Why Kyle MacLachlan's Trey MacDougal Didn't Return In And Just Like That...
Image
"And Just Like That..." the often joyless and turgid reboot of the flagship HBO series "Sex and the City," has brought some familiar faces from the original series back into the fray. No, there's no Samantha Jones — though her actress, Kim Cattrall, appeared in a presumably very expensive cameo at the end of season 2 — but two of Carrie Bradshaw's great loves, John "Mr. Big" Preston (Chris Noth) and Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), returned for the revival. Alongside Carrie, Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), a few old "Sex and the City" characters have popped up from time to time; Mario Cantone's Anthony Marentino is a prominent supporting character, and hell, even random socialite Bitsy von Muffling (Julie Halston) has made some appearances. So what about Charlotte's first husband, Trey MacDougal, played on the original series by Kyle MacLachlan?

During an episode of her podcast "Are You a Charlotte?...

Patti LuPone’s ‘And Just Like That’ Character Debuts With a Bubbling Feud and a Salacious History
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “And Just Like That” Season 3, Episode 7.

Patti LuPone made her “And Just Like That” debut in Thursday’s new episode, and she’s already feuding with one of the “Sex and the City” spinoff’s fan-favorite characters.

Episode 7, titled “They Wanna Have Fun,” introduced LuPone as Gia, the strong-willed mother of Giuseppe (Sebastiano Pigazzi). She got off to a great start with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the rest of the ladies, but a bad first impression put her at odds with her son’s boyfriend Anthony (Mario Cantone) from the start.

We also got a glimpse of her interesting backstory, as well as a promise (or threat) that she’ll be a thorn on Anthony’s side for longer than expected.

Gia’s Past

Viewers first meet Gia when she arrives at Anthony’s bread shop to a warm welcome from Giuseppe and the ladies.

Heather Graham
Chosen Family review – fluid directing by Heather Graham ballasts enjoyable romcom
Heather Graham
Graham denounces her toxic family and begins a new relationship, before discovering her beau’s preteen daughter to be a tiny psychopath in a tutu

For younger readers not well versed in last-century cinema, Heather Graham was one of the hottest ingenues in Hollywood throughout the 1990s; her greatest performance was arguably as Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. Recently, she’s taken up writer-director duties (she made her debut in 2018 with a comedy called Half Magic) while continuing to star as well, and this sophomore effort impresses with its mildly acidic observations of contemporary mores. There aren’t exactly belly laughs in this tale of single yoga instructor Ann (Graham), but quite a few of zingers and bits that stick the landing nicely thanks to fluent direction and good comic timing from Graham and her excellent supporting cast, which is filled out by cracking actors who might...

Julia Stiles Reveals Her Feature Directorial Debut Wish You Were Here
Image
We spoke to celebrated actress Julia Stiles leading up to the release of Chosen Family, her new romantic comedy from writer-director and co-star Heather Graham. It's a funny and sweet look at modern-day struggles like finding love while juggling work alongside an overbearing family. Stiles told us how she was inspired by Graham's direction (and sought advice from a surprising action director) for her own upcoming directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, a film adaptation of the novel by Rene Carlino. Stiles told MovieWeb:

"Somebody sent me the book, and I thought, 'Oh, this will make a really good movie. It's a love story. It has some rom-com elements, but ultimately, it's a pretty tragic love story, and I think it's just about appreciating the present moment and the time that we have on Earth, because life is precious. It'll be out in theaters, I think, early next year. I...

Heather Graham Shares Her Thoughts on the Scrubs Reboot
Image
We spoke to Heather Graham upon the release of her directorial project Chosen Family, a comedy film she wrote and also stars in. The title lives up to its name, as Graham's lovable lead character navigates modern romance and lasting friendships while struggling to set boundaries against her increasingly needy family. It's the latest in a long line of projects Graham has tackled over the years, on both the big and small screen. TV audiences know her from Twin Peaks, Californication, and, of course, her standout role on the hit sitcom Scrubs and fans have been hoping for a reboot ever since it went off the air. Graham told MovieWeb:

"I definitely would love to be in the Scrubs revival. Zach [Braff] and Donald [Faison] do a podcast called [Fake Doctors, Real Friends] and we were all talking about that. And I was just like, 'I want to go back and do more episodes of Scrubs!

Chosen Family Review | Screwball Rom-Com Makes You Wince & Smile
Image
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. That's how the adage always went, at least until we started to expand our definition of family. Yes, the notion of a chosen clan is ever-growing in popularity, and it's being explored on the big screen in a variety of ways. There are darker explorations like the Jesse Eisenberg film Manodrome from earlier this year, and now, on a much lighter note, there's the quite obviously titled Chosen Family, a passion project from the always charming Heather Graham.

The last time we spoke to Graham, she was playing a gritty Western character trying to protect her daughter (in the film Place of Bones). This time around, her character Ann is trying in vain to connect with someone else's daughter, giving Chosen Family an uncomfortable comedic end result that might give certain millennials and Gen X'ers Ptsd based on their own past family woes.

Chosen Family Interview: Heather Graham Reflects On Dance-Offs And Her Fight With Julia Stiles (Exclusive)
Image
Written and directed by Heather Graham, Chosen Family is a heartwarming and hilariously relatable film that navigates the complexities of relationships with a blend of comedy and drama.

Featuring an ensemble cast, including Graham, John Brotherton, Andrea Savage, Michael Gross, Julie Halston, Thomas Lennon, and Julia Stiles, the film brings humour and heart to its exploration of family and connection and is a must-watch date movie (you'll walk away with a bigger smile on your face than you did after watching Joker: Folie à Deux).

So, while Chosen Family isn't a comic book movie, we couldn't pass up the chance to talk with Heather after checking this one out.

During our conversation, the actor and filmmaker talked us through her approach to telling this unconventional rom-com story, took us behind the scenes of some standout moments, and reflected on getting physical with The Bourne Identity star Julia Stiles.

‘Our Town’ Broadway Review: Jim Parsons Leads A Thornton Wilder Classic Unstuck In Time
Image
With so much turmoil in the world, it’s at least a little comforting that things haven’t changed much in Grover’s Corners, the place that gives Our Town, Thornton Wilder’s beloved 1938 report from Smalltown USA, its name. People there are born, love and die without so much as looking up to savor what they have. That’s life.

And while a check-in from the fictional New Hampshire town circa 1901-1913 is always a moving and welcome addition to anyone’s frazzled day, the new staging by Kenny Leon, opening on Broadway tonight at the Ethel Barymore Theatre with a cast that includes Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes, Richard Thomas, Billy Eugene Jones, Ephraim Sykes and Zoey Deutch, lacks the strong personality that would send it to the top of the many Our Towns that have staked claims on the world’s stages for nearly a century.

Leon, a...

Screwball Comedy 'The Sixth Reel' Trailer - About Finding a Lost Film
Image
"It's at the top of my list of lost films that I would, without conscience, kill to see." Wolfe Video has revealed a new official US trailer for an indie comedy film titled The Sixth Reel, from filmmakers Carl Andress & Charles Busch. This indie screwball comedy caper from NYC originally premiered in 2021 but hasn't been released until now - available to watch this fall. A down-on-his-luck movie memorabilia collector discovers a legendary lost film and becomes entangled in an outrageous adventure to deliver it to the right hands before it is lost forever. The film is co-written and co-directed by drag legend Charles Busch and the acclaimed American director Carl Andress. The Sixth Reel stars Charles Busch, Julie Halston, André De Shields, and Patrick Page, with Tim Daly and Margaret Cho. This looks a bit too low budget and a bit too kooky for my tastes, but also seems like...

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 Release Schedule: When Does The Season Finale Air?
Sarah Jessica Parker, Sarita Choudhury, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Nicole Ari Parker in And Just Like That... (2021)
“And Just Like That” is back on Max for a second season, and it’s bringing some famous — and familiar — faces.

Kim Cattrall confirmed that she will reprise her role of Samantha Jones in an on-camera cameo. Her character communicated with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) via text message throughout the first season, including Mr. Big’s funeral and the Paris finale.

A slim and trim John Corbett will return as Carrie’s former fiance Aidan Shaw as she moves on from the death of her husband.

“Sex and the City” fans will also be thrilled that Candice Bergen will reprise her role as Carrie’s former editor Enid Frick. Julie Halston will also be back as socialite Bitsy Von Muffling, who is as delightful as her name.

Of course, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are back as Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Miranda Hobbes, Carrie’s longtime BFFs.

‘And Just Like That…’ Actor Julie Halston Wants a Bitsy von Muffling Sex Scene: ‘I Have Pretty T–s’
Image
“And Just Like That …” actor Julie Halston is ready for her Nsfw close-up. The Broadway veteran tells me it’s time for her zany ladies-who-lunch character, Bitsy von Muffling, to have a sex scene on the “Sex and the City” spinoff.

“First of all, I have pretty tits,” Halston says. “If Mpk [showrunner Michael Patrick King] said, ‘Hey, you wanna show your tits?’ I’d be like, ‘Uh, yeah!’ But they’d have to give me a little bit of advance notice so that I could pump up the arms a little bit. Even if it’s not a super sexy scene, it would be nice to see a big makeout scene or a big heavy romance.”

In “Ajlt” Episode 4, Bitsy is at the center of some Nfsw content when she sends Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) a photo of a suitor’s impressive manhood. “I did see the photo beforehand, and I was like,...

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2, Episode 4 Recap: An Unexpected Threesome And Some Impressive Cameos
Image
Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen season 2, episode 4 of “And Just Like That”, proceed with caution.

Is “And Just Like That” finally hitting its stride? The “Sex and the City” reboot is four episodes into its sophomore season, and Thursday’s episode proved to be its best yet.

With Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) back in New York City, the original gang, including Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis), and honorary member Anthony Marantino (Mario Cantone), is able to meet up for lunch for some gossip and dirty talk, just like the old days.

There are quips about Miranda’s new fluid lifestyle with Anthony calling her “Rachel Maddow.” There are not-so-subtle euphemisms on Charlotte’s part — mayo, confetti, and a finale of fireworks (Happy July 4th!), no less — and at the heart of it, there’s the friendships fans of the original “Sex and the City...

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2, Episode 3 Recap: Big Grief, Fake Covid And One Character’s Suicidal Threat
Image
Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched the third episode of season 2 of “And Just Like That”, proceed with caution.

After a rather subdued start to season 3 last week, the “Sex and the City” spinoff series, “And Just Like That”, packed more of an emotional punch this week. As Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is asked to narrate the audiobook version of her book about the death of her husband, Mr. Big (Chris Noth), the fashionista is forced to relive his traumatic final moments.

Though she’d been proud of seemingly getting out on the other side of her grief, Carrie discovers that she’s far from being over the painful loss.

She runs into returning character Bitsy von Muffling (Julie Halston), who also made a cameo in the spinoff’s first season. Bitsy tells her that the second year after a loss is actually the most painful as life continues without that person.

And Just Like That: Sex and the City Revival Explains Kim Cattrall's Absence
Kim Cattrall at an event for Sex and the City (2008)
And Just Like That... we have an answer!

HBO Max's Sex and the City revival premiered Thursday, and it didn't waste any time in giving us a solid answer about why Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones is not a part of the series.

“And where’s the fourth Musketeer? Where’s Samantha?” Bitsy Von Muffling (guest star Julie Halston) asked Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis‘ Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon‘s Miranda Hobbes early into the series premiere.

“Oh, she’s no longer with us," Charlotte said, clearly making giving the wrong impression.

Seriously, could you imagine if the show actually killed Samantha off-screen?

It would not work well for fans and would probably render the new show a huge failure.

“Oh, no, I’m so sorry, I just meant, she’s not, with us,” Charlotte added after some nudging from Miranda.

“She’s in London,” Carrie finally says,...

The surprising appearance of Bridget Moynahan confirms the return of Natasha Naginsky, ex-wife of Carrie’s husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Moynahan has been spotted shooting the series in New York on multiple occasions.

Broadway had already announced its mandatory vaccine policy for audiences and theater workers prior to de Blasio’s Aug.

Broadway’s ‘Tootsie’ Announces National Tour & International Productions
Broadway’s Tootsie musical is hitting the road and going global: In addition to a just-announced national North American tour, producers confirmed plans for London, Australia and a Japanese-language production to premiere in Tokyo.

Santino Fontana Wears ‘Tootsie’ For The 21st Century (And Tells What Had To Go) – Tony Watch Q&A
Last week, Tootsie joined Broadway’s million dollar club – the choice group of productions that break the $1 million mark in weekly box office. Along with 11 Tony Award nominations and a star-making turn by lead actor Santino Fontana, the musical adaptation of the 1982 film comedy starring Dustin Hoffman can, in retrospect, seem like a no-brainer, the type of Broadway success that complainers complain about when they gripe over Hollywood pedigrees.

But take a closer look at To Kill A Mockingbird, Network, Pretty Woman, Beetlejuice and Tootsie, and what jumps out are their differences, specifically their varying approaches to their source material. Mockingbird went meta, Network post-modern high tech. Pretty Woman could have benefited from less respect for its celluloid self, Beetlejuice from more.

Of the musicals, Tootsie found the sweetest balance between old and new, all the more surprising given what would seem, at first consideration, a storyline and worldview best left to the ’80s.

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie (1982)
‘Tootsie’ Broadway Review: Dorothy Michaels Is Back And Standing On Her Own Two Pumps
Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie (1982)
We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president.

You’ll have just enough time during the false-start opening moments of director Scott Ellis’ wonderful new Tootsie to ponder such things, and then the musical and its star Santino Fontana grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not without a few runs in its stockings, but this Tootsie is a delight, a not-quite-blind date that plays out...
