After escaping cancellation on two separate occasions, the police procedural drama, S.W.A.T. was finally cancelled. In under a week, the universe was saved as Sony Pictures Television revealed that there would be a spin-off titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. Shemar Moore will return as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr. to lead the new show as the only confirmed actor returning from the original series...for now. There have been suggestions from studio executives hinting at the prospect of fan-favorites from the original S.W.A.T. series joining the spin-off in some capacity. Now, ahead of production kicking off, character descriptions have begun to come out.
Filming on S.W.A.T. Exiles will begin in September, according to a report from TV Line, with casting currently underway for five characters. Joining Moore's Hondo will be two characters described as a Black former Marine from South Central, described as charismatic, and an undercover cop who has a questionable shooting in his past.

Just when it looked like the CBS series "S.W.A.T." was finally dead, after slipping the noose at the eleventh hour over the last two seasons, it yet lives again — only this time, there's a twist to the show's stay of execution. "S.W.A.T." isn't getting renewed, it's getting spun off. And, perhaps most surprisingly, there's a vocal contingent of fans who are none too pleased with this development.
In 2023 and 2024, CBS let the decision to renew "S.W.A.T." go right down to the wire — which is strange because the series has been slowly ticking upwards in the Nielsen ratings over the past three years. Obviously, it's nowhere near as popular as many of the streaming behemoths (as Nielsen's first multi-platform ratings showed), and, like many long-running shows, it keeps getting more expensive to keep the core cast together, but networks have traditionally preferred steadiness to taking a risk on something new.

Just when fans were making peace with the end of S.W.A.T., CBS dropped a curveball—again. After an unexpected rollercoaster of renewals, cancellations, and farewells, the popular action drama took one final bow with its Season 8 finale in May 2025.
Before the dust could settle, a spinoff series was announced. And at the center of it all? Shemar Moore, the show’s magnetic lead, stepped into the spotlight once again—this time, alone.
A Goodbye That Didn’t Stick
S.W.A.T. has always had a complicated relationship with cancellation. First axed in 2023 after six strong seasons, it was Shemar Moore himself who helped orchestrate the show’s revival for a seventh.
The network eventually gave it another chance, only to cut the cord again ahead of the 2026 broadcast schedule. This final cancellation seemed definitive.
CBS dropped several shows at once—including FBI: Most Wanted—and S.W.A.T. was among the casualties. Fans braced for closure.

The story surrounding the characters of S.W.A.T. outside of Shemar Moore’s Hondo seemed like it was fully closed following the series’ finale last month. But, that might not be the case after all. While catching up with Deadline at the Banff TV Festival, Sony Pictures Television Chairman, Keith LeGoy, teased that there might be more to come from Hondo’s longtime partners. Shortly after the show received its cancellation (its third cancellation at that), it was announced that Sony would be picking up the leading character and tossing him into his own spin-off. Titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, the show is said to follow Hondo as he leads a group of up-and-coming crime-fighting tactical professionals. For now, Moore is the only alumnus signed on for the production, but LeGoy says there’s a very good chance that could change, telling Deadline,

More S.W.A.T. co-stars could join Shemar Moore in S.W.A.T. Exiles, according to a Sony Pictures Television head. Fans can only hope all of Hondo's 20 Squad returns in the spinoff.
The entire S.W.A.T. cast could appear in S.W.A.T. Exiles, Sony Pictures Television Chairman Keith LeGoy hinted in a statement. Per Deadline, he said they're exploring ways to integrate the original ensemble in the spinoff, through guest appearances or cameos. "There is a S.W.A.T. family and that family is important," he asserted. "We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it's all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That's something that we are still figuring out."
S.W.A.T. Exiles was confirmed in development in May, shortly after the original series ended. Shemar Moore would return as Sergeant Hondo, who comes out of retirement to lead a unit of new recruits.

When the new S.W.A.T. Exiles spinoff was announced — it still doesn’t have a network or streaming home — the only one set to return from the long-running CBS drama, which wrapped after eight seasons (and more than one uncancellation), was Shemar Moore (Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson). But appearances from the rest of the S.W.A.T. cast haven’t been ruled out completely. “There is a S.W.A.T. family and that family is important. Sony Pictures Television has ordered a 10-episode spinoff titled “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” bringing Shemar Moore back as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson only days after the parent drama ended its eight-season run on CBS.
The series opens with a botched mission that drags Hondo out of semi-retirement to shape a unit of untested recruits, a premise writer-producer Jason Ning—fresh off Lucifer—believes will spotlight generational tensions inside law enforcement.
Sony green-lit Exiles without a U.S. network, betting the compact order will suit streamers; president Katherine Pope calls ten episodes the “sweet spot” for modern storytelling while hinting that the new show and its predecessor now occupy a shared universe.
Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles this summer, with roughly 200 crew members from the original series—line producer Jim Scura among them—retaining their jobs despite the franchise’s repeated cancellations and revivals.

When Sony Pictures Television surprised S.W.A.T. fans with Exiles, a spinoff of the CBS cop drama, it emerged that Shemar Moore was the only original star signed up to star, disappointing many loyal fans and some of Moore’s co-stars.
The ten-part series, which is based around Moore’s Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson character, is being launched without an “anchor” broadcaster after a “frantic” dealmaking process.
S.W.A.T stars including Jay Harrington, who played Sgt. David ‘Deacon’ Kay, and David Lim, who played Officer Victor Tan, were among those caught off guard by the announcement. Harrington was sanguine about the move but admitted it “stung”, while Lim used the same phrase.
However, Keith LeGoy, Chairman, Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, admitted that there is a chance for some of the former S.W.A.T stars may end up on Exiles.

Jay Harrington has a message for S.W.A.T. fans who were put off by Shemar Moore's "I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T." statement. Moore recently confirmed he will lead the spinoff show and its all-new ensemble.
The S.W.A.T. cast knew about the spinoff before the series finale dropped. "[Shemar Moore] wanted to be the one to tell us," Jay Harrington told TV Line. "That's when I told my reps, and they had no idea." He has since come to terms with that blindside announcement. "If there was any disappointment, it's that when they announced it, we weren't mentioned at all," he asserted. "That was it. And it was short-lived because I thought, 'I'm not going to let that take away from what I know in my heart is eight years of putting in some great work.'"

Well, 2025 may have brought back some heavy-hitter TV shows like The White Lotus and Severance, but it also came swinging with the cancellation hammer, and no network was safe. From teen drama to crime procedurals, the chopping block was busy this year, and let’s just say, some of these cuts still sting. Yep, we’re talking about The Sex Lives of College Girls, S.W.A.T., and even FBI: Most Wanted. Ouch.
CBS, in particular, raised a few eyebrows (and blood pressure levels) with their ruthless spring cleaning. But according to the network’s bigwigs, it all comes down to numbers, ratings, and budget spreadsheets no one wants to look at. Translation- if your show wasn’t pulling its weight, it’s out.

A few weeks ago, we found ourselves in the middle of cancellation season as several shows were axed by networks. The severity of the exercise was notable when CBS axed the long-running fan-favorite procedural, S.W.A.T. which had survived two previous cancellations. In the days that followed the announcement, many S.W.A.T. fans held out hope that the network would reverse one more time, but that didn't materialize. However, the franchise will live on, with Sony stepping in and setting in motion an offshoot series, titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. The upcoming spin-off will follow Shemar Moore’s Hondo as he enters a new phase of his life. So, what does the spin-off mean for Moore's colleagues?
While Moore might have lofty ideas of himself as the self-proclaimed “Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.”, he is not the only one who has served and endured through all eight seasons of the procedural drama. Jay Harrington, who played David “Deacon” Kay,...

Jay Harrington is finally opening up about Shemar Moore’s S.W.A.T. spinoff, revealing he had no idea a new project was in the works. S.W.A.T. wrapped up its series finale on Friday, May 16, after eight seasons, but it was later announced that Moore would reprise his role of Hondo for a spinoff series, S.W.A.T. Exiles. However, Moore is the only original cast member expected to appear in the upcoming spinoff. From Day 1 and for the first few years of its eight-season run, CBS’ S.W.A.T. reboot was about David “Deacon” Kay being passed over for 20-Squad’s leadership position, in favor of Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.
Deacon and Hondo would eventually reach a certain peace about their respective roles on Swat, but they very much were co-leads on the team — two senior officers the others could rely on for wisdom, leadership and to “watch your six.”

S.W.A.T. slammed the door in the face of what remained of its original squad, but should they have done that?
Again, I’m not a S.W.A.T. diehard. I tuned into the first few seasons of the series, but ironically, with the cast shifts and so forth, it often begins to take a toll on me, seeing characters I love exit stage right.
Why? Because to me, S.W.A.T. was an ensemble series, and sometimes, if the ensemble shifts too much, a girl’s interest wanes.
(Bill Inoshita/CBS)
However, it’s still a series that I’ll catch an installment or two here and there.
I’ve admitted that a series that scored three different renewals after deaths should probably call it quits. But I also know how much the general audience loves this series.

S.W.A.T. Exiles spoilers and updates reveal S.W.A.T. fans came together to prevent the show’s cancellation; however, when a spinoff was revealed, only one original cast member was cast.
This announcement led to significant backlash for lead actor, Shemar Moore, who has played Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. since the show’s inception.
The Spinoff Was Announced
When CBS revealed in March that Season 8 would be the final season for S.W.A.T., fans of the police drama came together to try to save it once again.
The show had faced cancellation in both 2023 and 2024, only to be saved at the last moment. Season 7 was initially meant to be the last, but CBS surprised everyone with a renewal.
Two key stars of S.W.A.T. were written out at the end of Season 7. Kenny Johnson (Dominique Luca), and Alex Russell (Jim Street), were both moved to recurring roles in Season 7 and eventually exited the show.

It’s now been just over two months since S.W.A.T. was canceled by CBS, but fans of the series didn’t have to wait too long for some good news. S.W.A.T. fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster over the past two years, mourning the series’ cancellation and rejoicing in its subsequent resurrection — three times each.
Like the action drama’s first two comebacks at CBS — its surprising cancellation reversal in 2023 and equally surprising 2024 Season 8 renewal after Season 7 had been billed as final — the most recent one was a cause for celebration, at least at the beginning.
And like the previous two saves, that last one also came as a surprise, two and a half months after S.W.A.T.’s latest (and permanent) cancellation by CBS and only 3 days after its series finale aired on the broadcast network. On Sunday night, S.W.A.T. studio Sony Pictures Television announced that it was extending the franchise with a spinoff series, S.W.A.T.
Exiles, headlined by original series’ star Shemar Moore reprising his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

CBS’s action drama series S.W.A.T. has been kicking doors down since 2017. The show was the reboot of the 1975 TV series. It followed Shemar Moore’s Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson and his team of LAPD officers and gave us eight seasons full of action and social commentary. But even though the show was a success, it had its own challenges.
S.W.A.T. has been cancelled many times before, and it was the fans’ love that kept bringing it back again and again. But now, the series marked its end with Season 8. However, that doesn’t mean that fans won’t see Hondo back in action. A new spinoff series has already been announced, which will keep the legacy of the original alive. But before that, let’s explore what happened with the original series and what the spinoff brings to the table.

'I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.': Shemar Moore Opens Up on Hondo Getting His Own Spinoff in New Video
S.W.A.T. fans have something to look forward to after the cancellation, Sergeant Hondo is soldiering on in a "bigger, bolder" spinoff. Shemar Moore has a message for longtime co-stars who won't be part of the new crew.
Shemar Moore rallied fans to support the S.W.A.T. spinoff in an Instagram video. "The game has changed. But S.W.A.T. Exiles, baby! Bigger, bolder. S.W.A.T. on steroids," he teased. Exiles was confirmed shortly after the S.W.A.T. finale, but it's yet to be confirmed if any of the co-stars will return in the new show. Moore hinted at a creative overhaul, however: "Nobody likes change," he said. "I understand that. I get it 100%. But without change, you can't grow. You can't win without taking your lumps…. It ain't easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain't. TV shows don't last eight years anymore."

Shemar Moore will not apologize for continuing S.W.A.T. without his former squad.
In a lengthy Instagram video, in which Moore acknowledges that he “might catch some flack from the industry with what I’m about to say,” TV’s Hondo refers to himself as “the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.,” and says it’s up to the “team” on the recently announced Exiles spinoff to “keep on pushing with their quarterback.”

Shemar Moore posted a divisive video on his Instagram profile defending his decision to return for a “S.W.A.T” sequel series without his former cast members. As reported by Variety, Moore is returning as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson for the 10-episode “S.W.A.T. Exiles” spinoff after the flagship series ended its eight-season run on May 16. Moore’s co-stars, included Jay Harrington (who played fan favorite Deacon), were not announced to be joining him, prompting disappointing and criticism from “S.W.A.T.” fans.
“I might catch some flak from the industry and probably most likely from the fans,” Moore said at the start of his video post. “Nobody likes change. I understand it. But without change you can’t grow.”
Moore promised that “S.W.A.T. Exiles” would be “bigger” and “bolder” than the original show, describing it as “‘S.W.A.T’ on steroids.” He then called himself the “Tom Brady of ‘S.W.A.T.’”
“That’s not arrogant.

While recognizing he may “catch some flak” from the industry and fans, Shemar Moore on Monday spoke out about his upcoming S.W.A.T. spinoff while using a Tom Brady analogy to explain why he’s going it alone this time.
In a lengthy Instagram video, Moore acknowledged that “nobody likes change” and “you can’t win without taking your lumps” before talking about his decision to do S.W.A.T. Exiles. Moore will reprise his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson but the new iteration will focus on his leading “a last-chance experimental Swat unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits.” None of his co-stars were mentioned in the announcement that came late Sunday from Sony Pictures TV Studios.
Devoted fans of the cop drama that aired for eight seasons on CBS embraced the decision but tempered their praise with questions about why former castmates like the popular Jay Harrington as Deacon weren’t joining the new venture.

After nearly a decade of tactical takedowns, moral dilemmas, and community service on primetime television, S.W.A.T. has officially signed off.
The action-packed series, led by the ever-charismatic Shemar Moore, concluded its final mission on May 16, 2025, bringing an end to an eight-season journey that beat the odds more than once.
From its premiere in 2017, S.W.A.T. carved its own lane in the crowded world of cop dramas, reinventing the 1970s classic with a modern edge and a deeply diverse cast. Fans gravitated toward Moore’s portrayal of Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson—a leader caught between duty and justice in a city that rarely made things easy. Alongside him were Jay Harrington, Alex Russell, David Lim, and others who gave heart and heat to the streets of Los Angeles.
But while the series found a devoted audience, its path behind the scenes was anything but smooth. Cancellations, comebacks, contract conflicts, and network shake-ups made S.

As Swat gears up for its final two episodes of the series, the CBS show has also been making sure to wrap up storylines involving the core characters, including some characters who had a more supporting role, such as Donovan Rocker.
Played by Lou Ferrigno Jr., Rocker has often been seen working alongside Squad 20 or being in silly competitions with the rest of the Swat officers. His popularity also saw a resurgence due to Ferrigno Jr.’s time on 911, where he played Tommy Kinard, the love interest of one of their main characters, Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark). Now with Swat going into the final episodes, we got to see Rocker once again.

The end of an era will finally arrive later this week when S.W.A.T. bows out following a largely successful eight-season run. Despite the hopes of fans and cast members that the series might receive a last-minute decision to pull it back from the edge of extinction, the end is nigh for Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the rest of his tactical team. As we march towards the series finale, executive producer, Andrew Dettmann, has filled in followers on what to expect from what will certainly be an explosive farewell.
