It’s a copper-bottomed Hollywood high-concept pitch: what if the fate of America was riding on Ice Cube’s ability to cut and paste really fast? There’s a shit-ton of typing in Amazon’s re-do of H.G. Wells’ The War Of The Worlds, the alien invasion seen from the Pov of Cube’s domestic-terror analyst’s computer desktop. Depicting the attack via security cameras, phones, Facebook and CNN reports, the result is a Roland Emmerich-esque epic shot on 13% battery: a poorly played, clueless, witless affair that fumbles the one or two good ideas it has.

If Steven Spielberg’s 2005 War Of The Worlds tapped deeply into post-9/11 anxieties, this latest update feeds into all the fears of today — the invasion of privacy, the dangers of data farming, the duplicity of governments, where Amazon will dump your package — but doesn’t have any idea about how to make them feel real or pertinent.

Ryan Murphy has another anthology after Netflix ordered two additional installments of his Monster franchise following the success of Dahmer.

The streamer has also ordered a second season of his drama series The Watcher.

Neither move is a surprise given the ratings success of both shows, particularly the outsized ratings of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is on course to reach 1B hours viewed in the coming weeks.

Both Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher come from American Horror Story co-creator Murphy and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Netflix didn’t disclose what the two additional installments of the Monster anthology franchise will cover but said that they will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society”.

Netflix's true crime thriller The Watcher reinforces the platform a dominant force in streaming TV. One of the things that makes the new series so special is its star-studded cast, an ensemble whose members each boast highly recognizable bodies of work.

With careers that run the gamut from Hollywood classics such as Rosemary's Baby all the way to the pinnacle of sci-fi TV in Doctor Who, the actors of The Watcher are truly all stars. Though each member of the cast has a wealth of work, some of their projects help to make them instantly recognizable.

Muscling his way into a cast like The Watcher's wasn't easy, but young Henry Hunter Hall has already proven himself to be a skilled dramatic performer. In the miniseries, he plays Ellie's romantic love interest Dakota, and though he isn't given too much to do, he still managed to turn heads.

His real-estate thriller The Watcher is the most-watched series on Netflix for the second week in a row, with 148.2M hours viewed. That’s in addition to the 125M hours it racked up in its first week on the streamer, totaling 273.2M hours viewed since release.

In its second week, The Watcher made it to the top of the charts in 65 countries — compared to 90 countries in the first week of release.

After launching on October 13, The Watcher dethroned Murphy’s other new series, the Evan Peters-led Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, from the top of the Netflix Top 10 chart. The serial killer series had spent 21 days in first place, helping it to become Netflix’s second most-popular English-language series of all time.

Dahmer now remains in second place on the Netflix Top 10 list, with 69.11M additional hours viewed last week.

Deadline revealed on Friday that his latest series, real-estate thriller The Watcher, had dethroned his other show Dahmer at the top of Netflix’s daily chart.

This came after 21 consecutive days at the top for the serial killer thriller, helping it to become Netflix’s second most popular English-language series of all time.

The Watcher, which launched on October 13, has now been viewed for 125M hours in its first five days on the service.

Dahmer, for instance, racked up 196.2M hours in its first five days.

The Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale-fronted series made it into the top 10 in 90 countries.

The seven-part series is actually Murphy’s third title in the charts this week with Mr. Harrigan’s Phone staying in the feature film list with 20M hours viewed.

Journalist Reeves Wiedeman unfurled a years-long saga of the real-life Broaddus family who paid a bit too much to fulfill their American dream of escaping the city and moving into an idyllic New Jersey suburb, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare: Almost immediately after settling in, they begin receiving sinister letters threatening them and their children. The situation spins out of control, sending the family into paranoia (both justified and not) that pits neighbor against neighbor.

It’s easy to see why six different studios were eager to snap up the screen rights to Wiedeman’s feature, but it feels as though Netflix was trying to burn off this premium piece of IP...

If one looks at the Ryan Murphy/Netflix collaborations in total, you’d be safe saying the pair haven’t crafted a match made in heaven (massive viewing numbers for “Dahmer” notwithstanding). Which is a shame, as “The Watcher” is probably the best series Murphy’s worked on for the streaming giant. What makes “The Watcher” soar is Murphy going back to what worked for him with the first “American Horror Story”: a haunted house film with a cadre of characters you simultaneously liked yet were irritated by. But at the end of the day it’s still a Murphy show, meaning that for every good thing, like Jennifer Coolidge’s real-estate agent from hell, there’s an element that makes you roll your eyes and sigh in exasperation, like pigtail wearing becoming a major plot point.

Hot off the success of his Jeffrey Dahmer series Dahmer, Ryan Murphy is back with another Netflix show inspired by a true story. This time, though, there’s a bit of a twist. The Watcher, inspired by the true story of the Broaddus family who bought a very expensive house in Westfield, New Jersey and received a series of threatening letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher”, takes a slightly different approach to true crime. It’s a weird story. And it’s never been solved, though there are many theories kicking around. The show’s approach is to allow various theories to play out, leaving you with a story that, at first glance, seems quite outlandish but with a bit of further digging is often peripherally true, could have been true, or was inspired by something that really happened.

The American Horror Story creator, whose FX anthology was centered around a haunted home, has dropped a trailer for his next Netflix series, The Watcher, which is about a home, and a family, that is being stalked to sinister degree. The series releases Oct. 13.

The limited series, which notes that it’s based on the shocking true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey, stars Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, a married couple who move their family into a new suburban home. The trailer, however, shows that everyone around them, particularly the anonymous “watcher” of their home, knows they have bought more than they bargained for.

The trailer shows poor Rosaline is upset that her boyfriend is using the same lovely words to woo Juliet that he used on her just three days prior. Promoting a TV show when there are countless offerings out there is tough.

Netflix is taking a different approach for Ryan Murphy's limited series The Watcher, which is on track for a fall launch.

The streaming service released a clip of Jennifer Coolidge in character as realtor Karen Calhoun.

The intent?

To sell the house that serves as the setting for the show.

It's a decent method of promotion.

Coolidge has had some iconic roles throughout her career, and we're sure Karen will be another quote-worthy addition to her resume.

"Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) just purchased their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after putting all of their savings into closing the deal, they soon realize the neighborhood is less than welcoming," the logline teases.

The trailer for Netflix’s The Watcher limited series plays like a walk-through of a house for sale, with Jennifer Coolidge starring as the realtor who guides interested buyers through their potential new digs. The limited series is based on the true story of a family who purchased 657 Boulevard, Westfield, New Jersey and were immediately targeted with creepy letters signed by “The Watcher.”

Netflix’s campaign for the series includes an actual listing of the residence on Zillow. The listing is by Karen Calhoun (Coolidge) and features photos, a detailed description of the home, and the series’ walk-through trailer.

Netflix has unveiled an unconventional teaser for Ryan Murphy’s upcoming limited series The Watcher. It’s also the streamer’s first official confirmation of the series.

The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge hosts a three-minute “open house” video as realtor Karen Calhoun.

“Hi, I’m Karen Calhoun from Darren Dunn Realty,” says Coolidge at the opening of the teaser. “This is 657 Boulevard,” she continues, “and this is my listing.”

“Are you ready?, your dream home awaits,” she adds.

The teaser could pass for a legit open house tour, except for a couple of things that are a bit telling — such as when Karen suggests you could fit an entire body in the home’s dumbwaiter, and when she fears opening the bedroom curtains because of “weird neighbors” who might be peering in.

Jennifer Coolidge is a woman of many talents, including, apparently, selling homes. Netflix introduced us to her latest character, real estate agent Karen Calhoun, in a clip Friday promoting Ryan Murphy’s new series, “The Watcher.”

In the video, Coolidge shows off 657 Boulevard, the infamous New York house from the new limited series. “The Watcher” is based on a story written for New York Magazine and follows a family who were ultimately threatened to leave their newly bought mansion after a mysterious stalker began sending them letters in the mail.

Coolidge gives a tour of the property in painstaking detail, as any luxury real estate agent would, highlighting the best features in the house — including the fifth bathroom, which was thrown in “just for fun.”

The streamer acquired worldwide rights to the film, which was written and directed by Poe, and will distribute “Selah and The Spades” directly to its streaming platform. Amazon also plans to develop an original series based on the teen drama set in a boarding school. Poe will also write, direct and produce the series.

Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to “Selah and the Spades,” a gripping look at a prep school drug dealer, Variety has learned.

The film marks the feature debut of writer and director Tayarisha Poe and had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it was a favorite with critics. Get Out director Jordan Peele is emerging from the sunken place to hunt for Nazis. Peele will executive produce The Hunt. The “vengeance-driven Nazi hunting series” was recently greenlit by Amazon Studios, which put in an direct-to-series order for 10 episodes. The Hunt was created by David Weil (Moonfall) who will also write the series and be an Executive Producer.

"When David Weil first shared The Hunt with me, I immediately knew that we had to be involved. Its cathartic,” Peele said in a statement. “Its noir. It’s frighteningly relevant.
