1 Line from The Hobbit Inspired One of Thorin Oakenshield's Most Notable Features in the Films

Quick LinksThorin's Short Beard Was an Act of SolidarityDwarves Were More Important in The Hobbit Than in The Lord of the Rings

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy established what the Dwarves of Middle-earth looked like. Those present in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and at the Council of Elrond were all similar in appearance to Gimli; they had long hair, exaggerated facial features achieved through the use of prosthetic makeup, and most famously, large, bushy beards. They represented the classic, stereotypical image of fantasy Dwarves. Yet when Jackson returned almost a decade later for The Hobbit trilogy, he and the artists at Wētā Workshop broke the typical Dwarven mold. Some members of Thorin's Company, such as Balin and Glóin, would have fit right in alongside The Lord of the Rings' Dwarves, but others looked quite unusual by Dwarven standards.

Where The Hobbit's Dwarves Are During Lord Of The Rings (Are Any Alive?)
Image
Given that they were the heroes of The Hobbit movies, many fans wonder where the dwarves were during The Lord of the Rings. The prequel trilogy of Hobbit movies followed Bilbo Baggins on his first adventure out of The Shire as he joined a band of dwarves looking to reclaim their lost fortune. Given their history with the previous ring-bearer Bilbo Baggins, it may seem odd that none of The Hobbit dwarves lend Frodo a hand in The Lord of the Rings.

The dwarves are shown to be one of the prominent races in Middle-earth as they receive the Rings of Power alongside the elves and the race of man. However, Gimli is the only representation of the dwarves in the Lord of the Rings movies. Some of the heroes die during the journey in The Hobbit, but there are a lot of questions about what becomes to the ones...

There were troll statues in the background of this scene, and in the extended edition of the film, Sam drew attention to them. These were not actually statues but petrified versions of the very trolls whom Bilbo had encountered in The Hobbit.

Following the Weathertop scene in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn and the hobbits traveled through the Trollshaws. It was here that Frodo, whom the Witch-king had stabbed with a Morgul Blade, began to succumb to the magical poison of his wound. Sam felt Frodo's forehead and noticed that he was "going cold.

Watch 'The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies' R Rated Extended Fight Scenes
Martin Freeman in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Back in August, Warner Bros. announced an R-rated Extended Edition of The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, which debuted on Digital HD last month and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD November 17. No details were given as to why this version was R-rated, but Youtube user Joshalots has posted a 15-minute video with new scenes from this edition, which helps illustrated why this was given the restrictive rating. There is a lot more blood and guts in this video than we saw in the theatrical edition, and we also get a new scene towards the end, which shows what happens to the cowardly Alfrid (Ryan Gage), who tried to escape the battle by dressing up as a woman.

The Hobbit Trilogy Extended Edition will also be available, featuring the extended editions of all three films in The Hobbit Trilogy - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug...

Come inside to take a look!

I think I've made it clear over the last few years, that I haven't exactly been a fan of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy (for a variety of reasons). Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition Coming in November
As has been the case with all of Peter Jackson's films (especially where Middle-Earth is concerned), the previous The Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug is getting an extended edition. I loved the Extended Edition versions of all the Lord of the Rings films. They were great and added in some content that genuinely fleshed out characters and storylines...Yet, I've had very little interest in seeing more of The Hobbit films. For the most part, this is due to the fact that I feel The Hobbit films have been bloated from the get-go. There are plenty of scenes in both of these movies...

Check Out Ian McKellen And Luke Evans In The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Image
Whatever your thoughts are on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy when compared to the director’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, you certainly can’t fault him for casting. This new trilogy, which concludes in December with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, has brought back Ian McKellen as the great wizard Gandalf and Orlando Bloom as archer Legolas, while starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug and Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman, among many, many others. Now, we’ve got a new image from the trilogy topper, highlighting McKellen and Evans as they gaze, awe-struck, off-screen at what I can only presume is The Hobbit‘s collective worldwide box office haul.

Granted, the shot isn’t the most revealing, but it’s a nice reminder that this movie is on its way. So much attention...

New The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Image Featuring Ian McKellen and Luke Evans
Warner Bros. has released a new The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies image ahead of the film's big presentation at Comic-Con next week. In the conclusion to the trilogy, Smaug and an army of Orcs descend on the Lonely Mountain, and elves, men, and dwarves must unite to save Middle-earth. Since Smaug and the orcs are all CGI, this image focuses on the flesh-and-blood characters of Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Bard (Luke Evans) whose stunned faces are presumably looking at things that are still in post-production. Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Graham McTavish, Michael Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Ken Stott, and Aidan Turner. The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Gets An Official Synopsis
Though Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy hasn’t received nearly as positive reviews as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the first two installments were solid, if overlong, high fantasy adventures, thanks both to Jackson’s sense of visual splendor and the talents of the ensemble cast. An Unexpected Journey was more dull than many expected, though I personally enjoyed it, and The Desolation of Smaug was a big step up from that, accelerating the pace and featuring some truly epic battles. So, will the trilogy-topper, this winter’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, keep that upward momentum going to become the best of the bunch? It’s too early to say, of course, but the first official synopsis for the fantasy film certainly seems promising.

Courtesy of Warner Bros., the synopsis reads as follows:

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,...

Peter Jackson Revamps 3rd Hobbit Movie Title – The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies
Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.

The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.

Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived...

Jackson's Hobbit Sequel: Second 2013 Release to Top North American Chart Three Weekends in a Row? (Third If Four-Day Weekends Included)
‘The Hobbit 2′ weekend box office: Third 2013 movie to top domestic box office chart three consecutive weekends (photo: Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’) Two weekends ago, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opened way below expectations in the United States and Canada; yet, The Hobbit 2 is hanging in there. Chiefly because Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues underperformed on its domestic debut, The Hobbit 2 topped the North American box office last weekend. Chiefly because Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s collaboration The Wolf of Wall Street debuted with less than $10 million, The Hobbit 2 topped the North American Christmas box office two days ago. And chiefly because there’s no strong competition out there, The Hobbit 2 is expected to top the North American box office once again this weekend, December 27-29, 2013 — the last weekend of the year. Budgeted at approximately...
