How Heidi Klum and Tiësto Gave a Classic Eighties Song a ‘Whole New Life’
Image
Heidi Klum remembers her rebel days as a teenager working at a club named Checker’s in Düsseldorf. She can still hear the pulsing synths of Eighties songs blasting from the dance floor as she stood behind the bar making coffee for guests, even though she was way too young to be working there. “With hair and makeup you can always make yourself look a little older,” she says with a giggle.

Fast-forward four decades, and Klum’s love for dance music has only grown. Several months ago, the German...

Holiday Gift Guide: 10 Vinyl Soundtracks for the Horror Fan
Image
Music is intrinsically and irrevocably intertwined with cinema; it is never more vital than in horror. What builds mood, tension, and fear better than sound design and an unsettling score?

This Gift Guide is for the music lover. More specifically, it’s for the horror fan that collects vinyl soundtracks, from recent releases to recently unearthed rarities and beyond.

Here’s what you need this year…

The Black Phone Ost

“The score for the film was created by composer Mark Korven, the mastermind behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Into the Tall Grass. Korven is a Toronto-based award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his innovation and experimental approach to film scoring. In 2016, Korven conceived the notorious horror musical instrument, The Apprehension Engine.”

In other words, a unique horror film score worth grabbing on vinyl.

What’s With All the Early ’90s Alt-Rock T-Shirts in ‘Nope’?
Image
Even in a fast-moving film like Jordan Peele’s “Nope,” there are some easter eggs you just can’t ignore — and one that has caught more than a few viewers’ eyes is the bizarre preponderance of characters wearing T-shirts featuring alt-rock bands from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

It starts with the character Angel (Brandon Perea) wearing a Wipers T-shirt — the legendary Portland band beloved by Kurt Cobain. Then you see one with a Mr. Bungle logo — the oddball California group Faith No More singer Mike Patton was originally in, and which he pursued as a parallel career. And by the time you see Emerald (Keke Palmer) prominently wearing a Jesus Lizard T-shirt (above) and O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) wearing a Rage Against the Machine one — and then, for a brief moment, Butthole Surfers and Earth tees flash by — it’s like, “Ok, these aren’t your garden-variety Nirvana tees.

Review: With Nope, Jordan Peele Delivers a Sci-Fi Spectacle and a Much-Needed Hollywood Reckoning
Image
For his third feature, Jordan Peele ambitiously sets out to create a sci-fi spectacle, and he succeeds greatly with the magic he’s able to create in Nope. If there’s one thing I would say to readers out there before I get into the nuts and bolts of Peele’s latest (and just know that there will be no spoilers), it’s that if you think that you’re in for a traditional alien invasion story with Nope, you most definitely are not. For some out there, that might be an issue. But for this writer, that’s probably what I loved about it most. Don’t worry - there’s no bait and switch here. There are aliens. But what Nope really is about are powerful entities that are hellbent on consumption, with little regard for the lives they are affecting, and we see that play out in...

Penelope Disick is cooking in style. Scott Disick took to Instagram on Sunday, Aug. 15 to share a photo of his and Kourtney Kardashian's 9-year-old daughter whipping up a meal. The young chef wore floral pajamas while showing off her culinary expertise and donned some chic sunglasses to avoid tearing up from the red onions. Drawing inspiration from Corey Hart's '80s hit "Sunglasses at Night," Scott captioned the image, "I wear my sunglasses at night So I can, so I can. Chop Onions." ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3: All the Pop Culture References and Homages, Episode by Episode
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” including the finale.]

Another season of “Stranger Things” brings another slew of opportunities to drop pop culture references by avowed cinephiles, the Duffer Brothers. Set in 1985, Season 3 includes plenty of nods to the decade, in addition to various horror and sci-fi films that influenced the more monstrous elements from the Upside Down.

Here’s an episode-by-episode breakdown of all the references and homages in the third season, beyond the Eggo waffles and Dungeons & Dragons that fans already know and love. Unless the songs have particular significance to the story, they won’t be mentioned here but are included in this separate soundtrack post.

“Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy?” “War Games” (1983) – A popular trope in movies that involve high security or nuclear weapons, the real-life two-man rule (or two-keyed lock) shows up at the beginning of the Matthew Broderick hacker movie “War Games” when two soldiers are tasked...

Every Song Featured In Season 3 Of Stranger Things
The very binge-worthy third season of Stranger Things is so good that fans are already clamoring for the next batch of episodes. Of course, the latest chapter in the supernatural saga was filled with plenty of shocking moments and nostalgic references, which were only heightened by the stellar soundtrack in the background.

Each track was specifically chosen to fit both the scene and keep with the time period of the show, and here’s a complete list (put together by the folks at Screen Rant) of every song featured this season, as well as the moments they coincided with:

“Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy?”

“Never Surrender” by Corey Hart: Eleven and Mike kiss in her bedroom. “Rock This Town” by Stray Cats: Townsfolk are having fun in the community pool. “Workin’ For A Livin'” by Huey Lewis and The News: Nancy hurries to work to deliver lunch. “She...

‘Stranger Things’: All the Songs in a Hits-Heavy Season 3 – Listen
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Perhaps you’re aware that the television program “Stranger Things” is set in the decade of the 1980s.

If the copious cans of New Coke and neon clothing aren’t enough of a clue, the show has also stuffed its runtime with plenty of era-appropriate tunes. The opening episodes are drenched in ’80s standbys, with the first handful of chapters backed by familiar hits and less-obvious tracks from the time. Bonus points to the show for picking a Corey Hart song that isn’t “Sunglasses at Night,” even if the pull of the Stray Cats is pretty much inevitable.

Not all these tunes come from the decade in which the show’s set. For every Huey Lewis track, there’s one from Jim Croce. For every Wham! classic, there’s a chorus of bygone well-wishers singing a song that a Kubrick classic already nabbed for its own. (And it takes...

‘Stranger Things’ Details Season 3 Soundtrack
Madonna at an event for 55th BFI London Film Festival (2011)
A day after the premiere of its highly-anticipated third season, the Stranger Things 3 soundtrack has dropped via Legacy Recordings.

The non-original soundtrack oozes in Eighties circa-1985 nostalgia with tracks like Madonna’s “Material Girl,” Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Workin’ for a Livin'” by Huey Lewis & the News. The Cars’ “Moving in Stereo,” which – in a nod to the classic scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High – plays while Lifeguard Billy makes his steamy entrance to the Hawkins Pool, also appears on the track list.

The soundtrack is now available digitally,...

Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere Recap: Suddenly Last Summer — Plus, [Spoiler] Is Attacked!
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Warning: Only a mouth breather wouldn’t assume that the following recap would contain spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Stranger Things. But just in case, you’ve been warned.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same” seemed to be the underlying theme of Stranger Things’ Season 3 premiere. For, although a whole lot about Hawkins was different in the summer of ’85 — the Starcourt Mall was devouring local businesses, Mike and El were joined at the lips, and Dustin had a girlfriend (or so he claimed!) — a whole lot was, for better or worse, familiar. Joyce was still...

'Stranger Things' Season 2: Here's a guide to 1984 in pop culture
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Just in case you've been living in the Upside Down, let me get you up to speed: Stranger Things Season 2 is officially happening. And as revealed by the show's unreasonably-attractive creators the Duffer Brothers, the new episodes will be set a year after the events of the first season, which would place the characters squarely in the latter days of 1984 (Season 1 took place between November and December of 1983). While that's not a whole lot later, it's still enough time for a massive number of pop-culture and consumer products to have been introduced in the interim, from film to TV to music to technology. So what, pray tell, will Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Jonathan and Steve (but not Barb, obvs) be using, watching, wearing, reading and listening to in the new season that wouldn't have been available to them in the prior timeline because they didn't exist yet? For those curious...

Will Cyndi Lauper win a second Grammy 29 years later?
Cyndi Lauper
After winning Best Musical at the Tony Awards this summer, Cyndi Lauper's "Kinky Boots" now competes at the Grammys for Best Musical Theater Album. Can it triumph again? Lauper made her Grammy Awards debut in 1984, winning Best New Artist against Corey Hart, Sheila E., Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and The Judds.  She is one of only of eight artists to be nominated for the top four categories in the General Field and win Best New Artist. The others are Bobbi Gentry (1967), Christopher Cross (1980), Tracy Chapman (1988), Mariah Carey (1990), Paula Cole (1997), Amy Winehouse (2007), and Fun. (2012). Lauper has received 14 nominations in various genres fields ranging from Pop to Rock to Dance to Blues to Arranging. All but one of those bids resulted in losses, but this year she may add Musical Show to her diverse list of Grammy field nods. “The Carrie Diaries” 2.02. Never Surrender
Previously, on The Carrie Diaries.

So it’s been three weeks since Samantha F*ckin Jones moved into the apartment, and things are going great. Well, there is the teensy problem of Sam being the Houseguest From Hell. But it isn’t that bad … sure, she leaves all her crap scattered all over, and has shady deliveries of fake Rolexes … and walks around naked, bending over to reveal what will one day become a NYC historical landmark … but Walt can handle it.

Besides, he’s got more important things on his mind. His 18th birthday is just days away, and that means he can finally be with Manhattan Gay Bennet (with one T). He wants to be subtle about it, though, so Carrie offers to get the gang together that weekend, that way there’ll be less pressure on him then an awkward “you can do me now, I’m legal” meeting with Bennet.

Miley Cyrus Gently Points Out It’s “Pretty Blatant” The Jonas Bros. “Wedding Bells” Is About Her

Oh man, this is like Taylor Swift and John Mayer all over again. Except fortunately, this time no one has to be John Mayer!

“So, you can’t ever hate...

Pink and Kristanna At It Again
Singer Pink proved her attraction to Kristanna Loken was more than just a one night stand when she was again spotted getting cozy with the leggy blonde. The stunning pair were snapped sharing lusty dance floor kisses at a party in Monte Carlo on Saturday night, and the next night they continued their antics at exclusive nightclub Jimmy'z. The "Get The Party Started" rock chick and the Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines stunner again got cozy on the dance floor, sharing an intimate moment as they gazed into each other's eyes. A fellow clubber says, "They barely came up for air this time. They were rubbing against each other and hands were everywhere. Pink went mad when she spotted a photographer and dragged Kristanna into a dark corner for a bit of privacy, but it wasn't long before they were in full view of everyone again." Pink, who recently split from long-time love Corey Hart, is said to be dating Rancid rocker Lars Frederiksen.
