John Hammond in The Blue and the Gray (1982)

John Hammond

I revisited the original Jurassic Park movie and book, and here's what I learned
Image
Jurassic Park: Rebirth roars near the top of the box office charts, amidst competition in the form of Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and other franchises—at the time of this writing, it's sitting third on the domestic box office charts for the year so far. And, as of today, it's available on digital.

The titular rebirth of the franchise has inspired me to go back to its roots. Michael Crichton's 1990 book and Steven Spielberg's 1993 adaptation, both titled Jurassic Park, spawned an entertaining and lucrative series that's gone on for over three decades. Fortunately, I was able to revisit both in the form of a physical book and a VHS, the ultimate cozy and nostalgic experience.

The copy of Jurassic Park I’m reading was published as one batch for the first edition. It’s a little worse for wear, but the diagrams and tables Crichton...

10 Things That Don't Make Sense In Jurassic World Rebirth
Image
John Hammond had a dream (and a potential viable business with Jurassic Park), but "Jurassic World Rebirth" proves it'll always turn into a nightmare. Sorry, but humans and dinosaurs aren't meant to coexist -- and don't go blaming the dino-buddies for this fact, because people don't know how to leave well enough alone. It's like an addiction for these folks to be locked up with man-eating creatures in an attempt to see if they can survive with all their limbs intact. At this point, why don't they just rub BBQ basting all over themselves and parade in front of the dinosaurs?

While this franchise asks the audience to suspend a lot of disbelief, especially when it comes to the science and what dinosaurs really looked like, "Jurassic World Rebirth" possesses logic loopholes that can't be ignored. Some of them teeter between "this could have been fixed in another draft" to "Omg!

Jurassic World Rebirth Ignores One Game-Changing Moment From Fallen Kingdom
Image
The "Jurassic" franchise simply cannot catch a break. Ever since Steven Spielberg made one of the most perfect movies of all time with "Jurassic Park" in 1993, the franchise has never managed to achieve anything but increasingly diminishing returns. Sure, the first two sequels at least presented cool ideas and incredible set pieces that are still fondly remembered today — The raptors in the tall grass? The Pteranodon jump scare? — but the "Jurassic World" movies have just been a series of cool ideas immediately tossed aside and ignored.

"Jurassic World Dominion" was obviously the movie most guilty of this, as it somehow ignored the idea of dinosaurs roaming the Earth freely and instead dedicated its plot to a nonsensical story involving prehistoric bugs. Now, "Jurassic World Rebirth" tries to course correct by going back to basics and just pitting humans against dinosaurs on a tropical island. The plot involves a group of...

Steven Spielberg's $1 Billion Sci-Fi Masterpiece With 91% on Rotten Tomatoes Is a PVOD Hit 32 Years Later
Image
If the latest PVOD charts are any indication, dinosaurs will never go out of style. 32 years after wowing audiences in theaters, Jurassic Park has once again become a hit, this time on iTunes.

According to FlixPatrol, as of July 9, Jurassic Park is ranked No. 9 on iTunes' Top Movies list. Steven Spielberg's 1993 sci-fi classic is in good company, as two of its sequels, 2015's Jurassic World and 2018's Jurassic World Dominion, are slightly above it at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Based on Michael Crichton's 1990 novel of the same name, Jurassic Park follows a group of visitors as they struggle to survive and escape Isla Nublar — home of Jurassic Park — after a catastrophic power failure shuts off the safety precautions, allowing the de-extinct dinosaurs, including the vicious T-Rex and velociraptors, to roam free.

Jurassic Park was led by Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill, who respectively portrayed Drs. Ian Malcolm,...

You’ll Be Surprised How Little Dinosaur Footage The Original Jurassic Park Actually Had
Image
Did you know Jurassic Park only featured 14 minutes of dinosaur footage in its entire 127-minute runtime? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Jurassic World Rebirth, the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, directed by Gareth Edwards, is now roaring into theaters. But even after more than three decades, Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 movie remains the highest-rated entry in the iconic film series, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. It’s one of those films in Spielberg’s illustrious directorial filmography that will always stand out for its intriguing subject, immaculate execution, and pathbreaking CGI.

Jurassic Park’s Smart Use of Dinosaurs

But Jurassic Park used surprisingly little of what most people think made it iconic – dinosaurs. You’ll be surprised to know that the entire film featured only 14 minutes of dinosaur footage out of a 127-minute runtime (via Business Insider). Interestingly, just four of those minutes were CGI. With dinosaurs on screen for barely 11% of the film,...

Jurassic World Rebirth Finds A Surprising New Meaning For The Franchise's Dinosaurs
Image
In Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking 1993 blockbuster "Jurassic Park," the billionaire behind the titular hoped-for attraction, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), is practically buzzing with giddy anticipation at how successful his venture will likely become. He crows that his team who helped bring dozens of extinct species of dinosaurs back to life "spared no expense," and that everything in the park boasts "absolutely spectacular designs." Although the small group of experts Hammond has invited to tour the park are indeed impressed with what he's done, having strong emotional responses to the sights of actual living dinosaurs walking the Earth, they begin to have serious doubts as reality begins to set in. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) sums up the potential folly of Jurassic Park succinctly: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

"Jurassic Park," both the first movie and Michael Crichton's source novel,...

‘You Can Kill Him in the Book’: Jurassic Park Writer Explains Sparing 2 Characters Who Died in the Novel
Image
Jurassic Park is one of the most beloved movies of all time, having spawned a franchise that continues to this day with the recent release of Jurassic World Rebirth. The original film was adapted from the book written by Michael Crichton, who collaborated on the screenplay with co-writer David Koepp. Adapting the book came with some big changes, however, which included sparing two characters who were killed off in the original story.

Koepp returned to the franchise to pen the script for the new film, Jurassic World Rebirth, for director Gareth Edwards. In an interview with THR, Koepp was asked about changing the fates of both John Hammond and Ian Malcolm. He explained the different reasons why these characters were spared in the film, in which they were respectively played by Richard Attenborough and Jeff Goldblum. With Hammond, Koepp noted how the movie version of Hammond was more innocent compared...

Jurassic World Rebirth Has A Blink And You'll Miss It Tribute To The Franchise's Creator
Image
This article contains some spoilers for "Jurassic World Rebirth"

I wonder if, when Michael Crichton wrote "Jurassic Park," he could have ever imagined the bloated, decades-spanning, merch-filled megalith it has become. I think of the shots of branded lunch boxes, backpacks, plastic toys, and t-shirts glimpsed in the vacant, powerless gift shop of the first film's park -- items that only foreshadowed what was to come in our own world. There's no question that, no matter your feelings on the more recent "Jurassic World" movies, they have ventured far from Crichton's original narrative focus. However, the latest entry, "Jurassic World Rebirth," still finds time to give the briefest possible shout-out to the series' creator.

The Easter egg arrives very early in the film, as big pharma exec Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) sits in dino-induced traffic near Brooklyn Bridge Park. As he begins his in-car meeting with Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson...

The ‘Jurassic’ rebirth that never happened: How an Oscar-nominated screenwriter almost took the franchise in a wild new direction
Image
Jurassic World: Rebirth stomps into theaters this holiday weekend, looking to sink its teeth into the July 4 box office and revitalize a franchise that even the most dedicated dino-heads would agree is starting to feel a little prehistoric. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, the seventh film in the Jurassic series unfolds on a new island where dinosaurs roam freely... and humans are prey.

While the Rebirth reviews are mixed, the movie posted a $28 million opening day, with a projected $127.5 million gross over the four-day weekend. The Rotten Tomatoes audience scores are also coming in a smidgen higher than the Tomatometer, indicating that these digitally enhanced dinosaurs continue to be a big summer movie draw.

But Jurassic still seems like a franchise in need of some fresh creative DNA. And, as it happens, a bold new direction emerged in the early 2000s from an unlikely source — Oscar-nominated screenwriter...

What's Up With Jurassic World Rebirth's New Island? Ile Saint-Hubert Explained
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Jurassic World Rebirth."

With the release of director Gareth Edwards' "Jurassic World Rebirth," we are now seven movies into this long-running, dino-filled franchise, dating back to Steven Spielberg's original blockbuster classic "Jurassic Park." That movie took place largely on Isla Nublar off the coast of Costa Rica, where John Hammond intended to open his dinosaur theme park before disaster struck and the idea was shuttered. The series has since moved to different islands and occasionally returned to Isla Nublar, but "Rebirth" does something new by bringing us to a never-before-seen island. Namely, Ile Saint-Hubert.

In the first teaser trailer for "Jurassic World Rebirth," Scarlett Johansson's Zora Bennett explains that, "This island was the research facility for the original Jurassic Park." While the movie itself doesn't dive into the full history of the island, we do learn some key things about its history and...

After three years, a new Jurassic World movie is now playing in theaters. Before moviegoers head out to see Rebirth, they can check out the 2015 reboot starring Chris Pratt that successfully revitalized the franchise for free on Tubi.

Jurassic World is now available to stream on Tubi. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the 2015 movie features a fully operational and successful version of John Hammond's vision for a dinosaur amusement park on Isla Nublar, dubbed Jurassic World. Set 22 years after Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic Jurassic Park, the legacy sequel centers around a new species of dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which was created to boost plunging park attendance, escaping, in turn sending Jurassic World spiraling into chaos. With no one else to turn to, operations manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) enlists raptor specialist Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to help her stop the Indominus rex and save her nephews and the park from further danger.

How Jurassic World Rebirth Handles The Wild, Free Dinosaurs From Dominion
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Jurassic World Rebirth."

A mere three years after the release of "Jurassic World Dominion," which was billed as an ending of sorts for the long-running franchise, Universal Pictures has brought the dinosaurs back for another big screen adventure. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the aptly-titled "Jurassic World Rebirth" is billed as a new beginning. It largely delivers on that promise, in no small part by walking back the biggest thing that the previous trilogy tried to do: Namely, making it so that dinosaurs and humans would be truly forced to co-exist alongside one another.

The new film takes place five years after the events of "Dominion," which left dinosaurs running loose with humans all over the world. However, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs, with many dying off. The remaining dinos mostly live in isolated environments near the equator, which have climates resembling...

How to Watch the ‘Jurassic Park’ Movies in Order
Image
In 1993, Steven Spielberg released a cinematic adaptation of Michael Crichton’s hit novel “Jurassic Park.” Co-written by Crichton and David Koepp, Spielberg’s film remains in high esteem to this day, one of the most rewarding and brilliantly constructed blockbusters in cinema history. Beyond the beauty and fear of the dinosaurs themselves (portrayed through a mix of digital and practical effects that holds up to this day), the film provided poignant commentary on the dangers of mass consumption, expansion and commercialization.

“You read what others had done, and you took the next step,” Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm says in one of the film’s most iconic scenes. “You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now you’re selling...

Jurassic Park: Here’s why no other film in the franchise can compare to the original
Image
This week sees the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth, and it seems like it’s being met with a bit of a shrug from fans, even if it’s still going to make a solid amount of cash—these movies always do. Jurassic Park has become a franchise for Universal, and a profitable one at that. Yet, none of the films have had the magic the first one did. But what magic was that? I’m glad you asked.

You see, younger audiences may not appreciate it now, but Jurassic Park gave us Dinosaurs. The new Jurassic World movies are full of CGI dinosaurs, but we had never seen them convincingly portrayed on the big screen before. At best, we’d seen—admittedly impressive—stop-motion versions such as those made by Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen, but Spielberg’s Jurassic Park truly brought them to life in a way no one could have ever imagined.

Where to Watch All the ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Jurassic World’ Movies Before ‘Dominion’
Image
When director Steven Spielberg unleashed “Jurassic Park” on audiences in 1993, the sci-fi blockbuster quickly became the highest-grossing film ever at the time – and created a franchise that’s still running today.

With six films in total, the “Jurassic” franchise spans nearly three decades, with four different directors putting their stamps on what the world would look like if dinosaurs walked alongside humans.

Spielberg’s initial adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel showcased visual effects that were groundbreaking at the time, and each successive film in the franchise has attempted to one-up and/or recapture the magical mix of awe and terror that’s so effectively pervasive in the original movie.

With “Jurassic World Rebirth,” a brand new reboot of the franchise, hitting theaters this summer, there’s no time like the present to revisit the franchise. Below, we’ve put together a handy list of where every “Jurassic” movie is currently streaming.

Jurassic World Rebirth: Gareth Edwards' Latest Resurrects The Wrong Franchise Elements
Image
Jurassic World Rebirth has massive footprints to fill. Ever since Universal Pictures' storied three-decade franchise debuted with Steven Spielberg's masterful Jurassic Park, there have been significant ups and downs in its subsequent outings. The latest, from director Gareth Edwards and writer David Koepp, creates some strong innovations, but muddles itself in the effort to recapture series magic.

The Jurassic franchise has frequently suffered from a little bit of plot repetition, balanced against interesting new developments. Jurassic Park introduced audiences to John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), bringing archaeologists and a mathematician to check out his ambitious park of resurrected dinosaurs on Isla Nublar. It endangered everyone when security failed, including Hammond's grandchildren. The Lost World saw tragedy befall another island, Isla Sorna, including Ian Malcolm's (Jeff Goldblum) young daughter, Kelly.

Jurassic World Rebirth review | Dino-mite or a saur-y sight?
Image
Rogue One director Gareth Edwards takes over for the Scarlett Johansson-versus-dinosaurs sequel, Jurassic World Rebirth. Our review:

The villain in Jurassic Park isn’t the dinosaurs or the science that brings them back from the grave – it’s the pursuit of profit. In Michael Crichton’s novel and the movies that followed, we’ve repeatedly seen how greed taints everything. As the rather less sympathetic version of John Hammond said in the original book, “Nothing is going to stop me from opening Jurassic Park to all the children of the world… Or, at least, to the rich ones.”

Inevitably, commerce plays a part in the Jurassic franchise’s own existence, and the conundrum for any sequel is how it justifies its making beyond a studio’s desire to generate more cash. The series already faced this multiple times: first in the immediate follow-ups directed by Steven Spielberg and Joe Johnston,...

Why The Jurassic Park Comics Are Almost Impossible To Read Today
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There are few franchises in the history of major multimedia franchises that can rival that of "Jurassic Park." What started as a brilliant novel from best-selling author Michael Crichton gave way to one of the most important blockbuster movies ever made. As of this writing, the "Jurassic" movies have grossed $6 billion at the box office alone -- and counting. That's just the tip of the iceberg though, as the franchise also includes animated TV shows, theme park attractions, merchandise and, for a time, comic books.

At the height of "Jurassic Park" fever, after Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic hit theaters and became the biggest movie ever up to that point, Universal began unleashing a string of tie-in products into the marketplace. That included several comic book series from Topps Comics. It all started with a four-issue adaptation of the movie itself,...

Do Jurassic Park And Face/Off Exist In The Same Universe?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Easter eggs in movies are an interesting thing. Sometimes, they are there only for the most hardcore of fans to spot. Rather famously, a "Guardians of the Galaxy" Easter egg has still never been spotted, at least not that director James Gunn has admitted to. At times, modern blockbusters can feel more like Easter egg hunts than anything else. Sometimes, though, an Easter egg is so subtle, yet so compelling, that it warrants a great deal of discussion. Such is the case with one from John Woo's 1997 action classic "Face/Off." And buckle up, because things are going to get weird.

Though this particular Easter egg has been pointed out in the past, it began making the rounds online again recently. We'll dig into it more in a moment but, in essence, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot from "Face/Off" suggests that the...

Cloning Scientist Reveals If Dinosaur-Cloning Technology From 'Jurassic World Rebirth' Actually Exists
Image
Jurassic World Rebirth roars into theaters July 2, and fans of the dinosaur franchise are already lined up for what could be a worthy sequel in the franchise created by Steven Spielberg in 1993. All the Jurassic films, in some way or form, have managed to deliver thrills to viewers who have found that technological progress isn't always a good thing. At least, not when trying to clone creatures that have become extinct. Many viewers still wonder if such technology exists. We're no scientists, but luckily, a real one has weighed in on the debate.

In the first Jurassic Park, John Hammond and his scientists were short-sighted and didn't think of the consequences of cloning dinosaurs, something Dr. Ian Malcolm addressed when explaining his chaos theory, and a theme that has become recurrent throughout the franchise. However, aside from the dilemmas of trying to play God, the real question is: How far...

“Pretty Much How We Do It”: How Jurassic World Rebirth's Science Is Accurate - And How It's Not - Explained By Colossal Biosciences CEO
Image
Colossal Biosciences' boss breaks down the science in Jurassic World Rebirth and how it is compared to de-extinction technology in the real world. The fourth Jurassic World movie and the seventh in the Jurassic Park franchise stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora, who leads a skilled team to secure genetic material from the original Jurassic Park site.

Co-founded by George Church and Ben Lamm, Colossal specializes in de-extinction technology. The company recently brought back dire wolves that went extinct 10,000 years ago, using preserved ancient DNA.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Lamm broke down how accurate the science was in Rebirth. The expert explained that the scientific aspect of the film is overall accurate. However, one thing that hasn't been made possible is bringing back dinosaurs because of the lack of DNA sources.

Lamm revealed that the oldest DNA they work with is "about 1.2 million years old," and dinosaurs...

Why Dr. Henry Wu Actor Bd Wong Was Bitter About Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Jurassic Park" is one of the most beloved blockbuster movies of all time. More than that, director Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel of the same name was the biggest film of all time at the box office at the time of its release in 1993. It's the kind of movie any actor would be thrilled to have on their resume, even if their role in it was relatively small. That's why it might be surprising to learn that Bd Wong, who played Dr. Henry Wu, was bitter about his role in the film for a long time.

For those who may need a refresher, Dr. Henry Wu is the chief geneticist working with John Hammond at Jurassic Park. In Crichton's novel, Wu is a pretty crucial character. In the movie, however, he's mostly in just one scene,...

Former 'Jurassic World' Star Talks About Possibly Returning to the Franchise
Image
Bryce Dallas Howard has become known for much more than just the Jurassic World movies, such as her work in the Star Wars franchise and roles as diverse as the TV series Black Mirror and the Twilight Saga, and she says that she's open to reprising her character in the dinosaur franchise created by Steven Spielberg in the early '90s. Howard portrayed park operations head Claire Dearing in the first three iterations of Jurassic World. However, given Universal Pictures' decision to fully reboot the Jurassic universe, Howard has stepped out. When asked if she's willing to return in the future, Howard says that she's "open," but also understands the franchise's new direction.

Howard spoke to Screen Rant to promote her new film, Deep Cover, an action comedy co-starring Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed. When addressing the Jurassic franchise, the actor/director expressed her excitement about seeing the new film Jurassic World Rebirth,...

Raiders Of The Lost Ark's Thrilling Opening Was Shot On One Of Hawaii's Most Beautiful Islands
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The word "iconic" gets thrown around a bit too much in regards to films. If anything could rightfully earn that moniker, though, it is Steven Spielberg's 1981 action/adventure classic "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Working with his friend and "Star Wars" director George Lucas, Spielberg crafted a cinematic icon like no other in the form of Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford in every single movie in the series to date. But it all started with "Raiders." More specifically, it all started with that unforgettable opening sequence.

The introduction of Ford's Indy in the film's opening, from his emergence from the jungle to being chased by that boulder, is cinema history. It's blockbuster filmmaking at its finest. There's a reason why "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is hailed as one of the greatest movies ever made. While that...

Why Steven Spielberg Didn't Direct More Jurassic Park Movies
Image
If you're a filmmaker in 1993 having one of the best years in your entire career, then congratulations, because your name must be Steven Spielberg. On top of winning over seven Academy Awards for the highly acclaimed WWII historical drama "Schindler's List," Spielberg was also one of many faces behind adapting Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" for the big screen. The film not only won three Oscars in the very same ceremony, but it also cemented itself as the pinnacle of CGI wizardry that visual effects artists still look up to. Of course, Spielberg was already a Hollywood staple at this point, having previously pioneered the modern blockbuster as we know it with 1975's "Jaws." All the same, the filmmaker was about to show audiences something they had never seen before, much like Richard Attenborough's ambitious dinosaur mogul John Hammond.

"Jurassic Park" simply doesn't happen without VFX artists Dennis Muren,...

How Much Money Did Sean Connery Lose by Rejecting ‘Lord of the Rings’?

When Peter Jackson approached Connery to play Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the legendary actor turned it down, reportedly because he “didn’t understand the script.” That decision ended up costing him more than just a chance at cinematic immortality.

With the trilogy going on to become a global phenomenon, Connery walked away from a deal that could’ve earned him about $400+ million. Here’s a closer look at how one of cinema’s coolest icons passed on one of its biggest paydays.

Jurassic World Rebirth's Final Trailer Goes Full Horror With New Mutant Dinosaurs
Image
Dinosaurs are back on the menu this summer as Universal Pictures is bringing us "Jurassic World Rebirth." With the release of the seventh entry in the long-running franchise now less than two months away, the studio has offered up a new look at director Gareth Edwards' take on the series in the form of a brand new, full-length trailer. It's jam-packed with dino action, as one might expect. Check it out for yourself above.

As we can see, several dinosaurs from the past are returning in this latest entry. The Spinosaurus is making its first appearance since 2001's "Jurassic Park III." And there's more than one! But these are different from the one we met all those many years ago on Site B. That's because this movie takes place at the research facility for the original Jurassic Park. That's allowing Edwards to keep things somewhat contained, as opposed to 2022's...

How To Watch The Jurassic Park Movies In Order
Image
Michael Crichton's novel "Jurassic Park" actually began its life as a 1983 screenplay about a graduate student that accidentally recreated a pterosaur in a lab. Crichton put it down, however, when he noticed the overwhelming volume of dinosaur media in the world. He picked it back up again when he realized that no one will ever get tired of dinosaurs and eventually turned his screenplay into his successful 1990 novel.

The rest is history. Steven Spielberg adapted "Jurassic Park" to film in 1993, and it became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. In the ensuing 32 years, Spielberg's film gave rise to six "Jurassic Park" sequels, two animated TV shows, two live-action shorts, and a merchandise empire that is only outstripped by those of Marvel and the "Star Wars" franchise.

The canonical, live-action entries in the "Jurassic Park" property are as follows:

"Jurassic Park" (1993) "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997) "Jurassic Park III...

'How To Train Your Dragon' Director Reveals Why He Wanted To Bring Berk to Live-Action in New Sneak Peek
Image
This summer, we return to the Isle of Berk in the much-anticipated How To Train Your Dragon live-action reboot, and ahead of Toothless and Hiccup's (Mason Thames) first flight, we've got a brand-new look behind the scenes of the film, with director and creator Dean DeBlois explaining the secrets behind bringing Berk to life. We also get some fresh looks atHiccup's father, Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler) — and he does look incredibly vast, we must say.

In the video, DeBlois — who was behind the original animated films which began releasing in 2010 — explains why he was so keen to come back:

"I decided to revisit How to Train Your Dragon, because I want you to feel the thrill of flying on top of a dragon, but also the fear that you could fall. Dragon fire is hot. Being in near death situations. Being in near death situations. I want that thrill...

Why Rob Liefeld Flew to Arizona to Pick Up His Newest Comic from the Printers
Image
A few weeks ago, Rob Liefeld flew to Arizona to see his latest comic fresh off the printers. Holding the books in his hands, he admired the artistry, from the quality of the paper to the feel of the spine. A few hours later, he boarded a return flight to California, carrying with him 80 comics across five different editions of Youngblood, the title that launched Image Comics in 1992.

It’s almost unheard of for a creator to hand-select every detail about a book, much less transport the copies themselves. But Liefeld wanted to try something new for the 33rd anniversary of Youngblood, with each edition of this comic only available to buy on his website, or at a one-day only signing Wednesday at Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles.

The idea was last minute for Liefeld, who decided in late February that he wanted to celebrate the Youngblood anniversary with a new book,...

Star Wars: How Much It Would Cost To Build And Operate The Death Star
Image
The majority of the political ramifications that occur within the "Star Wars" universe during the Rise of the Empire era are based on the development, construction, operation, and destruction of the original Death Star. First introduced to audiences in 1977 in "Star Wars: A New Hope" (and chronologically through its schematics in "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones"), this space station and superweapon was the physical embodiment of the Empire's supremacy over the galaxy.

Naturally, the construction and operations of the Death Star would cost, well, an astronomical amount of money. As Dr. John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) from "Jurassic Park" would say, the Empire "spared no expense" regarding the superweapon that destroyed the planet Alderaan. But what would the actual budget for the space station be, vis-à-vis the Imperial credit-to-u.S. dollar conversion?

David Koepp
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) Movie Ending Explained and Themes Analyzed: How Is the T. Rex Captured?
David Koepp
Loosely adapted from Crichton’s 1995 sequel and written this time solely by David Koepp, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” is as much a follow-up as it is a shift. The universe expands, the consequences from the first film start circling back, and the illusion of control wears thinner. There’s new blood, new terrain, but the old itch remains: the need to watch, to study, to own. And at the centre of it all, the creatures—still magnificent, still terrifying.

But this time, it’s different. The wonder isn’t clean or contained anymore. It’s chaotic, dirtier, and doesn’t wait for permission. There’s a tonal shift that Spielberg doesn’t shy away from—the jungle feels lived-in, and the danger isn’t hypothetical. And even though the script sometimes bites off more than it can chew, the themes it carries land well enough to make you feel it wasn’t all noise.

Michael Crichton
Jurassic Park (1993) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: What Triggers the Collapse of the Park’s Security Systems?
Michael Crichton
Written by Michael Crichton and David Koepp, and adapted from Crichton’s 1990 novel, “Jurassic Park” begins as a cautionary fable about the perils of genetic engineering. But in the hands of American cinema’s most prolific orchestrator of spectacle, Steven Spielberg, it transforms into something far more layered—a soft anti-capitalist allegory, a pulse-pounding sci-fi action thriller, and, at its quietest, a tender story about how care, empathy, and love hold things together when systems collapse.

What emerged was not just a film but a pop-culture icon: one of the most entertaining, immersive, and technically revolutionary mainstream blockbusters of the 20th century. It inspired generations of filmmakers, spawned a sprawling franchise, and set a new benchmark for what the cinematic spectacle could achieve. Beneath its crowd-pleasing sheen lies a plot built on elegant simplicity—philosophically grounded, never intellectually diluted, and populated by characters whose clarity serves the film’s deeper questions rather than dulling them.

Quick LinksQ's Ridiculous & Unhinged Plot, ExplainedDespite Telling Completely Different Stories, Q & Jurassic Park Do Have a Lot in Common

Stephen Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993) is a science fiction action film and creature feature based on Michael Crichton's 1990 novel of the same name. To say Jurassic Park is one of the most infamous blockbusters in history isn't much of an exaggeration and, considering it was directed by Spielberg himself, it should come as no surprise. Spielberg's Jaws (1975) gave birth to the summer blockbuster and many of his movies have followed suit.

Jurassic Park is a perfect blend of sci-fi, monsters, and social commentary about the hubris of man. John Hammond funds a team of genetic scientists to bring dinosaurs back from extinction and plans to open a theme park where visitors can witness the miracle of rebirth. Jurassic Park is basically an elaborate and extremely dangerous zoo. While the movie...

The 15 Biggest Changes Jurassic Park Made to the Book
Image
Adapting a beloved novel into a film often brings about significant alterations to fit the new medium, and Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park is no exception. Steven Spielberg's cinematic interpretation, while maintaining the essence of the original story, incorporates numerous changes that affect character development, plot progression, and thematic emphasis. The alterations in character portrayals and relationships offer a fresh perspective and often evoke different emotional responses from the audience compared to the novel.

These thematic elements shift subtly between the page and the screen, influenced by the different storytelling techniques inherent in literature and cinema. These changes not only highlight the distinct approaches of the two mediums but also illustrate the director's vision and the broader context in which the film was produced. Understanding these differences enriches the appreciation of both the novel and the movie, offering insights into the adaptive process and the nuanced ways in which...

The 15 Dumbest Decisions Made by the Jurassic Park Characters, Ranked
Image
The Jurassic Parkfranchise may have given the world some of the best dinosaur movies ever made, but the human characters are deeply flawed and occasionally asinine. Like all survival films, the Jurassic Park movies also succumbed to the cinematic curse of characters making dumb decisions. But if it weren't for these people losing their ability to make sense, the movies wouldn't even have a premise.

It's safe to assume that a crisis involving an unprecedented threat is almost always the product of a series of terrible decision-making. Despite the protagonists' uncanny ability to deal with the unknown, they consistently engage in a spiral of life-threatening instances because of the supporting characters' well-pronounced ignorance. Sometimes, however, even the main characters of Jurassic Park have been seen doing rather stupid things.

Dark Jurassic Park Theory Claims Hammond's Dinosaurs Aren't Real
Image
Released more than 30 years ago, the original Jurassic Park is a cinematic landmark and an iconic part of the 1990s. Showing audiences the wonder and terror of resurrected dinosaurs on the big screen makes it the ultimate blockbuster. Since its debut in 1993, Jurassic Park has hatched tons of sequels, tie-ins, and merchandise, not to mention gaining just as many fans. And the devoted fandom has its own Jurassic Park theories about the movie's timeline, including one that could change everything.

One particularly twisted idea is that the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park aren't dinosaurs at all but merely genetically engineered "things" made to look like dinos. This would paint John Hammond as an even more amoral character than he already is, while also changing the very heart of the world's biggest dinosaur franchise. Here's why the theory might actually have some weight to it, especially considering the sequels.

You May Recognize The Actors Behind These Electric State Characters
Image
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have crossed one more non-Marvel Cinematic Universe entry off their list this week with the release of their new sci-fi film "The Electric State." Based on the book by Simon Stålenhag, the film sees Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt traverse an alternative 1995, where robots that were once servants to humanity have been abandoned and ostracised following a failed rebellion against their makers. It's among these rusty and worn-down bots, however, that Brown's Michelle finds allies to be reunited with her brother, whom she believed was long since dead, and who could hold the key to bringing the bots back into winning back their rights.

There is a wealth of impressive talent bringing the CGI characters of "The Electric State" to life, though their voices might be hard to recognize on first viewing. To help you navigate the cast, here's a list of hardwired...

‘He has the charm of the devil’: Steven Spielberg’s Greatest Gift Wasn’t Just Jurassic Park, It Was Bringing Richard Attenborough Out of Retirement
Image
Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park has become a cult classic in more ways than one. While the series still lives on through Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, the essence of the original series cannot be replicated. Spielberg has also walked away from the franchise, handing the reins to other directors who are trying to imitate the same level of timelessness.

Fans still find themselves revisiting Spielberg’s 1993 classic, even though the film was released more than three decades ago, just because every aspect of that film is perfect. However, many may not know the true levels of mastery that the director achieved when he was making the film, like him bringing a legend out of retirement just to play a villain.

The Cancelled Jurassic Park TV Series Picked Up Where The Classic First Film Left Off
Image
These days, "Jurassic Park" is a massive media franchise with several theatrical films and even more to come. In addition to the movies and Michael Crichton's original novels, there have been numerous video games and a popular Netflix animated series, "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous." What you may not know is that "Camp Cretaceous" wasn't the first time someone tried to turn "Jurassic Park" into a small-screen cartoon. In fact, a much earlier attempt was made in the 1990s right around the time the first "Jurassic Park" movie hit theaters (though it never made it into full production).

For many years, details about this project were kept secret. However, old pitch decks, story treatments, and concept art have leaked out bit by bit, published by outlets like Jurassic Outpost. The show, which had a working title of "Escape from Jurassic Park," was ambitious to say the least, and it's not...

Jurassic Park's Scariest Monster Has Been Hiding in Plain Sight for 32 Years
Image
Quick LinksWho Created the Chaos Unleashed By Jurassic Park? Was John Hammond a Man or a Monster? What Does The Legacy of John Hammond Have to Teach Us?

Frame by frame, audiences globally keep searching for a clear glimpse of Jurassic World Rebirth's "D. Rex," when the franchise's scariest monster has been hiding in plain sight for 32 years. Throughout the Jurassic Park series, filmmakers have tried to up the ante with bigger, scarier creatures designed to "scare the kids." Whether it is the T. rex, Spinosaurus, or the Indominus Rex, fans have always considered the dinosaurs with "more teeth" the deadliest within the franchise. However, the most dangerous, lethal, and, in some cases, tragic monster doesn't use his teeth to tear prey apart but rather to form them into a kindly smile.

ReMastered: Netflix's music series tells the story of Robert Johnson
Image
In the Coen Brothers’ 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou, Chris Thomas King plays Tommy Johnson, a young blues guitarist modeled on the real-life musician Robert Johnson. Though he plays his acoustic guitar and sings a lot like the legendary Delta blues artist, there is not very much else that approximates Robert Johnson. Tommy is a happily-go-lucky character who comes to a rather pleasant ending at the fictional movie’s close.

The real Robert Johnson did not lead a particularly happy life and was dead by 27, the victim of some poisoned whiskey.

Now, I say Johnson was not especially happy, but if I’m being honest, I have to admit that I don’t really know. The fact is, very little is actually known about Robert Johnson. He was born in 1911 and died in 1938, He spent most of his life in Mississippi. Beyond that, we have 29 recorded songs that helped...
