  • (December 10, 1965) The fundraiser, "Appeal II: For Continued Freedom in the Arts", was raised at a rented auditorium in Geary near Fillmore in San Francisco, California with Jefferson Airplane (Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Spencer Dryden, Jack Casady, Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen, Skip Spence, Joey Covington); The Great Society; Big Brother and the Holding Company (Peter Albin, Janis Joplin, James Gurley, Sam Andrew, David Getz, Ben Nieves, Cathy Richardson, Chuck Jones, Nick Gravenites, Kathi McDonald, Dave Shallock, Mike Finnegan and Tom Finch); Quicksilver Messenger Service (Jim Murray, Gary Duncan, David Freiberg, Alexander Spence, John Cipollina, Dino Valenti, Casey Sonoban, Greg Elmore and Nicky Hopkins); The Charlatans; John Handy Quintet; Mystery Trend; Gentlemen's Band and the Grateful Dead (formerly the Warlocks)(Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir, Greg Errico, Phil Lesh, Robert Hunter, Brent Mydland, Keith Godchaux, Ron McKernan, Donna Godchaux, Tom Constanten and Vince Welnick) using their new name for the first time. Robert Hurwitt, a troupe member, was producer. R.G. Davis was artistic director.
