Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu have addressed the show tackling themes of racism in its latest episode, "Lux." The second episode of season 2 featured The Doctor (Gatwa) and companion Belinda Chandra ( Sethu) traveling to 1950s Miami.

While "Lux" is a largely light-hearted episode pitting The Doctor and his companion against evil cartoon character Mr. Ring-a-Ding, there are moments that address the genuine history of the era that The Doctor and Gatwa found themselves in. In one scene, The Doctor revealed to Belinda that they were breaking the law simply by sitting in a segregated diner because both are people of color.

Deadline can reveal that Big Talk Studios, the producer behind Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon series The Outlaws, is pitching a UK version of NBC’s iconic comedy. Thirty years after Cheers’ last orders, Big Talk has enlisted Simon Nye, the British writer known for Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, to adapt the series for a UK audience. Nye will be showrunner if Cheers is greenlit.

Cheers ran for 11 seasons and 275 episodes on NBC, depicting life in a titular Boston bar run by Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Regulars included Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley), and the show is consistently ranked among the best comedies ever made.

The show offers an in-depth exploration of the life and legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The series will premiere on Sept. 16 on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of a Kent village on Thursday for the funeral of comedian and entertainer Paul O’Grady who was been laid to rest following a “moving” service that included a eulogy from actor Julian Clary and a reading from Lord Michael Cashman.

The presenter – known and loved for drag alter-ego Lily Savage – died on 29 March aged 67. While his cause of death is yet to be officially disclosed, he suffered numerous heart attacks over the years.

The service featured a series of personal tributes, including a bronze statue of his beloved late dog Buster that had been placed on a leopard-print throw.

Paul O’Grady was laid to rest today (Thursday 20 April) at a private service in Aldington, Kent.

Though the funeral service was restricted to O’Grady’s closest friends and family members, fans and neighbours were invited to watch the procession as it travelled through the village of Aldington in Kent.

After the procession, several celebrities and influential figures were seen at the funeral service at St Rumwold’s Parish Church in the Kent village of Bonnington.

The Salvation Army Band played songs such as “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie. At the time of his death, O’Grady was starring in a touring production of the show as orphanage boss Miss Hannigan.

The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood was among the mourners spotted at the private service.

Freddie Ross Hancock, the British marketing consultant and publicist who represented Sophia Loren, Julie Andrews, Benny Hill, Theodore Bikel and Jim Dale and helped bring the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to New York, has died. She was 92.

Ross Hancock died Sunday at her home in Manhattan, friend and former Warner Bros. executive Luke Fontneau announced.

Another of her clients was popular English comedian and actor Tony Hancock. They began a romantic relationship in 1957 while he was married and wed in December 1965, but soon after she filed for divorce, he died by suicide in 1968 at age 44.

After Hancock’s death, she moved to the U.S., where she worked as an acquisitions executive for American Video Films, served as vice chairman of the U.S. wing of the Royal Television Society and consulted for companies including Miramax.

Grrrngh, click, vroom. Hear that? The sound of a series revving out of the muddy furrow in which it’s languished for two episodes, and getting back on track. Episode three gave us much less Matthew in the tower, and much more Diana spontaneously sprouting tree branches from her fingertips and playing interdimensional cat’s cradle with the gleaming strings of life. Witch stuff, not spy stuff! And all the better for it.

Episode three was also all the better for a shift in Matthew’s behaviour. Tell me, how was dinner? Before diving back to the gloomy past, A Discovery of Witches took a gulp of fresh air in the modern day and dropped in on Sept-Tours. With Sarah and Em there under Ysabeau’s protection, the table was being laid for what promised to be a primo scene between the mortal-enemies-turned-housemates. And then… pouf, nothing. It was straight back to the 16th century for another round of bad Matthew. Fingers crossed that the characters we invested in from season one are better served in future episodes.

Satu’s quest to learn about her powers and destiny, for instance, is worth more to fans of season one than political Elizabethan intrigue. Right now though, Satu’s story is only being used as a parallel to Diana’s own search – the dark witch and the light, both seeking answers about their destiny.

Roger Deakins, the Oscar-winning 1917 cinematographer, has been knighted in the Queen’s New Year Honors list as the British monarch celebrated the careers of behind the scenes talent in the film and TV industry.

Deakins was honored for his services to film, marking a glittering career in which he has won two Oscars and five BAFTAs for an illustrious rollcall of credits that includes Blade Runner 2049, True Grit, No Country for Old Men, and James Bond feature Skyfall.

Deserving Britons across the UK have been named to the annual New-Year Honours list, published today as part of the British honors system.

New Year’s Day annually sees the naming of new members of orders of chivalry and recipients of other official honors. The awards are presented by or in the name of the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, or her vice-regal representative.

Lewis Hamilton, Sheila Hancock, Lesley Manville, and Nina Wadia are among the 1,239 recipients of this year’s New Year Honours. The list includes celebrities and those who work in the public sector and communities of the UK, providing distinguished service in all four nations of the United Kingdom.

Public sector workers make up 14.8% of the list and include firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, police officers and local government workers. Included in the List are 123 (10%) health and social care workers who were part of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, the screen adaptation follows Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian and witch who, after discovering a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodelian Library, is pulled further into a world of magic and danger she has been trying to avoid since she was young. A Discovery of Witches is returning for its second season. The vampire series will first air in the UK on Sky TV the channel announced the long-awaited return of the series on social media. It will premiere in the UK in January 2021.

In the United States, the first season of the series streamed on SundanceNow and Shudder starting in January 2019. The first season was then aired on AMC and BBC America a few months later. A second season premiere date for these American outlets has not been announced.

Matthew Goode, Teresa Palmer, Steven Cree, Sheila Hancock, James Purefoy, and Paul Rhys all appear in A Discovery of Witches, which is based on the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.

The coronavirus pandemic has not deterred Los Angeles-based actor-filmmakers Darwin Shaw and Will Hawkes.

The duo has launched “The Antiviral Film Project” in recent weeks as a collage of 19 shorts made by 19 film crews from 19 global communities for 19 charities, leading to three films that will be produced in traditional fashion once self-isolation ends.

“The Antiviral Film Project aims to create a new kind of international motion picture anthology about the global Covid-19 experience,” said Shaw. “It will be a journey told in three chapters — Isolation, Connection and Emergence. We will be documenting the process of virtual development in real-time, producing episodic behind-the-scenes content, taking you on the journey with us and ultimately leading to a three picture cinematic experience.”

Created by Chris Lang, ITV’s Unforgotten pairs Nicola Walker’s Dci Cassie Stuart with Sanjeev Bhaskar’s Di Sunil Khan. Along with their team, those two investigate decades-old murder cases, piecing together events that transpired many years ago to deliver justice and closure to the victim and their relatives.

Series one saw the duo called to investigate the remains of a man long-buried under the foundations of a London home, while series two began with the discovery of a skeleton dredged up from the River Lea. Series three was the distressing story of a missing teenager whose body was discovered under the central reservation of a motorway.

A Discovery of Witches is becoming a family affair: James Purefoy (The Following) has joined the Season 2 cast as the stepfather of Matthew Goode’s character.

Purefoy’s Philippe De Clermont is also the founder of the Congregation and commander of the Knights of Lazarus. Other cast additions include Steven Cree (Outlander) as vampire Gallowglass De Clermont, Sheila Hancock (Delicious, EastEnders) as elder witch Goody Alsop and Paul Rhys (Borgia) as Andrew Hubbard, the vampire ruler of all creatures in London in 1590.

A bitter, proud Scottish widow decides to tick an important item off her bucket list before moving into a retirement home in “Edie,” an uneven dramedy from U.K. commercials helmer Simon Hunter, working from a screenplay by Elizabeth O’Halloran that has a big problem in tone and beaucoup clichéd contrivance. While there’s drama aplenty in the notion that octogenarian Edie Moore (the superb Sheila Hancock) yearns to climb Mount Suilven, in the Highlands, the filmmakers too often undermine the dignity of their appealing protagonist with crude slapstick. Hancock makes a determined heroine who deserves better than the knockabout and patronizing treatment her character suffers. The only thing that does not disappoint is the ravishing and varied landscape, even if it is shot a bit like a tourist board advertisement.

The film originally premiered at the Edinburgh and Raindance Film Festivals in the UK in 2017, and is finally getting a theatrical release in the Us coming up next month. Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will star in Stx’s dance-themed comedy “Work It” from STXfilms and Alloy Entertainment.

Alicia Keys is producing with Elysa Koplovitz Dutton and Leslie Morgenstein from Alloy Entertainment.

Liza Koshy and Keiynan Lonsdale will co-star. Laura Terruso will direct and do a rewrite of the original script, which was penned by Alison Peck. Peck also wrote Stx’s upcoming “Uglydolls.”

Carpenter will portray an awkward teenager who, after being rejected from her high school’s dance team, assembles a crew of misfits to compete against them in a national dance championship.
