The Lone Ranger isn't terrible popular among newer generations -- the spectacular failure of the 2013 "Lone Ranger" feature film cemented that notion -- but for many Baby Boomers, the character is a vital pop culture figure. For those who may need a refresher, The Lone Ranger is a masked vigilante who toured the Old West with his Indigenous American compatriot Tonto, writing wrongs on a freelance basis. He was previously a Texas Ranger (hence his moniker), rode a horse named Silver, and dispatched bad guys with specially made silver bullets.
The Lone Ranger first appeared as the protagonist of a 1933 radio serial co-created by Fran Striker and George W. Trendle, which broadcasted on Wxyz out of Detroit, Michigan. This radio show was popular enough to warrant a "Lone Ranger" TV series, which is what really thrust the titular character into the pop culture zeitgeist as it ran for 221 episodes over nine years.

The Lone Ranger made his debut on a Detroit radio station in 1933, invented by either the station's owner, George W. Trendle, or the show's writer, Fran Striker. (There's some debate on the matter.) As fans of Westerns will know, The Lone Ranger was a masked vigilante who operated in the wilds of 19th century America, tracking down criminals with his best friend, a man named Tonto. Tonto's origins were never made wholly clear, although he's most likely Apache, Comanche, or Potawatomi. The Lone Ranger rode a horse named Silver, and used silver bullets to dispatch his victims.
The Lone Ranger's origin story is the stuff of comic book lore. The Ranger's older brother and a posse of other Texas Rangers were on the trail of an evil criminal named Cavendish, when, thanks to a betrayal, Cavendish got the drop on them. Cavendish killed them all, but left a young boy alive.

Prince Harry is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with the New York Police Department’s handling of the May 2023 “near-fatal” paparazzi chase involving himself and Meghan Markle.
According to the Daily Mail, a member of Harry’s security team has sent letters to high-ranking NYPD officials expressing the Duke’s suspicion of a potential cover-up. These concerns stem from the NYPD’s initial downplaying of the incident and the subsequent lack of arrests despite assurances that sufficient evidence existed to proceed.

The Sussexes have consistently maintained that they were subjected to a “relentless pursuit” by paparazzi, claiming “multiple near collisions” with other vehicles and pedestrians. However, the NYPD initially downplayed the incident, stating there were “no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests.”

The Western genre follows a classic, nostalgic formula. Full of iconic gunslingers, dangerous outlaws, and well-meaning sheriffs, these stories are thrilling at every turn and a great watch for anyone hoping to see a heroic battle in the rugged landscape of the Wild West, potentially in the form of one of pop culture's best non-movie Westerns. Hollywood has maintained its fascination with this niche genre, turning out Western TV shows like the Paramount hit Yellowstone and HBO's Westworld, both of which ran for multiple seasons and found a dedicated fan base.
Though classic Westerns are often looked to as relics of Hollywood's past, many modern Western TV shows would not exist without classic movies and shows that streamlined the genre. In fact, some franchises have even gone on to see new popular adaptations, such as Zorro and The Lone Ranger, due to their influence. Beyond their genre-defining effects, some classic...

Several actors have played characters who, if put in a room together, would likely hate each other. Versatility is one of the best tools an actor can have, allowing them to blend into and embody whatever role they're given. Some famous actors like Sir John Hurt and David Tennant are known for their chameleon-like acting skills, so much so that their range of characters can seem hilarious when placed next to each other. Some of their characters could simply never get along.
Twitter user Kevstermania recently started a thread about this very idea, placing Spider-Ham from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Jack Horner from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish next to one another. Both Spider-Ham and Jack Horner are voiced by actor John Mulaney and this example displays perfectly the concept of one actor playing diametrically opposed characters who would frustrate each other.

With the recent release of Netflix's The Sandman receiving widespread critical and fan acclaim, it's easy to get nostalgic for fiction from past eras as continues to weigh heavily across the pop culture landscape. While much of the current zeitgeist takes its inspiration from the pages of Marvel and DC, there's also a vast array of small and big screen adaptations derived from the glory days of daily newspaper print comic strips.
A few of these include Peanuts holiday animated specials, Archie live-action shows like Riverdale, movies like Dick Tracy, Popeye, and Dennis The Menace, and Adult Swim offerings like The Boondocks. Gen X and Baby Boomers alike fondly remember the heyday of '80s comic strips.

A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.
The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.
“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

Blaxploitation made its move on the horror market with Aip’s Blacula (1972); so successful was the foray that the money wheels started turning towards a follow up. And while Aip was busy cooking up a sequel to their surprise hit, an outsider saw an opening in the window of the American Dream and leapt right through. Frank Saletri may have been a lawyer by trade, but his heart belonged to horror and he gave his all to write and produce Blackenstein (1973) – a movie somewhat better than its godawful reputation, restored for posterity on Blu-ray by the fine folks at Severin Films. Come for the monster; stay to hear Saletri’s story.

Born in St. Louis on May 27, 1911, iconic actor Vincent Price retained a special fondness for his place of origin, and that love was reciprocated with Vincentennial, a celebration of his 100th birthday in his hometown back in May of 2011 (for summary of all the Vincentennial activities go Here). One of the guests of honor at Vincentennial was Vincent Price’s daughter Victoria Price. Because of their close relationship and her access to his unpublished memoirs and letters, Victoria Price was able to provide a remarkably vivid account of her father’s public and private life in her essential book, Vincent Price, a Daughter’s Biography, originally published in 1999. .In 2011, her biography of her father was out of print. but now it’s been re-issued and Victoria will be in St. Louis this weekend (October 9th – 10th) for three special events. In addition to the biography, she will also be signing...

Move over Buffy and watch your back Drusilla. James Marsters is looking for some new co-stars to share the stage with him this Christmas... and it could be you.
James has a performance in mind at his show in London this December that requires the acting talents of several people from the audience.
This is his only European event this year and he says he is determined to make it extra special. See my earlier article for more information and go to www.jamesmarsterslive.com for booking details.
In the run-up to the festive date, we had chance for an exclusive Q&A with James, where he shared his thoughts on the films and shows in which he's appeared - including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Caprica, Torchwood and Smallville - as well as revealing his sci-fi favourites.
What does he think of the plans for a new Buffy movie? Would he return to Torchwood?...

Witchfinder General will play at the Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival in a 35mm print at 7:00pm tonight, Thursday, May 26th at Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University. Admission is free.
It’s likely that Vincent Price never delivered a better performance than the one he gave in Witchfinder General (1968), the fact-based story of infamous witchhunter Matthew Hopkins and the barbaric acts he practiced in mid-17th century England. Price completely jettisoned his usual campy theatrics in favor of an appropriately low-key, sinister, and menacing depiction of a purely evil man who hides behind a mask of religious allegiance. Price plays Hopkins as an unmerciful fiend with a genteel manner and an appetite for torture, especially burning. The movie is cruel in its violence but also intelligent and effective and Price is relatively restrained in a complex role as a man who whose mission is to achieve...

Champagne For Caesar will play at the Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival in a 35mm print at 7:00pm tonight, Tuesday, May 24th at Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University followed by The Baron Of Arizona at 9:15. With introductions and a post-film discussion of .Champagne for Caesar. by Washington U. film & media lecturer Hunter Vaughan. Admission is free.
Many works of fiction have been said to be ahead of their time. In the world of motions pictures few are more prophetic than the 1950 comedy classic Champagne For Caesar. By that year, mind you, quiz shows were popular on radio and that young upstart television, but by the end of the decade these programs would inspire a national craze ( and a scandal later depicted in Robert Redford’s film Quiz Show ). Caesar foreshadows all this while showcasing some delightful performances by actors generally not known for big screen comedies.

Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) is to direct the feature, in which Johnny Depp will play native American sidekick Tonto. The title role hasn't yet been cast.
Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio worked on a previous draft of the screenplay.
The character is well-known from long-running TV and radio shows, notably the 1949-1957 series starring Clayton Moore (and later John Hart) as The Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto.
In the story, a group of Texas Rangers are ambushed as they hunt down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The solo survivor of the attack is found and nursed back to health by an American Indian named Tonto.

The 'Other' Lone Ranger Dies
John Hart, the man who replaced Clayton Moore as TV's wild west hero The Lone Ranger, has died, aged 91.
Hart battled dementia in his latter years and passed away at his home in Rosarito Beach, Mexico on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
A California native, Hart launched his Hollywood career in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1938 film The Buccaneer.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he landed the title role in the 1947 TV series Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy and took over from Moore as The Lone Ranger for 52 episodes of the popular family show.
He was the perfect choice for the role - because he worked as a cowboy as a teenager, and had joined the cast of the show to work with a nervous Silver, the Lone Ranger's horse.
Hart gave up the role of The Lone Ranger when Moore returned to the show, but he played the masked hero again in a 1981 episode of The Greatest American Hero and in a 1982 episode of Happy Days.
He also starred in Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans, alongside horror movie icon Lon Chaney Jr....

There's a new big screen adaptation of the popular Lone Ranger character in the works and an unusual casting choice has been announced.
The Lone Ranger is the 1930s creation of Fran Striker. The Ranger is a masked avenger from the old west who seeks to help those in need. He's aided by his faithful white steed, Silver, and his American Indian friend, Tonto. The characters were first introduced to the public in a 1933 radio series that ran for more than 20 years. The Lone Ranger became such a hit that the characters were soon featured in movie serials, novels, comic strips, and comic books.
The character is likely best remembered for the half-hour Lone Ranger television series that began in 1949. Clayton Moore played the Ranger with Jay Silverheels as Tonto. Midway through the show's run, Moore had a dispute with the show's producers and he was replaced by actor John Hart for two years.
