Here's something we didn’t have on our 2025 bingo card: Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are being used to deter wolves from attacking cattle on farms across the nation. Now that you've stopped laughing, we can tell you that it's true, as a new report from The Wall Street Journal goes into great detail to describe how the Usda is using "drone cowhands" to fend off the wolves and save livestock.
Part of the strategy involves using drones equipped with thermal cameras to expose wolves and bathe them in bright lights. Once spotted, a loudspeaker blasts all sorts of irritating noise, including the heated argument between Johansson and Driver that's featured in the Oscar-winning 2019 Netflix movie, Marriage Story. The strategy seems to be working, as after wolves killed 11 cows in the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon over a 20-day period, drones were deployed to knock that number back to just two deaths over 85 days.

If you like your coffee black, like your men. If you speak jive. If you know a hospital is a building with patients in it. Then it sounds, to us, like you know exactly what kind of movie you like, and you'reready for the absurd genius that is Airplane!, now streaming on Pluto TV. Released in 1980, Airplane! is more than just a spoof — it’s one of the sharpest, silliest, and most relentlessly quotable comedies ever made. Written and directed by the iconic trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (collectively known as Zaz), the film is a near shot-for-shot remake of the 1957 drama Zero Hour!, only reimagined as pure comedy. And not just a comedy — it's the comedy, the one that redefined what cinematic parody could be.
The genius of Airplane! isn’t just in its jokes (though there are thousands) — it’s in how straight they’re delivered.

In 2008, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) appeared in a post-credit sequence for "Iron Man" where he was startled to see a man dressed in black standing by a window in his home. "Who the hell are you?" Stark asks, prompting the man to step from the shadows and reveal himself: "Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D.," played by none other than Samuel L. Jackson.
This 30-second scene -- placed after the credits at the behest of director Edgar Wright -- shifted the pop culture landscape and all but ensured audiences would start sitting through lengthy end titles just to catch a few seconds teasing the next big adventure. The trend continues to this day, and it's almost disappointing when a movie, especially a big blockbuster, doesn't feature something at the very end.
So, well done, Marvel, for kick-starting the post-credit scene trend.
Except... they didn't.

M. Night Shyamalan is moving on from Trap with something a little more romantic — but still plenty strange. Remain, his next supernatural thriller, is officially underway, and Deadline has confirmed the ensemble will include none other than Tracy Ifeachor, who broke out earlier this year as ER doctor Heather Collins on The Pitt. Ifeachor joins a packed cast that also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, and Maria Dizzia, alongside previously announced leads Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor.
The twist? Remain isn’t just a movie. Shyamalan is teaming up with bestselling author Nicholas Sparks on a unique dual project — one story, told two ways: Shyamalan will direct and co-write the film, while Sparks pens a novel based on the same characters and concept. The film will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 23, 2026.

A while back, it was announced that The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan and The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks were teaming up for a supernatural romantic thriller called Remain. Shyamalan and Sparks created the original story together, with Shyamalan going off to write a screenplay based on the story while Sparks turned the idea into a novel. As was said at the time, “Both will be based on the same concept and set of characters but designed for their individual mediums.” The Sparks novel is scheduled to reach store shelves this year, on October 7th, and Amazon is already accepting pre-orders for the 352 page book at This Link. The Shyamalan film will reach theatres one year later, just in time for Halloween, as Warner Bros. Pictures has given it an October 23, 2026 release date. Filming began a few weeks ago, and now Deadline has confirmed that Julie Hagerty (Airplane), Jay O. Sanders...

Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.
Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.
There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

Comedy, of course, is subjective. There's no one film that's going to be universally funny to every human being, as comedy is based on social mores, history, politics, and a slew of other cultural factors that mutate quickly and differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. Indeed, what one found funny in 2005 may not be as funny in 2025, so time also plays a factor. And while certain comedies have lasted for centuries -- Shakespeare and Moliere are still being performed to this day -- some comedies from just a few decades ago are already dated. Heck, sometimes the time of day can be a factor. A midnight movie may be funnier than a Sunday matinée of the same flick.
But there is an objective, scientific way to gauge the effects comedy has on us: our laughter. If a film makes us laugh out loud repeatedly, then we can take measurements, right? And...

‘Matlock’ acting Emmy submissions include Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall, plus these 3 guest stars
CBS will submit nine cast members from Matlock Season 1 for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has learned.
Kathy Bates is entering the Best Drama Actress category for playing Madeline Kingston, a wealthy woman who's masquerading as a kind-hearted lawyer named Madeline "Matty" Matlock. Madeline uses her manipulation skills (and an assist from Werther's Originals) to try to uncover which partner at Jacobson Moore covered up evidence that could have prevented the opioid epidemic that led to her daughter's death. Bates, an Oscar winner for Misery (1990), has already won two Emmys in her career, for Two and a Half Men and American Horror Story: Coven, but this would be her first lead Emmy victory.
Five performers are campaigning in the two featured categories: Sam Anderson as Edwin Kingston, David Del Rio as Billy Martinez, and Jason Ritter as Julian Markston in Best Drama Supporting Actor; and Leah Lewis as Sarah Yang and...

Nothing makes watching an early '00s movie better than hearing previously unheard-of behind-the-scenes stories from the stars. Before Ryan Reynolds starred in Superhero films, he was one of the most popular actors to snag a leading role in a romantic comedy. One of his fan-favorite roles came from the 2005 rom-com Just Friends. During an interview, Reynolds revealed that one of the few times he feared he'd end up in jail was actually while filming the movie in Regina, Saskatchewan. He and the art department pulled a prank, and well, they got in trouble.
When he told the story, the Deadpool actor was a guest on the latest Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast episode. "It's one of my few times that I've ever been scared of going to jail, because we, just as a joke, me and the art department, we made a sign that would go over, it...

The jury is in. Kathy Bates is guilty of killing it in Matlock, CBS’s freshman legal drama, which is already renewed for Season 2. As a septuagenarian lawyer, Bates’ Madeline “Matty” Matlock went undercover at a fancy law firm to find out which attorney hid documents that would have prevented the sale of addictive opioids that led to her adult daughter’s deadly overdose. As Matty said in the premiere, “When women age, we become damn near invisible.” The upcoming April 17 two-hour finale, which Bates calls her favorite episode of the season, solves the mystery (after some very intriguing twists) but opens new questions. The changed Matty, who created her persona based on her daffy sister Bitsy (Julie Hagerty) and the classic Matlock TV series’ folksy Southern lawyer (Andy Griffith), must figure out what she will do next after discovering she’s a fine mentor and a pistol in the courtroom.

The What About Bob? production crew was deep in the woods of the tiny Virginia town of Moneta when they heard a frightening sound they couldn’t quite identify. They were over three months into shooting the 1991 Bill Murray-Richard Dreyfuss comedy about a mentally ill man who becomes obsessed with his tightly-wound therapist — way past the scheduled completion date — and things had been extremely tense from the beginning. But nothing prepared them for this.

The cast and crew of Matlock were spilling secrets when they reunited for PaleyFest at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on March 23. Lucky fans were treated to an early screening of Episode 16 ("The Johnson Case"), which won't air until April 3 on CBS — and the gobsmacked audience was warned to keep their lips "Mat-locked" about the latest twist.

Matlock is taking another break for a few weeks but will be back for the last episodes of its first season!
Matlock has been one of the bigger surprise hits for CBS. The promos pushed the idea of Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Oscar winner Kathy Bates) joining the law firm of Jacobson & Moore for a new start in life and using her age and wits to succeed.
The pilot ended with a fantastic twist that put the series in a new direction. Matty is actually a rich woman living with her husband and young grandson in a fancy manor. Her daughter died of an opioid overdose, and Matty suspects someone at the Jacobson & Moore law firm buried documents that could have gotten those drugs off the street. Thus, Matty is really going undercover to find out who did it and expose them.
The series has been a huge hit, earning a fast second-season renewal.
Matlock has been one of the bigger surprise hits for CBS. The promos pushed the idea of Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Oscar winner Kathy Bates) joining the law firm of Jacobson & Moore for a new start in life and using her age and wits to succeed.

Things are definitely coming down to the wire with Matlock’s newest discovery and subsequent conclusion. We’ll get to that in a minute because it’s just too juicy not to go into great detail.
Right now, we have to give it up to Matty and Bitsy’s friend, Cindy Shapiro. Who here thought she was definitely a made-up character? Those Cindy quotes are going to hit differently now.
Usually, Matlock is great at balancing drama against an adequate amount of humor, but those days might be taking a beat. Things are looking heavy for the foreseeable future.
(Michael Yarish/CBS)
That said, it was so good to see Julie Hagerty did not disappoint in the slightest. She was so perfect in this episode that I have to believe she and Kathy Bates are friends in real life with their instant chemistry.
Even Though Matty’s Mission Is Justified,...

Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman will forever remain a benchmark for superhero films. His iconic ability to balance Clark Kent's quiet demeanor with larger-than-life heroism set a new standard for the genre, earning his outings' place among the best Superman movies. Reeve's performances resonate harder decades later, showcasing a deep depth and charisma that has permeated for years and will continue to endure for years to come. It's no surprise every good Superman movie stars Reeve as his forever-lasting legacy in cinema ultimately defined what it means to be a hero.
While he is synonymous with Superman, Reeve's talent extends far beyond the cape. Some of the best Christopher Reeve roles don't even depict him as Superman, although plenty of them do involve him in a cape. This versatility defines the actor's legacy, with Reeve's ability to connect with audiences existing as a testament to his sincerity and depth.

Jim Abrahams, one of the creative minds behind such comedies as Airplane!, three Naked Gun movies, and the TV series Police Squad!, died November 26, 2024, at his Santa Monica, California home, Deadline reports. He was 80 years old.
Abrahams was born May 10, 1944, in Shorewood, Wi. He grew up with the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and the trio often referred to as "Zaz" got their start in Hollywood with The Kentucky Fried Movie. Written by Zaz and directed by John Landis, the film consists of a series of crude, sometimes offensive vignettes something which, by modern standards, could never be made today. Abrahams and the Zucker brothers appeared in the movie alongside James Bond actor George Lazenby, Donald Sutherland, and The Incredible Hulk star Bill Bixby, among others.

Abrahams has long been known for his work on several popular slapstick comedy movies. They followed this up by co-writing and co-directing Airplane!, the 1980 spoof of disaster movies starring Leslie Nielsen, Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, and Robert Stack.

Jim Abrahams, part of the writing-directing-producing team behind such comedy touchstones as Airplane!, the Naked Gun films, and Police Squad!, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 80.
His son, Joseph Abrahams, confirmed the news to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter.
Along with brothers David and Jerry Zucker, Abrahams also was behind laugh-inducing — and often intentionally groan-inducing — comedy films including Top Secret! and the Top Gun spoofs Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux. Students of the Mel Brooks School of Anything for a Laugh, the trio paired absurd situations with deadpan lines and fueled Leslie Nielsen’s unlikely rise to leading man after 30 years in the business.
The trio got their big-screen start writing The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), a series of decidedly un-pc vignettes directed by John Landis that ranged from silly to uproarious to “what the hell?!” and back. Sample: A TV news anchor deadpans from...

Bill Murray shines in both comedic and emotional performances, offering a unique blend of humor and depth in his roles. Murray's collaborations with directors like Wes Anderson and Ivan Reitman have resulted in memorable and iconic performances. Murray often does his best work in supporting roles, like in Tootsie and Ed Wood.
In a career reaching back to the 1970s, Bill Murray has made plenty of great movies which have bolstered his credentials as one of the best comedic performers of his generation. Murray first shot to fame as an early cast member on Saturday Night Live. His starring role in the 1979 comedy Meatballs made him an even bigger star, and he went on to act in several brilliant comedies throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
As Murray has matured as an actor, he has delivered some performances that blend his deadpan comedy with raw emotionality. His best movies aren't just hilarious.

When 1980’s Airplane! proved to be a massive hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year – up there with The Empire Strikes Back and Best Picture winner Kramer vs. Kramer – it was inevitable that it would get a sequel. But how often are comedy sequels good anyway? When have they ever really recaptured the magic and the laughter of the original? Well, Airplane II: The Sequel gave it a go…by basically being the same movie. Except this time around, Zaz wisely opted out, leaving the production without the strong leaders who reinvented the spoof genre. Instead, they got the guy who wrote Grease 2, one of the most notoriously awful sequels ever! So, strap in – no, not to an airplane but a space shuttle – as we find out: Wtf Happened to This Movie?!…The Sequel!

A Christmas Story Christmas recast the character of Mother Parker, played by the late Melinda Dillon in the original, with Julie Hagerty. Melinda Dillon retired from acting in 2007 and was unable to reprise her role in the sequel. Julie Hagerty, known for her roles in Airplane! and Marriage Story, did a good job in the sequel but her performance was not as memorable as Dillon's in the original.
HBO Max’s A Christmas Story Christmas saw many familiar faces return to Cleveland Street, but surprisingly, the movie recast Ralphie Parker’s mom. From yellow-eyed bully to blue-clad police officer, Scut Farkus made one miraculous turnaround since we were first introduced to him in 1983’s A Christmas Story. Now, the actor who portrayed him, Zack Ward, is spreading Christmas (Story) cheer by commemorating the film’s 40th anniversary.

David Letterman auditioned for the lead role in Airplane!, but crashed and burned, admitting he couldn't act. The role of Ted Striker was eventually won by Robert Hays, who portrayed the character with perfection. The upcoming book, Surely You Can't Be Serious: The True History of Airplane!, reveals more behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the film.
Is there anything more bizarre in Airplane! than seeing Los Angeles Lakers’ basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the aircraft’s co-pilot? Well, if David Letterman’s agent had gotten his way, the late-night talk show host would have been the one to save the day in the classic comedy, not actor Robert Hays. Yes, Letterman audition for the lead role of Ted Striker, but he crashed and burned during his tryout for the part. The reading is recounted in the upcoming book, Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The True History of Airplane!

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...

Plot: Owen Browning is a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker. When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws who just arrived in town, are the infamous Out-Laws.
Review: There are few winners in this late phase of the Streaming Wars as accomplished as Adam Sandler. The former SNL funnyman went from box office superstar to a lucrative contract with Netflix, resulting in dozens of mediocre movies and very few good ones. Even when not starring in the films, Happy Madison Productions has released films of a similar ilk which are funny enough for ambient viewing but not nearly good enough for the big screen. The latest Happy Madison movie, The Out-Laws, starring Adam Devine as an average guy whose future in-laws are notorious bank robbers played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin.

The Out-Laws is a Happy Madison Production movie. While Adam Sandler is not present onscreen, his spirit looms large. The jokes are funny, but not wholly original or unexpected. The physical comedy is juvenile, but Adam DeVine’s commitment makes up for the cringe-worthy moments. Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin deserve so much more and have so much more to give, but the script — by Evan Turner and Ben Zazove — doesn’t give them anything to utilize their skills and star power properly. The Out-Laws is predictable and at times lazy. But as lazy as it may be, there is a decent comedic backbone that carries it to its inevitable end. Going in with low expectations is probably best because you will come out of it not feeling like you wasted 95 minutes of your day.

‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. Compared to their yoga-teaching daughter, Parker (Nina Dobrev), and her fiancé,...

Tyler Spindel’s The Out-Laws is exactly the kind of film that streaming services have promised to showcase for years but have rarely delivered. Written by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, it’s the sort of breezily pleasurable, mid-budget, and intimately scaled movie that used to be a staple of the video stores that streaming helped to kill.
Tightly wound bank manager Owen (Adam DeVine), on the eve of his nuptials to Parker (Nina Dobrev), finally meets her parents, Billy (Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin), only for his excitement to quickly turn sour when his bank is robbed by bandits whom he strongly suspects are his future in-laws. Before Owen can confirm his suspicions, though, Billy and Lilly get their cover blown by a rival thief (Poorna Jagannathan), who takes Parker hostage to extort her parents, forcing them (and Owen) to commit further robberies to pay her ransom.
