If you still remember teen fantasy shows like The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale that went on for far too long, even after their stories had no steam left, but you might not remember the shows in this list, as they had so much more story to tell, but they were canceled way too soon. Teen fantasy shows were all the rage in the 2010s and that’s why there were so many of them but most of them didn’t hit as hard as The Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf, but that doesn’t mean that the shows that were canceled were not as good or even better then these two shows. That’s the reason why we decided to compile a list of seven great (or underrated) teen fantasy shows that had great potential but were canceled way too soon.

White House Correspondents Dinner Weekend Was the Death Knell for Traditional D.C. Media
Image
On Saturday night, as legacy media journalists crowded into the Washington Hilton for the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, the mood was somber. The White House Correspondents’ Association decided to omit its usual comedic performance this year, reportedly because the Trump administration complained about the scheduled host. The association said that they wanted “to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division,” so journalists sat quietly while awards and speeches were given.

It did not make for an exciting scene. “It was all NPCs,” says Alice Ma, using...

Rewatch or not? Before Rachel Zegler, Kristen Stewart headlined the live-action ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’
Image
Snow White had been kicking around for centuries before the Brothers Grimm immortalized her story in print in their seminal 1812 collection of fairy tales. It’s also a tale that Hollywood has found irresistible. There were two Snow White silent films in 1902 and 1916, decades before Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs broke new ground as a full-length animated film in 1937. Since then, Disney’s take on Snow White has defined the character’s presence in pop culture.

Beyond Disney’s version, there have been plenty of other attempts to bring the story to the big screen. That includes some wild swings, like Snow White and the Three Stooges in 1961. Then in 2012, there were two big-budget productions of Snow White that went head-to-head: Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman. The former, a relatively straightforward live-action retelling starring Lily Collins in the title role with Julia Roberts...

Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott Produced an Adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol'
Image
When one thinks of Christmas movies, the image of Tom Hardy or Guy Pearce doesn't necessarily come to mind. Hardy has made a name for himself by taking challenging roles that usually lead to more masculine and stoic roles. While he is a vastly underrated actor, Guy Pearce has never reached the same acclaim as Hardy. Yet, he has also settled into similar roles, dripping machismo. That is not to say that celebrating the holidays is not necessarily under the scope of 'manly,' but the season is more focused on good tidings and coming together.

Is this why their work on an adaptation of A Christmas Carol flew under the radar? Or is it just that it exists as one of the many superb adaptations and gets lost in the slew of Christmas movies that drop yearly? We will examine this underrated Christmas gem, why it did not get the deserved praise,...

Where Did Election Night TV Viewers Disappear To? New Data Suggests They Flocked to YouTube
Image
Election night 2024 saw its TV ratings fall sharply compared to 2020, but new data suggests that tens of millions of Americans were still tuning in … they were just watching on YouTube.

The Google-owned video platform said Thursday that more than 45 million people in the U.S. watched election-related content on Tuesday, Nov. 5. That is an enormous number, and while obviously not everyone was watching live videos in primetime, it suggests that tens of millions of people were nonetheless turning to YouTube for election-relayed information.

For comparison, Nielsen said that an average of 42.29 million viewers tuned in across 18 cable and broadcast networks from 7-11 p.m. Et. The YouTube data is not an exact comparison, but still shows a scale that is only matched by traditional TV.

When it comes to election livestreams, YouTube said that the most-watched stream was from Fox News, which peaked at more than one million concurrent...

Hulu’s TV Series ‘Great Expectations’: A Fresh First Impression
Image
Introduction Adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens are numerous. Like ‘Shakespeare,’ if you can think of an alteration to the text, it has been done. Dickens' characters have sung, worn modern clothing, and even been played by muppets. FX in partnership with Hulu, has recently released their newest version of ‘Great Expectations’. The show sets up the classic story in an engaging way. Dickens’ penchant for poetry shines through Pip, the orphan who dreams of a better life. ‘Great Expectations’ follows Pip as he tries to rise in the social hierarchy. Young Pip is played by Tom Sweet. He combines a poetic and romantic disposition with an ambition that makes him stand out. He is raised by his cruel sister Sarah, played by Hayley Squires, and his kind brother-in-law Joe, played by Owen McDonnell. These characters not only give Pip a template to contrast himself with, but they also use him to their advantage.

A House in Jerusalem review – supernatural drama of Israeli-Palestinian history
Muayad Alayan
A bereaved child moves to Jerusalem where she encounters a ghostly Palestinian girl no one else can see in this sensitive film about intergenerational trauma

Uncanny timing for an uncanny tale of Israeli-Palestinian history returning to haunt the present; in this case literally. This is a small-scale domestic drama with a supernatural tinge, set almost entirely in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and made by Palestinian film-maker Muayad Alayan, based on his own family history.

The story begins with Michael, a bereaved British-Jewish father (Johnny Harris), and his daughter Rebecca (Miley Locke) arriving in Jerusalem, looking for a new start after the death of their wife/mother in a car crash, a tragedy still fresh in both of their minds. They have inherited Michael’s father’s home: a grand old villa with plenty of light and space – not your classic haunted house. But Rebecca’s discovery of an old doll leads...

‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Review: A Splendid Ewan McGregor Finds the Silver Lining in Societal Collapse
Image
Ewan McGregor is no stranger to accents. The Scottish star earned an Emmy nomination for playing Minnesotan twins on “Fargo,” won TV’s highest honor for embodying the Iowa-born, Manhatten-bred Halston (in Ryan Murphy’s “Halston”), and should have an Oscar on his shelf for belting out impeccable love ballads as Christian, the smitten English author in “Moulin Rouge!” He’s channeled a stock American accent enough times for U.S. audiences to forget his natural intonation and tweaked his rounded enunciation to befit everything from salmon to sea otters.

So when tasked with playing Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov in Showtime’s eight-episode adaptation of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” I have no doubt he could’ve channeled a perfectly feasible Russian accent — and I am profusely thankful he didn’t. The series, which starts in 1917 and spans the decades-long establishment of the Soviet Union, allows McGregor to speak in...

Ewan McGregor Charms in ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, but Can’t Turn the Hit Novel Into a Compelling Show: TV Review
Image
The titular gentleman of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat played with sprightly joie de vivre by an enthusiastic Ewan McGregor. An aesthete with impassioned opinions about wine pairings, Rostov was born to live the life of leisure handed down to him by his landowning ancestors. The problem is that Rostov is a man unfit for his time. Before he can assume management of his family’s country estate, the Russian Revolution rudely intervenes. A populist poem from his student days spares Rostov the firing squad, relegating him instead to a lifetime of house arrest in Moscow’s fictional Metropol hotel.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Amor Towles, “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows Rostov through the doors of the Metropol and stays there through decades of Russian history, from the formation of the Soviet Union to Stalinist repression to World War II and beyond.
