Woody Guthrie’s ‘Deportee,’ an Ode to Deported Workers, Has Never Been More Relevant
Image
For anyone who follows the news, the story will sound eerily familiar: migrant workers rounded up by immigration officials, put on a plane and transported to a deportation center and, ultimately, Mexico. The shocking twists, however, are the year it happened — 1948, in Fresno County, California — and the tragedy that ensued: The aircraft crashed, killing everyone onboard, including the 28 workers.

A month later, Woody Guthrie immortalized the horrific incident with a basic sketch for a song that, in the late Fifties, became “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)” after Colorado folksinger...

Unreleased Woody Guthrie Brooklyn Recordings to Be Compiled In New Collection
Image
A new collection of previously unheard Woody Guthrie home recordings will soon see the light of day. Woody at Home – Volume 1 & 2 arrives August 14th on Shamus Records and includes 22 previously unreleased tracks, among them a rendition of “This Land Is Your Land” featuring new verses.

The contents of Woody At Home were recorded from 1951 to 1952 in his Gravesend, Brooklyn home. Of the 22 tracks, 13 of them were only ever recorded at this New York residence. Guthrie employed one microphone and a reel-to-reel tape machine to capture the collected songs.

Steve Rosenthal transferred and produced the album while Jessica Thompson handled mixing and mastering duties. The duo utilized “pioneering software and antique tape machines to de-mix and mix the voice and guitar,” on Woody At Home to achieve a homespun but clearer sound.

“For Woody, to be at home producing his music at his leisure allowed a different focus and sense of safety,...

How Many Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen Lyrics Can You Identify in This New York Writer’s New Song?
Image
Steven Keene, a New York singer-songwriter, challenges fans of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen to identify as many of the creative giants’ lyrics as they can in his rollicking new song “Thesaurus.”

Just shy of four minutes, there’s nonetheless a lot to digest in Keene’s word-packed song, which he sells with his own Dylan-like delivery. Some references are easily identifiable to casual fans — he calls out “First We Take Manhattan” and “Highway 61” in the first 30 seconds — but others, like “He not busy being born is busy dying,...

Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy Join Emmy Rossum in Liz Meriwether Hulu Series Inspired by 1987 Movie ‘Black Widow’
Image
Liz Meriwether has cast two key roles in her upcoming Hulu series.

Variety has learned that both Lola Petticrew and Scott McNairy are now set to star in the untitled series, which is loosely inspired by the 1987 movie “Black Widow.” Emmy Rossum is also attached to star in the drama, which was originally announced in March. In addition, Brian Kirk has boarded the series as director and executive producer.

The official logline states, “An FBI agent uses the secrets from a female serial killer’s past to try and find her.” Rossum will star as the FBI agent. Petticrew will play Catherine, who is described as “a killer with a complicated past targeting wealthy men and running from the NYPD and FBI.”

McNairy will play Danny, said to be “An NYPD Homicide Detective who’s been at it too long. Danny’s sharp, tired, and emotionally tangled in ways he...

Neil Young Is Still Rolling Through Time on the Lovably Messy ‘Talkin to the Trees’
Image
Time fades away, but Neil Young never does. He’s been on a like-a-hurricane live roll lately with his ferocious new band the Chrome Hearts, who make their studio debut on Talkin to the Trees. The band came together fast last year, after Neil’s amazing spring tour with his old outlaw pals in Crazy Horse. Since Ralph Molina and Billy Talbot are both over 80, Neil was one of the youngest dudes in his own band — he’s still a spring chicken of 79. Health issues ended the tour early, almost exactly a year ago,...

Tom Morello Joins Bruce Springsteen and Harvard in Trump Standoff: ‘F-ck That Guy’
Image
When Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello took the stage at Boston Calling Music Festival on Sunday evening, his solo set featured a pointed message. On the screen behind him, a graphic compiled nearly two dozen buttons that read and spelled out “Fuck Trump,” labeled the president a “tyrant,” and referred to him as the “Hater in Chief.” Addressing the crowd, Morello said: “Welcome, brothers and sisters, to the last big event before they throw us all in jail.”

Morello used the performance to join the legion of musicians...

From Folk Darling to ‘Full-Time Papi’: The Evolution of Guitarricadelafuente
Image
In the opening shot of the music video for his song “Full Time Papi,” the Spanish artist Álvaro de la Fuente wields a leather whip to the camera. The takes that follow: throuples making out, homoerotic mud fights, and spectacular displays of muscle, all of which erupt into a chorus of other shirtless men, hanging from a rope and chanting, “Yo seré tu full time papi, full time papi, full time papi.”

“Full Time Papi” is the first single off of de la Fuente’s forthcoming album, Spanish Leather, and...

Warren Zevon’s Son Thinks His Dad Would Be Proud to Enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Warren Zevon’s son isn’t sure how his late father would feel about finally getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “By now he’d be 78,” Jordan Zevon tells Rolling Stone. “How would 78-year-old pop react to it? He could have been the crankiest, get-off-my-lawn-guy on the planet, or he might’ve morphed into the story-time grandpa with hard candy in his pocket and think it’s delightful. We just don’t know.”

Forgotten Movies That Made History
Image
As they get more expensive, widely seen and complicatedly filmed, movie milestones are getting hit all the time. Usually, they’re the movies you’d expect: the blockbusters that sweep all the awards and land on top 10 lists for years to come. Sometimes, though, a little nothing movie can show up, make history and leave before anyone notices.

5 Rock & Rule

1983’s Rock & Rule was notable for two things: 1) somehow snagging voice talents like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry; and 2) having suspiciously good animation for a low-budget Canadian cartoon. In fact, the tale of nuclear rat-like creatures using rock music to summon the forces of evil was the first animated movie to use CGI. Unfortunately, none of that helped it to recoup even a fraction of its budget at the box office.

4 Able Edwards

By 2004, we had an entire Lord of the Rings series, so it’s...

See Timothée Chalamet go electric as Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Timothée Chalamet stars as the folk legend in this Oscar-nominated biopic, now streaming on Hulu.

I love a good biopic — especially when it digs into music history. There’s just something about tracing the roots of a sound or an artist that hits deeper than your average rise-and-fall story. “A Complete Unknown” is the latest to do just that, turning the early days of Bob Dylan into a full-on cinematic experience. Directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan himself, this one zeroes in on the moment he shocked the folk world by plugging in and going electric. Whether you’re a Dylan diehard or just here for the awards buzz, “A Complete Unknown” is worth queuing up. You can stream it starting Thursday, March 27 on Hulu.

Conan O’Brien Accepts Mark Twain Prize for Humor While Acknowledging the Kennedy Center’s Uncertain Future
Image
On a night when half a dozen people made jokes about this being the last-ever Mark Twain Prize, Conan O’Brien made sure the ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts ended on a high note.

O’Brien accepted the award for lifetime achievement in comedy Sunday night while acknowledging the backstage turmoil that hangs over the future of the cultural center in Washington, D.C.

O’Brien, 61, was named the 26th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize in mid-January, about three weeks before President Donald Trump upended the Kennedy Center by ousting longtime president Deborah Rutter and board chairman David Rubenstein. Trump dismissed the board of trustees and replaced them with loyalists, who then elected him chairman.

On Sunday, O’Brien specifically thanked Rubenstein and Rutter — drawing an extended round of applause — and also Kennedy Center staffers who, he said, were “worried about what the future might bring.

‘O’Dessa’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: What Happens At Wonderworld?
Image
The ending of Sadie Sink’s O’Dessa is a bittersweet one of a hero(ine) who finds herself alone, yet loved by the masses. O’Dessa tells the story of the titular character, who goes on a journey to “Satylite City” after her mum passes away from an illness. At the age of 19, all O’Dessa has known is the farms that have been poisoned by plasma in a dystopian future. But she also knows that she holds the title and burden of being the “seventh son,” a chosen one, in a prophecy foretold 7 generations earlier. With a guitar made from a burning willow tree will rise a hero who will be “the one” and save all of mankind. In this typically sci-fi dystopian story, there’s a lot more romance than you’d expect.

See, O’Dessa finds herself enthralled by a young man named Euri, who sings...

Folk, Pop and Agit-Prop: Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger After ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Based on Elijah Wald’s hour-by-hour countdown Dylan Goes Electric!, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is a quirky, engaging and (thankfully) never reverential biopic that tracks the journey of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) from acoustic folk to rock amplification. Its main concern is music and mimesis: to showcase Chalamet performing the Dylan songbook with a fidelity to the original beyond the vocal range of the lip-synching Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946) or Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).

The imitations are all, as it were, pitch perfect, but they tend to submerge the political dimension to Dylan’s decision to crank up the volume at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965. The gesture was not about electricity but autonomy, the desire of the artist to free himself from the restrictive meters and themes of an agit-prop folk tradition. Heard retrospectively, “It Ain’t Me Babe” is no longer just...

The Chalamet Effect: How ‘A Complete Unknown’ Has Boosted Bob Dylan’s Catalog
Image
Before this past Christmas, Bob Dylan’s “Song to Woody” was far from one of his most-streamed songs; neither are most of the tracks from Dylan’s 1962 debut album. But all that changed over the holiday season, when “Song to Woody” jumped from an average of 4,000 streams a day to a robust 55,000. And that’s merely one example of what you might call the Chalamet Effect on Dylan’s catalog.

Long before filming on A Complete Unknown even began, those involved in Dylan’s records and publishing wondered what impact...

Timothee Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Crosses $100 Million Globally
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” a musical biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as “Like a Rolling Stone” composer Bob Dylan, has cemented a box office milestone, notching $100 million in global ticket sales.

After seven weeks on the big screen, “A Complete Unknown” has grossed $70 million in North America and $30 million internationally for a grand total of $100 million. The R-rated film ranks as Searchlight’s sixth-highest grossing domestic release of all time and is expected to pass “Sideways” ($71.5 million) to crack the top five in the coming weeks.

James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directed the movie, which reportedly cost between $60 million to $70 million to produce. Since movie theater owners get to keep roughly half of ticket sales, “A Complete Unknown” likely won’t turn a profit in its theatrical run. But still, it’s no small feat these days for specialty fare to crack the $100 million mark.

Searchlight opened “A Complete Unknown” on Christmas Day,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Props Going on Display at Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers (Exclusive)
Image
Props from “A Complete Unknown” will go on display at the Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers in Tulsa, Okla., as part of a new exhibit, “Stepping Into the Unknown,” opening on Feb. 28. It’s the first exhibit to run concurrently at both centers.

The exhibit, presented in partnership with Searchlight Pictures, will “illuminate the deep bond between the two hugely influential American songwriters.” One of the first scenes in the Timothée Chalamet biopic sees Dylan visiting Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) in the hospital immediately upon his arrival in New York City.

Among the props from the James Mangold-directed film are Guthrie’s harmonica; Dylan’s letter to Guthrie; Johnny Cash’s letters to Dylan; “Blowin’ in the Wind” lyrics handwritten on a cocktail napkin; and a handful of fabricated album covers featuring the actors (like Chalamet and Elle Fanning’s rendition of “Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”).

Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This (2024)
A Complete Unknown Comes To Digital February 25, Blu-Ray April 1
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This (2024)
Perhaps the secret to modern-day success in the entertainment business is to name your project the opposite of what you want to happen to it. Example: the top-rated new series on Netflix in 2024 was called “Nobody Wants This.” There’s also this new indie movie distributed through Searchlight called “A Complete Unknown,” and despite that name, knowledge of its existence is rapidly becoming common. So is the Oscar buzz.

The title itself is referring to its subject, Bob Dylan…one of the most iconic rock and roll artists of all time, and certainly not an unknown person. Yet there was a time when nobody knew who Dylan was. He arrived in 1961 New York at just nineteen, hailing from Minnesota, and he knew no one either. Watch Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’ Meet His Hero — Exclusive Clip
Image
The filmmakers behind Best Picture nominee “A Complete Unknown” will be the first ones to tell you that any portrayal of musician Bob Dylan comes with an extreme level of difficulty, so the stakes were high filming the opening sequence, which IndieWire can share in an exclusive clip above.

“‘Song to Woody’ is meant to be Bob’s tribute — it’s both an audition and a heartfelt expression of gratitude to his hero,” said star Timothée Chalamet of the scene where his Dylan goes into Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital to meet and perform the song for his idol Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) and Pete Seeger (Edward Norton.)

Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan, an icon of multiple genres and disciplines, has earned him his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as well as his own tribute at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where past collaborators provided their endorsement of the...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Costume Designer Arianne Phillips Created 8,000-Plus Looks for the Freewheelin’ Style of Bob Dylan
Image
Having partnered with such A-list musicians as Madonna for decades, costume designer and self-described visual artist Arianne Phillips is no stranger to the music world. Her latest work on James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, marks Phillips’ fourth Academy Award nomination for best costume design and her sixth collab with Mangold. The two first teamed up for Girl, Interrupted in 1999, while their work on Walk the Line, which focused on Johnny Cash’s life and career, in 2005 is revisited through the Cash-Dylan friendship depicted in A Complete Unknown. For the film, which landed eight Oscar nominations, Phillips and her bicoastal team of 42 created approximately 8,000 costumes, including 67 wardrobe changes for Timothée Chalamet in the starring role.

“So much happens in the first four years of Bob’s career that it was really thrilling, as a costume designer, to guide the audience through his dramatic style evolution,” Phillips tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Another Marvel Actor Nearly Took Edward Norton's Oscar-Nominated Role in This 2024 Drama

Quick LinksEdward Norton Replaced Benedict Cumberbatch in A Complete UnknownWhy Did Benedict Cumberbatch Drop Out of A Complete Unknown?Edward Norton's Casting as Pete Seeger Worked Out For the Best

Although Edward Norton never did get to mingle with the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after only a single outing as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, his career certainly hasn’t slowed down one bit. Last week, he received his fourth Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. He may be up against some heavy hitters like Kieren Culkin in A Real Pain and Guy Pierce in The Brutalist, but if there was ever a more appropriate time for him to finally earn an Oscar win, it'd be now. In the film, Norton completely vanishes into his performance of Seeger, providing his own singing voice and perfectly capturing the...

Final voting is February 11-18. The 97th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 2, and air live on ABC at 7 p.m. Et/ 4 p.m. Pt. We update our picks through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2025 Oscar predictions.

The State of the Race

The Best Costume Design nominees are “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu,” and “Wicked,” which is the favorite. However, “A Complete Unknown” the surprise entry, could be a dark horse.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” tells the origin story of Elphaba/the Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande). Costume designer Paul Tazewell’s approach to Elphaba and Glinda’s costumes was to create intentional differences and highlight the juxtaposition of dark and light, textured versus refined, using a connection with nature for Elphaba and a floating sensibility for Galinda.

Bob Dylan Was ‘Very Paranoid’ While Appearing on ‘SNL’ According to Eric Idle
Image
Timothée Chalamet will be pulling double duty on Saturday Night Live this weekend, as both host and musical guest. Since the actor’s music career so far only consists of playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, seemingly he will be performing on SNL as Dylan. Sadly, he’s a month too late to do a snarling cover of “Must Be Santa.”

But long before Chalamet was booked on the show, Bob Dylan himself appeared on SNL for the first and last time in October of 1979. Dylan performed three songs from his Christian-themed album Slow Train Coming.

The host of the episode was Eric Idle, who claimed to be ill. The Monty Python star performed his monologue from a stretcher, following a cold open in which Buck Henry asks Lorne Michaels to put him in as the host instead. In a Reddit Ama, Idle revealed that it wasn’t just...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Review – Chalamet Shines in Bob Dylan Biopic
Image
Just months after delivering what many fans dubbed as his career best performance as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part II, Timothee Chalamet is back impressing audiences and further showcasing his range. In this long awaited biopic, Chalamet plays singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in the early 1960’s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. Previously advertised with the title ‘Going Electric’, the film not only follows Dylan’s rise to fame but the disappointment of his fans when he ditched his acoustic guitar and solo presence for an electric guitar and a band. Superbly acted by a talented ensemble helmed flawlessly by Chalamet, A Complete Unknown is a competent biopic that puts music front and center, but loses focus on its character development in the process.

How Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, & Johnny Cash Each Shape Bob Dylan's Evolution In A Complete Unknown
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for A Complete Unknown!

James Mangold’s hit musical biopic A Complete Unknown tells the legendary story of Bob Dylan’s transformation from niche folk poet to mainstream rock star in the mid-1960s. In doing so, it introduces other music legends like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Johnny Cash to a whole new generation of Dylan fans by characterizing them as stepping stones on the singer’s journey to stardom.

The movie draws extensively from Elijah Wald’s non-fiction book Dylan Goes Electric! as well as other real-world sources, including Dylan’s actual written correspondence with Johnny Cash. It’s also clear that D. A. Pennebaker’s 1967 documentary Don’t Look Back heavily inspired A Complete Unknown. But it takes more than historical documents to render a compelling dramatization on the big screen. That’s why Mangold and his co-screenwriter Jay Cocks have turned...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Channels the Secret of Bob Dylan
Image
“A Complete Unknown” is the rare Hollywood movie that has inspired a reckoning. Everywhere, on social media, in mainstream media, or simply on the part of so many who have seen the film, a tingling conversation is taking place — a kind of collective meditation/investigation into who Bob Dylan was, who he is, what he meant back then and what he means now. What’s striking is that very little of this is Dylan nostalgia — i.e., the boomers getting misty-eyed with self-importance about “their” beloved icon. And if that’s what it was, it would be lame. (No one would hate it more than Dylan.)

The Dylan conversation that’s been ignited is very present tense and alive, and very exploratory. It’s about the movie, but it’s bigger than the movie. It’s about everyone who has seen “A Complete Unknown,” or everyone who simply grew up with Dylan,...

Why Pete Seeger Was On Trial In A Complete Unknown – The True Story Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for A Complete Unknown!

A Complete Unknown leaves Pete Seeger’s trial vague, brushing over everything but the sentencing speech, but the actual story is more fascinating than what’s depicted. Although Bob Dylan is the star of the 2024 biopic, multiple other characters in A Complete Unknown have a significant impact on his journey from a newbie to one of the world’s best songwriters. One of the most influential is Pete Seeger, a folk singer who gained fame alongside his friend Woody Guthrie.

Because the narrative centers on Bob Dylan’s life in the early 1960s, Seeger’s backstory is only really told when it directly impacts the main character. The one exception to this comes early in A Complete Unknown when Pete Seeger appears in a courtroom for the sentencing of his trial. He mentions one of his songs being deemed “UnAmerican,” offering to sing it,...

Image
The 2024 Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, leaves out one amusing detail about the singer’s life in the 1960s that is entertaining to look back on. Over the past six decades, he has become known as one of the best songwriters of all time, winning a Nobel Prize in Literature for his lyrics. Because of his prolific effect on the folk and rock ‘n’ roll genres, many filmmakers have produced movies about Bob Dylan.

Director James Mangold directed and co-wrote the 2024 film A Complete Unknown, which outlines the musician’s life in the early 1960s. The film was lauded for its performances, cinematography, and entertainment value. However, A Complete Unknown makes numerous big changes to Bob Dylan’s story that could be called into question. Not every change has a significant impact on the story, though. The Bob Dylan biopic leaves out one funny detail that’s narratively insignificant but entertaining to think about.

Why Bob Dylan Gives Woody Guthrie's Harmonica Back In A Complete Unknown
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Complete Unknown!James Mangold’s new biopic of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown, charts the singer’s rise from a fledgling folk singer inspired by the musical traditions of Woody Guthrie to a full-blown rock superstar. With the instruments to match, naturally, A Complete Unknown's soundtrack is memorable. The movie plays heavily on the mythology surrounding Dylan’s visit to the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital as a 20-year-old, where he found his hero Guthrie incapacitated by Huntington's disease. According to A Complete Unknown, Guthrie then gave his harmonica to Dylan, only for the young singer to return with it four years later.

The film shows folk legend Pete Seeger also visiting the hospital as Dylan plays his "Song to Woody", a tribute he wrote for Guthrie and his first song of any significance, upon first meeting his idol. The youngster certainly earns his stripes,...

Edward Norton Found the Keys to Pete Seeger in ‘A Complete Unknown’: His Music Was Intricate and His Toilet Smelled
Image
There’s a priceless moment early in “A Complete Unknown” when folk icon Pete Seeger returns to the cabin where he lives with his family after offering a young singer named Bob Dylan a place to sleep for the night. Seeger shows Dylan around the house, proudly displaying the modern amenities of the rustic abode. But when he talks about how the wondrous new composting toilet doesn’t even stink, his kids chime in from the next room: Yes, Dad, it does!

The moment is quintessential Pete Seeger, a man who wore the same gentle smile whether he was leading sing-alongs or facing adversity that included a lengthy period in the 1950s where he was blacklisted after being at the height of his popularity with the folk group The Weavers. Seeger’s essential goodness always stood out, wrote Elijah Wald in “Dylan Goes Electric!,” the book that served as the inspiration for “A Complete Unknown.
