How ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Is Finding a Whole New Sound at Sphere, With a Re-Recorded Orchestra, an Untouched Judy Garland, and Aural Design That Puts You in the Twister: ‘Hold Onto Your Dentures’
Image
“You’re in the tornado, man.”

That is Paul Freeman, the principal audio artist at Sphere Studios, talking, offering a plainspoken assurance to cinematic thrill-seekers about the enhanced version of 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” that is coming to Las Vegas beginning Aug. 28. The immersive elements are designed to tickle all the senses, but Sphere’s sound maestro is focused on his department and has some promises to make about how being off to see —and hear— the Wizard in 2025 will not be akin to just putting an upgraded speaker system in the old jalopy.

There are so many questions to address, when it comes to this severe a reinvention of a classic. Even limiting them just to the aural, for now: How much of the orchestral score was re-recorded? Will Dorothy still sound like Dorothy, amid all the updates, or will Judy Garland now be lip-synching to Addison Rae?...

Lesh, who co-founded the Grateful Dead, died in October 2024 at the age...

Today Rolling Stone published a lengthy interview with Bobby Weir, the first all-out Rolling Stone Interview that Weir has ever done. Here are a few takeaways.

He’s open to the Dead continuing with only its core members.

Asked about the idea of a possible reunion to mark the Dead’s 60th anniversary this year, Weir said, “When Phil [Lesh] checked out,...

Bobby Weir: ‘I’ve Never Made Plans. I’m Too Busy’
Image
Bobby Weir has been on the road virtually without a break since 1965, but the past few weeks have been crazy even by his standards. In December, he and his band the Grateful Dead were honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Now, in late January in Los Angeles, the jam-band legends are being celebrated as MusiCares’ Persons of the Year. In a couple of days, Weir will attend the 67th Grammy Awards, posing for a photo with Taylor Swift that will make Deadheads trip out even more than usual.

MusiCares Grateful Dead Tribute Is Big on Laughs (Thank You, Woody Harrelson), Love and Vibes
Image
A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.

Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

Remembering the Prodigious, Trailblazing Legacy of Tabla Legend Zakir Hussain
Image
In Islamic tradition, the father of a newborn is expected to recite the adhan, or call to prayer, in his child’s right ear, so that the first sounds the baby hears upon entering this world are exaltations of God’s supremacy, setting them on a path of grace and virtue. It should come as no surprise, then, that the first sounds Zakir Hussain heard when he was born, one distant March in Bombay, were not words of faith, but tabla rhythms whispered by his father, Ustad Alla Rakha, himself a master of the instrument.

Kennedy Center Honors Features Salutes To Francis Ford Coppola, The Grateful Dead And Bonnie Raitt — And A Sendoff To Joe Biden
Image
Updated: At Sunday’s Kennedy Center Honors, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro each appeared on stage to give special tributes to Francis Ford Coppola, while Al Pacino called him a trailblazer willing to break the first rule of Hollywood: Never put your own money in your movie projects.

Julia Louis Dreyfus said that when honoree Bonnie Raitt “sings and plays, you know instantly that it’s Bonnie Raitt. It’s just all red hair and no bulls—.”

After testimonials for honoree The Grateful Dead from figures like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, David Letterman popped out of a prop Deadhead’s Vw van and declared, “I’m so f—ed up.”

Then, Letterman threw in a quip about the trepidation of what’s ahead for the annual event, D.C. preeminent gathering of Beltway, showbiz and media elite.

Image
Grateful Dead members Bobby Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, and Phil Lesh had been considering a reunion to celebrate the band’s 60th anniversary in 2025, and even had plans on the books to rehearse. Unfortunately, those plans are now in flux following Lesh’s passing on October 25th.

Weir, Kreutzmann, and Hart spoke with Anthony Mason of CBS This Morning in an interview that took place just five days after Lesh’s death.

“I was hoping that we could play with him again one more time,” Kreutzmann said. “So that, that was my sadness…’Cause I know he wanted to play with us again too.”

“We were kickin’ it around,” Weir added. “In fact, we were gonna, we were gonna get together and, and kick some songs around tomorrow.”

Mickey Hart Pens Tribute to Phil Lesh: ‘He Was Singular, an Original, Nobody Sounded Like Him’
Image
Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart penned a tribute to his longtime band mate Phil Lesh following the death of the group’s founding bassist Friday at the age of 84.

“Phil Lesh changed my life. There are only a few people you meet in your lifetime that are special, important, who help you grow spiritually as well as musically,” Hart wrote. Like Bob Weir, Hart credited Lesh with exposing the members of the Grateful Dead to music that would inspire the band’s legendary improvisational style.

On social media, the guitarist credited Lesh with introducing him to much of the music that would inform his own playing style, as well as influence the Dead’s improvisational music.

“At the age of seventeen, I listened to the John Coltrane Quartet, focusing on McCoy Tyner’s work, feeding Coltrane harmonic and rhythmic ideas to springboard off of – and I developed an approach to guitar playing based off of it.

Phil Lesh Was the Uncompromising Embodiment of the Grateful Dead
Image
The moment could arrive anywhere, anytime, but you always knew it was coming. It was the moment, at a Grateful Dead show or on a live recording, when Phil Lesh and his bass would make themselves known.

Most bass players in traditional rock & roll bands provide a solid low-end foundation for what’s around then. Maybe they sing an occasional harmony or are content with a supportive, background role. That was never the case with Lesh. At some point, whether in early jams on “China Cat Sunflower” or “Dark Star...

Nobody Has Ever Loved Rhythm More Than the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart
Image
No two Grateful Dead concerts are ever alike, but the point where they fully diverge from reality as we know it is often the same. Five songs into the second set, the band sets their instruments down and all non-rhythm section members — in its current iteration as Dead & Company, that includes longtime frontman and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, lead guitarist and vocalist John Mayer, and keyboard wizard Jeff Chimenti — exit the stage. The extensive drum interlude sees them devising a new beat from scratch, mirroring how our tribal ancestors created music in the first place.

Soon after, two more people exit the stage. The section of the show referred to as “Drums” on every setlist is over,...
