teen clearly chose the shirt for the sake of fashion and not to pay homage to the movie as she had no idea who Faison was.

“#Clueless for real for real…she was like who are you and why do you want this picture? #MovieOlderThanYou,” Faison captioned the hilarious shot.

But, Faison can take solace in the fact he is not...

The Sandlot (1993)
Exclusive: 20th Century Fox is in early development on a prequel to the 1993 cult classic The Sandlot, with David Mickey Evans, the original’s writer and director, attached to co-write the script with Austin Reynolds. Details on the film’s plot are under wraps, but I hear it involves the legend of the beast from the first iteration.

The news comes as the film recently hit the 25-year mark since its release. Set in 1962, the coming-of-age comedy centered on Scottie Smalls (Tom Guiry) who, after moving to a new neighborhood, befriends a group of boys who play baseball at the sandlot and get into a series of touching adventures.

It also starred Mike Vitar (Benjamin “Benny” Franklin Rodriguez), Patrick Renna (Hamilton “Ham” Porter), Chauncey Leopardi (Michael “Squints” Palledorous), Victor Dimattia (Timmy Timmons), Marty York (Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan), Shane Obedzinski (Tommy “Repeat” Timmons), Grant Gelt (Bertram Grover Weeks), Brandon Quintin Adams...
