‘Ashes’ Netflix Film Review: Takes A Decent Lift-Off Only To Crash Land And Leave No Survivors
Image
Netflix’s new Turkish film Ashes is one of those enticing films that know we have a child inside of us that’s always willing to come on a journey where some kind of magic is involved. The film, directed by Erdem Tepegöz, stars Funda Eryigit, Alperen Duymaz, and Mehmet Günsür in major roles. Apart from how gorgeous everybody looks in this film, there is nothing else to connect to concepts like beauty and allure in this erotic thriller, or more bluntly, a sluggish drama in the garb of an erotic thriller.

The movie begins by showing us the life of Gokce, an elegant woman who is married to the owner of a renowned publishing company. They receive a manuscript from an unknown writer, and Gokce takes a liking to it. It’s tilted ‘Ashes,’ which is where the title of the movie comes from. As an audience, we now...

'Ashes' Review — Netflix’s Turkish Romance Is a Wannabe Erotic Thriller
Image
Ashes is the latest in Netflix’s robust slate of Turkish films hitting the streamer in recent months, and one of the more confounding tales it has debuted. It centers on Gökçe (Funda Eryigit), a wealthy woman who gets swept up in the fantasy of a mysterious manuscript that her husband (Mehmet Günsür) gives her to read. The lines between fiction and reality begin to blur when her obsession with the unpublished book leads her to Metin (Alperen Duymaz), a local carpenter who is remarkably similar to the manuscript’s mysterious “M.”...

Official Trailer for Intense Turkish Erotic Thriller 'Ashes' from Netflix
Image
"You chased after a man you don't know?" Netflix has revealed the trailer for a Turkish film titled Ashes, also known as Kül in Turkish, or Ash when it was announced in 2022. Another local Turkish film from Netflix geared mainly for Turkish viewers. This intense erotic thriller depicts the story of a wealthy, married woman falling in love (in an affair) with a mysterious carpenter, which will lead to many conflicts. Starring Mehmet Günsür, Funda Eryiğit, Alperen Durmaz, and Gökçe Eyüboglu. The title of the film is also the name of the novel at the center of the plot. From an intoxicating fantasy to a dangerous affair, a wealthy married woman finds her life irreversibly shattered after picking up an unpublished novel. This looks like it gets intense - both with her fantasy romance with this carpenter guy, and with her husband who gets upset at her. Really feels like...

The latest is that Ace producer Dil Raj is bankrolling the debut film of Ashok which will be helmed by Krishna Reddy G, a former associate of Baahubali filmmaker SS Rajamouli. According to sources, Dil Raju has bought the remake rights of Turkish film Love Likes Coincidences starring Mehmet Günsür and Belçim Bilgin Erdoğan, directed by Ömer Faruk Sorak and produced by Oğuz Peri. But the story will be aligned suiting to Telugu audiences. With the pre-production work underway currently, the movie is slated to go on the floors very soon. Ashok has been undergoing rigorous training in acting, dance, and stunts at Mumbai and New York film institutes for the past one year or so and is now ready for his debut. Son of Mahesh Babu’s elder sister Padmavati and ace politician Galla Jayadev (Telugu Desam Party MP), and grandson of veteran actor Krishna, Galla Ashok has been keen on starring in films for a long time now, say sources. Jayadev, the brother-in-law of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, has been trying to bring his son even when he was a kid. 10 of the best films set in Istanbul
From Turkish versions of Tarzan and Dracula to wintry weepies, via (whisper it) Midnight Express, Fiachra Gibbons picks out the best films shot in Istanbul

• As featured in our Istanbul city guide

From Russia with Love, Terence Young, 1963

"They dance for him, they yearn for him, they die for him …" From Russia with Love is not only arguably the best of the Bond films, it set the template for all that followed, right down to the corny one-liners. This is Tatiana, the Russian double-agent love interest succumbing to Sean Connery's charms: "The mechanism is… Oh James… Will you make love to me all the time in England?" "Day and night, darling… Go on about the mechanism…" The film was shot when the city's population was less than two million (it has mushroomed to more than 13 million today), and it's a magic carpet ride back to a time when Istanbul teemed with hamals,...

New this Week: ‘The Green Lantern,’ ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ and ‘Point Break (Bd)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

The Green Lantern – Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard

Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury

Movie of the Week

The Green Lantern

The Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard

The Plot: A test pilot (Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

The Buzz: Just slightly to the right of the “kill me now” column (see Mr. Popper’s Penguins) lies DC’s feeble attempt to answer Marvel’s mighty Thor. I am stupefied at how nerdy Reynolds looks throughout all of The Green Lantern’s marketing efforts. I can’t get over it really, and I’ve never really enjoyed Reynolds at all. Blake Lively is lovely and Peter Sarsgaard is a solid heavyweight, but I just don’t...
