Paul McCartney’s Rare Photos to Feature in Special L.A. Exhibition
Image
This spring, the art gallery Gagosian LA will exhibit 36 of Paul McCartney’s recently rediscovered photos, including some that featured in the former Beatle’s Eyes of the Storm book and many that have never been shown before.

The photos were taken between December 1963 and February 1964. And the exhibition, titled “Rearview Mirror: Photographs, December 1963–February 1964,” opens April 25 and runs through June 21.

One never-before-circulated shot (above) is an artistic view of Ringo Starr in a loose-fitting white shirt, drumming at Miami Beach’s Hotel Deauville ahead of the the Beatles’ second Ed Sullivan Show appearance.

Ladybug Ladybug
Image
Several atom-fear exposés bravely ‘told the truth’ about the madness of the nuclear standoff. They didn’t get more liberal-precious than this uncompromising, difficult-to-watch ordeal based on a true incident. When an Imminent Attack alarm sends a tiny elementary school into a panic, Frank and Eleanor Perry pull no punches, finding the worst possible outcome to twist one’s insides in helpless frustration. The notorious yet little-seen show stars stage actors then unfamiliar, a couple of whom would soon become much bigger names. For us Children of the Bomb it’s the traumatic connection between Duck and Cover and Miracle Mile — or “Romper Room of Fear.” Richard Harland Smith’s commentary gives this release the context it needs, answering most of the questions that have hovered over it for 57 years.

This Year’s Oscar Nominees Get Gorgeous New Posters from Shutterstock
The Oscars are almost here, and Shutterstock is getting in on the action by reimaging the posters for this year’s nominees. While most of the official posters for the nominees were pretty good (although the less said about the bland one for Call Me by Your Name, the better), Shutterstock’s team of designers decided to channel various artists to come up with new designs. Specifically: “Call Me by Your Name” with artist inspiration from James Rosenquist “Darkest Hour” with artist inspiration from Richard Hamilton “Dunkirk” with artist inspiration from Takashi Murakami “Get Out” with artist inspiration from Keith …...

The Hospital
A story of murders in the ER becomes, courtesy of writer Paddy Chayefsky, either a preview of social breakdown or an impassioned examination of why we invest our lives and souls in imperfect institutions. George C. Scott is the doctor coming apart at the seams, who meets his match in a New Age hippie from a New Mexico commune. My instinct is that such a person would not look like Diana Rigg, but everybody needs a dream girl.

The theatrical life of Derek Jarman
Derek Jarman is remembered as an innovative film-maker and artist but his stage work is key to his career – even his own residence was a performance

Derek Jarman wandered into theatre, as he did into much of his creative life. The stage design department at the Slade School of Art in 1963 was casually structured, and, for the era, an uncloseted zone of gaiety. He'd previously slapped a distemper brush on scenes for Lorca's Blood Wedding and other plays put on by fellow students at King's College, London. He had not seen much theatre, as movies – even concerts – came cheaper; the first production that really excited him was Peter Brook's short and gory staging of Antonin Artaud's Spurt of Blood in the RSC's 1964 Theatre of Cruelty season.

Jarman put a lot of effort into his design course, outlining a surreal play, The Billboard Promised Land (a mashup of The Wizard of Oz...
