Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová have reunited as The Swell Season and released their first new song since 2023. Listen to “People We Used to Be” below.
Written by Irglová and produced by Sturla Mio Thorisson, “People We Used to Be” features The Swell Season’s signature harmonies backed by Hansard on electric guitar and Wurlitzer by Irglová.
In a statement, Irglová explained the track is a eulogy to past versions of ourselves. “It’s a song about trying to reconcile with what feels like an end of an era and allowing one’s self to mourn the people we used to be while choosing to fight for the person we love and the life we built with them,” she said. “It is a song of defiance and determination as much as heart aching nostalgia.”

The world may have devolved into a cruel, dark, Hobbesian state of nature in 2024, but it was a pretty amazing time for live rock music. The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were in stadiums, Pearl Jam, Weezer, David Gilmour, and Olivia Rodrigo headlined arenas, Neil Young and Crazy Horse hit the shed circuit, and Yes cut itself in half and still managed to out-prog all their competitors at theaters and amphitheaters all over the country.

The ominous task that faced Eve Hewson when she first read John Carney’s script for Flora and Son had been accepted before she even realized it.
Sure, she knew Carney’s work, almost exclusively delivering features that baked music into the very fabric of their construction. She’d seen Glen Hansard belting at the top of his lungs in Carney’s debut, Once; Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo making sweet music together in Begin Again; Ferdia Walsh-Peelo embracing ’80s pop in Sing Street. She knew what was coming, but still hoped it never would.
She fell madly in love with Flora, a single mum living in a Dublin apartment block with her delinquent teenage son Max, turning each page as Flora salvaged a guitar from a skip, had it tidied up, and gifted it to Max. She followed along as the character started taking guitar lessons by Zoom with...

The Pogues are reissuing their drunk tank Christmas classic, “Fairytale of New York,” on seven-inch vinyl with proceeds benefiting a charity long supported by late frontman Shane MacGowan.
The new seven-inch is available to pre-order now, and £6 (about $7.50) from each sale will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community, which works to end and prevent homelessness. The 7-inch single will feature “Fairytale of New York” on the A-side, with the instrumental of the song on the B-side. It costs roughly $12, with $7.50 from each sale going to Dublin Simon Community. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to The Pogues and Shane MacGowan’s family for their generosity in creating such a special legacy for Dublin Simon Community with this release,” Emma Kilkenny, Head of Fundraising & Communications at Dublin Simon Community, said in a statement.

Shane MacGowan was known to enjoy an adult beverage or two — or ten. As mourners celebrated his life, the Pogues frontman made sure the drinks kept on flowing, as he left behind more than $12,000 to pay for the bar tab at his wake.
The Independent reports that following MacGowan’s funeral on December 8th, friends and family gathered at the singer’s favorite local pub, the Thatched Cottage in Nenagh. There, they enjoyed drinks courtesy of MacGowan.
“One of infamously hard-boozing MacGowan’s former drinking partners” told The Independent that MacGowan handed over €10,000 to be used for the bar tab, saying it was, “Shane’s last request.”
Update: MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, clarified that “his last request was for peace and love in the world.”

Shane MacGowan’s funeral was as much of a celebration of his music as it was of the man. In the streets outside of the church, mourners joined in unison to sing some of MacGowan’s most beloved songs with The Pogues. Inside, Nick Cave gave an emotional rendition of “A Rainy Night in Soho,” and Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill teamed up for a rousing performance of “Fairytale of New York.”
Fittingly, MacGowan’s band delivered the final performance of the ceremony, as Spider Stacy led The Pogues’ surviving members in a rendition of “The Parting Glass.” It marked the band’s first time playing together since 2014.
MacGowan died on Thursday, November 30th at the age of 65 from what was later revealed to be complications from pneumonia and viral encephalitis. See further tributes to MacGowan from Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono, and read our very own Jonah Krueger...

The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has officially been laid to rest. On Friday, December 8th, fans, friends, and collaborators alike came together to honor the Irish icon’s life and legacy with a moving funeral in Dublin. Outside the St Mary’s of the Rosary Church where the ceremony was held, though, another touching tribute was taking place: mourners took to the streets of Dublin to sing MacGowan’s songs.
As captured in videos posted on social media, fans who had been waiting on the streets to see MacGowan’s funeral procession pass stuck around, which led to an impromptu jam session. Musicians equipped with banjos, harmonicas, and tin whistles led the arrangements, as the chorus of Dubliners sang songs like “Dirty Old Town” and the Pogues Christmas masterpiece, “Fairytale of New York.”

Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill performed during the funeral of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan on Friday, December 8th, singing the band’s 1987 hit “Fairytale of New York.”
MacGowan wrote “Fairytale of New York” with his Pogues bandmate Jem Finer, and their original recording also features Kirsty MacColl on vocals. In addition to becoming perhaps the band’s best-known single, it’s also become a Christmas mainstay, keeping its hold on the UK charts every year around the season.
Backed by members of The Pogues, Hansard and O’Neill gave a faithful rendition of “Fairytale of New York,” even getting audience members to stand up and dance in the aisles. Watch an emotional video of the moment below.

Low-budget films can achieve impressive box office returns, sometimes earning over a hundred times their initial investment. Success is not limited to any specific genre, with low-budget films in horror, comedy, action, and even documentaries finding success. Clever marketing strategies, captivating storytelling, and strong performances can contribute to the success of low-budget films.
Some box office successes are greater than others, with several films that were made for less than $1 million earning their budgets back dozens of times over. It's impressive when a movie makes more than a billion dollars, but most of these projects have budgets of over $200 million to begin with. From Titanic to Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing movies of all time cost an awful lot to make in the first place.
While it's impressive for a film that costs $200 million to see a massive return on its initial budget, it's even more amazing when high box office earnings come from low-budget projects.

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.
But, thanks to last week’s deal between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), all of the late-night shows will return to the air on Monday, Oct. 2 with brand new episodes. As The Streamable noted last week, because these types of shows are generally day-to-day operations, they are able to get back to airing new episodes almost immediately.

The docu-drama, which centers on the brutal murder in 1996 in Ireland of French film and TV producer Toscan du Plantier, has been co-written and will be co-directed by Sheridan, best known for “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father,” and Merriman. The unsolved crime was previously the subject of Sheridan’s documentary series “Murder at the Cottage.”
Krieps garnered widespread acclaim with her breakthrough performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” in 2017. As well as the Cannes prize, her performance in last year’s “Corsage” also won her the European Film Award for best European actress.
Jim Sheridan walks the red carpet for “The Secret Scripture” during the Rome Film Festival.

Glen Hansard is set to release his fifth solo record ‘All That Was East Is West Of Me Now’ on October 20. It will mark the singer-songwriter’s first record in over four years and follows a period that found Hansard moving between collaborative work with Eddie Vedder and Cat Power to live performances with The Frames and Markéta Irglová/The Swell Season. The effect of which helped give direction to ‘All That Was East Is West Of Me Now’, a record that is by all turns noisy and meditative, sprawling and hypnotic, Hansard’s most rock record since Burn the Maps-era The Frames.
The record opens with a call to arms in the powerful and stately “The Feast Of St. John.” Evoking echoes of “On the Beach” Neil Young and ‘Magnolia’-era Songs:Ohia, the song features Warren Ellis (The Dirty Three/The Bad Seeds) on violin and feels like raucous...

Glen Hansard has announced All That Was East Is West of Me Now, his first solo album in four years. The project is out in full October 20th, while lead single “The Feast of St. John” is available to stream now.
Rather than working out new songs in solitude or road-testing compositions while on tour, Hansard began prepping All That Was East Is West of Me Now by playing a five-show residency in a pub in his native Ireland last November. “I told no one,” he said of the gigs. “We set up in the corner and played to the locals, some of whom were only half listening. A collection of farmers and workers, dart players, pool sharks.”
Hansard continued, “I played two hours of new songs each week, some songs finished, some half-baked. Through this process I realized what I had and what I had to work on further...

Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard have reunited as The Swell Season to share “The Answer Is Yes” ahead of their upcoming summer tour (get tickets here). Stream their first new music together in over a decade below.
As Irglová explained in a statement, the sentimental duet came together during a trip Hansard made to Iceland to connect about their tour, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of Once, the 2007 Irish musical drama in which they starred and featured their original music. The track features frequent Swell Season collaborators Marja Gaynor and Bertrand Galen, as well as contributions from several Icelandic musicians: Tina Dico and Helgi Hrafn Jónsson on vocals, Þorvaldur Þór Þorvaldsson on drums, and Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson on bass.
Once the duo began sharing ideas about new music, Irglová set out to write a song they could “sing together each night” and “felt right for the time and place; deeply personal and yet widely universal.
