Alfonso Ribeiro Says Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Role Ruined Acting Career
Image
Alfonso Ribeiro is widely known for his unforgettable role as Carlton Banks in the hit comedy series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. While the role catapulted Ribeiro to stardom, it came with a price, as he says the high-profile part in the TV series doomed his acting career.

During an interview with Closer Weekly, Ribeiro was asked about the sacrifices he's had to make. He said that his Carlton role was actually a sacrifice, because the association with the character made it too hard for casting directors to consider him for other parts. Ribeiro isn't denying that playing Carlton did wonders for his career in show business, and that he's fortunate to have been cast, but that it nevertheless finished his run in acting.

Alfonso Ribeiro Says His ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel Air’ Role Ended His Acting Career
Image
In a new interview with Closer Weekly, Alfonso Ribeiro said his iconic role in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as Carlton Banks was a “sacrifice” for his acting career.

“Playing Carlton on ‘Fresh Prince’ became a sacrifice. I used to always say doing Carlton was the greatest and worst thing that ever happened to me,” Ribeiro said.

“It was one of the greatest roles that I ever was fortunate enough to play. But it was also the role that stopped me from acting again because people couldn’t see me as anything else. The sacrifice was not having an acting career anymore.”

Despite that downer of a sentiment, Ribeiro does have favorite memories from filming.

“It was about the cast and spending time with them. Before every show, we would go into Will Smith’s dressing room, and we’d play music and dance and just have a great...

Jack Hanna, fierce animal advocate and late-night talk show staple throughout the 1980s and 1990s, is now in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Hanna’s wife Suzi has confirmed that the beloved zookeeper, who was first diagnosed in October 2019, doesn’t remember anyone beyond her, his dog Brassy and his oldest daughter Kathaleen. “The Jack people knew isn’t here anymore, but pieces of my husband are,” Suzi told the Columbus Dispatch. “And I’m going to hang onto them for as long as I can.”

Remembering Betty White’s Legacy as an Animal Advocate, From ‘The Pet Set’ to the L.A. Zoo
Image
“My preoccupation with animals is an open secret,” wrote Betty White in her 2011 book “Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo.” The legendary star, who died this week at age 99, was known for more than just her TV and film work. She was a self proclaimed “zoo nut” who spent her life advocating for animal welfare.

White’s parents were animal lovers and she grew up going to zoos regularly. As her profile as an actor and TV personality grew, it became natural for her to use her platform to spotlight that passion.

In 1971, White created and hosted “The Pet Set,” a syndicated series that featured White interviewing celebrity guests including Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Burnett and Doris Day, and their pets and animal trainer Ralph Helfer. She produced the series herself along with her husband, longtime “Password” host Allen Ludden. “The Pet Set” ran for 39 half-hour episodes, and was...

‘The Conservation Game,’ With ‘Tiger King’ Star Carole Baskin, Scores Global Sales (Exclusive)
Image
Michael Webber’s documentary “The Conservation Game” has scored a raft of global sales.

The film explores the largely unregulated U.S. trade in exotic animals, especially big cats like lions, tigers, and leopards and their connection to celebrity conservationists. It follows retired police officer and exotic animal expert Tim Harrison and fellow animal rights activists including attorney Carney Anne Nasser — who initiated the wildlife trafficking case against “Tiger King” Joe Exotic — and Carole and Howard Baskin (founders of Big Cat Rescue).

The film tracks Harrison as he stumbles upon a bombshell discovery while undercover at an exotic animal auction and starts an investigation to track down the whereabouts of rare and endangered big cats. As his investigation unfolds, Tim wrestles with the consequences of exposing the tightly held secrets of the exotic pet trade and ultimately confronting his childhood hero, zookeeper Jack Hanna.

The documentary, which won the Santa...

“Jungle” Jack Hanna, 74, has been diagnosed with dementia, his family revealed in a letter to the public. Hanna’s family believes the former zookeeper, a favorite late-night guest of Johnny Carson and David Letterman’s, has Alzheimer’s disease.

Larry King Remembered as ‘TV Pioneer’ and ‘True Mensch’
Larry King
Tributes poured in on Saturday for Larry King, the beloved suspender-wearing TV show host who interviewed everyone from world leaders to Hollywood stars to ordinary Americans over the course of a six-decade broadcast career.

King died Saturday at age 87 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had been hospitalized last month with Covid-19.

“We mourn the passing of our colleague Larry King,” CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement. “The scrappy young man from Brooklyn had a history-making career spanning radio and television. His curiosity about the world propelled his award-winning career in broadcasting, but it was his generosity of spirit that drew the world to him. We are so proud of the 25 years he spent with CNN, where his newsmaker interviews truly put the network on the international stage.”

“Just heard the awful news about Larry King,” former late-night host Craig Ferguson tweeted. “He taught me so much.

David Letterman Says Regis Philbin Is ‘In the Same Category as Carson’
Image
Regis Philbin was never formally on the payroll of “The Late Show With David Letterman,” but he might as well have been.

When Letterman retired in May 2015, Philbin, the TV veteran who died on July 24 at 88, emerged as the most frequent visitor to joke and spar with Letterman in the guest chair over the CBS late-night franchise’s 22-season run. He logged 136 appearances, far more than the No. 2 guest, animal handler Jack Hanna, at 75. Philbin also had numerous appearances during Letterman’s NBC days on “Late Night With David Letterman.”

Philbin made a career out of a being a TV host who made the rounds of every other talk show on the air — always with a wry smile and a great story at the ready. But his Letterman visits were always extra special. The two are clearly cut from the same cloth as men who seem born to speak extemporaneously on television.
