Deborah Kerr in Black Narcissus (1947)
‘David Lynch had to personally approve the screening’: the film clubs driving the celluloid revival
Deborah Kerr in Black Narcissus (1947)
A ballooning number of repertory groups dedicated to cinema in its original medium are springing up across the UK. They explain its uphill thrills

As staff read out fire safety precautions and evacuation procedures before a 35mm nitrate print screening of Black Narcissus at the BFI, the packed crowd titter in excitement and anticipation. How often do you go to the cinema with an awareness that the film you are watching is being physically unspooled, live, with a possibility of actual combustion due to the ultra-flammable material it contains?

The desire to watch films projected on film is on the rise across the UK – and the number of repertory film clubs dedicated to analogue screenings is ballooning. Sheffield-based Reel Steel seek out rare gems – “doing the detective work to find 35mm prints in a screen-worthy condition can be a year-round task”, says founder Joseph Harris. Manchester-based Certificate X Cult Film...

Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler and Common on How Going to an Hbcu Helped Them Succeed in Hollywood
Image
In the three decades since School Daze and the equally influential TV series A Different World were released, HBCUs, or historically Black colleges and universities, have seen a resurgence of much-needed attention. In 2019, Beyoncé’s Homecoming docufilm celebrated Black marching band and dance team culture, a pinnacle of any Hbcu football game. The 2021 inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris put her undergraduate university Howard in the national spotlight; that same year, the Washington institution would rename its College of Fine Arts in honor of the late Chadwick Boseman, who graduated there in 2000, with Phylicia Rashad as dean.

For Hbcu alums working in Hollywood, there’s a connective thread of deep pride for their educational foundations. THR spoke with nearly 30 executives, producers, directors, actors and writers who collectively acknowledged how their collegiate experience best prepared them for the multifaceted demands of careers in entertainment. While some have built formal alumni networks...

Emily S. Whitten: Awesome Con Round Up
Sweet Christmas, everyone – this year’s Awesome Con was busy as all get-out and chock-full of cool things to see and do, and con season is rushing by so fast that I’m just now getting to my recap! (We can also blame the con crud for this, alas. It’s been following me around for a solid month.) As always, there were way more activities than one mere mortal could get to. And on top of that, this was the first year where I really saw multiple events surrounding the con that were either not directly affiliated with the con but inspired by it, or connected to it but not part of the main con experience.

So let’s start there. First off, I was part of a pre-con round-table interview Awesome Con set up with the inestimable Stan Lee. Stan answered many great questions. He talked about what...

Joe Harris Dies: ‘Silly Rabbit’ Creator, ‘Underdog’ Animator Was 89
Joe Harris, an advertising illustrator who drew two cartoon figures that would become icons of the Baby Boomer generation – Underdog and the Trix “silly rabbit” – died last month at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 89. “Silly rabbit!,” Harris’ 1950s ad copy went, quickly becoming a common playground taunt and a lasting advertising catchphrase. “Trix are for kids!” Harris drew the long-eared, sneaky bunny with a taste for the colorful General Mills breakfast cereal. Emily Whitten’s New York Comic Con 2016 Round-Up!
New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.

The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.

This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

Emily S. Whitten Looks Forward to Nycc 2016!
The New York Comic Con is upon us once again, and I can’t wait. This year, as usual, I have a massive list of things I want to see, people I want to talk to, and, of course, merchandise I want to take a gander at (not to buy it, of course. Oh no no no! Certainly not, considering I have way too many collectibles already. I’m just going to look. Really. Just…you know, a little bit. No buying here, nosiree…um). There are also a few cool parties floating around…and you know how I love a good party.

Everyone who goes to Nycc has their own unique wish list of what they want to experience while there. But in case you aren’t sure what you want to see first, here are some of the things I’m most looking forward to. Maybe they’ll appeal to you,...

Emily S. Whitten: Awesome Con Round-Up & A Look Ahead
Con season has well and truly slid into gear now; with Awesome Con kicking things off a few weeks ago and Sdcc and NerdHQ fast approaching. Of course, con season is really year-round these days; but for me, it starts with Awesome Con and ends with New York Comic Con.

This year’s Awesome Con was, as usual, a great start to the season for me. What I like about the con is that despite only being four years old, it’s managed to integrate various fun aspects of different flavors of cons into a fairly seamless whole – meaning that if you aren’t there for one particular facet of the offerings, there are plenty of others to experience. Here were some of the highlights for me:

The media guests:

Awesome Con has consistently done well in getting big names to a young con. This year’s lineup included everyone...

One Killed Three Injured In T.I. Concert Shooting
A man has been killed and three injured in a shooting at rapper T.I.'s concert in New York on Wednesday night (25May16).

The Live Your Life rapper was due to go on stage at the Irving Plaza venue in New York City when shots were fired around 10.15pm local time in the third floor green room area backstage. Opening acts Maino and Uncle Murda were performing at the time and T.I. was in the building.

People ran from backstage onto the concert floor, and video footage shows the crowd of around 1,000 fans frantically trying to evacuate the venue after hearing the gun shots.

“Right when he was about to go on I heard two gunshots, and right after, there was a stampede,” eyewitness Ayo Fagbemi told the New York Times. “There were at least three rounds, but after the second one was when people started running.”

Four people,...

Emily S. Whitten: Nycc 2015 Part II – The Round-Up!
As much fun as Turtles Day (as I now affectionately call the Thursday of New York Comic Con) was, it’s most definitely not the only awesome thing about Nycc. There’s always so much awesome stuffed into those four days that it’s hard to sum it up.

This year, to assist me in my round-up, I thought I’d finally try out a New Method of Doing Things, given that my awesome friend Cleolinda Jones finds it so useful, and that she’s been using it to successfully round-up all of the online things we mention during our Made of Fail podcast (which is still going, by the way! Our latest episode was Dragon Con: The Wrath of Con. Lisssstennn!)

So even though I’m still going to hit the highlights below, I’m also going to direct you afterwards to my brand new, shiny first effort at using Storify (woo!

Mike Gold: Scott Allie and the Temple of Doom
This may come as a surprise to some of you who know me, but I honestly believe that people can redeem themselves. I believe in second chances, and I try to reserve my interpersonal cynicism for, oh, say, Republican presidential candidates. More important, I also believe that every man, woman and child on the planet engages in great acts of assholedom from time to time. Ain’t nobody walking on water, and all our houses have their glass wings.

I also understand why most people who have been subjected to great acts of assholedom might not feel so charitable at that time. We’re hurt, angry and abused and we feel in our guts that we’re entitled to some relief – even if such relief is merely howling with the wolves. Such is human nature. Dogs and cats generally handle it better, and we’d all do well to remember that.

[Exclusive Preview] “The X-Files Season 10″ #24
So here’s something I never thought I’d say. However, the series is coming […]...
