12 Best LGBTQ+ Shows To Watch During Pride Month
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the last couple of decades, LGBTQ+ characters have become more and more common on television, though this history goes further back than you might think. As Shayna Maci Warner writes in "The Rainbow Age of Television," The first "expressly named gay character" appeared on the first episode of "N.Y.P.D." in 1967. Meanwhile, the first lesbian couple appeared on "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors" in 1972, though the first lesbian kiss on TV didn't occur until 1991 in an episode of "L.A. Law."

Queer representation has increased greatly since then, though GLAAD's 2023-2024 Where We Are On TV report indicates that there has been a decrease in LGBTQ+ characters in the last few years. Thankfully, many queer-centric shows from years past are available to stream (apart from the ones that have been pulled from streaming), meaning we still have a significant...

‘L Word’ Stars Kate Moennig, Leisha Hailey Recount Pay Battles on ‘Generation Q’ Sequel
Image
Two stars of Showtime’s groundbreaking series The L Word are sharing the struggles they encountered with securing equal pay in the show’s sequel.

Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig talked about their pay battle on the podcast Cool Cool Cool, hosted by Liz Culley. When they joined The L Word: Generation Q, Showtime’s 2019 follow-up to The L Word (which ended in 2009), they initially agreed to deals that were worth less than what they thought they deserved — Hailey in particular. The long-time friends teamed up to renegotiate better terms for Generation Q’s second season.

The two also recount the pay battle in their forthcoming book So Gay for You: Friendship, Found Family and the Show That Started It All. The memoir from St. Martin’s Press, which tracks how Hailey and Moennig’s time on The L Word sparked a long-lasting friendship and eventually a business partnership, is set for a June 3 release.

Screambox Hidden Gems: 5 Movies to Stream Including ‘King of the Ants’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

King of the Ants

While Stuart Gordon cemented himself as a master of horror with early works like Re-Animator and From Beyond, his later output is also worthy of exploration. 2003’s King of the Ants kicked off a trio of intense thrillers (alongside Edmond and Stuck) that would end up being Gordon’s final features. It was also one of the first productions from The Asylum, who would go on to create Sharknado, Z Nation, and Black Summer.

Based on the 1992 novel by Charlie Higson, who also wrote the screenplay, the film’s unusual structure makes it unpredictable. Struggling to make ends meet,...

The L Word: New York Season 1 Is Confirmed — Everything We Know
Image
The L Word: New York Season 1 is confirmed for a reboot in 2023, following the groundbreaking original series about LGBTQ+ women. Leisha Hailey may return as fan-favorite Alice, but no official cast announcements have been made. The story for The L Word: New York Season 1 is a reboot set in NYC, possibly following plotlines from the original series.

The L Word: New York season 1 will serve as a reboot of the original 2004 Showtime drama series, but news has been slow to arrive since its announcement in 2023. The L Word is a classic of LGBTQ+ TV show that follows the lives of a group of lesbian and bisexual women in West Hollywood. The series was groundbreaking for being the first series with an ensemble of women characters who primarily identify as lesbian and bisexual and featured queer sexuality from the point of view of LGBTQ+ women, which had rarely been done in TV or movies.

Kesha Joins Reneé Rapp At Coachella & Changes ‘Tik Tok’ Lyric To ‘F*** P. Diddy’
Image
Reneé Rapp debuted at Coachella on Sunday afternoon and was joined by Kesha on the stage.

Kesha performed her song “Tik Tok” and made a slight change to the lyrics.

Instead of singing, “Wake up in the morning feelin’ like P. Diddy,” Kesha and Rapp sang, “Wake up in the morning like F*** P. Diddy.”

The change in the lyric comes as Sean Combs faces sexual assault allegations and is accused of sex trafficking.

Rapp took the stage at the Outdoor Theatre at the Music and Arts festival, where she had kind words to say about Kesha.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this, I think, is the hottest person on the earth. Everybody put your fucking hands together for Kesha,” Rapp said, introducing her colleague.

Rapp is a fan of The L Word, and the cast, including Katherine Moennig, Leisha Hailey, Jennifer Beals, and Ilene Chaiken, were at the event to help...

Renee Rapp Brings Out 'The L Word' Cast & Kesha for Coachella 2024 Set, Changes Diddy Lyrics In 'Tik Tok'
Image
Renee Rapp brought some surprise guests for her first 2024 Coachella Music and Arts Festival set on Sunday (April 14) in Indio, Calif.

The 24-year-old singer and actress’ weekend one set was introduced by the original stars of The L Word – Leisha Hailey, Katherine Moennig and Jennifer Beals – as well as co-creator Ilene Chaiken.

Also during her Coachella debut, Renee brought out special guest Kesha, who joined her to perform “Tik Tok.”

In the song, the ladies changed the opening lyrics from, “Wake up in the mornin’ feelin’ like P Diddy,” to “Wake up in the morning’ like f–k P Diddy,” as they held up their middle fingers in the air.

Earlier in the day, Renee and Kesha both teased their surprise collab.

“but we kick em to the curb unless they look like a 5’10 lesbian,” Renee wrote on X/Twitter.

“Boys, they come, and they go. Hot babes last forever,...

‘The L Word’ Pilot Turns 20 — Amid the Worst LGBTQ Backslide in Television History
Image
On January 18, 2004, Showtime made history with “The L Word”: a spaghetti-strapped melodrama about twiggy lesbians living against a golden-filtered backdrop of mid-aughts Los Angeles.

The stroke of entertainment genius from creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken premiered that Sunday night in two parts, introducing a revolutionary cast of LGBTQ characters who would change the face and ritual of lesbian pop culture forever. From the moment Jenny (Mia Kirshner) laid eyes on Marina (Karina Lombard)…even before Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) tried to steal that dude’s sperm…or Shane (Katherine Moennig) showed up wearing that leather vest….countless TV-loving shes, theys, and gays saw themselves reflected in a fizzy fictional universe that was finally, mercifully grounded in a semi-authentic lesbian reality.

Fast forward to 2019; the reboot happened. Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” served as both a revamp of the initial concept with new characters and...

Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin launch new comedy podcast, Handsome, with ad sales by Gumball
Tig Notaro
Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin are excited to announce the launch of their new podcast, Handsome, on August 22, 2023.

Handsome is a comedy and storytelling podcast where the three comedians laugh their way through a candid, far-reaching and uproarious conversation, fielding a question each week from a friend, including Kenan Thompson, Atsuko Okatsuka, Neil Patrick Harris, Leisha Hailey, Lil Rel Howery, Jimmy Fallon, and many more.

Topics on Handsome range from childhood memories to philosophical musings, to creative inspiration and even (thanks to Sarah Silverman) private-part hygiene. Along the way, the three hosts approach every conversation with the warmth, hilarity, and insight that they’ve all been celebrated for as acclaimed individual stand-up comedians, actors, writers, and creators. Each of their singular comedic voices is spotlighted on the show, but together, their podcasting presence can only be described as ‘Handsome.’

“A little while back, the three of us decided to get together,...

"The L Word" Cast Speak at the White House For LGBTQ+ Rights During Lesbian Visibility Week
Image
In honor of honor Lesbian Visibility Week, the cast of "The L Word" headed to the White House on April 25 to speak to the press about issues affecting LGBTQ+ people. Stars Leisha Hailey, Jennifer Beals, and Kate Moennig - who play Alice, Bette, and Shane, respectively on the original series and the three-season reboot "The L Word: Generation Q" - were joined by original series creator Ilene Chaiken and the White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The White House tweeted a stream of their appearance, and Chaiken and Hailey, who are both lesbians, urged queer people and their allies to speak up and continue to fight in the current political climate.

Ilene Chaiken And ‘The L Word’ Cast Appear At White House Press Briefing
Image
Ilene Chaiken and cast members of The L Word: Generation Q appeared at the White House daily briefing on Tuesday to speak out on attacks on the Lgbtqi community.

They were at the White House to mark Lesbian Visibility Week.

“We’re delighted that The L Word lives on and speaks to a new generation,” Chaiken told reporters. “But we’re painfully aware that our struggles are far from over. We face new threats against our community, from online harassment to legislative acts of violence to actual physical violence. Astonishing, backward, mean-spirited attacks by groups and individuals who, in trying to deny our humanity, only diminish their own.”

Chaiken is co-creator, writer and executive producer of The L Word. She and the cast members were the latest showbiz figures to get the briefing room platform, following others including the cast of Ted Lasso, Cyndi Lauper and Matthew McConaughey.

‘The L Word: Generation Q’ Removed From Showtime Platforms Following Cancellation
Image
Exclusive: The L Word: Generation Q is no longer available on Showtime’s streaming service and the Showtime Anytime app. The removal comes on the heels of the series’ cancellation by the network after three seasons.

While the sequel has been removed, the groundbreaking original L Word series remains on the service. As Deadline reported exclusively last week, a reboot, The L Word: New York (working title), is in development at Showtime with the 2004 series’ creator Ilene Chaiken attached.

The removal of The L Word: Generation Q also follows the purge of a number of short-lived Showtime series from the streaming platform at the end of January as part of Showtime’s integration into Paramount+, which includes the linear network being renamed Paramount+ with Showtime later this year. As part of the changes, the company will “divert investment away from areas that are underperforming” and that accounts for “less than 10% of our views,...

The L Word: Generation Q (2019)
The L Word: Generation Q Canceled at Showtime, but There’s a Catch
The L Word: Generation Q (2019)
Showtime is closing the book on The L Word: Generation Q.

According to Deadline, the series has been canceled after three seasons on the premium cabler.

The news comes two months after The L Word: Generation Q Season 3, which means fans could be left pondering what happened next.

While Generation Q is done, L Word creator Ilene Chaiken is prepping a reboot of the original series for Showtime.

The potential series would be called The L Word: New York and would shift the action to -- you guessed it -- New York.

Generation Q was a continuation of the original series which aired on Showtime from 2004 to 2009.

It followed the lives of Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals), Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), Shane McCutcheon (Moennig), Dani Nùñez (Arienne Mandi), Micah Lee (Leo Sheng), Sarah Finley (Jacqueline Toboni), Sophie Suarez (Rosanny Zayas), Gigi Ghorbani (Sepideh Moafi), Angie Porter-Kennard (Jordan Hull) and Tess Van...

‘The L Word’: Generation Q’ Canceled After 3 Seasons, New York-Set Reboot Of Original With Ilene Chaiken In Works At Showtime
Image
Exclusive: Showtime has opted not to renew The L Word: Generation Q for a fourth season. However, the franchise may continue on the network — The L Word: New York (working title), a reboot of the groundbreaking original series, is in development with the 2004 series’ creator Ilene Chaiken expected to be involved in some capacity, I hear.

The L Word: Generation Q‘s cancellation comes two months after the series’ third season ended its run. No Showtime series has been renewed since the January announcement that the premium cable network will be integrated into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear later this year and renamed as Paramount+ with Showtime.

There had been a programming slate reevaluation since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his purview following the exit of longtime CEO David Nevins in October. Let the Right One In and American Gigolo were both canceled after one season. Showtime also opted...

Why The L Word's Bette and Tina Deserve a Happy Ending
Image
Editor's note: The below contains spoilers for Season 3 of The L Word: Generation Q.The L Word’s initial conceit was to explore queer relationships through an ensemble drama, an endeavor the show did significantly well both over its original six-season run and currently in the final Season 3 of its reboot. The original series followed the relationships and friendships of a small, tightly-knit group of gay women living in L.A. The present-day iteration, The L Word: Generation Q, began in 2019, with “Q” referencing a new, younger group of queer characters introduced to the show. Several characters from the first series have popped up over its three seasons, including long-time couple Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals) and Tina Kennard (Laurel Holloman) and their friends Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey) and Shane McCutcheon (Kate Moennig).
