The event, which will be open to TV Academy members and non-members, and will run Aug. 14-16 at the Jw Marriott at L.A. ‘Queer as Folk’ Star: People Forget “All the F***ing Time” How Series Paved Way for TV’s Golden Age
Image
To close out a lively and, at times, heartfelt Q&a featuring a handful of actors and the key creative team responsible for Showtime’s Queer as Folk, moderator Frank DeCaro asked the panelists the night’s most profound question timed to the milestone anniversary: “Looking back over the last 25 years, what influence do you think Queer As Folk had on television and the world?”

Without missing a beat, Peter Paige, who starred as the flamboyant and beloved character Emmett Honeycutt, said, “Give me that goddamn microphone,” a demand that telegraphed a powerful statement was about to be dropped.

“I don’t think Queer as Folk gets nearly enough credit for being at the forefront of the golden age of television, and I mean that 100 percent,” said Paige, who graduated from the show to become a successful TV creator, writer and producer (The Fosters, Good Trouble). “Adding complicated, sexualized adult...

12 Best LGBTQ+ Shows To Watch During Pride Month
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the last couple of decades, LGBTQ+ characters have become more and more common on television, though this history goes further back than you might think. As Shayna Maci Warner writes in "The Rainbow Age of Television," The first "expressly named gay character" appeared on the first episode of "N.Y.P.D." in 1967. Meanwhile, the first lesbian couple appeared on "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors" in 1972, though the first lesbian kiss on TV didn't occur until 1991 in an episode of "L.A. Law."

Queer representation has increased greatly since then, though GLAAD's 2023-2024 Where We Are On TV report indicates that there has been a decrease in LGBTQ+ characters in the last few years. Thankfully, many queer-centric shows from years past are available to stream (apart from the ones that have been pulled from streaming), meaning we still have a significant...

7 Canceled Teen Fantasy Shows That Still Haunt Fans Today
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If you still remember teen fantasy shows like The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale that went on for far too long, even after their stories had no steam left, but you might not remember the shows in this list, as they had so much more story to tell, but they were canceled way too soon. Teen fantasy shows were all the rage in the 2010s and that’s why there were so many of them but most of them didn’t hit as hard as The Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf, but that doesn’t mean that the shows that were canceled were not as good or even better then these two shows. That’s the reason why we decided to compile a list of seven great (or underrated) teen fantasy shows that had great potential but were canceled way too soon.

I'll Never Forgive The CW For Canceling Its Best Vampire Diaries Replacement
Image
The CW missed a big opportunity with "The Secret Circle" as a potential replacement for "The Vampire Diaries." Consistency is key for new shows to succeed, but "The Secret Circle" faced hiatuses that hurt its momentum. With captivating visuals and exciting storylines, "The Secret Circle" had the potential to surpass "The Vampire Diaries."

The Vampire Diaries was a massive hit for The CW, but I'll never forget the network's controversial decision to cancel its best replacement. The series in question had a fantastic cast comprising well-known names and newer actors, who all came together to craft a great show. For much of the time this series was on the air, it was better than The Vampire Diaries. Both shows had many of the same people working behind the scenes, so it felt like The CW wanted to replicate the popularity of The Vampire Diaries.

It's a shame it didn't get a big enough chance.

1 Show, 3 Networks, 8 Seasons: ‘Queer as Folk’ Canceled
Image
Peacock’s “Queer as Folk” reboot has officially come to an end.

The show, which premiered in June and reimagined the landmark gay series in New Orleans, was created by Russell T. Davies and Stephen Dunn. It starred Devin Way, Fin Argus, Jesse James Keitel, CG, Johnny Sibilly, and Ryan O’Connell and had been praised for featuring a much more diverse cast than previous takes on the property. The unapologetically political reboot was also noteworthy for taking on contemporary issues facing the gay community, such as mass shootings at gay bars (survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando served as consultants).

Dunn took to social media to break the news of its cancellation on Friday night.

“It’s a rare gift in these times, and in this country, to be able to make a show as fearless and unapologetic as ‘Queer As Folk,'” Dunn wrote in an Instagram caption.

Roadside Attractions Takes U.S. Rights For Rachel Lears’ Doc ‘To The End’, Sets Theatrical Release
Image
Roadside Attractions has taken domestic rights for To The End, the follow-up film from Rachel Lears (Knock Down The House), and set a Dec. 9 theatrical-only release date.

The deal was announced by Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. The film, which premiered at Sundance, covers three years of both hope and crisis leading to the recent, historic passage of landmark climate legislation — The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

It focuses on four exceptional women, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, on the front lines of climate policy and advocacy with up-to-the-minute material.

“We are thrilled to be releasing To The End, said Roadside VP of Acquisitions Angel An. “These are the people, four young women from diverse backgrounds, often left out of the political deal-making narrative. Yet this film makes clear how these committed activists have worked to shift the narrative on climate that led to the [Act’s] passage.”

“We always wanted this immersive...

Queer as Folk Reboot Adapts Legacies Rather Than Classic Characters
Image
Peacock’s recent Queer as Folk reboot is the third rendition of the ground-breaking LGBTQ+ centered franchise. The original Queer as Folk, created by Russel T Davies, debuted in the UK in 1999 and ran for two seasons. As one of the first serial dramas centered on gay characters, the show is a landmark for queer televisual representation. Even more significantly, the original series is confrontational, provocative, and unapologetic, refusing to depict a version of queerness that would make non-queer audiences comfortable. An American adaptation quickly followed on Showtime, running for five seasons from 2000-2005. Though Showtime’s adaptation features a far greater number of characters and storylines — there are eight times the number of episodes as the British series — the primary characters and plots are based on Davies’ series. Most of the characters have different names; Stuart Alan Jones (Aidan Gillen) becomes Brian Kinney (Gale Harold), Vince Taylor (Craig Kelly...

‘Borat’ Breakout Maria Bakalova Joins Sofia Coppola-Produced ‘Fairyland’ And Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart Pic ‘Unfrosted’ For Netflix
Image
Exclusive: Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has joined the casts of Andrew Durham’s feature directorial debut Fairyland for American Zoetrope, and Jerry Seinfeld’s first film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story for Netflix. Details as to the roles she’ll be playing in the features have not been disclosed, though we hear she’ll only be making a cameo in the latter.

Fairyland is a father-daughter coming-of-age story that Durham adapted from Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. The book originally published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2012 is set against San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene of the 1970s and ’80s, both before and after the AIDS epidemic — a crisis that would ultimately claim the life of Abbott’s father, the widowed poet and gay activist, Steve Abbott. Bakalova joins an ensemble led by Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy, which also includes Geena Davis, Cody Fern,...

Watch: Alec Baldwin in Trailer for Sci-Fi 'Andròn - The Black Labyrinth'
"All this is Andròn - the quest for the contenders." The first trailer has debuted for an interesting sci-fi film called Andròn - The Black Labyrinth, or just Andron. It's about a dark, claustrophobic maze being run by Alec Baldwin, who broadcasts the fights of the various contenders hoping to survive. This seems like some weird mash-up of Cube and The Hunger Games, with a dose of The Maze Runner because of course. The ensemble cast includes Michelle Ryan, Danny Glover, Leo Howard, Gale Harold, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Gaia Scodellaro and Margareth Madè. There are some cool moments in this (the opening looks great) but I'm not sure if it'll be any good, especially with such a low IMDb rating. Fire it up. Here's the first trailer for Francesco Cinquemani's Andròn - The Black Labyrinth, found on YouTube: A group of people are plunged into a dark, claustrophobic maze, where they must fight to survive,...

Alec Baldwin Goes Evil In "Andron" Trailer
With the success of "The Hunger Games" and "The Maze Runner" franchises, there's inevitable low-budget films trying to copy that style - one of which is Italian filmmaker Francesco Cinquemani's UK sci-fi film "Andron - The Black Labyrinth". Today, the trailer for it has dropped.

Alec Baldwin is the President Snow of this particular film, one in which a group of people are plunged into a dark, claustrophobic maze, where they must fight to survive as the outside world watches. Michelle Ryan, Danny Glover, Leo Howard, Gale Harold, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Gaia Scodellaro and Margareth Made also star in the film which hasn't set a release date as yet.

Danny Glover Joins Alec Baldwin For Sci-Fi Flick Andron — The Black Labyrinth
One of the most notable Hollywood trends of late is the way in which studios have gravitated towards dystopian stories situated within an all-encompassing battle arena. From The Hunger Games to the soon-to-be-released The Maze Runner, it appears as though these productions are channeling a barbaric spectatorship that harkens back to the Roman Empire and the blood-drenched days of the Colosseum.

And the latest project to venture into such a genre is Francesco Cinquemani’s directorial debut, Andron — The Black Labyrinth, which recently added Danny Glover and Alec Baldwin to its cast.

Speaking of the core concept behind the upcoming sci-fi adventure, Andrew Iervolino, Ambi Pictures Group’s producer — the company behind the film — stated that recruiting the likes of Glover and Baldwin only elevate the production to new heights.

“The story of Andron is enough to excite sci-fi fans worldwide but when you add actors like Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover,...

Conversation with Melanie Griffith, Rachel McDonald and Gale Harold at the Locarno International Film Festival
On a sunny afternoon in Locarno on 7 August, Boyd van Hoeij from Variety moderated a discussion with short film "Thirst" director Rachel McDonald and its stars Melanie Griffith and Gale Harold. The topics ranged from the making of McDonald’s film, to the actors’ takes on the differences between working with men and female directors, to ageism in Hollywood.

I asked Rachel McDonald about using crowd-sourcing to fund "Thirst".

Rachel McDonald : “We shot a teaser and put it on Kickstarter. I learned a lot about social media in a short period of time. We raised the money in two different rounds and were able to do the shoot. I was overwhelmed by the generosity and people who had faith in us. There are two donors here in the audience today; they drove three-hours from Italy today to be here! I think crowd-sourcing is amazing and people can be a part of telling a story in a different way.”

About Thirst

Rachel McDonald : "Thirst’s" themes are about compassion and about the human connection. There are definitely themes of mercy that reflect on ourselves and on each other. Sometimes that comes in the form of a complete stranger or those already in our lives. With an undercurrent of addiction.”

Melanie Griffith: “My character, Sue, is a down-and-out alcoholic. And this young man comes into her life and they have this sort of understanding and go through a metamorphous together. And Rachel, I must say was an incredible director and allowed what happened without the words, to happen in this world. I’m here because I love the film. I want to support her in many more movies.”

Gale Harold : “My character, “John” comes in about halfway through film; he has an oracle quality, he’s saying things he doesn’t have reason to know about and makes offhand statements that become echoed through the film.”

McDonald: “The movie takes place over a period of three days. The script, written by Michael Albanese, was inspired by a true story that happened to him when he was living in New York City in the 90s, and was broke and disconnected, and got a temporary job in Hell’s Kitchen. We developed the story together.”

Boyd: “You had a screenplay and a great story, but how do you get Melanie Griffith in this movie?”

McDonald : “We are very fortunate to have an amazing cast. We were working with a wonderful casting director and talking to her about the project and she recommended Melanie. Michael Albanese and I wrote an impassioned letter and sent it to her with the script, and she invited us over to her home so generously and we connected instantly.”

Boyd: “What made the script stand out?”

Griffith: “It was the letter, the story, reading the script and meeting Rachel; this made me want to do it. I thought it was a great challenge to play an alcoholic since I am a recovering alcoholic, and it was a good way to get it out of my mind, my psyche. When I met Rachel, I saw something in her eyes that was familiar to me, like meeting a person you’ve known before.”

On Directing

McDonald: “I create a place the actors feel safe and where they can go to vulnerable places and in this story specifically they did so bravely. I’m a very visual storyteller, so I’m prepared with my shot list and what I want to achieve, and help bring the story to life.”

Boyd: “Obviously, Rachel is a female filmmaker. Is there a difference between a male and female director?”

Harold: “I think women and men filmmakers do bring a different perspective. Males can be emotionally-driven as well; some women are more driven though. It’s a different perspective when women and men tell a story.”

Griffith: “There are men who are sensitive with guiding an actor…they are few and far between. I do seem to be gravitating towards more female directors. I feel like -- men directors are amazing though -- with Rachel (and other female directors) they’ll look at a scene or a movie, and say, ‘I feel that the character would be doing this’ while a male director generally says, “I think the character would be doing this.”

Griffith then remarks on the overall disparity of women working in the film industry. “Only a small percent of women, maybe ten percent, are working in the industry. Considering more than half the planet are female – that’s not a good percentage!”

Boyd : “Melanie, you have nothing left to prove as an actor.”

Griffith : “I do have a lot left to prove. I always think if ‘Oh my God, can I do this role?’ It’s beautiful when you do it and make it work.”

Boyd: “Obviously you’re a daughter of a famous actor and your daughter is in "50 Shades of Gray".”

Griffith : “I think that Dakota is going to be better than me and my mom. She is amazing. She watched all the mistakes I’ve made and the things that happened to my mom. She’s a force of nature. I won’t see "50 Shades of Gray;" her father and I agreed we’ll just read the reviews.”

The Conversation concludes with an audience member asking about roles for women in Hollywood as they get older.

Griffith : “When you hit 40 it’s iffy. I did take a lot of time off to raise my kids, and now I’m doing a lot of work and have a couple of movies to shoot. I’m doing Pippin on Broadway in January. I now only have one child at home who will be a senior in high school and then I’m free. And I’m going to do whatever the fuck I want to do!”

Defiance season 2 episode 5 review: Put The Damage On
While no single episode of Defiance has been outstanding so far this season, the seeds are being satisfyingly sown for its future...

Review

This review contains spoilers.

2.5 Put The Damage On

There were lots of things to like in this episode, not least the major part played by Doc Yewll, one of Defiance's more interesting characters.

So far I’ve not been a big fan of the subplot where Amanda becomes a drug addict, but here it found a place to thrive, when she started to imagine that the man who raped her had come back to terrorise her. This coincides with the reappearance of an old flame of the Doc’s, and while these two things seem at the time entirely unrelated, they’re actually importantly connected.

In retrospect, you’re given a number of important clues about the reality of Amanda’s encounter with the past in that sequence.
