John Gulager

Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, And Wes Craven Once Collaborated On A Forgotten Horror Movie
Image
John Gulager's 2005 goopy horror/comedy flick "Feast" was the resulting film wrought by season three of "Project Greenlight." For those unfamiliar with "Project Greenlight," it was a documentary series on HBO (previously on Bravo in 2005) overseen by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Each season, the two stars would host a screenwriting competition, seeking the best scripts they could find from amateur or unproven authors. The winner would then see their script made into a feature film. Sometimes the writer would direct their own film, sometimes a first-time filmmaker would be paired with the screenplay. "Project Greenlight" then followed the filmmaking process, from casting through final editing, detailing the way a low-budget film is made. The finished movies each got limited theatrical runs.

The idea behind "Project Greenlight" was to offer aspiring filmmakers their "big break," adding new voices to the filmmaking community. It's a neat idea, although the films...

This Most-Watched Free-to-Stream Horror Movie Stars an Iconic Legend of Genre Cinema
Image
The most-watched horror film on Amazon Freevee today is a farcical effort starring the iconic Danny Trejo. I’m talking about John Gulager’s latest film, Seven Cemeteries (stylized on the one sheet as Se7en Cemeteries). The film has been charting in the top 10 on Freevee for the past several days, and today, Seven Cemeteries sits as the third most-watched film on the service overall.

To call this horror picture campy might be an understatement. After all, the flick follows a recently paroled Danny Trejo and his army of undead sidekicks as they face off against a drug impresario. If you need an escape from reality, this may be just the ticket.

In the film, “A recent parolee gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman’s ranch from a ruthless drug lord.“

I haven’t had the chance...

Interview: Danny Trejo, Efren Ramirez and more get into their Seven Samurai-inspired, Seven Cemeteries
Image
Does anyone else remember Project Greenlight? The Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-produced show about giving amateur filmmakers a chance to make a feature-length film with “studio” resources? In its third (and final) season, they would focus on the horror genre, delivering the high energy and quite bonkers, Feast. While it’s sequels are considerably more Grindhouse, there’s still a lot of charm with that first film and a lot of that has to do with director, John Gulager. On the show, Gulager always came across as a bit eccentric. Son of actor Clu Gulager, it’s always been evident that John has a great knowledge of the world of cinema. So it’s not surprising to see him remix the story of the Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven into one with zombies and the supernatural. And the humor allows Seven Cemeteries to switch things up just enough.

Talking...

I Love That Shes Supposed to Look Hideous - Maria Canals-Barrera on Seven Cemeteries
Image
Seven Cemeteries is a classic Western, a tale of vengeance, redemption and zombies. When Santana Bravo (Danny Trejo) is finally released from prison on parole, he's called upon by a young widow, Dolores (Emma Ramos) to protect her ranch from Abuelo (Sal Lopez), the remorseless and violent drug lord responsible for her husband's death and Bravo's imprisonment decades prior. The problem is, Bravo's loyal squad of friends, criminals and ne'er-do-wells died years ago. However, the local bruja or, witch portrayed by Maria Canals-Barrera, has the perfect solution. He should just bring them back from the dead. Granting him a magical ritual knife and her living-impaired husband, Miguel (Efren Ramirez), la Bruja sends Bravo back on his quest for redemption, with a little help from friends from the other side.

In this exclusive interview with Cbr, actress Maria Canals-Barrera discusses her grimy and unconventional role as a witch, her gnarly makeup,...

‘Seven Cemeteries’ Movie Ending Explained And Recap: Did Bravo And Carmela Take Their Revenge?
Image
Director John Gulager’s latest horror comedy oddity, Seven Cemeteries, starring Danny Trejo, is a super fun mismatch of zombie-western narratives that surely stands head and shoulders above the recent deluge of pre-Halloween horror VOD releases. The premise is pretty basic; think of Seven Samurai but with a crew of wisecracking undead going against a dreaded drug lord, and that’s all you need to know before diving into the goofy, bloody spectacle of Seven Cemeteries. Aside from some good comedic moments scattered throughout the plot, the fact that despite having little screentime, the ensemble of characters have their distinct personalities is what I find really commendable. Embracing the tropes and clichés of both the western and zombie horror genres, the movie is self-conscious enough to never take itself too seriously, and despite that, it features some well-earned emotional moments that leave a mark at the end. It’s good...

‘The Penguin’ Episode 5 Recap: Did Sofia Join Hands With Salvatore?
Image
Amidst betrayals, murders, shifting alliances, and broken family ties, Gotham’s underworld goes through a major change in the fifth episode of Max’s The Penguin, titled Homecoming, as the rivalry between Sofia and Oz leaves a trail of havoc and destruction. While the fourth episode chronicled Sofia’s sordid past, dysfunctional family relationships, and her reaction to heal her trauma by gassing her entire family to death, the fifth episode brings the focus back on Oz, who is clearly punching above his weight at this point by making some daring calls and taking decisions fueled by his ego and bloated ambitions. As the series approaches its last lap, the pacing is noticeably fast, character interactions become much more personal in nature, and the chaotic, unhinged energy that characterizes Gotham City as a whole creeps inside the narrative.

Danny Trejo has become one of the most iconic figures in movie history. From Machete to Predators, he's been everything from dashing hero to terrifying villain, slashing and mowing his way through film after film. In his latest work, the horror-comedy Western Seven Cemeteries, directed by fellow actor John Gulager, Trejo is Bravo Santana: a parolee who's just gotten out of serving decades in prison thanks to a false charge from the ruthless drug lord, Abuelo (Sal Lopez). No sooner does he get even a moment of freedom that he's tasked by Dolores, a young widow, to help her protect her family's ranch from Abuelo. The problem is, Bravo lost his loyal posse of rogues and fighters long ago. Luckily, a Bruja (Maria Canals-Barrera) has the perfect solution he can raise his old friends back from the dead for one last battle.

Efren Ramirez on Being Dead and Loving It in Seven Cemeteries
Image
Efren Ramirez has become beloved in the pop culture sphere as one of Hollywood's most loved character actors. After winning over the hearts of viewers in 2004 in Napoleon Dynamite and convincing everyone to "Vote For Pedro," he has gone on to play iconic supporting roles all across different movies. This time, in John Gulager's horror-comedy-Western Seven Cemeteries, Ramirez portrays Miguel, the faithful friend and lover who joins Danny Trejo's Santana Bravo in his mission to save a woman's ranch from a deadly drug lord, with the help of his posse. There's just one hitch Miguel and the entire posse are undead. And it turns out, being a zombie comes with a few convenient perks.

In this exclusive interview with Cbr, Efren Ramirez discusses working with Danny Trejo, his love of Halloween and all things creepy and kooky, the romantic and redemptive heart of Seven Cemeteries, and the joys of playing a dead guy.

Seven Cemeteries Interview: Danny Trejo On His Wild New Role And A Legendary Action Career (Exclusive)
Image
In Seven Cemeteries, a recent parolee (Danny Trejo) gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman's ranch from a ruthless drug lord.

The movie also stars Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, Richard Esteras, and Maria Canals-Barrera, and is every bit as delightfully bonkers as it sounds.

You don't need us to tell you that Trejo is an icon and his many credits include the likes of Con Air, Machete, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Breaking Bad, and Dusk till Dawn. Earlier this week, we had the good fortune to sit down with Danny to discuss his role as Bravo in this action-packed supernatural romp from filmmaker John Gulager.

During our interview, Trejo reflects on his extraordinary career, revealing what brings him back to this genre again and again. And, for this project, he talks...

Almost twenty years ago, viewers of the Project Greenlight reality TV series got to watch as John Gulager was hired to direct the creature feature Feast for a producing team that included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Wes Craven. Since then, he has gone on to direct Piranha 3Dd, Zombie Night, and Children of the Corn: Runaway. His latest movie is the action thriller Seven Cemeteries, which was just given a theatrical and digital release today, October 11th, and on Amazon it’s available to rent for the price of $6.99 or purchase for $14.99. Image
The following contains spoilers for Seven Cemeteries, hitting theaters on October 11th for limited release.

Directed by actor and filmmaker John Gulager, Seven Cemeteries is an upcoming movie that blends black comedy, irreverent horror, revenge drama and the classic Western. It casts parolees and zombies as the unlikely heroes of the Oklahoma farmlands. Santana Bravo (Danny Trejo), the leader of a gang, has just gotten parole, having spent the last few decades serving time for a crime he didn't commit. He's just gotten a taste of freedom when a recently widowed young woman, Dolores (Emma Ramos), comes to him for help to save her ranch from Santana's nemesis: the ruthless and violent drug lord, Abuelo (Sal Lopez). Directed by John Gulager, produced by Joel Soisson and Talia Bella, and starring Danny Trejo as an ex-con some ranchers hire to protect them from a drug lord, Seven Cemeteries is a return to horror. Bob made his mark in the genre as the founder of Dimension Films in 1992, once Miramax’s profitable horror label and the original home of the Scream and Scary Movie franchises. "Save this lady's farm – job's done." As with everything else horror, this is set for release in October in time for the horror season. A recent parolee named Bravo gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman's ranch from a ruthless drug lord. The film is loosely inspired by The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, as he tries to round up his old gang to get revenge... But of course it's hard to wrangle the (un)dead. Danny Trejo stars as Bravo, with Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, and Richard Esteras. Not much to see here. Stay Home, Watch Horror: Five Splatter Comedies to Stream This Week
Image
Whereas splatter movies wield gore and carnage like a weapon to evoke a visceral response, splatter comedies push the onscreen violence and gore into outlandish territory for the sake of a hearty laugh. Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi, for example, began their filmmaking careers defining the modern splatter comedy with their early works, pushing the boundaries of taste, horror, and humor through cartoonish bloodletting.

This week brings the arrival of a new splatter-comedy, Destroy All Neighbors, presenting the perfect excuse to laugh your way through the excess entrails and arterial spray the niche subgenre has to offer. These five splatter comedies vary in style and tone, but all seek to tickle your funny bone through humor, fun, and a whole lot of guts.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The Collector (2009) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Collector was Written by Ric Soloman, Narrated by Travis Hopson, and Edited by Ric Solomon, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Back in the 2000s, one horror franchise would reign supreme over all others… Saw. From 2004 to 2010, seven films were released and each was more gruesome than the next. People usually break the franchise down into different groups as to which is their favorite. There’s the original trilogy, which most would say is where the best films stem from. It’s also where Leigh Whannell, James Wan and Darren Lynn Bousman had the most control over the franchise. There’s the middle trilogy, which most tend to hate and believe the series jumped the shark. Then there’s 7-9 where it consists of a 3D film, a film entitled Jigsaw and...

‘Project Greenlight’ Review: Issa Rae Leads a Max Season That Starts Slow but Eventually Hits Its Stride
Image
I love HBO’s Project Greenlight because it’s one of the few reality shows designed to document inevitable failure.

Sure, that’s not the spoken aspiration of the series, which launched on the names and star presence of producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Project Greenlight was created to give an opportunity for an unproven filmmaker to direct a low-budget feature with guaranteed distribution, and for viewers to learn about the filmmaking process through their behind-the-scenes misadventures. Those things, as audiences immediately learned, have absolutely nothing to do with making a good movie. Like the bear playing the violin, it’s entertaining enough that he’s doing it at all, and complaining about his bow posture is almost petty.

As Issa Rae, executive producer on Max’s new Project Greenlight reboot, diplomatically puts it, “The films of Project Greenlight past have… been Ok? You know? So we want to...

Clu Gulager, Horror Character Actor and ‘Return of the Living Dead’ Star, Dead at 93
Image
Clu Gulager, the character actor who famously played Burt in “The Return of the Living Dead” and Mr. Walsh in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge” among hundreds of other credits, has died at the age of 93.

Gulager was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma in 1928. His legal name was William Martin Gulager, but he received the Cherokee nickname “Clu” at a young age because his middle name is Martin and purple martins are often referred to as “clu-clu birds.” Gulager made his screen acting debut in a 1955 episode of “Omnibus,” and soon found success as a television Western star.

He famously played Billy the Kid on the NBC series “The Tall Man” for its entire two season run, and later joined “The Virginian” in Season 3 as Deputy Sheriff Emmett Ryker, eventually appearing in 104 episodes. He also guest starred on many other Western series including hits like “Wagon Train” and “Bonanza.

The Murderous Child Cult is Back in Trailer For Children Of The Corn: Runaway
There's another Children of the Corn movie coming out! Children of the Corn: Runaway is the tenth installment of the long-running horror franchise. It all started with the adaptation of Stephen King's novel that was released way back in 1984.

Apparently, there's a decent sized audience that enjoys watching an evil cult full of kids killing adults. This one features an adorable little blonde girl smashing something with a hammer. I remember watching that first film for the first time. I was a kid and snuck out to watch it with some friends. It kinda jacked me up, but I also enjoyed the thrill of watching it. Unfortunately, none of the sequels were as good or as interesting as the first movie. I've watched them though, and I'll end up eventually watching this one as well.

"Children of the Corn: Runaway tells the story of young, pregnant Ruth, who escapes...

With the film set for release on March 13th, Lionsgate have released a trailer for the home entertainment release of forthcoming horror sequel Children of the Corn: Runaway – the eighth(!) sequel to the 1984 original film and, if you count the remake, the Tenth Children of the Corn film in the long-running franchise.

She spends the next decade living anonymously in an attempt to spare her son the horrors that she experienced as a child. Ruth and her son end up in a small Oklahoma town, but something is following her. Now, she must confront this evil or lose her child.

Children of the Corn: Runaway comes from director John Gulager (Feast, Piranha 3Dd) and stars Marci Miller, Lynn Andrews, Mary Kathryn Bryant, and Jake Ryan Scott.

Children of the Corn: Runaway Trailer Arrives and It's Creepy
John Gulager
It's been nearly 2 years since Children of the Corn: Runaway was announced and now we finally have a release date and a trailer. The movie was reportedly worked on in secret, filming in Oklahoma City under the direction of Feast director John Gulager in effort for Dimension to rush the movie out in order to keep the rights to the franchise. It was also learned that production ended on April 2nd of 2016, but it's been pretty much silent ever since then, until now.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Children of the Corn: Runaway will officially be released to Blu-ray and DVD as well as VOD on March 13th, which is awesome news. Bloody Disgusting reported back in November that the movie was either going to be released in February or March by star Marci Miller. At the time, that was the most news that had been heard about the tenth...

Horrifying Pics For Hellraiser: Judgment Will Haunt Your Dreams
The steady, blood-red stream of Hellraiser: Judgment content continues today with Bloody Disgusting unveiling some creepy new stills from the forthcoming horror flick.

On paper, it’s the straight-to-video revival from Gary J. Tunnicliffe, who has been developing Judgment since as far back as 2015. Inspired by the works of Clive Barker, Tunnicliffe’s über-violent gorefest aims to resurrect the Cenobite Pinhead (Paul T. Taylor) in style, and maybe – just maybe – spawn a sequel of its own.

Before we get swept up by forward-thinking and speculation, though, Bloody Disgusting’s gallery is a puzzle box of sadomasochistic experiments, which, if nothing else, acts as living proof that Hellraiser: Judgment is four weeks away from making Event Horizon seem like a bright and breezy Disney movie.

Hellraiser: Judgment trailer turns Pinhead into a serial killer
Tony Sokol Jan 10, 2018

Here's the trailer for the latest Hellraiser movie, Hellraiser: Judgment...

“I am a jealous god,” we see written in blood in the first Hellraiser: Judgment trailer, though the writer might be envious of the simple charm of the original classic horror film. Hellraiser (1987) was Clive Barker's directorial debut. It was based on his novella The Hellbound Heart. and introduced moviegoers to the Cenobites. The tenth film in the Hellraiser franchise turns Pinhead into serial killer. But it probably won’t be enough to kill the series. Hellraiser: Judgment will be meted out on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on February 13 in the Us from Lionsgate. We don't have a UK release for it yet.

Hellraiser: Judgment follows homicide cops on a devilish beat. “Three detectives trying to stop a diabolical serial killer are sucked into a maze of otherworldly horror, where hellish denizens including the Auditor, the Assessor,...

Things Get Hairy In Bloody New Screenshots For Hellraiser: Judgment
Hell is coming to home video on February 13th, and to champion the long-awaited arrival of Hellraiser: Judgment, Bloody Disgusting has premiered a gallery of truly gruesome images from the Gary J. Tunnicliffe feature.

Nipping at the undead heels of this morning’s trailer, the images below are not for the faint of heart. Indeed, anyone with prior knowledge of the cult Hellraiser series will know that ol’ Pinhead tends to leave a bloodbath in his wake, and that’s exactly what Judgment, the tenth instalment in this most bizarre of franchises, hopes to achieve.

And so, if you’re still pining for more horror-themed content following Lionsgate’s trailer debut, we’ve got you covered, as the gallery below is teeming with nightmarish treats. Highlights include blood, satanic rituals, more blood, close-ups of Pinhead, yet more blood and some…thing that closely resembles Nemesis from Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise.

Hellraiser: Judgment Trailer Brings Pinhead Back from Hell
Evil seeks evil in the first trailer for Hellraiser: Judgment. The Hellraiser franchise is one of the most enduring in horror history, despite the fact that the movies have never really done big business at the box office. Still, horror fans love to see Pinhead and his fellow Cenobites bring the pain and blood every few years. Now, the first trailer for Hellraiser: Judgment, the tenth movie in the longstanding series, has arrived and it's absolutely dripping with blood and horrific imagery.

Hellraiser: Judgment is a movie we've been hearing about for years, but the project has yet to find a release, despite reportedly being finished for quite some time. Rumor has it The Weinstein Company only made the movie in the first place to keep the rights to the franchise. Not exactly the most artistic of reasons to make a movie, but nevertheless, here we are. So, how does it look?...

Official Trailer for 10th 'Hellraiser' Horror Film 'Hellraiser: Judgment'
"Evil seeks evil." Lionsgate has launched an official trailer for the latest Hellraiser film titled Hellraiser: Judgment, which is actually the 10th film in the Hellraiser series (believe it or not?). I didn't even realize there with this many. The original horror cult classic Hellraiser was released in 1987, from writer/director Clive Barker. Hellraiser: Judgment is directed by Gary J. Tunnicliffe, who has been working for two decades as a horror make-up effects artist before jumping into the director's seat this time. It tells the story of three detectives as they struggle to solve a horrifying murder, but instead find themselves thrust into the depths of Pinhead’s hellacious landscape. Starring Paul T. Taylor as Pinhead, along with Damon Carney, Randy Wayne, Alexandra Harris, John Gulager, Mike Jay Regan, plus Heather Langenkamp. See below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Gary J. Tunnicliffe's Hellraiser: Judgment, from YouTube: Detectives...

Here’s When You Can Expect To See Children Of The Corn: Runaway
There are currently two sequels to iconic horror franchises being held by Dimension Films. They are, of course, none other than Hellraiser: Judgment and Children of the Corn: Runaway.

While both projects were already in an uncertain state of development, their productions no doubt took a troublesome turn with the whole Harvey Weinstein debacle. But now we’ve received a new update on the latter thanks to actress Marci Miller. According to her, we should expect to see the pic, in which Miller plays main character Ruth, in February/March 2018 – though she wouldn’t get anymore specific than that.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the film, here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Runaway tells the story of a young woman named Ruth, who finds herself pregnant after escaping a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. Ruth struggles to spare her son the horrors of her childhood while trying to outrun her past.

Whatever Happened to John Gulager’s Children of the Corn: Runaway?
Sometimes a movie goes into production and then seemingly disappears from the world altogether. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. Usually, Dimension is involved. Ouch. But true. Such as Amityville: The Awakening which was filmed in 2014 but didn’t get released until recently this year (3 years). And All the Boys Love Mandy […]

Interview: Co-Writer/Director Marcus Dunstan Discusses the Evil Next Door in The Neighbor
For over a decade now, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have collaborated on bringing crimson-stained nightmares to the big screen, and while horror fans may associate the creative duo with gore galore due to their inventive Saw sequels (parts IV–VI) and creepy Collector films, their latest project, The Neighbor, opts for atmospheric tension over buckets of blood.

With The Neighbor coming out on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and VOD from Anchor Bay Entertainment on September 6th, I had the opportunity to talk with Dunstan about directing his third film, casting Bill Engvall as a charming villain, re-teaming with actor Josh Stewart, and the possibility of a third Collector movie.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today and congratulations on The Neighbor. I'm a big fan of what you and Patrick have done in the horror genre, and this film, being more of a southern thriller, is...

Doug Bradley in Hellraiser (1987)
First Look at New Pinhead in Hellraiser: Judgment
Doug Bradley in Hellraiser (1987)
Next year will mark the 30th Anniversary of the original Hellraiser, director Clive Barker's scary classic that is still beloved by horror fans to this date. Nine sequels were spawned off of this original classic, but the franchise hasn't seen its best days, with the last installment, Hellraiser: Revelations, going straight to DVD in 2011, believed to be shot only so The Weinstein Company could keep the rights to the name. Next year, the series will scream back to life once again with Hellraiser: Judgment. Today we have a new photo from this thriller, featuring Pinhead (Paul T. Taylor) and the new villain known as The Auditor.

Bloody-Disgusting has this first look at The Auditor, although we don't know who is playing this character quite yet. The Auditor was described in a casting call as "the accountant from hell," who comes to Earth to study a persons sins, "before passing...
