Gaal Dornick and Demerzel are two central characters in Apple TV+’s Foundation. In the final moments of Foundation season 3 episode 5 titled, Where Tyrants Spend Eternity, Gaal and Demerzel finally meet, with the latter saying, “It has been more than 300 years. You are looking well.” While it’s a great scene to leave the episode on, their meeting comes at a time when it’s not a battle between good vs evil anymore. The two characters are now different sides of the same coin.
Watching two characters, one on the side of the Empire and the other on the side of the Foundation, meet is always bound to be electric. Just like it was watching Lee Pace‘s Brother Day and Jared Harris‘s Hari Seldon in the initial episodes of season 1. But back then, the two men were on opposite sides of the spectrum. One was a tyrant, and...

After 30 years, “Nadja” will return to theaters — this time with a 4K director’s cut to showcase Michael Almereyda’s original vision for the cult vampire film. “Nadja,” executive produced by late auteur David Lynch (who also has a cameo in the film), first debuted at the 1994 Toronto International Film Festival. Now, the 4K restoration of the feature will premiere at TIFF 2025.
IndieWire can announce that Grasshopper Film and Arbelos will be distributing “Nadja” in 4K. Grasshopper Film and Arbelos acquired the international distribution rights for the new version and will release it in North American theaters in late 2025, followed by a release on streaming platforms.
“Nadja” blends André Breton’s surrealist 1928 novel of the same name with 1936 film “Dracula’s Daughter.” Elina Löwensohn stars as the titular young vampire who returns to NYC to avenge her father’s death at the hands of Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Fonda). Jared Harris,...

All episodes of any given TV show, no matter what genre or what story they are telling, revolve around a single theme that changes every week but is still relevant to the overall message. And that’s exactly what happens in “The Stress of Her Regard,” the fourth episode of Foundation’s third season—it’s all about escaping. This includes the desire to escape, both physically and metaphorically, and the plans to do so, whether they are successful or not.
The episode actually starts with a dream of escaping, even though the character who dreams it hasn’t realized it yet—or better yet, doesn’t allow herself to. Demerzel is shown in the opening scene of “The Stress of Her Regard” deep in conversation with the Luminist Zephyr she has called to Trantor specifically to hear her confessions and her woes. She goes through all the interventions she...

The most special thing about Apple TV+ and its embrace of science fiction isn't the surprisingly broad swath of content available to fans. It's that the service is willing to go back to the era when shows needed time to build their audience, and to really hit their stride. "Foundation" is the herald. It's not just a smart adaptation of an Isaac Asimov series so broad and deep in scope that fans thought it would be impossible to film (especially with its complicated relationship with Asimov's "Robot" novels), but Apple let it keep building up toward a fantastic third season that shows the potential of its author's imagination.
Cerebral, clever, and incredibly well cast, with "Chernobyl" star Jared Harris and the underrated Lee Pace of "The Fall" and "Pushing Daisies" fame, the show puts it all out there for fans to puzzle over, creating a space for fans to crave...

Please respect and enjoy the peace. This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Foundation."
It was hiding in plain sight the whole time. "Foundation" season 3 might be the show's most audacious chapter yet, paying off the long-simmering tease of the villainous Mule (Pilou Asbæk) and rushing headlong into the final few months of the Cleonic Dynasty's reign over the galaxy. Those who don't pay attention to their psychohistory are doomed to fall victim to it, to paraphrase a certain scientist/doomsday prophet named Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), and we're finally witnessing the chickens coming home to roost after centuries of Empire pretending that nothing was wrong. All of these seeds were planted as early as the very first episode of the Apple TV+ series back in 2021 ... as was the individual secretly responsible for setting this grand plan into motion in the first place.
Say it with me, folks: It was Demerzel all along.

Foundation Season 3 episode 2 showed Jared Harris’s Hari Seldon’s “death” due to old age. However, we know that there are digital copies of his consciousness remaining in the Vault and the Prime Radiant. There have also been mentions of the ascendence of the Vault’s Hari Seldon, although that’s something we have yet to see in the show. As such, there’s a theory that Seldon could become a powerful god-like entity who could exert influence over galactic events.
Hari Seldon is one of the central figures of Apple TV+’s Foundation. He is the father of psychohistory, which predicted the collapse of the Galactic Empire. So, to guide humanity through the ensuing dark ages, he devised a plan to entrust the preservation of human knowledge to a group of people. They would be called the Foundation.

This article contains spoilers for "Foundation" season 3, episode 3, "When A Book Finds You."
"Foundation" is back for season 3, and the arrival of the Mule is heating things up. It's also expanding the story quickly, including the establishment of the Second Foundation.
The Second Foundation is a very big deal in author Isaac Asimov's story. In fact, as the seven-book series plays out, the Second Foundation becomes much more important than the First Foundation. Expect it to soak up the limelight and play a major part in the show moving forward.
But does the Second Foundation that Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) are forging on Ignis in the show hold up to its page-printed predecessor? There are some clear connections, but like all things with this impressive but wildly twisted adaptation, there are also a lot of changes. Let's take a closer look at the latter.

Jason Clarke lit the world on fire in 2023 thanks to his gripping performance in Oppenheimer, but things have been relatively quiet for the star since then, until now. Clarke stars in the first images for The Last Frontier, his new Apple TV+ series that will begin streaming on October 10. Apple has also released the first short teaser for the 10-episode series, which also stars Dominic Cooper (The Gold), Haley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven), Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets), Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs), and Tait Blum (For All Mankind). The show was written and created for television by Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, who will also executive produce alongside Clarke. Clarke also wrote episodes of the show, which will be directed by Sam Hargrave, who has worked with Chris Hemsworth on both Extraction movies.
The Last Frontier follows Frank Remnick (Clarke), a lone U.S. marshal who looks after the quiet yet treacherous barrens of Alaska.

Fans of the legendary Isaac Asimov were skeptical when Apple TV+ launched Foundation in 2021. It was a visual feast on the small screen with its cinematic VFX, lavish sets, and experienced actors portraying the main characters. However, many were also skeptical.
The author’s original books, on which the show is based, spans galaxies and centuries as it engages in cerebral philosophical debates about the collapse of civilization, free will, fate, and more. Translating a nonlinear and jam-packed narrative into serialized, gripping television was always going to be a herculean task.
Asimov understood before his unfortunate death in 1992. He knew that any live-action adaptation of his works would have to depart significantly from the source material. When I, Robot was released in 2004, his daughter, Robyn Asimov, published a quote from her father that stated what he actually thought about the on-screen adaptations of his works.

Apple TV's breakout series Foundation is one of the best space sci-fi shows on television at the moment, and it's only getting better and better with each season. According to star Cassian Bilton, who plays Brother Daen, season 3 culminates in a finale that's "10 out of 10 television." We'll be the judge of that.
Based on the work of seminal sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov, Foundation is just about as ambitious as space opera shows can get. It's a real, in-depth space odyssey. With the show in its third season, the war between Empire and Foundation boils over. While the season 3 finale is still a few weeks away, Bilton is already hyping up some of the immense performances from his co-stars—specifically Terrence Mann (Brother Dusk), Laura Birn (Demerzel), and Lee Pace (Brother Day).

Jeff Daniels recently appeared on MSNBC’s “The Best People” podcast, hosted by Nicolle Wallace, and expressed his wish for Donald Trump supporters to lose their money for forcing the country to endure a second term of Trump as U.S. president.
“I hope you’re losing tons of money, those of you who thought this would be Ok,” Daniels bluntly told Trump voters. “My question is, what are you guys going to do about it?”
Wallace responded by saying Trump’s tariffs are going to hurt Trump voters and “your neighbors,” to which Daniels agreed and added: “I think, at the end of the day, that’s what’s going to do it. ‘Wait a minute, the grocery bill is what? $180 more? I can’t get that car that we have to have unless I pay another $8,000. What? Who do I blame for that? Who do I see about that?...

Foundation Season 3 finally pulled back the curtain on one of its most intriguing mysteries: what exactly happened to Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) during the massive 150-year time jump between seasons. Episode 2, "Shadows in the Math," delivers crucial answers about her extended absence and sets up what could be the most important alliance in the galaxy's fight against the looming threat of the Mule.
After awakening from cryosleep at the end of Season 3's premiere, Gaal finds herself in a drastically changed galaxy. The Foundation now controls the entire Outer Rim, and the psychic warlord known as the Mule has begun his terrifying conquest across the stars.
But Episode 2 reveals that Gaal's long slumber wasn't simply a matter of waiting out the decades. It was the result of a calculated decision by her mentor Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) that would prove both necessary and controversial.

Kathryn Bigelow already has two Academy Awards to her name, and she will be back for a buzzy awards run later this year. After making her directorial debut with the biker movie The Loveless (1981), Bigelow made a name for herself directing thrillers, such as Near Dark (1987), Blue Steel (1990), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995), and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002).
She gained critical acclaim for The Hurt Locker (2008), about a bomb squad in Iraq, and Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, with the war movie also winning Best Picture. She followed that up with the political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012), about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden, and earned another Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
However, her last movie was the crime drama Detroit (2017), but now, the first look at Bigelow's first film in eight years has been revealed.

Alberto Barbera presided over a lengthy press conference Tuesday morning, when he announced the stacked lineup for this year’s Venice Film Festival, which runs August 27-September 6.
The lineup is expansive, with big names and arthouse darlings sprinkled across the festival’s strands, even including the shorts program.
High-profile titles include Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny. Roberts leads the cast as a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light. The film will screen Out of Competition on Guadagnino and Amazon MGM Studios’ request, Barbera explained during the presser.

This will mark the Venice festival debut for both Roberts and Johnson.

Spoilers for "Foundation" season 3 follow. If you don't want to ruin the surprises to come, abandon ship now.
"Foundation" season 3 is here, and with it, a host of familiar faces. Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) continues to guide the First Foundation on Terminus. Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) is back out of cryogenic sleep and in the thick of the action. Lady Demerzel (Laura Birn) continues to control the Imperial throne, and of course, the three Cleons (Lee Pace) are still doing their thing as figureheads of Empire. This show has managed to maintain remarkable character consistency despite the utter lack thereof in the source material.
And yet, it isn't the familiar faces but an unfamiliar one that is worth noting in the most recent episode. Just three minutes into episode 2, "Shadows in the Math," we get a rapid-fire account of how the Second Foundation evolves over the course of the 151 years...

For All Mankind is all about an alternate world where the space race with the Soviet Union never ended. Foundation takes this concept of alternate futures and elevates it to a cosmic scale. The Lee Pace-starrer Apple TV+ show is based on the book series by Isaac Asimov and is undoubtedly one of the most epic sci-fi undertakings by the streaming platform. Foundation season 3 is currently airing and has an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, while on IMDb it has a score of 7.6/ 10.
The show blends politics, predictive mathematics, and philosophy on a galactic scale. It explores how leadership, technology, and ideology shape human civilizations. The sprawling visuals and sci-fi lore make the show a must-watch for fans who love alt-history drama like For All Mankind. However, instead of NASA politics and lunar bases, viewers will get psychohistory and clone emperors. But Foundation offers way more than that.

This article contains heavy spoilers for "Foundation" season 3, episode 2.
Apple TV+'s "Foundation," with its epic, millennia-spanning scope and blockbuster movie visuals, is one of the best sci-fi shows on TV. It's an adaptation that brings an impossibly big book to life, and while there have been many changes made along the way (including a substantial change to Pilou Asbæk's The Mule this season), it's all in service of a show that knows when to prioritize spectacle for general audiences and when to tie back into the source material.
We saw this last part play out in the season 3 premiere, when Demerzel (Laura Birn) explained the history of robots in the "Foundation" universe and how the Robot Wars started. That was a brilliant piece of adaptation that linked to the books while still surprising audiences who've read Isaac Asimov's work.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Sony Pictures attempted to create a cinematic universe based on Spider-Man, without the web-slinger himself. It went as well as Marvel fans expected, with Morbiusquickly becoming one of the most infamous (and worst) superhero movies of all time. If it wasn't already clear that the studio has in over its head with the idea, they tried to hire one of the most unique filmmakers working today to helm the box office flop.
While on the Mixed Signals podcast, Eddington director Ari Aster revealed that Sony approached him years ago to helm Morbius, which starred Jared Leto. Aster kept things brief and didn't divulge any details, but it is safe to say that the conversations with Sony probably did not get very far. Despite featuring a Spider-Man character and some star talent, Morbius proved to be a disaster for the studio, one that...

Foundation season 3 episode 2, titled Shadows in the Math, shows the other side of the coin: the Foundation. If episode 1 of the new season re-familiarized viewers with a fractured Empire, this one charts the growth of the Second Foundation as they prepare to face the Third Seldon Crisis. A huge chunk of the episode focuses on Jared Harris’s Hari Seldon’s final years awake as well as the growing danger of the Mule.
However, it is the ending that sends shockwaves through the Foundation, the Empire, and the viewers. The Genetic Dynasty is in a free fall, and psychohistory is also failing, while the Mule is threatening to end human civilization. However, in the final moments of Foundation season 3 episode 2, Brother Dawn, soon to be Brother Day, delivers Foundation’s Gaal Dornick a message.

Apple TV+’s Foundation TV series continues its season 3 with episode 2 titled, Shadows in the Math. This installment builds the narrative, which has taken an urgent and desperate tone thanks to the arrival of the Mule and the seemingly imminent downfall of the Empire. Foundation season 3 episode 2 focuses on the Third Crisis, as that could unravel the galactic civilization completely.
The premiere episode of Foundation season 3 caught viewers up on the Empire’s gradual downfall, happening 152 years after the season 2 finale. Now, episode 2 has brought the focus back to Gaal Dornick and Hari Seldon, who have been on planet Ignis and are working with the Second Foundation.
The plan was for them to awaken from cryosleep every year to decipher psychohistory’s predictions and get ready to face the Mule- a wrath unlike anything they’ve ever seen. Foundation season 3 episode 2 also takes new strides in VFX as everything from...

The third season of Foundation continues with its second episode, titled “Shadows in the Math.” As the name suggests, the entire episode revolves around our main characters — especially those with access to a Prime Radiant and so able to consult psychohistory directly — realizing that a new crisis is approaching. That something is about to happen, something that has the potential to bring about the end of civilization just like we saw Demerzel warn the Cleons of at the end of last week’s season premiere.
The episode starts with the part I loved the most, actually. Game of Thrones was the epic fantasy series of the 2010s, and a lot of shows that came after were clearly trying to capture some of its sheen. That includes Foundation, Apple's adaptation of Isaac Asimov's science fiction novels. The stories don't have much in common when it comes to the plot, but they're both sweeping epics that require a ton of resources and time to do right. "The plan for [Foundation], as I understood it, was to have eight seasons," star Jared Harris (Hari Seldon) recently told Radio Times. "There's no way of knowing whether they'll achieve that – the only way of knowing if we'll achieve that is people tune in. If people are watching, then they'll be encouraged to make more seasons."
That's another way Foundation recalls Game of Thrones. Recently, studios have been getting cold feet about their investments into these big sweeping fantasy stories, and...

The first episodes of Foundation Season 3 hit Apple TV+ last week, and critics are enjoying the show thus far, according to its strong 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The next episode of Foundation will begin streaming on July 18, and Collider is thrilled to partner with the streamer to unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming episode. The newly-released clip, which can be found below, shows The Mule (Pilou Absæk) using his evil mind control powers to make a young girl pick up a gun and hold it to her head. The Mule’s introduction this season has given members of the Foundation and viewers alike someone to fear. The show has produced some iconic villains through three seasons, but The Mule might just top them all.

Taron Egerton recently lit the world on fire with his performance in Carry-On, the Netflix original holiday thriller that rose the ranks to become one of the streamer’s most popular movies. However, his latest role comes in the form of a gritty detective series that’s been dominating streaming charts. Egerton stars alongside Jurnee Smollett and Rafe Spall in Smoke, the true-crime series following a troubled detective and an arson investigator who chase down two serial arsonists. The first four episodes of Smoke are currently streaming on Apple TV+, and the show is charting for Apple in more than 40 countries. It received mild reviews out of the gate thus far, earning a 70% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
Smoke is the perfect show to watch for fans who are missing True Detective, particularly the first season of the hit HBO series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

It’s without a doubt that the Season 3 premiere of Apple TV+’s compelling series, Foundation, has left fans yearning for more episodes, but too bad it only airs on Fridays. Created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, the sci-fi epic returned on July 11, 2025, and it’s already making a significant impression on streaming thanks to the super-intense Season 3 premiere, which comes two long years after the Season 2 finale that aired on September 15, 2023.

It’s only been almost a week since Foundation Season 3 premiered on AppleTV+ after a two-year hiatus, and critics have a lot of thoughts, though mostly positive. The new season was released on July 11, 2025, with familiar faces Jared Harris and Lee Pace returning as the leads, as well as fellow main stars Lou Llobell, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann. Just two days before its arrival, the acclaimed series earned a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critics’ rating, with praise directed at the excellent storyline adaptation; however, that score has now dropped, accompanied by an even lower Popcornmeter rating.

AppleTV+ has a wide variety of critically acclaimed sci-fi shows that have become major hits. One of them is Foundation.
The series, which premiered in 2021, has just returned to AppleTV+ with Season 3 and a new batch of episodes. The series is based on Isaac Asimov's classic novels and has received positive reviews since its release. Season 3 initially debuted with a perfect score, but that has changed as more reviews came in, and Foundation just debuted with an underwhelming 68% approval score from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ahead of its release on Jul. 11, Foundation Season 3 debuted with a 100% rating from the critics. The sci-fi series received stellar praise in the early reviews, with Inverse's Ryan Britt calling it "the true Game of Thrones in space." Cbr's Jamie Parker noted the Apple TV+ hit is "one of the best shows of the year and a must-watch show for all sci-fi fans,...

Foundation has been hailed as a triumph that does justice to the Isaac Asimov books it is based on. Its stunning visuals complement the philosophical themes and morally ambiguous, flawed characters. The show explores the downfall of the Galactic Empire as predicted by Hari Seldon’s psychohistory.
To prevent human civilization from plunging into the Dark Ages, Seldon plans for the Foundation to protect human knowledge. The Apple TV+ sci-fi show explains clone dynasties, interstellar politics, psychohistory, and psychic abilities well, but one concept remains a bit unclear: time travel.
Foundation uses a cocktail of relativistic travel, cryosleep, and even mental projections to travel through and manipulate time. Gaal Dornick and Salvor Hardin go through massive time jumps to remain a part of the plot over centuries. This results in a non-linear narrative that stays emotionally powerful. But it’s also confusing. So, how does it all work?

The first law of robotics is to watch the season 3 premiere of "Foundation" before reading further. Spoilers ahead.
Much like Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," AppleTV+'s "Foundation" takes a science fiction work that was previously considered unadaptable and adds enough blockbuster size spectacle to balance out the very dense worldbuilding.
And there is a lot of ground to cover in the "Foundation." The story deals with the centuries-long plan from psychohistorian and super-genius Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) to save humanity from a millennia-long dark ages with the establishment of a Foundation that will preserve human knowledge. Each season of the show jumps forward in time over a century, like "For All Mankind" on steroids. We've seen entire planets be destroyed, kingdoms rise and fall, and the slow but steady decay of a galactic empire, while changing the entire cast every season — since they all die, with a couple of notable exceptions.

Foundation season 3 returned on July 11, 2025, after an almost two-year hiatus. The Apple TV+ series is based on Isaac Asimov’s books of the same name. The show has prided itself on its visual sci-fi spectacle and narratively dense writing that steers complex characters. As such, it is an ambitious adaptation in terms of production.
Season 3 faced multiple issues in getting up and running- there were budgetary complications as well as industry-wide strikes that complicated production and release. Making matters worse was the departure of creator David S. Goyer from the show. As such, making Foundation season 3 clearly had its set of challenges. However, despite the long gap, season 3 has bounced back with a perfect 100 % Rotten Tomatoes score.

If a big-budget, labyrinthine sci-fi series featuring an occasionally half-naked Lee Pace drops in the forest of Apple TV+, does it make a sound?
That’s the question that Foundation has been asking since it premiered on the fledgling streaming service in September 2021. By all marks, from its high production values to its sprawling premise that traverses the space-time continuum, the series seems like the kind of all-consuming smash hit that would collect a truckload of Emmys and shape physical and digital watercooler conversations for months. However, the show’s cultural cachet has floundered as a consequence of existing on a streamer whose television catalog has coalesced around Ted Lasso and little else.

The series’s under-the-radar status has allowed it to operate without incident or, heaven forbid, studio and audience notes. The show is now on its third season, as sprawling, methodical, and complicated in its...
