10 TV Shows That Tricked Us About Who The Main Character Was
Image
There are other possible possibilities with TV characters who end up being different from expected, such as the gag where the show jokingly introduces one character before directing focus to a less conventionally appealing one (which might also involve the first character's death). Misleading ad campaigns for movies and TV shows might also (intentionally) confuse the audience about who the main character is supposed to be. Hopefully, the decoy protagonist is a satisfying twist, rather than annoying shock bait.

The trope known as the "decoy protagonist" describes when a piece of media, such as a TV show, introduces a character and tricks the audience into believing they are the story's main character. This may be the case with TV shows that killed main characters early, completely undermining what the audience thought their long-term role would be. The most common scenario with the decoy protagonist is that after a character's introduction,...

‘Monster on a Plane’ Trailer – Monster Movie Looks Like ‘Critters’ at 30,000 Feet
Image
What would happen if one of those adorable Crites from the Critters franchise made its way onto an airplane? Well, that looks to essentially be the premise behind the upcoming monster movie Monster on a Plane, which has unleashed its official trailer this week.

An Official Selection of the 42nd Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff), Monster on a Plane will premiere later this month. Watch the trailer below for a sneak peek.

In the film from writer/director Ezra Tsegaye, “Professor Singh embarks on a journey to bring a mysterious creature from a distant land to Germany. However, when unexpected turbulence strikes the airplane, the beast awakens and starts attacking passengers. Stewardess Nathalie and teacher Ben team up to regain control amidst the chaos. But as they also uncover a ruthless murderer among the passengers, things quickly spiral out of control.”

Sky Sharks (2020)
Official Trailer for Totally Ridiculous CGI Mayhem 'Sky Sharks' Movie
Sky Sharks (2020)
"These are sharks... but they can fly, you say?" Dark Sky Films has released an official trailer for a totally ridiculous action CGI-spectacle called Sky Sharks, from filmmaker Marc Fehse. First there was Iron Sky, then there was Sharknado, then there was the Iron Sky sequel (The Coming Race), now there's Sky Sharks. After an arctic research team discovers a long-lost Nazi warship frozen in the ice, they inadvertently unleash the Third Reich's unknown secret weapon: Sky Sharks. What if the Nazis had been secretly developing giant modified flying sharks flown by undead super-humans? Yeah, that's all they've got for a concept this time. The film's cast includes Tony Todd, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Eva Habermann, Naomi Grossman, Amanda Bearse, Robert Lasardo, and Dave Sheridan. This is one of the strangest trailers you'll ever see, with barely any good footage, and a title placed over a random shot of a city. Huh?...

Hell yes - man in suit! My goodness this looks so revolting. But it might be ridiculous fun? Or not? Only one way to find out ha! Dive right in. But please make sure you wear a mask. Cyst Review – FrightFest 2020
Image
Fans of wonderfully wooden trash, look no further. Tyler Russell’s vintage monster movie throwback is a total blast of blood, puss, and ominously oozy bodily fluids. A loud, brash, B-movie love letter, it’s the sort of geniusly crap genre fare that caters to a very specific audience, and does so in the least pretentious, most affectionate way imaginable. Expect stupid, get stupider, and love it all the same.

Mimicking the 50s/60s drive-in charm, Cyst goes all-in on its title right from the off. Maniacal skin specialist Dr. Guy (Troll 2’s George Hardy) loses control of his dastardly pimple-erasing machine, accidentally creating a giant cyst monster that lays waste to his entire surgery, and everyone in it. On her last day on the job, no-nonsense nurse Patricia (Sky Sharks’ Eva Habermann) leads the charge, but with the doctor losing his mind and the monster mutating more and more by the second,...

Frightfest 2020: ‘Cyst’ Review
Image
Stars: Greg Sestero, Eva Habermann, Jason Douglas, Gene Jones, George Hardy, Darren Ewing, Francesca Santoro, Kyle Roberts | Written by Tyler Russell, Andy Silverman | Directed by Tyler Russell

It’s the early 1960s and a small-town doctor invents a machine that uses laser technology to remove skin abnormalities. He pulls out all the stops to make sure his final chance to get the patent on his ‘Get Gone’ appliance goes smoothly. But his nurse thinks the contraption is dangerous and not ready. The struggle between the two causes the apparatus to malfunction creating a giant cyst monster that goes on a bloody rampage.

Very much in the vein of the William Castle and Rgoer Corman flicks of the 50s and 60s, Cyst is – like the remake of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die which also screened as part of Frightfest – very much an homage to the films of that period, with set and costume design,...

Cyst - Jennie Kermode - 16335
Fotoshoot 2024
A plastic surgery clinic full of nervous customers. A frustrated nurse on her last day. A crazed doctor determined to revolutionise treatment with his new laser-powered machine. When an accident occurs, a cyst removed from a body gains independent life, grows to gigantic size and goes on the rampage. Some people will never comprehend the appeal of this kind of film. For those who do, it seems to promise thrills galore. Unfortunately, whilst there is some fun to be had, it never quite delivers as it should.

The best thing about the film is Eva Habermann as the nurse. It's tough to deliver a multi-layered performance that still works with this type of material, but necessary to sustaining such a film over time, and she makes a very effective lead. Less successful is George Hardy as the doctor. He's got his manic laugh down well and delivers on evil gurning but.

Frightfest 2020: ‘Sky Sharks’ Review
Image
Stars: Barbara Nedeljakova, Eva Habermann, Thomas Morris, Tony Todd, Dave Sheridan, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Amanda Bearse, Naomi Grossman, Robert Lasardo, Mick Garris, Lar Park-Lincoln, Noush Skaugen, Lynn Lowry, Asami, J. Larose, Nick Principe | Written by Marc Fehse, Carsten Fehse, A.D. Morel | Directed by Marc Fehse

Deep in the ice of the antarctic, a team of geologists uncover an old nazi laboratory still intact where dark experiments had occured. In order to conquer the world, the Nazis created modified sharks who were able to fly and whose riders are genetically mutated, undead super-humans. A miltary task force called “Project: Dead Flesh” – reanimated US soldiers who fell in Vietnam – is put together to prevent world downfall.

Part Sharknado, part Iron Sky, Marc Fehse’s Sky Sharks is, technically, one of those so-bad-its-good film – only this one, unlike others of its ilk, has been made to be that way, created to be as cheesy,...

A Troll Awakens in First Trailer for Wacky 'Trolls World' Fantasy Horror
"You must urgently find me the old book of magic!" Devilworks has released an official trailer for Trolls World, a German fantasy horror, still looking for distribution at the Efm coming up later this month. This trailer may not help much. Not to be confused with the Trolls World Tour animated sequel out this year, this movie is a throwback to the "best worst movie" horror Trolls 2. "Packed with special effects and multi-dimensions, Trolls World follows an evil troll who is accidentally brought back to life and is out for revenge for his 700 years of suffering. He possesses the body of a young woman and sets his sights on unleashing an army of trolls to take over the world." Starring Eva Habermann, George Hardy, Katy Karrenbauer, Ralf Bauer, Cecilia Pillado, Désirée Nick, and Jirí Lábus. This really does look like a terrible D-movie lost in time, but at least they made a practical puppet.

DVD Review: Lexx – The Complete Series
Lexx: The Complete Series

Stars: Brian Downey, Eva Habermann, Michael McManus, Jeffrey Hirschfield, Xenai Seeberg | Created by Paul Donovan

A cult hit known for its quirky, sexually charged adult storylines and ‘boldly’ talking sci-fi where others had not gone before, Lexx finally hits DVD in a complete series boxset from Mediumrare Entertainment.

Opening with four television movies, Lexx caused a huge splash on its initial airing on both sides of the pond, with Channel 5 (as it known at the time) scoring massive ratings for both the 4-movie mini-series and the three series that followed. Very much a product of the 90s, the series is set in a dystopian future and follows a rag-tag group of fugitives flying around in a giant dragonfly-looking spaceship, the Lexx of the title, which is, according to its creators, “the most powerful destructive force in the universe”.

Unlike many space-set sci-fi series of the...
