‘King of the Hill’ Stars on Reboot Voice Cast Changes and Honoring Their Departed Friends
Image
For King of the Hill’s Stephen Root, who voices the titular Hank Hill’s long-time friend and neighbor Bill Dauterive, the decision to come back for a reboot of the Mike Judge and Greg Daniels co-created series 15 years after Fox canceled it was “a no-brainer.”

“Mostly, and it always is with these things, it was about the writing. Is the writing really good? And are these people you want to work with? A big yes to all of that,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter while talking about the animated comedy’s return alongside two of his co-stars. “At that point, it was 13 years of family, and we are one big family. We couldn’t wait to get back with each other.”

“I feel the same way,” adds Toby Huss, who voiced Hank’s father Cotton Hill, while reflecting on his decision to join the original series and reboot. “Initially...

King of the Hill: Is the Indian Kid in the 2025 Reboot?
Image
Fifteen years after it was cancelled, Hulu rebooted King of the Hill, and a brand-new season was released on August 4, 2025. The voice actor for the character John Redcorn, Jonathan Joss, tragically passed away in early June 2025.

This led many to speculate if John/Indian Kid would return in King of the Hill Season 14. Luckily, Joss had recorded his lines for four episodes of King of the Hill Season 14 before his sudden death, so yes, the Indian Kid is back in the reboot!

Earlier this year, Joss had lost his house in a fire, and tied the knot to Tristan Kern de Gonzales. Whether or not he will be replaced as John Redcorn in the upcoming seasons of the adult animated series is uncertain at the time of writing.

King of the Hill Season 14 Review: One Of The Best Revivals Ever
Image
Plot: After years working a propane job in Saudi Arabia to earn their retirement nest egg, Hank and Peggy Hill return to a changed Arlen, Texas to reconnect with old friends Dale, Boomhauer and Bill. Meanwhile, Bobby is living his dream as a chef in Dallas and enjoying his 20s with his former classmates Connie, Joseph and Chane.

Review: King of the Hill has been off the air since 2009 and a lot has changed since then. The world is a very different place and so there is always the question of whether or not that the humor would translate into modern era. And I’m happy to say that this new iteration absolutely nails the tone and spirit of what made Koth great. This is my favorite animated series of all time, so I had very high expectations, and they were met in just about every way.

Season 14 follows Hank...

How ‘King of the Hill’ Brought Hank Hill to the 2020s
Image
[Editor’s note: This interview contains minor spoilers for Season 14 of “King of the Hill.”]

For almost 15 years, “King of the Hill” was one of the most reliably funny and consistently comforting shows on network television. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ animated sitcom managed a tricky balancing act: Its protagonist, the old-fashioned traditionalist Republican Hank Hill (Mike Judge), maintained politics out of date with a changing culture, and with views often more conservative than many of the writers on the show’s staff.

But the series also admired Hank’s positive attributes — his work ethic, his fundamental decency — never reducing him to a one-note stereotype. In many ways, the show had its cake and ate it, too. It was a lightly satirical portrait of conservative America that conservative viewers themselves could enjoy, a series that treated its characters — from the strait-laced Hank to the conspiracy-theory-spouting Dale Gribble (Johnny Hardwick) — as both objects of laughter and endearingly lovable despite their flaws.

Here’s Why This New ‘King of the Hill’ Episode Is the Perfect Tribute to Johnny Hardwick
Image
Two years ago this Friday, the King of the Hill fandom and the conspiracy theorist community lost one of their brightest stars with the death of beloved voice actor Johnny Hardwick — or, at least, that’s what the Atf wants you to think.

When Hardwick passed away at the age of 64, he was halfway through recording his lines for the newly released revival season of King of the Hill, leaving his fellow voice star Toby Huss to take over the fan-favorite role of Dale Gribble, professional exterminator and extrajudicial surveillance expert. Through his outlandish (and entirely correct) theories about secretive government organizations, his insane schemes to expose his friends and neighbors for their own clandestine operations and his hilarious obliviousness of his wife’s relationship with John Redcorn, Dale developed a following of his own unlike any other King of the Hill character during the original run, and the Hulu...

King of the Hill Revival Lands on Hulu After 15-Year Hiatus
Mike Judge in King of the Hill (1997)
Fifteen years after its broadcast farewell, King of the Hill returned on August 4 with ten brand-new episodes streaming exclusively on Hulu in the United States and via the Hulu hub on Disney+ overseas, marking the show’s first season produced for a purely digital platform.

The revival—shepherded by showrunner Saladin K. Patterson alongside creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels—opens with Hank and Peggy Hill stepping off a decade-long propane assignment in Saudi Arabia to discover an Arlen transformed by smartphones, ride-share apps and boutique boba cafés.

Bobby is now a twentysomething chef running a German-Japanese fusion spot in Dallas, while alley companions Dale, Boomhauer and Bill waste no time resuming lawn-chair philosophising—reminding audiences why the original series became a comfort staple.

Judge, Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Stephen Root and Lauren Tom reprise their roles, and recordings left by the late Johnny Hardwick allow Dale Gribble to feature...

How Hard Is Dale to Watch in the ‘King of the Hill’ Revival?
Image
King of the Hill premiered in January of 1997. In all kinds of ways, that was a different world: before 9/11; before the forever wars in the Middle East; before smartphones; before birtherism; before QAnon; before Covid; before January 6th; before a lot of other world events that became red meat for conspiracy theorists. When viewers first met Dale Gribble (voice of Johnny Hardwick), his anti-government beliefs were so quaint they were easy to laugh at, but many may now be wondering how he plays in Season 14.

The short answer: generally not too unbearable!

The worst of Dale — like the worst of the season — is in the premiere. Hopes that electoral politics might not come up at all are dashed as we learn about Dale’s successful mayoral run, standing out from the 10 other candidates by opposing all masks. If I never have to hear about election deniers as though they espouse a cogent political philosophy,...

‘King Of The Hill’ Creator Mike Judge & Cast Talk Revival: “We Wanted To Bring That Kind Of Old-School Person Into The World”
Image
After a 15-year wait, it’s time to dust off your favorite draft beer and break out the grill retrofitted with propane and propane accessories because King of the Hill is back.

The Emmy-winning series created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels picks up several years after we last saw the Hill family. Hank (Judge) and Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy) are now retired and return to a more modern Arlen, Texas, after years of working in Saudi Arabia. Their son Bobby (Pamela Adlon) is 21 and living his best life while navigating adulthood as a Japanese-German fusion cuisine chef in Dallas. The Hills’ friends — conspiracy theorist Dale (Johnny Hardwick/Toby Huss), bumbling barber Bill (Stephen Root), fast-talking Boomhauer (Judge), new neighbor Brian Robertson (Keith David), perfectionist Minh (Lauren Tom), news anchor Nancy (Ashley Gardner) and Bobby’s friend Connie (Tom) — also make appearances as they help their friends process the changing world.

Here’s the Darkest Joke in the ‘King of the Hill’ Revival
Image
The new season of King of the Hill is still, mostly, a sunny family sitcom. But, on occasion, its humor glides into the shadows. We saw it in the season premiere, in which Dale (voice of Johnny Hardwick) tells his friends his mayoral run was only made possible with the $37 purchase of a dead four-year-old’s Social Security Number. We see it again in the second episode — and nothing else quite as morbidly hilarious happens for the rest of the season.

In “The Beer Story,” Hank (Mike Judge) is settling uneasily into retirement. He doesn’t want to sleep in like some kind of “nepo baby” (who taught Hank this term? Show yourself!), but when he’s up early, he can’t find anything to fix around the house. A Monsignor Martinez reboot about the original character’s vengeance-seeking son fills a little time, but there’s so much more stretching out ahead of him.

The Most Self-Consciously 2025 Jokes From the ‘King of the Hill’ Premiere, Ranked From Least to Most Shameful
Image
When I reviewed the new 14th season of King of the Hill a couple of weeks ago, I wrote that the first episode was redolent with cranky references to contemporary life as experienced by Hank (voice of Mike Judge) and Peggy (Kathy Najimy), just returned from a six-year stint at Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

For any who may not have believed a show as smart as King of the Hill would trade in such corny and expected material, here’s proof: a complete list of the most aggressively 2025 jokes in the Season 14 premiere, ranked from least to most shameful.

20 Bathroom Signs

On the drive back from the airport, Hank asks to stop at a taco place, since Mexican food was the only thing they couldn’t get right on the base in Saudi Arabia.

There, Hank can’t parse what the pictures on the doors denote: They both have chin-length hair,...

‘King of the Hill’ Cast and Crew Tease That Time-Jump – and Which Character Is ‘Not Extreme Anymore’
Image
It’s been 15 years since fans were last blessed with a new episode of “King of the Hill” — but time has kept on trucking for the good people of Arlen, Texas, the same as it has in real life.

Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ animated sitcom returned with Season 14 on Monday, complete with a time jump that sees Peggy and Hank Hill returning from a propane job in Saudi Arabia to find Bobby as a 20-something chef in Dallas. Ahead of the premiere, showrunner Saladin K. Patterson and voice actors Stephen Root, Toby Huss and Lauren Tom opened up to TheWrap about why 2025 is the right time to bring the beloved series back.

“I think people really need it. I think it’s just perfect timing, because the world is so crazy right now,” Tom said. “I’ve heard from many fans that we are a bit of a comfort show for them,...

King of the Hill Revival Debuts With Near-Perfect Rt Audience Score: 'Just as Great If Not Better'
Image
Remakes, revivals, and reboots are a given nowadays, and fans are always wary about seeing their favorite films and shows continued after several years. However, King of the Hill seems to have found the perfect formula to do it.

After 15 years, King of the Hill has returned with Season 14. The revival of the hit animated series debuted on Aug. 4 with a full season of 10 episodes. After winning over the critics with a 100% score ahead of its release, the audience agreed with the first opinions, giving the King of the Hill revival a near-perfect 94% approval score on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ahead of the show's premiere, critics who got a chance to see the show gave King of the Hill a perfect score of 100%. Many of them called it the "rare revival that is able to age its characters and modernize the world," with a different review calling it "the...

The ‘King of the Hill’ Revival Didn’t Mention Luanne Once
Image
Of all the recasts and returning guest stars in Hulu’s revival of King of the Hill, the late, great Brittany Murphy and her character Luanne Platter didn’t get so much as a mention in the new season, and that deserves a round of applause.

Back in December 2009, just a few months before King of the Hill would end its original 13 seasons on linear television, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical request at Murphy’s house and found the TV and film star unresponsive. Murphy died that night from cardiac arrest, devastating the King of the Hill fandom and casting a pall over the final four episodes of the series’ Fox run.

For the last 15-plus years, Murphy’s tragic demise has been an inextricable part of the show’s legacy, complicating the feelings of King of the Hill fans toward that last season and leaving...

‘King of the Hill’ Is Back and Ready to Take on 2025 America
Image
Perhaps the most unhinged character on “King of the Hill” during that show’s original run from 1997 to 2009 was pest exterminator and out-there conspiracy theorist Dale Gribble. As originally voiced by the late Johnny Hardwick, Dale’s fringe viewpoints — which frequently centered on government cover-ups and doomsday prepping — were seen as a bit of harmless fun.

Cut to 2025, and “King of the Hill” is back on television for a long-awaited Season 14 on Hulu. A lot has changed, and perhaps most notably, Dale’s views are now more mainstream than many would care to admit.

“Nationally, we’ve made a turn towards Dale,” says Toby Huss, who took over as the voice of the character in Episode 7 of the new season, following Hardwick’s death. “I hope we’re all Ok with that.”

Of course, in its early-21st-century run on Fox, “King of the Hill” was never an overtly political show.

The Five Most Surprising Returns in the ‘King of the Hill’ Revival
Image
King of the Hill is back with new episodes after a 15-year hiatus, and so are some side characters who we never expected to make it out of 2010.

Earlier today, Hulu released the first season of its King of the Hill revival, which brought the beloved animated series into the present day with an ambitious time-jump that turned Bobby Hill into a 21-year-old professional chef, Hank and Peggy into retirees recently returned from Saudi Arabia and Dale Gribble into a slightly older but otherwise entirely unchanged Dale Gribble. King of the Hill has broken free from the floating timeline that trapped the child characters in a 13-year pre-pubescence, and half the fun of the stellar new season has been seeing how so many iconic characters matured into the modern era.

While Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Dale, Bill, Boomhauer and the Souphanousinphone family were all expected to return, this time-jumped version of Arlen,...

Ranking ‘King of the Hill’ Characters By How Much They’ve Changed in the Revival
Image
In the original version of Arlen, Texas, change was slow-to-nonexistent — but that was before they had a significant vay-gan community.

After a 15-year hiatus, King of the Hill is back with a new season on Hulu that aged-up its iconic characters in a bold and unusual departure from the show’s original floating timeline. Rather than transport the Hill family and their neighbors into the present day without addressing the decade-and-a-half break between seasons, Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and their writers decided to allow their characters to age and mature to the point where Bobby is a 21-year-old head chef at his own (partially owned) restaurant, Hank and Peggy are retirees fresh off an extended stay in Saudi Arabia and Dale Gribble is… well, still Dale.

The present-day characters of the King of the Hill reboot run the gamut from virtually unchanged to massively matured, and after binging all 10 episodes...

Everyone's Biggest Fear About The King Of The Hill Revival Is Completely Unfounded
Image
Before the legacy revival of "King of the Hill" hit the Hulu streaming waves, the hit animated sitcom from Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had been off the air for 15 years. Despite ending during the early years of the Obama administration, the series' themes feel strikingly relevant even today. "King of the Hill" took a satirical yet heartfelt look at American life through the lens of the Hill family; patriarch Hank Hill (voiced by Judge), a propane salesman with strong principles, lives with his multi-talented wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy), who works as a substitute teacher (among many other things), their eccentric and sensitive son Bobby (Pamela Adlon), their naïve niece Luanne (the late Brittany Murphy), and the rest of the denizens of the fictional Texas town of Arlen.

Often written off as just another show poking fun at Southern stereotypes, "King of the Hill" is much deeper than it appears.

Stephen Root, Lauren Tom and Toby Huss on Getting Their Groove Back for the ‘King of the Hill’ Revival
Image
King of the Hill is back, and thankfully, Hulu really nailed it by adding enough change to keep things interesting, but not so much as to make it a different show.

What’s most familiar about the show, of course, is its voice cast — namely, Stephen Root, who reprises his role as Bill Dauterive; Lauren Tom, who plays both Minh Souphanousinphone and her now-adult daughter Connie; and Toby Huss, who used to play Kahn Souphanousinphone (a part since handed off to The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng), but has now taken over the role of Dale Gribble after his original actor, Johnny Hardwick, passed away during production.

All three recently joined me via Zoom for a spoiler-ish talk about their return trip to Arlen, Texas.

So, what’s it like to be returning to King of the Hill?

Stephen Root: It’s like coming home and seeing your family.

Lauren Tom: Just a great,...

King Of The Hill Revival: Here's What Happened To Each Main Character Since We Last Saw Them
Image
The following contains spoilers for the first episode of the "King of the Hill" revival, which is now streaming on Hulu.

Mike Judge's family sitcom "King of the Hill" was a near-perfect slice of animated Americana that showed audiences a sweet and silly side of Texas that felt like home, even if you'd never been there. It's sadly been more than 15 years since we last got to spend time with the Hill family and their neighbors on Rainey Street, but the new Hulu revival aims to give fans that same comforting feeling all over again (with a few fresh updates). Instead of just trying to continue where things left off, the show is essentially picking up in real-time, with pre-teen son Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon) now in his early 20s. Similarly, Hank (Judge) and Peggy (Kathy Najimy) have been away for several years saving up a nest egg for retirement,...

King of the Hill Season 14: Everything You Need to Know About the Legendary Revival (And Where to Watch!)
Bill Skarsgård and Jackson Robert Scott in It (2017)
Dust off your propane tanks, folks—King of the Hill Season 14 has officially brought Arlen, Texas, back to TV, and fans old and new are in for one heck of a treat. After more than 15 years off-air, the beloved animated series has returned, promising big laughs, classic Hill family antics, and a nostalgia bomb that hits just right. If you’ve been wondering when it’s out, what’s changed, and where to stream it, you’re in the right place.

King of the Hill Season 14: What’s It About and What’s New?

The iconic Mike Judge and Greg Daniels comedy picks up with the Hill clan and their (questionably) wise neighbors navigating a new era in Arlen. While the classic vibe remains—Hank’s mild-mannered wisdom, Bobby’s quirks, Peggy’s oblivious confidence—Season 14 isn’t just about reliving the old days. The writers cleverly weave in modern themes and self-aware jokes,...

Does Nancy Love Dale? ‘King of the Hill’s Ashley Gardner Weighs In
Image
For the first several seasons of King of the Hill’s original run, Dale Gribble’s wife Nancy was having an affair with her masseuse John Redcorn. It was also clear to everyone but Dale that his son Joseph wasn’t his own. In the show’s fourth season, however, Nancy’s relationship with Redcorn came to an end.

That said, from what we’ve seen of Hulu’s King of the Hill revival so far, it seems Nancy may have gone back to John Redcorn, as suggested by a shot from the opening sequence of her getting into his Jeep.

Given that we’re just 24 hours away from said revival, I reached out to the woman who voices Nancy, Ashley Gardner, to ask if she thinks Nancy loves Dale or not and what it was like working with the man who played him, the late Johnny Hardwick.

How did...

King of the Hill Team Explains Why Hulu’s Revival Aged Up Its Characters (and What’s Staying the Same)
Image
Hulu is bringing back the animated classic King of the Hill — and it may look a little different than you remember.

Unlike The Simpsons, where Bart remains a grade-school prankster forever, King of the Hill decided to age up its characters for Hulu’s revival — premiering Monday, Aug. 4 — with Hank and Peggy’s son Bobby all grown up and Hank’s friend Boomhauer sporting a few new wrinkles. (The original Fox run wrapped up back in 2009.) So why did they decide to bring the good people of Arlen into the future?

‘King of the Hill’ Review: Hank, Peggy and Bobby Move to Hulu for Season 14 Without Skipping a Beat
Image
It isn’t easy to comedically turn the clock back to the 1990s. Just ask Happy Gilmore 2, a formless, two-hour blob of Adam Sandler’s family and celebrity friends, with no real creative drive to speak of.

But for several beloved animated shows, what had seemed so difficult for Sandler and company has been made to look relatively easy. Both Beavis and Butt-Head and Futurama, two series that premiered in the late ’90s and have earned multiple resurrections, made smooth transitions to a new era of television and will be premiering new seasons in September. I liked both shows originally, and like both revivals.

Returning first, though, is King of the Hill, which aired from 1997 to 2009. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ Texas-set slice of life, which always seemed right on the edge of going full dramedy in a broadcast landscape that required an exclusive dedication to laughs, ran 250-plus episodes,...

‘King of the Hill’s Toby Huss on Taking Over the Voice of Dale and Saying Goodbye to Kahn
Image
When Johnny Hardwick, who voiced King of the Hill’s lovable conspiracy theorist Dale Gribble, died in August 2023, fans couldn’t help but wonder what that meant for the then-recently announced Koth revival. Would Dale, one of the core characters, be killed off? Would he be recast?

Two years later, they finally got their answer when Variety reported that Toby Huss would be taking over the character.

In the original series, Huss provided the voices for Hank Hill’s neighbor Kahn Souphanousinphone, Hank’s father Cotton Hill and Hank’s co-worker Joe Jack. With Hank’s retirement and Cotton’s death in Season 12, it’s unclear if Huss will ever play those latter two roles again, but it’s been confirmed that he will not reprise the role of Kahn, as it was decided that the Laotian character should be played by an Asian actor. And so, The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng,...

King of the Hill Season 14 Review — The Glorious Return of Texas’s First Family
Image
While the reboot idea for ’90s and 2000s pop culture is already played out, there are some exceptions that come back as if they never went away. King of the Hill decided against coming back exactly as it was, allowing the series to age as if he had been away for nine years. The result is a more mature show that digs into the world as it is in 2025, while also exploring new dynamics between the Hills and their Arlen neighbors. While some shows have found a rocky reception upon their return, King of the Hill feels fresh and insightful in ways only this series ever could.

How a ‘King of the Hill’ Revival Brings Hank, Bobby, and Dale Into an America Gone Mad
Image
For 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009, Hank Hill, the hero of the classic Fox animated comedy King of the Hill, existed at a precarious middle point of American culture. In some episodes, his fixation on old-fashioned values made him come across as the most repressed, clueless old man in the world. In others, it was clear that many of the things Hank stood for — particularly the importance of hard work, and of treating other people with respect and decency — were being dismissed far too easily by a rapidly-changing culture.

This was all by design.

King of the Hill Showrunner Clarifies Lucky and Luanne's Status in Hulu Revival
Image
King of the Hill fans are heading back to Arlen after 15 years, as the hit animated series has been revived. An all-new season is set to drop on Hulu for a streaming release on Aug. 4, 2025.

Sadly, some members of the King of the Hill family have since passed away. This includes Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty, who respectively voiced Luanne and Lucky. It had been unclear if the characters would be featured in the revival, and fans were wondering if the two might come back with new voice actors in the roles. In a recent interview with IGN to promote the revival, showrunner Saladin Patterson confirmed that Lucky and Luanne weren't recast, as that just wouldn't have felt right.

"The analogy I use as a sports fan is, sometimes the best way to honor someone's work is to hang their jersey up in the rafters as a show of respect...

King of the Hill Returns With 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score: 'Best Revival That Has Ever Been Made'
Image
After 15 years, King of the Hill is back with all-new episodes. A revival of the animated show is debuting on Hulu on Aug. 4, and days ahead of launch, early reviews from critics have declared the new King of the Hill to be a hit.

As of this writing, the revival, which essentially serves as the 14th season of King of the Hill, holds a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Potentially, the number will drop when more reviews come in, but debuting with a rare perfect score is certainly an incredible start. Critics are praising the revival for bringing something new to King of the Hill while maintaining the classic charm of the original show.

"It's the rare revival that is able to age its characters and modernize the world, but still feel like the dang ol' king," as Collider critic Nate Richard put it.

King Of The Hill Season 14 Made One Big Change From The Original Show That "Hulu May Have Made Us Go Back" To Fix

King of the Hillseason 14 will include one big change from the animated comedy's original run. The revived King of the Hill will finally debut on August 4 on Disney and Disney+ with Hulu, and all episodes will be available to stream on that date. Several voice actors reprise their roles, including Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy, and Pamela Adlon.

But despite the returning voice cast, not everything about the new King of the Hill will be the same. Executive producer and showrunner Saladin Patterson revealed to IGNthat there will be more cursing. Patterson, who executive produces alongside series co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, talks in the quote below about being advised by Hulu to include fewer swear words:

I mean, we certainly talked about that creatively. How much do we want to push it? And it was all about staying within the tone and character of the original show and the characters themselves.

‘King of the Hill’s Toby Huss Reveals How He Plans on Living Up to Johnny Hardwick’s Dale Gribble
Image
We may all be familiar with King of the Hill’s Dale Gribble, but embodying the pocket-sand-throwing, Manitoba-smoking spirit of Arlen’s most famous conspiracy theorist is no easy task.

During the King of the Hill panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, voice actor Toby Huss got candid about the challenge of taking on the late Johnny Hardwick’s iconic role in the show’s upcoming revival, revealing that no one did it quite like his former co-star. “I’m not going to improve on what Johnny did,” Huss explained when asked about his approach to Dale, per IGN. “But I hope he approves of it.”

Ahead of the show’s 14th season, which is set to hit Hulu on August 4th, it was announced that Huss, who voiced several characters, including Cotton Hill and Kahn Souphanousinphone during the show’s original run, would continue the role of Dale...

King of the Hill Showrunner Explains Increased Diversity and Recasting Roles: 'The World Has Changed'
Image
King of the Hill is making a return to the small screen after a 15-year hiatus, but the new episodes will come with a shakeup in the cast. This includes adding more diverse characters in the revival while recasting multiple characters.

These changes were discussed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Per Entertainment Weekly, the panel was attended by series co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels alongside voice actors Pamela Adlon (Bobby), Lauren Tom (Connie), Toby Huss (Dale), and Kathy Najimy (Peggy). Showrunner Saladin K. Patterson was also present, and he explained how the revival is comparatively more diverse given how times have changed since 2010.

"It was important in the show, the world has changed a little bit since Hank and Peggy have been gone," Patterson noted. "Casting has changed a little bit too since Hank and Peggy have been gone, as far as, actors fit the characters that they're portraying.

Image
It's been nearly 16 years since "King of the Hill" originally went off the air but in the streaming era, everything old is new again. That being the case, Hulu has resurrected Mike Judge's beloved animated series about Hank Hill and the Hill family who reside in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. Get ready to see an adult Bobby Hill, a retired Hank and Peggy, and oh so much more.

The original series aired for a whopping 14 seasons on Fox from 1997 to 2009, becoming a staple of the network's animation block right alongside "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy." Now, the show is headed to the world of streaming for a new series of adventures. For those who are looking forward to the show's return, we're here to give you everything you need to know about the "King of the Hill" reboot, from when you'll be able to watch it, what it's all about,...

‘King of the Hill’ Revival Plans On-Screen Tributes to Late Stars Johnny Hardwick, Jonathan Joss
Image
“King of the Hill” is planning to pay tribute to late cast members Johnny Hardwick and Jonathan Joss via memoriam cards that will run during episodes of the show’s upcoming revival on Hulu. Both Hardwick and Joss appear on Season 14 of the show, having voiced their characters before their deaths.

“King of the Hill’s” executive producers revealed these tributes on Friday during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel. The producers also shared a bit more about how they’re referencing the characters of Luanne and Lucky – voiced by the late Brittany Murphy and rock star Tom Petty – both of whom passed before the recent revival. And they noted the passing this week of musician Chuck Mangione, another “King of the Hill” staple.

Hulu

The Hardwick tribute (above) had previously been announced during the show’s panel last month at the Atx Television Festival in Austin. During that event,...

‘King of the Hill’ Season 14 Review: Hulu’s Comforting Revival Avoids the Politics at Its Core
Image
“The Simpsons” really did alter TV history forever: Three of the top seven longest-running scripted primetime series of all time are currently animated shows, including that Matt Groening trailblazer. Several more are poised to join their ranks if they stay on the air for a few more seasons. It makes sense that these shows stick around, with even non-megahits like “Futurama” approaching an episode total rivaling a smash like “Seinfeld”; after all, cartoon characters can remain recognizably themselves forever, while it can take decades or more before any audible signs of aging creep into vocal performances.

So it’s particularly and perhaps uncharacteristically bold that “King of the Hill,” Mike Judge’s animated sitcom that aired for 13 seasons on Fox, returns not exactly as fans left it back in 2009. (A few additional unaired episodes premiered in 2010.)

It’s especially notable, even faintly moving, that as the show is revived for a 10-episode 14th season,...

Dave Nemetz Reviews King of the Hill: Yup, Hulu’s Revival Has Aged a Bit, But Still Delivers Texas-Sized Laughs
Image
Like Hank Hill, I’m naturally skeptical of anything new. So I was a bit worried when Hulu announced they’re bringing back the animated comedy King of the Hill for new episodes — only because the original Fox run was so impeccable, and I’d hate for anything to taint that. Then I got more worried when I learned the new King of the Hill would be set years later, with a grown-up Bobby Hill (!). Is nothing sacred? (Please hear that in Bobby Hill’s voice, and giggle along with me.)

But I shouldn’t have worried: Hulu’s new...

The Season Premiere of ‘King of the Hill’ Revival Will Disappoint. But the Rest of the Season Certainly Won’t
Image
Unlike Full House (three dads) or Perfect Strangers (wacky foreigner) or Dinosaurs (dinosaurs), King of the Hill has a simple premise — maybe the simplest comedy premise of the past several decades. Hank (voice of series co-creator Mike Judge) and Peggy (Kathy Najimy) raise their son Bobby (Pamela Adlon); Hank’s main social life consists of standing in the alley behind his house drinking beer with his neighbors.

But anyone who knows the show at all knows I left out extremely salient details. Hank clashes with Bobby because Hank is a determinedly “normal” man, and Bobby’s artistic pursuits — comedy, cooking — confuses and alarms his father, eliciting Hank’s refrain, “That boy ain’t right.” Hank’s neighbors include one paranoid conspiracy theorist, and one man whose lazily enunciated accent makes him nearly incomprehensible. Hank doesn’t just drink beer, he drinks Alamo. King of the Hill isn’t just a family sitcom,...

‘King of the Hill’ Revival Keeps Up with the Times, for Better and for Worse: TV Review
Image
Animation feels insulated from many of the obstacles that face nostalgia-driven revivals. The actors don’t visibly age, thereby reminding the audience of time’s passage; the characters themselves often exist in a temporal bubble, where Bart Simpson is forever in fourth grade and Bikini Bottom remains on the ocean floor. You can’t go home again, the saying goes, but when Hank and Peggy Hill (Mike Judge and Kathy Najimy) return to Arlen, Texas, it’s easier and less uncanny to follow them there than, say, Dexter Morgan to New York City.

Their namesake sitcom can, for example, lightly fudge its timeline. “King of the Hill,” co-created by Judge and future “The Office” czar Greg Daniels, has been off the air for 15 years. But when the Hills come back from their stint in Saudi Arabia — a country whose name Peggy, forever confident in her nonexistent language skills, cannot pronounce...

‘King of the Hill’ Won’t Be Recasting Luanne Platter or Lucky Kleinschmidt
Image
King of the Hill will look a lot different after a 15-year hiatus. Mega Lo Mart has drones, and Bobby is now a 21-year-old chef who cooks up gourmet German-Japanese cuisine. Along with these major adjustments, fans also will have to accept a conspicuous lack of Luanne Platter.

Luanne was voiced by the late Brittany Murphy, who passed away just three months after King of the Hill’s series finale hit airwaves in 2009, while her husband, Lucky Kleinschmidt, was played by late rocker Tom Petty, who died in 2017. With the Season 14 premiere around the corner, fans have been wondering how the show plans on addressing these characters, who served as series staples throughout the initial run.

It remains unclear what presence, if any, these existing characters will have in the show, but it’s safe to say that we won’t be getting a Manger Babies reboot, as IndieWire has...

Chuck Mangione, Jazz Musician and King of the Hill Fan Favorite, Dies at 84
Image
Famed musician Chuck Mangione, who was also a fan favorite guest star on King of the Hill, has died. He was 84 years old.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mangione died at his home in Rochester, New York, on Tuesday. While an exact cause of death isn't yet known, the musician reportedly died in his sleep. His attorney, Belock Levine & Hoffman Llp's Peter S. Matorin, confirmed Mangione's passing.

Mangione rose to prominence in music as a member of Art Blakley's band in the 60s before forming the Jazz Brothers alongside brother Gap. As he rose in the world of music, he found major success in 1978 with the release of his single "Feels So Good." The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release, and the album was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Mangione's "Give It All You Got" also served as the theme to...

King of the Hill Fans Get a Bummer as 1 Fan Favorite Star Won't Be Appearing in Hulu's Revival
Image
It was reported after the publishing of this story that Chuck Mangione died this week at the age of 84.

Hulu is bringing back King of the Hill with an all-new season, but there are going to be some big changes. Notably, the revival moves the story forward by 15 years, picking up with much older versions of returning characters. Many fan favorites have been confirmed to appear in early teasers and trailers, though one popular guest star from the original is not expected to be involved, at least for now.

In the classic King of the Hill, real-life musician Chuck Mangione appeared semi-regularly as one of the most popular guest stars. Because of this, some fans may wonder if the Hill family will reunite with Mangione in one of the revival's new episodes. However, TVLine quotes a source involved with the new series as stating, "He's not in Season 14, but we'll see what the future brings.

‘King of the Hill’ Announces Guest Stars, Recasting for Upcoming Hulu Revival
Image
Earlier this month, Hulu announced that the upcoming “King of the Hill” revival will see Ronny Chieng take over the recurring guest role of Kahn Souphanousinphone from the show’s original run. The decision meant that the Asian character, previously one of several parts voiced by Toby Huss, would be voiced by an Asian performer for the first time.

Now, IndieWire can exclusively reveal five new guest stars for the show’s long-awaited 14th season, several of which are similar recastings of old recurring characters with actors of color. In addition, Keith David and Anthony “Citric” Campos have joined the series as new characters.

David will play new character Brian Robertson, who rented the house of main character Hank (series co-creator Mike Judge) in between the events of the show’s original seasons and the revival, and integrates into Hank’s friend group. Campos will play Emilio, a chef at...

How King Of The Hill's Revival Continued Production After The Death Of Two Actors Explained By Returning Star
Image
A few of the original cast members of King of the Hill have passed away in recent years, but Stephen Root (Bill Dauterive) explained how the upcoming revival persevered without them. After nearly 16 years, a revival of King of the Hill is nearly out with a premiere date of August 4. Unfortunately, three of the show's original actors - Johnny Hardwick (Dale Gribble), Brittany Murphy (Luanne) and Jonathan Joss (John Redcorn) - passed away before the revival could air.

During an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns for Resident Alien season 4, Stephen Root spoke about King of the Hill season 14 and the passing of Murphy, Hardwick, and Joss. Root mentioned that though some of the cast members of King of the Hill have passed away, the revival still felt like family affair.

Well, it was really easy to step back into that character, because I think Bill is now part...

A New Trailer For Hulu's King Of The Hill Revival Reveals That Arlen Has Changed But Hank Is Still The Same
Image
The latest trailer for the King of the Hill revival offers a hilarious glimpse at what fans can expect from the long-awaited 14th season. The footage reveals that Bobby Hill is now working as a chef at a hibachi restaurant and dating a vegan girlfriend.

Meanwhile, Bill has fallen into a deep depression during Hank’s time away, and Hank himself has officially retired from Strickland Propane.

In earlier announcements, Hulu revealed that Hank and Peggy had moved to Saudi Arabia so Hank could take a high-paying contracting job to build their retirement savings. Now that they’re back in the U.S., Hank isn’t returning to work, he’s fully retired and adjusting to his new life.

As for Bobby and Connie, it looks like they’ve chosen to stay just friends. The trailer hints at Bobby’s love life taking a new turn, as he shares some...

King of the Hill Revival Recasts Another Fan-Favorite Character From Original Series
Image
The new King of the Hill is coming to Hulu this summer, picking up 15 years after fans last saw the Hill family. Several stars from the original show are back on board to reprise their roles, though some characters will be having new actors voicing them.

Per Variety, comedian Ronny Chieng, best known for serving as a correspondent for The Daily Show on Comedy Central, has joined the King of the Hill revival. He is voicing the role of Kahn Souphanousinphone, serving as a recurring guest star. Toby Huss originally voiced Kahn in the original King of the Hill, but it was expected that the character would be recast for the revival, given the increased scrutiny in recent years over white actors portraying non-white characters in movies and TV shows.

Huss is still involved with the revival, however. After the death of Dale Gribble's voice actor, Johnny Hardwick, it was...

No One Is Sure Who’s Voicing Dale in the New ‘King of the Hill’ Trailer
Image
King of the Hill fans are thrilled to see Rainey Street’s cast of familiar, aged-up faces in Hulu’s new Season 14 trailer, but the absence of Dale Gribble’s distinct vocal stylings left some fans wielding conspiracy theories of their own.

Though the teaser has garnered generally positive reviews — “It feels so good to hear Hank threatening to kick someone’s ass for the first time in 15 years, even if it’s over Zoom,” one Redditor wrote — several people had questions about Dale’s new sound. Does it emanate from the late Johnny Hardwick, who died during recording? Or did it come from his replacement, Toby Huss?

Hardwick, who had voiced Arlen’s resident conspiracy theorist throughout the show’s initial 13-season run, passed away in 2023, shortly after the series’ revival had been announced. He completed six episodes before his death, with the role ultimately going to Huss, who previously voiced Hank’s father,...

After 15 years, King of the Hill is returning for a long-awaited 14th season — and the fictional suburb of Arlen, Texas, has had some big changes. King Of The Hill Revival Officially Recasts Og Character After 28 Years
Image
After 28 years, the upcoming revival of King of the Hill has recast one of the show's original voice actors. Several of the original show's voice actors couldn't return for the upcoming King of the Hill revival. Johnny Hardwick (Dale), for example, sadly passed away in 2023, before he could record lines. Given Dale's importance to the show, Toby Huss was brought in to play him.

Now, Disney has confirmed that one original King of the Hill character won't be voiced by his original voice actor. Toby Huss, who originally voiced Kahn Souphanousinphone, has been replaced by Ronny Chieng. Chieng is known for movies like Crazy Rich Asians and M3GAN. Huss is still tied to King of the Hill, as he's set to voice Dale.

The decision to recast Kahn is a simple result of changing times. Huss is a white man, while Kahn is a first-generation Laotian immigrant. King of the Hill...
