Ludwig Göransson Wins His Second Oscar for ‘Oppenheimer’ Score
Image
Ludwig Göransson made good on an awards-season sweep by winning an Academy Award Sunday night for the music of “Oppenheimer,” his second career win for best original score.

The Oscar completes a run the 39-year-old Swedish composer has had picking up Grammy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics Choice and Society of Composers & Lyricists awards for the score of Christopher Nolan’s film.

Read More: See all the 2024 Oscar winners here.

Göransson previously won the original score Oscar for 2018’s “Black Panther.” He also has two Emmys for the music of “The Mandalorian,” another Oscar nomination for a song in 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and three more Grammys for “Black Panther” and his songwriting-producing work with Childish Gambino.

Göransson’s was one of seven Oscars won by “Oppenheimer.” At the podium, he thanked director Nolan for his initial idea to use the violin as a central instrument in the score, which...

‘No Time To Die’ Shut Out From Best Picture Category, But Takes James Bond’s Oscar Noms Count To 18 Including Billie Eilish Best Song Nod
Image
As the Oscars wrestle with grabbing a larger millennial audience, the dissing of tentpoles in the Best Picture category continues this year. In addition to AMPAS voters overlooking the sixth highest grossing movie ever at the global box office, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.77 billion) for Best Picture, they also snubbed Daniel Craig’s swan song as James Bond in MGM/Uar/Eon’s No Time to Die in that slot as well.

To date, no 007 movie has been nominated for Best Picture, this despite a push this year for No Time to Die and the franchise’s highest grossing movie of all-time, which also starred Craig, 2012’s Skyfall ($1.1 billion).

No Time to Die was held for a theatrical release during the pandemic, repping one of the event titles to put global cinemas back in business after being shuttered for over a year. No Time to Die grossed...

Paramount Pictures set to remake ‘Face/Off’
Reports are suggesting that Paramount Pictures are looking to remake John Woo’s 1997 action feature ‘Face/Off’ which starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

Since the news dropped, the internet has gone crazy giving their opinions who should star in the roles made famous by Travolta and Cage including ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ actress Vanessa Kirby and ‘Ready or Not’ lead Samara Weaving.

Oren Uziel has been set to write the script, Neal Moritz will produce and David Permut will be an executive producer on the reboot. The plan is to feature a whole new cast.

1997 classic saw FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) obsessed with bringing terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). Archer tracks down Troy, who has boarded a plane in Los Angeles. After the plane crashes and Troy is severely injured, possibly dead, Archer undergoes surgery to remove his face and replace it with Troy’s. As Archer tries to...

Fionn Whitehead in Dunkirk (2017)
‘Dunkirk’ sound editor Richard King on track to set a new Oscars record
Fionn Whitehead in Dunkirk (2017)
“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.

There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). For his work on “Dunkirk” he’s nominated alongside first-time Oscar-contender Alex Gibson,...

Daniel Day-Lewis
Oscars flashback: Daniel Day-Lewis bows before queen Helen Mirren for 2nd Best Actor win [Watch]
Daniel Day-Lewis
Exactly 10 years ago at the 80th Academy Awards, Daniel Day-Lewis won his second Oscar as Best Actor. As he arrived on stage, he bowed before “queen” Helen Mirren as she used the statuette to knight him for his victory in “There Will Be Blood” (watch the video above).

After his surprise Oscar win for “My Left Foot” at the 1990 ceremony almost two decades earlier, Day-Lewis had become an official A-List star. He followed with memorable performances throughout the early 1990s, including “The Last of the Mohicans” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence.” He then received an additional Oscar nomination for “In the Name of the Father,” playing the wrongfully convicted Gerry Conlin but lost the award to Tom Hanks for “Philadelphia.”

Q&A: Supervising Sound Editor Per Hallberg Discusses Working on Life, Ghost In The Shell & More
Sounds are often just as vital as visuals in establishing cinematic worlds that we can escape into as moviegoers. This is especially the case in the recent films Life and Ghost in the Shell, and with both movies now out in theaters, we caught up with supervising sound editor Per Hallberg (of Formosa Group) for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his crucial audio work on both films, as well as highlights from his amazing career in cinema.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Per. How did you initially get involved with Daniel Espinosa’s Life?

Per Hallberg: I met Daniel quite a few years ago in Sweden, and when he came to La to do his first film here, Safe House, he called me to get involved in that project with him. Since then, I’ve worked with him on Child 44.

Will “Star Wars” Awaken a Force within the Sound Editing race?
What does a lightsaber sound like? Or a storm on Mars? Or Q’s latest gadget? Well we don’t know. Rather, films’ sound effects editors use their ingenuity to create these artificial sounds, to be integrated into a film’s soundtrack. The Academy Award for Best Sound Editing rewards the supervising sound editors who are responsible for this important craft. War films and action films frequently score here, and science-fiction/fantasy is another favorite. Animated films also do disproportionately well in this category, which is not surprising given that all non-dialogue, non-music sounds need to be created. Best Picture nominees by no means dominate this category, but films that tank usually have considerable difficulty making the final five. “The Martian” featured extraordinary sounds during crashes and explosions such that viewers feel they are on Mars/in space. Oliver Tarney was nominated two years ago for another October release –“Captain Phillips.

Steven Quale interview: Into The Storm, Final Destination 5
Director Steven Quale talks to us about his latest film Into The Storm, working on James Cameron's The Abyss, bad weather and more...

Steven Quale’s career seems to have been constantly submerged in water. Having worked with James Cameron back on The Abyss, their relationship has meant Quale’s involvement on multiple projects including Titanic and a co-director credit on the documentary Aliens Of The Deep. Quale’s solo feature directorial debut was on Final Destination 5, which wasted no time in plunging most of its cast into water, though they were mostly followed by rather heavy and deadly objects.

We caught up for a chat with Mr Quale to discuss his experiences of soaking actors in water and the challenges of filming a special effects heavy blockbuster, while managing to present a film with a new narrative perspective, as Into The Storm incorporates a first-person perspective into its story,...

Sam Mendes officially won’t direct Bond 24
After steering the franchise to previously unknown heights in the past six months with Skyfall, Sam Mendes has officially decided not to return to direct Bond 24.

The Mendes-directed 23rd James Bond film has taken more than a billion dollars around the world, and simultaneously had critics praising it from the start, culminating in two Oscars last month for Best Original Song (Adele’s and Paul Epworth’s Skyfall) and Best Sound Editing (Per Hallberg and Karen M. Baker, tying with Zero Dark Thirty).

Despite having been offered to return for to direct Bond 24, Empire report that Mendes has ultimately decided that his theatre and other commitments won’t allow him to take the helm for the next instalment.

“It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie,” explained Mendes. “Directing Skyfall was one of...

Oscars Wrap-Up
The Oscars. Hollywood’s biggest night of the year took place Sunday and I was in the press room once again for all the winner’s speeches. From comic turned reporter David Arquette crashing the room (he reportedly was covering the event for Sirius Xm radio, which carries Howard Stern’s show) and asking a question of winner Christoph Waltz to the surprise tie between Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty in the Sound Editing category to Jennifer Lawrence’s explanation of her trip up to the stage, here are some moments from backstage at the Dolby Theatre.

I for one cheered to see women in film bringing home the gold in the technical categories. Those with Academy Awards were Karen Baker Landers for achievement in sound editing for her work on Skyfall, a first win for Costume Designer Jacqueline Durran and her gorgeous work on Anna Karenina, Lisa Westcott’s...

Eff, Marry, Kill: Oscar Surprises 2013 Edition
We don't know if you've heard, but something went down last night. Something happened in Hollywood, something the world saw and won't stop talking about.

Yeah, we're talking about Jennifer Lawrence falling down the 2013 Oscars. (Well, and J-Law's tumble, but we'll get to that.)

Since this is NextMovie and we're not really the type to come at things head-on, we knew that we wanted to recap the Oscars, but how? The only way we know: With a game of Eff, Marry, Kill.

This isn't a hot-or-not, more of a thoughful, mature look at the night that was. (Cough.) Our trusty FMKers ranked the three surprises from the night that shocked us most — Ang Lee's win for Best Director in a wide-open field, "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall" tying for Best Sound Editing, and, of course, Jennifer Lawrence falling ass-over-Dior on her way up to accept her Best Actress statue — and Dtr.

The best and worst moments
The Academy Awards are over for another year. The songs have been sung and the gongs have been given. So what worked and what didn't?

What We Liked …

1) Baffleck coming of age

The key acceptance speech of the evening came from Ben Affleck, as part of the producing team behind the best picture winner Argo. A man on a mission, for sure: he had been, bizarrely, shut out from the best director category, and in any case was on a very, very long road back from the humiliation of Gigli and the whole Bennifer thing. He proceeded, very quickly, to get very tired and emotional. "I wanna thank Canada, I wanna thank our friends in Iran… I wanna thank my wife, who I don't normally associate with Iran… " As the audience dissolved, and Jennifer Garner (the wife in question) got a bit teary, Affleck did a quick, intense bit of...

2013 Academy Award Winners
If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

85th Annual Academy Awards: Highlights and Winners of Oscar Night
L.A.'s Dolby Theater was the place to be Sunday night as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented their 85th Annual Academy Awards (TV). The famed Oscar ceremony was seen by nearly a billion people worldwide, which undoubtedly put a little pressure on first time host Seth MacFarlane. The Family Guy (TV) creator could easily have gone down one of two roads, but ultimately, he chose the one less traveled. Instead of lampooning Hollywood's elite as some feared and expected, the comedian turned most of the jokes on himself (with a few notable exceptions) and for the most part, pulled the hosting gig off successfully. He even threw in some fairly impressive song and dance numbers, a pinch of charm, and just an ounce or two of controversy (Insert song about seeing women's boobs here, plus a tasteless jab at 'Honest Abe' himself). His bits with William Shatner,...

Argo Takes Home Big Prize At 85th Academy Awards – List of Winners
In one of the most unique Oscar races to come down the pike in quite a while, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Argo won the Academy Award for best motion picture of the year during the live ABC telecast of the Oscars from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. Actor Jack Nicholson and First Lady Michelle Obama (via satellite) presented producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney the statue.

Of the win, director Ben Affleck said backstage, “ I was excited about making the movie. These guys had a script, I really liked it, I called them up, and asked will you put me on the movie? And I wanted to do the movie and I wanted to work with them. That’s what I thought would happen. I wanted to work on some quality. I did the movie, we all worked really hard, I hoped that people would like it.

Oscars 2013: are long blonde locks lucky?
Several of the winners and performers at the awards ceremony shared a distinctive look. Spot the theme

Karen Baker Landers and Per Hallberg accept the award for best sound editing for Skyfall. Baker Landers just edges Hallberg in the styling stakes.

Barbra Streisand performed The Way We Were in memory of the famous film figures who died in 2012. She chose to pair her flowing golden hair with a flowing golden dress and some dangling golden chains.

Chilean cinematographer Claudio Miranda won for his work shooting a tiger on Life of Pi. His hairstyle was inspired by another big cat: the lion.

Adele, along with producer Paul "Phones" Epworth, won best song for Skyfall, which she also performed at the ceremony, her mane looking unusually luxuriant.

Oscars 2013 Live: Winners & Losers Listed In Full
This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.

Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.

For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Men With Long Hair Having Best Oscars Ever
Suraj Sharma in Life of Pi (2012)
Most Oscars fashion talk revolves around dresses and tuxes and jewels and shoes and who wore it best and cleavage and manicures and sequins. But the biggest trend so far seems to be flowing locks on men. Which of tonight's Oscar winners sported the most luxurious mane? Was it Life of Pi's cinematographer Claudio Miranda? Zero Dark Thirty sound editor Paul N.J. Ottosson? Or Skyfall sound editor Per Hallberg (who won with Karen Baker Landers)? Just like the sound editing category itself, it's a tie. Congratulations, sirs!

Oscars 2013: 'Skyfall,' 'Zero Dark Thirty' Share Sound Editing Award in a Rare Tie

When it comes to the Oscars, there are surprises -- and then there are big surprises.  A tie in the sound editing category, only the sixth in Academy Awards history, certainly qualified as the latter. Has There Ever Been a Tie for an Oscar?
At this year's Academy Awards, there was a tie (gasp!). It was in the Best Sound Editing category, with the award going to Paul N.J. Ottosson for his work in "Zero Dark Thirty," and Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers for their work in "Skyfall." However, this wasn't the first time a tie happened at the Oscars. Back in 1969, both Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand won in a much more publicized category -- Best Actress -- with Hepburn winning for her performance as Queen Eleanor in "The Lion in Winter," and Streisand as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl." It also happened in 1932, with both Wallace Beery ("The Champ") and Frederic March ("Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde") winning Best Actor; in 1949, when "A Chance to Live" and "So Much for So Little" won the Best Documentary Short award; in 1986, with "Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got" and "Down and Out in America...

Argo (2012)
Leading up to Sunday’s Oscars, EW.com will take a closer look at four categories that moviegoers may mistakenly think of as “technical.” After tackling Film Editing, we turn to Sound Editing, with insights from the nominated supervising sound editors of Argo (Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn), Life of Pi (Eugene Gearty, who shares his nod with Philip Stockton), Django Unchained (Wylie Stateman), and Zero Dark Thirty (Paul N.J. Go Oscar Bowling, Bowl the Perfect Oscar Score — Nick Allen’s Picks for the 85th Academy Awards
Are you sick of those ordinary Oscar office pools? Tired of only guessing the top 6 or 8 categories for the Academy Awards? Let your inner-movie geek shine with Bowl the Perfect Oscar Score (aka Oscar Bowling), created by Jeff Bayer.

Try to nail 300 points on the 2013 Academy Awards.

This is a confidence list.

There are 24 categories.

How to play

Pick your winners in all 24 categories. Then, give each winner a confidence score. Your most confident pick gets 24 points, second most confident gets 23 points, third most confident gets 22 points, and eventually your least confident pick gets 1 point.

This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. If there is a tie (there never is a tie), then the winner is the one with the most points in these three categories combined (Best Picture, Best Actor,...

Oscars Predictions 2013: Who Will Win?
Remember back in ancient times -- oh, about eight weeks ago -- when it seemed "Zero Dark Thirty" was going to sweep the Academy Awards? The Oscar race has twisted and mutated a lot over the past two months. Even with near-certainties in some categories, many of the top prizes are still up for grabs, and upsets are always possible. That's made the 2013 Oscar race one of the most exciting in years for fans to follow, and its ending this Sunday, Feb. 24, is likely to spread the wealth in a way that either pleases everyone a little, outrages everyone a little, or both. Academy members had to submit their ballots by Tuesday, Feb. 19, but even so, there were some last-minute developments that helped clarify the race a little. Best Picture frontrunner "Argo" picked up a couple more awards, one from the American Cinema Editors (the "Eddie" for Best Drama; "Silver LInings Playbook...

Suraj Sharma in Life of Pi (2012)
Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced. Here's our take on best sound editing, which seems like a possible place for the Academy to reward "Zero Dark Thirty" (its really the film's best shot at an Oscar). More commentary to come, but check out all predictions in all the categories here. The nominees: "Argo" Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn "Django Unchained" Wylie Stateman "Life of Pi" Eugene Gearty and Philip Stockton "Skyfall" Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers "Zero Dark Thirty" Paul N.J. The BAFTA Winners List Announced
The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.

And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.

If you were following Jon’s liveblog, or if you watched the BBC’s almost-live coverage of tonight’s proceedings,...
