War Of The Worlds (2025)
Image
It’s a copper-bottomed Hollywood high-concept pitch: what if the fate of America was riding on Ice Cube’s ability to cut and paste really fast? There’s a shit-ton of typing in Amazon’s re-do of H.G. Wells’ The War Of The Worlds, the alien invasion seen from the Pov of Cube’s domestic-terror analyst’s computer desktop. Depicting the attack via security cameras, phones, Facebook and CNN reports, the result is a Roland Emmerich-esque epic shot on 13% battery: a poorly played, clueless, witless affair that fumbles the one or two good ideas it has.

If Steven Spielberg’s 2005 War Of The Worlds tapped deeply into post-9/11 anxieties, this latest update feeds into all the fears of today — the invasion of privacy, the dangers of data farming, the duplicity of governments, where Amazon will dump your package — but doesn’t have any idea about how to make them feel real or pertinent.

If you have even a passing interest in the sci-fi genre, chances are you’ve heard of H.G. Wells’ iconic 1898 novel The War of the Worlds, or perhaps seen one of its screen adaptations. Recently, streaming giant Amazon Prime Video released a new adaptation of the beloved sci-fi tale on its platform.

Titled War of the Worlds, the film stars rapper-actor Ice Cube and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria. It premiered on July 30, 2025, on Prime Video. However, despite the star power, the film has received a shockingly low critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Read on to find out what this version is all about, and how it’s been received by critics and audiences.

War Of The Worlds Debuts With a 0% Score And a Tagline That Accidentally Told the Truth
Image
Think about the worst movie you have ever watched. Well, according to critics, even the worst film won’t come close to Universal Pictures’ latest War of the Worlds. Starring Ice Cube in the lead role, the film has achieved a rare feat of debuting with a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes against 12 critic reviews.

The film is so bad that not one of the 12 critics deemed it worthy of any stars, which is ironic given the film’s tagline. The film’s official tagline is ‘It’s worse than you think,’ which perfectly describes the film while also foreshadowing its content. However, it feels less like a marketing strategy and more like an accidental warning label slapped across a project that fell off the rails before the aliens even landed. Even that hasn’t stopped fans from hate-streaming, making it one of the most streamed titles of recent times on...

‘War of the Worlds (2025)’ Review
Image
Stars: Ice Cube, Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Iman Benson, Henry Hunter Hall, Devon Bostick, Andrea Savage, Michael O’Neill, Jim Meskimen | Written by Kenny Golde, Marc Hyman | Directed by Rich Lee

The latest adaptation of War of the Worlds, directed by Rich Lee and starring Ice Cube, attempts to reboot H.G. Wells’ classic alien invasion tale for the Zoom-era world of 2025. Produced by Universal, this version leans heavily into the found-footage aesthetic and pandemic-era storytelling devices, delivering a fast-paced but flawed digital-age take on a sci-fi staple.

Set in a near-future where global surveillance, data streams, and cyber infrastructure rule modern life, the film pivots the traditional Martian invasion to a world already under the microscope. Ice Cube plays a U.S. government security analyst monitoring worldwide threats via data feeds and surveillance systems. Alongside him are his improbably qualified children, a scientist daughter and a hacker son, who become...

‘War of the Worlds’ Review: Ice Cube Headlines a Disastrous Movie Retelling of H.G. Wells’ Alien-Invasion Classic
Image
In 1938, Orson Welles hosted a radio version of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” that reportedly sent listeners into a panic by treating the alien invasion as a breaking news broadcast. Skip forward to today, and a witless, straight-to-streaming adaptation of Wells’ novel seems highly unlikely to alarm anybody, confining the global takeover by aggressive extraterrestrial tripods to one man’s desktop as it does.

“War of the Worlds” marks the latest — and least convincing — screenlife thriller from “Searching” producer Timur Bekmambetov (this one clumsily orchestrated by VFX pro and frequent Eminem music video director Rich Lee). The project might be scarier if the company that’s releasing it, Amazon, hadn’t already achieved world domination. Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon.

Ice Cube plays Will Radford,...

Found Footage Screenlife Version of 'War of the Worlds' with Ice Cube
Image
"Data is their food. You are the harvest." Welcome to Earth 2.0! Prime Video has unveiled the full trailer for a new screenlife found footage version of War of the Worlds, directed by Rich Lee. In this new take - Ice Cube fights aliens to save his family and the world. An experiment in adapting this sci-fi classic story of alien ships hidden underneath the earth, this time commenting on surveillance and data, using only footage of screen videos to show what it would be like for someone watching from afar. An interesting concept, but it just looks like a gigantic, boring digital mess. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov, one of the few remaining "screenlife cinema" supporters, this new version will be steaming on Prime Video next week. A grounded sci-fi film in the vein of District 9, that touches on themes of privacy versus surveillance. Starring Ice Cube along with Eva Longoria,...

War of the Worlds trailer: Ice Cube and Eva Longoria star in Prime Video reimagining of the H.G. Wells story
The War of the Worlds (1953)
There have been a lot of film and TV adaptations of H.G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds over the decades. So why not gear up for another telling of the story? A trailer has just dropped online for the latest War of the Worlds movie, which will be released through the Prime Video streaming service on July 30th, and you can check it out in the embed above.

This Sci-Fi Masterpiece Is Once Again Getting a Film Adaptation 20 Years After Tom Cruise Starred in One
Image
H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds is getting a screenlife makeover — and Ice Cube is at the center of it. Premiering globally on Prime Video July 30, the new modern-day reboot of the sci-fi classic comes from producers Patrick Aiello and Timur Bekmambetov, with a twist that’s very 2025: the story unfolds through the digital devices we use every day. Think alien invasion meets mass surveillance, told through smartphones, laptops, and security feeds — a visual language designed to feel disturbingly real. You mean we can't even trust TikTok? Since when?!

Directed by Rich Lee, this War of the Worlds follows Will Radford (Ice Cube), a Homeland Security cyber-security analyst who monitors threats via a vast surveillance network. But when an attack by an unknown entity hits, Will is forced to question everything he knows — including what the government might be hiding from him… and the rest of the world.

Netflix Expands Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ Franchise With Two More Installments Following ‘Dahmer’ Success & Renews ‘The Watcher’ For Season 2
Image
Ryan Murphy has another anthology after Netflix ordered two additional installments of his Monster franchise following the success of Dahmer.

The streamer has also ordered a second season of his drama series The Watcher.

Neither move is a surprise given the ratings success of both shows, particularly the outsized ratings of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is on course to reach 1B hours viewed in the coming weeks.

Both Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher come from American Horror Story co-creator Murphy and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Netflix didn’t disclose what the two additional installments of the Monster anthology franchise will cover but said that they will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society”.

Murphy is behind an incredible number of franchises including American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, American Crime Story, American Love Story, Feud and 9-1-1.

The Watcher: 10 Movies And TV Shows Where You've Seen The Cast
Image
Netflix's true crime thriller The Watcher reinforces the platform a dominant force in streaming TV. One of the things that makes the new series so special is its star-studded cast, an ensemble whose members each boast highly recognizable bodies of work.

With careers that run the gamut from Hollywood classics such as Rosemary's Baby all the way to the pinnacle of sci-fi TV in Doctor Who, the actors of The Watcher are truly all stars. Though each member of the cast has a wealth of work, some of their projects help to make them instantly recognizable.

Henry Hunter Hall - Harriet (2019)

Muscling his way into a cast like The Watcher's wasn't easy, but young Henry Hunter Hall has already proven himself to be a skilled dramatic performer. In the miniseries, he plays Ellie's romantic love interest Dakota, and though he isn't given too much to do, he still managed to turn heads.

Image
Ryan Murphy is continuing his reign over Netflix.

His real-estate thriller The Watcher is the most-watched series on Netflix for the second week in a row, with 148.2M hours viewed. That’s in addition to the 125M hours it racked up in its first week on the streamer, totaling 273.2M hours viewed since release.

For Kaitlyn Dever, ‘Rosaline’ Was Worth the 10-Year Wait: ‘It’s Not Something I’ve Really Done Before’
Image
Kaitlyn Dever may embody one of literature’s most overlooked characters in “Rosaline,” 20th Century Studios’ campy and modernized retelling of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” from the perspective of the forgotten Capulet, but the Emmy-nominated actress is anything but.

Earning her first executive producing credit on the Hulu film (based on Rebecca Serle’s book “When You Were Mine”), the “Dopesick” star continues her ascent in Tinseltown, setting her sights on directing next and gushing about being featured opposite rom-com greats Julia Roberts and George Clooney in “Ticket to Paradise,” which debuts next week, in a recent interview with TheWrap.

“When I approached Rosaline, the way I developed the character and the process behind bringing this character to life was just really pushing any boundaries that I had been afraid of before,” Dever told TheWrap, “because Rosaline has an intensity and her intensity is the drive throughout the story in the film,...

‘The Watcher’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s Next True Crime Netflix Series Is a Joyless Camp Fest
The Watcher (2022)
The 2018 New York Magazine feature “The Watcher” had all the makings of a taut, twisty and timely psychological thriller that triggered our universal neuroses about the illusions of privacy and safety in our own homes. Journalist Reeves Wiedeman unfurled a years-long saga of the real-life Broaddus family who paid a bit too much to fulfill their American dream of escaping the city and moving into an idyllic New Jersey suburb, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare: Almost immediately after settling in, they begin receiving sinister letters threatening them and their children. The situation spins out of control, sending the family into paranoia (both justified and not) that pits neighbor against neighbor.

It’s easy to see why six different studios were eager to snap up the screen rights to Wiedeman’s feature, but it feels as though Netflix was trying to burn off this premium piece of IP...

Confusing ‘The Watcher’ Sees Ryan Murphy Aim for ‘Twin Peaks’ Quirkiness in Muddled Mystery
Image
[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Watcher,” including the ending.]

If one looks at the Ryan Murphy/Netflix collaborations in total, you’d be safe saying the pair haven’t crafted a match made in heaven (massive viewing numbers for “Dahmer” notwithstanding). Which is a shame, as “The Watcher” is probably the best series Murphy’s worked on for the streaming giant. What makes “The Watcher” soar is Murphy going back to what worked for him with the first “American Horror Story”: a haunted house film with a cadre of characters you simultaneously liked yet were irritated by. But at the end of the day it’s still a Murphy show, meaning that for every good thing, like Jennifer Coolidge’s real-estate agent from hell, there’s an element that makes you roll your eyes and sigh in exasperation, like pigtail wearing becoming a major plot point.

Let’s back up: Dean and Nora...

The Watcher: What Happened in Real Life
The Watcher (2022)
This article contains spoilers for The Watcher.

Hot off the success of his Jeffrey Dahmer series Dahmer, Ryan Murphy is back with another Netflix show inspired by a true story. This time, though, there’s a bit of a twist. The Watcher, inspired by the true story of the Broaddus family who bought a very expensive house in Westfield, New Jersey and received a series of threatening letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher”, takes a slightly different approach to true crime. It’s a weird story. And it’s never been solved, though there are many theories kicking around. The show’s approach is to allow various theories to play out, leaving you with a story that, at first glance, seems quite outlandish but with a bit of further digging is often peripherally true, could have been true, or was inspired by something that really happened.

Let’s break it all down.

The Watcher TV Review
Image
Plot: After the Brannock family moves into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, it quickly becomes a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” are just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Inspired by the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey.

Review: Ryan Murphy’s Netflix megadeal has churned out some interesting projects over the years with a focus on adapting well-known true-crime and biographical stories. Most recently, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story became a massive hit for the streaming service despite the controversial approach to adapting the serial killer’s infamous story. Now, Murphy and longtime collaborator Ian Brennan are back with another adaptation of a true-crime story, this time one that is somewhat scarier than Monster but in a much different way. The Watcher, inspired by a New York Magazine article by Reeves Wiedeman,...

Naomi Watts and ‘Watcher’ Co-Stars on Why There’s a ‘Real Appetite’ for Ryan Murphy’s True-Crime Dramas
Image
The premiere of Ryan Murphy’s latest true crime Netflix series, “The Watcher,” comes on the heels of the huge success of his “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

“The Watcher” is a haunting limited series based on the real-life, unsolved mystery about a family being stalked in their home. “I think there’s a real appetite for it right now,” star Naomi Watts told Variety at the show’s New York premiere at the Paris Theater on Wednesday. “I’m trying to figure out what it is, but I can theorize. But these are really dark, chaotic things going on in the world right now. I think you want to understand why these things happen and who would you be and how would you cope.”

Murphy made a photos-only appearance on the carpet while his cast talked to the press. “You trust [Murphy] because he has done so much great work before,...

Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and ‘The Watcher’ Cast on Bringing Mysterious True Story to the Screen
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Just three weeks after Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dropped on Netflix and became a hit for the streamer, the duo have released their next true-crime take with The Watcher.

While the Jeffrey Dahmer limited series received backlash from the family members of the serial killer’s victims for their lack of involvement in the project, the cast of The Watcher said they’re not concerned with their limited series receiving the same criticism.

Based on a true story, the series follows married couple Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) after they purchase their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey. Soon after meeting their strange neighbors — portrayed by Mia Farrow, Terry Kinney, Richard Kind and Margo Martindale — the couple begin receiving sinister letters from someone named “the Watcher.” Through the letters, the stalker starts to terrorize Dean,...

The Watcher (2022)
The Watcher looks set to be one of the most chilling new shows of the fall.

Thursday, October 13 is the premiere date, meaning we don't have long to wait to binge the heck out of what is sure to be another shocking series.

"Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) just purchased their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after putting all of their savings into closing the deal, they soon realize the neighborhood is less than welcoming," the logline teases.

"There’s a kooky older woman named Pearl (Mia Farrow) and her brother Jasper (Terry Kinney), who sneaks into the Brannock’s house and hides in their dumbwaiter."

Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale Go Up Against a Stalker in Netflix’s ‘The Watcher’ Trailer (Video)
Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale are going up against an unknown assailant in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series “The Watcher.” (Watch it above.)

The series is based on a story written for New York Magazine and follows a family who were ultimately threatened and pressured into leaving their newly-bought mansion after a mysterious stalker began sending them letters in the mail.

“Your house is my obsession and now you are too,” an ominous voice says in the trailer, as chilling music plays in the background. “Who am I? It might not frighten you yet, but it will.”

As the trailer continues, the music gets more ominous and the characters become more frantic.

Cannavale’s character says he moved his family so that they could feel “safe,” but now they’re fearing for their lives. While they’re advised to get out as soon as they can, Watts...

Ryan Murphy has officially listed his next house — another one that comes with chilling baggage.

The American Horror Story creator, whose FX anthology was centered around a haunted home, has dropped a trailer for his next Netflix series, The Watcher, which is about a home, and a family, that is being stalked to sinister degree. The series releases Oct. 13.

The limited series, which notes that it’s based on the shocking true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey, stars Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, a married couple who move their family into a new suburban home. The trailer, however, shows that everyone around them, particularly the anonymous “watcher” of their home, knows they have bought more than they bargained for.

“Do you know the history of the house? I’ve been put in charge of watching you. This message will not be the last.

Kaitlyn Dever in 'Romeo & Juliet' Update Titled 'Rosaline' Main Trailer
Image
"I was trying to steal him back! There's a difference." Hulu has revealed the official trailer for a romantic comedy film titled Rosaline, a new twist on Shakespeare's classic Romeo & Juliet. This sounds fun and best of all - it's from the screenwriters of 500 Days of Summer and The Fault in Our Stars, and made by the director of Yes God Yes, all of which are outstanding films. Rosaline is a comedic retelling of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," told from the point of view of Romeo's jilted ex, Rosaline, the woman that Romeo first claims to love before he falls for Juliet. She gets jealous and "schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy." The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as Rosaline, along with Bradley Whitford, Minnie Driver, Christopher McDonald, Sean Teale, Henry Hunter Hall, and Nico Hiraga; plus Isabela Merced & Kyle Allen as Juliet & Romeo. This looks quite fun,...

‘Rosaline’ Trailer Approaches ‘Romeo & Juliet’ from a Different Perspective
Image
Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, but what about Romeo’s spurned lover, Rosaline? She’s been pushed to the side and forgotten about…until now. The new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Rosaline tells the story of Romeo and Juliet from Rosaline’s point of view.

The trailer shows poor Rosaline is upset that her boyfriend is using the same lovely words to woo Juliet that he used on her just three days prior. Rosaline’s the one who’s supposed to be Romeo’s great love and future wife, yet Romeo doesn’t seem to care one iota that he’s so easily replaced her with her very own cousin. Damn the man.

Emmy Award nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick) stars as the titular character and serves as an executive producer. The cast also includes Sean Teale (Little Voice) as Dario, Minnie Driver (Speechless) as The Nurse,...

The Watcher: Jennifer Coolidge Hosts Open House Tour to Promote New Netflix Drama
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
Promoting a TV show when there are countless offerings out there is tough.

Netflix is taking a different approach for Ryan Murphy's limited series The Watcher, which is on track for a fall launch.

The streaming service released a clip of Jennifer Coolidge in character as realtor Karen Calhoun.

The intent?

To sell the house that serves as the setting for the show.

It's a decent method of promotion.

Coolidge has had some iconic roles throughout her career, and we're sure Karen will be another quote-worthy addition to her resume.

‘The Watcher’ Limited Series Trailer: A Dream Home Turns Into a Nightmare
Image
The trailer for Netflix’s The Watcher limited series plays like a walk-through of a house for sale, with Jennifer Coolidge starring as the realtor who guides interested buyers through their potential new digs. The limited series is based on the true story of a family who purchased 657 Boulevard, Westfield, New Jersey and were immediately targeted with creepy letters signed by “The Watcher.”

Netflix’s campaign for the series includes an actual listing of the residence on Zillow. The listing is by Karen Calhoun (Coolidge) and features photos, a detailed description of the home, and the series’ walk-through trailer.

The limited series’ cast includes Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Mia Farrow, Margo Martindale, and Terry Kinney. Joe Mantello, Richard Kind, Noma Dumezweni, Christopher McDonald, Michael Nouri, Isabel Gravitt, Henry Hunter Hall, and Luke David Blumm also star.

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan created The Watcher and executive produce along with Alexis Martin Woodall,...

‘The Watcher’ Teaser: Jennifer Coolidge Can’t Wait To Sell You A Home In Ryan Murphy’s Limited Series
Image
Netflix has unveiled an unconventional teaser for Ryan Murphy’s upcoming limited series The Watcher. It’s also the streamer’s first official confirmation of the series.

The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge hosts a three-minute “open house” video as realtor Karen Calhoun.

“Hi, I’m Karen Calhoun from Darren Dunn Realty,” says Coolidge at the opening of the teaser. “This is 657 Boulevard,” she continues, “and this is my listing.”

“Are you ready?, your dream home awaits,” she adds.

The teaser could pass for a legit open house tour, except for a couple of things that are a bit telling — such as when Karen suggests you could fit an entire body in the home’s dumbwaiter, and when she fears opening the bedroom curtains because of “weird neighbors” who might be peering in.

Co-created by Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series, starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale,...

Jennifer Coolidge Is Selling a Fake Luxury Home in Promo for Netflix’s Series ‘The Watcher’ (Video)
Image
Jennifer Coolidge is a woman of many talents, including, apparently, selling homes. Netflix introduced us to her latest character, real estate agent Karen Calhoun, in a clip Friday promoting Ryan Murphy’s new series, “The Watcher.”

In the video, Coolidge shows off 657 Boulevard, the infamous New York house from the new limited series. “The Watcher” is based on a story written for New York Magazine and follows a family who were ultimately threatened to leave their newly bought mansion after a mysterious stalker began sending them letters in the mail.

Coolidge gives a tour of the property in painstaking detail, as any luxury real estate agent would, highlighting the best features in the house — including the fifth bathroom, which was thrown in “just for fun.”

“There is nothing like this in the world,” she says as she twirls through one of the rooms. And of course, she had to show off the fully intact dumbwaiter,...

Selah and the Spades Review: Tayarisha Poe’s Debut Explores the Burdens of Striving for Perfection
Jesse Williams
It’s senior year for the infamous teenage faction heads who rule Haldwell right under its custodians’ noses—the final two semesters to ready the successors they’ve handpicked to continue stewarding the longstanding legacy of extracurricular opportunities their tandem organizations have provided this east coast boarding school’s student body for decades. The passing of the batons proves even more crucial for this graduating class, though, because of the ever-present desire to stop their behind the scenes activities by a newly instated headmaster (Jesse Williams) uninterested in turning a blind eye their way. Everything must therefore be perfectly planned and executed whether their senior prank, their usual series of clandestine parties, or their unfettered supply chain of the best narcotics a private campus student’s parents’ money can buy.

While Bobby (Ana Mulvoy Ten), Tarit (Henry Hunter Hall), Amber B (Francesca Noel), and Two Tom (Evan Roe) are cautiously...

‘Hunters’ Review: A Queasy, Stylized Act of Catharsis with Mythological Stakes
Lena Olin, Carol Kane, Logan Lerman, Louis Ozawa, Jerrika Hinton, Kate Mulvany, and Tiffany Boone in Hunters (2020)
In the first episode of the 1977-set Hunters, Jonah Heidelbaum (Logan Lerman) and his curiously nicknamed friends Bootyhole and Cheeks (Caleb Emery and Henry Hunter Hall) walk out of a screening of Star Wars analyzing what they think of the film. Is a reading of the film as simple as "Darth Vader is Space Hitler leading Space Nazis?" Is George Lucas racist for coding his Space Hitler as a black man? Or are the sources and breeding grounds for hatred much more complicated, more intertwined with upbringings, more deserving of our empathy? Hunters, an Amazon Prime show about the …...

New ‘Hunters’ Trailer Offers Important Lesson: Never Go to an Undercover Nazi’s BBQ
Jordan Peele
The worst kind of backyard barbecue, it unsurprisingly turns out, is one hosted by an undercover Nazi, as evidenced by the new trailer for the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced Amazon series, Hunters.

The new clip — which is set to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday — centers around Biff Simpson (Dylan Baker), a chummy-looking suburbanite whose attempts to hold a summer soiree go south when a woman arrives, drops her pie, and starts howling, “Nazi!” at him.

As the rest of the trailer teases, Simpson is part of a group...

‘Harriet’ Review: Cynthia Erivo Elevates Formulaic Harriet Tubman Biopic
Harriet Tubman
The legacy of Harriet Tubman has persisted for generations, but not counting an NBC miniseries starring Cicely Tyson that aired over 40 years ago, her story hasn’t received the movie treatment it deserves. That changes with “Harriet,” director Kasi Lemmons’ reverential look at the first stages of Tubman’s dramatic life, when she escaped a plantation and became a key organizer of the Underground Railroad.

“Harriet” doesn’t attempt to reinvent the biopic, relying instead on a poignant turn by rising screen talent Cynthia Erivo (“Widows”) as its soulful centerpiece, against the gorgeous backdrop of John Toll’s cinematography and Terence Blanchard’s euphoric score. that makes up for missed time.

“Harriet” is essentially an origin story: The script, credited to Lemmons and Gregory Allan Howard (“Remember the Titans”), follows erstwhile Araminta “Minty” Ross through her daring escape from a Maryland plantation in the early 1840s, after her possessive owner...

‘Selah and The Spades’: Amazon Acquires Sundance Drama, Will Also Develop as Series
Lovie Simone in Selah and the Spades (2019)
Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to writer/director Tayarisha Poe’s feature film debut “Selah and the Spades,” which made its world premiere as a Next selection this past January at the Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, the streaming giant is developing an original series based on the teen drama, which Poe will write, direct, and produce, along with Lauren McBride, who also produced the film.

Set in the closed world of an elite Pennsylvania boarding school, the Haldwell, where the student body is run by five factions, the film stars a young cast of fresh new faces, including Lovie Simone as the titular Selah Summers. She’s joined by Celeste O’Connor, Jesse Williams, Gina Torres, Henry Hunter Hall, Evan Roe, and Jharrel Jerome, who is likely still basking in the afterglow of his first Emmy nomination for Netflix’s “When They See Us.”
