Michael O’Donoghue’s second go-around as a writer for Saturday Night Live didn’t go as well as the first. Brought back after Lorne Michaels and the original cast headed out for parts unknown, O’Donoghue, the show’s new head writer, wanted to give it a flaming Viking funeral. In other words, “he wanted to destroy the show,” explained Tim Kazurinsky in the SNL oral history Live From New York.
One reason O’Donoghue believed the show should die, according to Mr. Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O’Donoghue: He thought the cast was horrible. He particularly hated Kazurinsky for his relatively tame, unassuming style (O’Donoghue believed Kazurinsky’s Second City was well past its prime) and deemed most of the cast “losers” and “shit.” There were only two performers O’Donoghue liked — Eddie Murphy, for obvious reasons, and Christine Ebersole.
Ebersole is more of a puzzle.

During the mid-1970s, television producer Aaron Spelling and the writing duo of Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts hit upon the most spectacularly novel idea: Viewers loved watching women solve crimes. The eureka moment occurred in 1974 when the great and ludicrously beautiful Angie Dickinson scored a primetime hit with "Police Woman." While I'd argue Dickinson could've burned up the Nielsen ratings via weekly readings of Russian literature shot at the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, she was a must-watch sensation as a glamorously attired detective. Though the scripts were rigorously formulaic for a '70s hour-long cop show, Dickinson's showbiz rep attracted a host of top tier guest stars; "Police Woman" didn't have much of a hook, but thanks to its star, it had plenty of sizzle.
It took some prodding (ABC execs Barry Diller and Michael Eisner abhorred Spelling's pitch), but "Charlie's Angels" became the breakout hit of the 1976 season.

On Jan. 4, 1984, NBC unveiled Night Court, which went on to air for nine seasons and get a recent revival. The Hollywood Reporter weighed in with a full review, headlined “Night Court convicted of being consistently amusing TV sitcom,” as it entered its sophomore run:
Night Court is a consistently funny sitcom created by Reinhold Weege, a writer-producer for the old Barney Miller series. Its venue, weekly parade of various weirdos, and quirky regulars are reminiscent of Miller. And, like Miller, Night Court has more laughs per episode than most sitcoms.
Anchoring the series is Harry Anderson, as unorthodox Manhattan arraignment court judge, Harry Stone. Judge Stone is sharp and fair, but he seizes every available opportunity to turn due process of law into an excuse for levity. Anderson manages to wring just the right amount of irony out of lines like, “Being a judge means never having to say you’re sorry.

Charlie’s Angels and its cast was a phenomenon in the 1970s. The TV series ran for five seasons from 1976-1981. It was produced by Aaron Spelling, who also created hits such as The Love Boat, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place.
The show was immensely popular with viewers but got mixed reviews from critics. Some called it “Jiggle TV” because it emphasized the sex appeal of its female cast.

Film and TV star who found fame as one of Charlie’s Angels and was a Bond girl opposite Roger Moore in A View to a Kill
Tanya Roberts, who has died aged 65 of sepsis, was already a film and television star when she was cast as a “Bond girl”, Stacey Sutton, opposite Roger Moore in A View to a Kill (1985). Moore was 58 at the time, and looking somewhat creaky as he scaled the Golden Gate bridge during his final outing in the role of James Bond, while Roberts was 30 and having the time of her life commandeering a fire engine during a chase through San Francisco, albeit with a little help from bluescreen technology.
She was second choice for the part after the producers were unable to secure Priscilla Presley. This hardly fazed Roberts, who had already made her name stepping into another actor’s shoes when she was cast...

Tanya Roberts died Monday night at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after earlier in the day Roberts’ publicist revealed that he had given an incorrect statement and announced her death prematurely.
Roberts’ publicist, Mike Pingel, confirmed her death to TheWrap via statement. According to the statement, the 65-year-old’s cause of death was from a urinary tract infection that spread to her kidney, gallbladder, liver and then bloodstream.
Roberts’ domestic partner Lance O’Brien received the phone call from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center last night at their home confirming her passing. O’Brien told TMZ, Extra and The New York Times that Roberts died Monday evening.
Pingel previously told The New York Times that Roberts was hospitalized and was in grave condition after she collapsed on Christmas Eve while walking her dogs, but he did so after on Sunday giving information to many outlets that Roberts had already died. No cause of death was given,...

Without question, being a stepparent can be rough. It’s a balancing act between wanting what’s best for the child, and the need to ingratiate oneself and hopefully, earn and obtain love. This is a tightrope that Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) has no interest in walking – if he can’t implement his perfect family plan, he switches policies in the most violent way possible. Welcome to the world of The Stepfather (1987), a pretty good thriller elevated to classic status due to a legendary performance by O’Quinn.
And while Jerry Blake has little patience for deviation from his ideals, so too do Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins – all identities that our stepdad creates in his twisted pursuit of perfection. (If at first you don’t succeed, kill and kill again.) The Stepfather proves that home is where the hurt is.

If the transformation is a character’s external change then the meltdown is the internal equivalent. Sometimes the most terrifying part of a horror film isn’t when the monster pops out, but when a character loses his or her grip on reality. The psychosis can begin gradually, exacerbated by stress, sickness, or an outside tormentor. Often the character begins a film in complete control of his or her mental faculties. But control is a relative term, and in a horror film, the illusion of control can be just as powerful as actual agency. The options: denial or embracement. The psychological break will come soon enough. The only question is, how broken will the person be once it does?

A few questions: 1) What the hell is happening? 2) Is this some sick joke? 3) Is it all over? Try your best to make sense out of this: according to a dubious press release, the campy, low-budget 1986 horror movie "Troll" (followed by the so-bad-it's-good cult classic "Troll 2") is being "reprised" for a whole new generation by original writer/director John Carl Buechler as a 3D animated feature entitled -- and I swear to god this is true -- "Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter Jr." It gets better! 2015 Oscar winner Patricia Arquette is allegedly voicing the role of a witch. “The original ‘Troll’ film has achieved cult status, and based upon its success we believed that the timing was right to produce an updated 3D animated version for a whole new generation of filmgoers," said Buechler in a statement. “We are already in pre-production. We have the financing in place and a strong international distributor.

There's a new wizard in town! Sort of. Sc Films International, a London-based company, is in pre-production for a new project which will reprise 'Troll', a 1986 cult classic. It is to be produced as an animated film and television series titled Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter, Jr. However, do not confuse this with the J.K. Rowling franchise as Harry Potter, Harry Potter Jr., and his family were characters in Troll which was independently produced and distributed 11 years before Rowling's version!
The general synopsis is that the animated feature will revisit the magical world created in the original Troll film. Envision an evil, magical troll wizard as the villain doing what villains...

Black Sunday: Remastered Edition (1960) Lorber Films Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
One of director Mario Bava’s most acclaimed works, Black Sunday is a strikingly photographed “old dark castle” thriller revolving around witchcraft and possession. Barbara Steele (Piranha) gives a hypnotic performance as Katia, the unfortunate look-alike descendent of a witch who intends to possess her. This highly influential film, also shot by Bava, was the precursor to countless American and European gothic horrors. This is the uncut European print with a few extra minutes of footage, a different English track and Robert Nicolosi’s haunting original score. After years of ugly public domain releases, Black Sunday is finally being presented in its original aspect ratio with a high definition transfer struck from a pristine 35Mm archival print.
Special Features:
• Audio commentary by Tim Lucas (author of Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark).
• Original Bava theatrical trailers.

20th Century Home Entertainment continues to explore their library, releasing Blu-ray editions of popular and important films. Recently, two of Woody Allen’s best films were released and are worth a second look.
Allen as a comedian was a witty, smart writer and performer, coming from a literate line of humor that was in rapid decline by the 1960s. In some ways, he was the bridge between that era and today when men like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert carry the mantle. His early films were very funny and as a director, he was learning the ropes, figuring out what worked while entertaining the masses.
That culminated in Annie Hall, his 1977 serious comedy featuring his then-paramour Diane Keaton. The movie was a quantum leap in sophistication, partially from the smart script co-written with Marshall Brickman, but a most self-assured hand behind the camera. Allen shows a maturity as a filmmaker...

This is the fifth in a multi-part series, The Year in Television 2011.
Tastes in television can of course be very subjective. One show may be your cup of tea, but not for the person sitting next to you. For instance, I love Louie, but my husband can’t stand it. I thought Torchwood: Miracle Day was a yawner, and yet the show seemed to have its vocal fans right here on AfterElton.
But where reasonable people can differ on any number of shows, the list below we can probably All agree on. These are the true TV stinkers of 2011. Now there probably were worse shows in 2011 than what appears on this list (H8R for instance), but all the projects appearing below added insult to injury: they might actually have been good. Our list includes the new shows that totally botched a decent concept... or squandered a good cast. And...

Everywhere you go its zombies, zombies, and zombies. George Romero and others are walking around with their chest puffed out as they knew something years ago that few paid attention to. And that is that zombies are cool. From videos games to TV shows, the zombie culture is sweeping the nation and doesn’t look to slow down anytime in the near future. Credit books like Wold War Z, movies like Zombieland, and games like Black Ops, that have propelled the younger generation to fall in love with the undead as we horror fiends have many years prior. Keeping the momentum in full swing in the next incarnation of a film based off a popular book is Zombie Blondes.
Zombie Blondes is a book written by Brian James. Smash Media Films has hired Lior Chefetz and Joe Swanson to start penning a script to the popular cheerleaders of the undead novel.

Zombie Blondes. Oh, the possibility for jokes here. Would putting a bullet in their brains really even do any good? Would they purge every time they devoured flesh? We could go on endlessly! In any event ...
According to Variety Smash Media Films has tapped Lior Chefetz and Joe Swanson to script the horror flick Zombie Blondes.
Harry Winer and Shelley Hack will produce.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Brian James and follows a girl at a new high school who hopes to find acceptance with the cheerleader crowd only to find out there may be something life-threatening in the activity.

Rights to Brian James' novel "Zombie Blondes" have been picked up by Smash Media Films. The production outfit - along with producers Harry Winer and Shelley Hack - will deveop the story with screenwriters Lior Chefetz and Joe Swanson. The book's publisher described the tale like this: From the moment Hannah Sanders arrived in town, she felt there was something wrong. A lot of houses were for sale, and the town seemed infected by an unearthly quiet. And then, on Hannah.s first day of classes, she ran into a group of cheerleaders.the most popular girls in school. The odd thing was that they were nearly identical in appearance: blonde, beautiful, and deathly pale. But Hannah wants desperately to fit in.regardless of what her friend Lukas is telling her: If she...

Now it's more of a case of fallen Angels.
The ABC network tonight confirmed that its relaunched Charlie's Angels series has been given the chop after just four episodes.
Rachael Taylor, Minka Kelly and Annie Ilonzeh starred as Miami-based detectives, with Ramon Rodriguez as Bosley, Victor Garber as Charlie, and Drew Barrymore among the executive producers. Barrymore starred in both big-screen versions of Charlie's Angels directed by McG.
Production has been shut down on the show though the four remaining completed episodes will continue to air. ABC had originally commissioned 13 episodes.
Charlie's Angels premiered to 8.76million viewers. But it had dropped by almost three million to 5.96million viewers by the fourth week.
Last week, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor were filmed kissing while shooting on Miami Beach in what has been seen as a ploy to boost interest in the show. The passionate kiss didn't prove to be enough.

Playing an L.A. cop can weigh heavily on an actor, so what better way to lighten up the mood than by channeling Charlie’s Angels?
That is precisely what three stars of TNT’s Southland did during a break in shooting the episode airing this Tuesday night — and TVLine has this exclusive peek at stars Ben McKenzie, Michael Cudlitz and Regina King striking the pose made famous by Sabrina, Kelly and Jill. (We’re purists; no other angels ever existed. Apologies to Shelley Hack).
Now in its third season, TNT’s Southland airs Tuesdays at 10/9c.

The Stepfather (1987)D: Joseph RubenJill Schoelen, Shelley Hack, Terry O'Quinn Long before he was "lost," Terry O'Quinn frightened audiences and kids of single mothers with his horrifying portrayal of Henry Morrison/Jerry Blake, a milquetoast psychopath who moves from family to family in search of the "the ideal life." He appears more Norman Rockwell than Norman Bates. But, of course, looks are deceiving, and when Blake doesn't get his way, he tends to go a little mad sometimes. And so it is with mother-daughter duo Susan (Hack) and...

Noah and Reid finally have it out, leading to a shocking (okay, not so shocking) conclusion.

2:05Pm Est: Luke is looking at his screensaver (which is an actual Nuke publicity still) when Dr. Bob comes in and asks him to attend a meeting about possibly selling the hospital ... because having a hot gay blonde will grease the wheels. Bob wants Reid and Noah to attend as well, so we're looking at Oakdale's own Charlie's Gayngels all in one room. Luke is obviously Farrah, Reid is Kate Jackson, and Noah ... well Noah is Shelley Hack.
Speaking of ... Reid is examining Noah and says "any questions?" Noah says "yeah, when did you start having feelings for my boyfriend?" Without missing a beat, Reid nonchalantly says "the second or third time I saw him." This is not going to end well.

The first Troll film concerned the magical adventures of a teenager named Harry Potter. The second, according to a new documentary, is the Best Worst Movie ever made. And no one seems sure if there even was a third movie. In this special report EW examines the twisted, crazy, and frequently so-bad-it's-hilarious world of... Troll! Next: “I don’t think Troll 2 is the worst movie of all-time. I think Transformers 2 is the worst movie of all time.” On a beautiful Brooklyn evening last July, Michael Paul Stephenson took part in a question-and-answer session following an outdoor screening of the 1990 horror movie Troll 2.

John Forsythe was a leading actor on stage, screen and television from the late 1940s, but was never seen in one of his best known roles. He lent his distinctive voice to the role of Charles Townsend, who sent an array of lovely agents on various cases by speaker phone in the Charlie’s Angels television series from 1976 to 1981. The Angels originally included Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith, and were later joined by Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts. He reprised his role for feature film adaptations twenty years later, Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as a new generation of beautiful detectives. Forsythe became a silver-haired sex symbol in his sixties, when he starred as ruthless oil tycoon Blake Carrington in the ABC prime-time soap opera Dynasty from 1981 to 1989. He frequently found himself at the...

Though many recent primetime schedules are littered with unsuccessful revivals of old TV shows, ABC thinks the time is right for a new version of Charlie's Angels. It's actually the third time that this has been attempted. Will this one actually make it?
Created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, the original Charlie's Angels debuted on ABC on September 22, 1976. The story revolves around three picture-perfect young ladies who work for a private investigation agency and use their beauty and skills to solve cases.

David Doyle played helper John Bosley and John Forsythe voiced the unseen owner of the agency, Charlie Townsend. Fawcett left after one season was replaced by Cheryl Ladd. Chicago – I could be wrong, but my love for the 1986 original and the lack of critic screenings for the remake opening today leads me to feel confident in saying that the DVD of the original “The Stepfather,” available on the format for the first time this week, is the way to go this weekend if you’re looking for a nasty slice of domestic terror.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
Clever, well-made, wonderfully performed, and simply thrilling, “The Stepfather” is one of the best movies of its kind of the ’80s. Even if you do journey out to see the remake, make sure you catch up with the original too.

The Stepfather (1987) Synopsis: Jerry (Terry O'Quinn) is disappointed in his family so he kills them, calmly cleans himself up, and heads out to begin a new life. He finds it with single mother Susan (Shelley Hack) and her daughter Stephanie (Jill Schoelen), but the harder he tries to make things work the more rebellious Stephanie seems to get. Maybe this isn't the perfect family he was looking for. Maybe it's time to move on again... Killer Scene: Jerry refuses to meet with Stephanie's therapist so the doctor poses as a potential home-buyer and sets up a showing through the real estate office where Jerry works. They meet in an empty house for sale, but when the therapist tips his hand a bit too much by downplaying the importance of family, something Jerry values above all else, Jerry decides he can't listen to it anymore. He takes hold of a two by four piece of wood and thwacks...

Try to imagine this DVD release roundup in 3-D for maximum enjoyment.
What's new on DVD Tuesday? We'll bookend this roundup with the two best releases. Links to add them to your queues provided because I'm sweet and helpful like that.
Coraline - I loved the use of 3D in Coraline so I'm wondering how it will transfer to the flatter world of home entertainment: Will that tunnel into Other Mother be as beckoning? Would the transformative acrobatic sister act pay off quite so well? Even if they won't, the film's imaginative visuals and fun character play will pull you into its rewarding tale of a bored little girl suddenly fighting for her soul and her parent's lives in a fantasy world that's not quite like her own. Coraline's journey is often compared to Alice's trip through the looking glass or down the rabbit hole. Miyazaki's Spirited Away was also described that way.

Interested in getting two steps closer to completing your The Stepfather autograph collection? Now's your chance! The Hollywood Show has announced actresses Shelley Hack and Jill Schoelen will be attending their July 18-19 convention in Burbank, California to meet and greet fans and reminisce about the old 1987 classic.
The Stepfather is a chilling tale describing a control freak with a nasty habit of marrying single mother's and then killing them and the children when his rules are broken one too many times. Once the bodies are disposed of and safely tucked away, he assumes a new identity and tries yet again to establish the perfect family.
For those that missed the film the first time around, there is hope; a DVD release was also recently announced and will be available in October of 2009!

Back in 1987, a surprise little sleeper about a dad in search of the perfect family terrified audiences. well, at least this particular audience member.
