Ed and Lorraine Warren have one final case to crack in the iconic “The Conjuring” franchise. The paranormal investigating duo, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, first appeared onscreen in 2013; now 12 years and a slew of spinoff films later, the original “The Conjuring” will close out with “The Conjuring: The Last Rites.”

Michael Chaves returns to direct “The Last Rites.” In total, the franchise has three “Conjuring” films, three “Annabelle” features, two “Nun” movies, and “The Curse of La Llorona.” Chaves helmed “La Llorona,” “The Nun II,” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” A “Conjuring” series is in development at Max as well.

“The Last Rites” is set in the mid-1980s when the Warrens were retired. However, the couple returns for one last case involving the Smurl family. The Warrens most famously investigated the 1976 hauntings in Amityville, New York, which inspired the “Amityville Horror” franchise.

The Conjuring Franchise Might Mimic the MCU After Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga's Final Film

New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener teases a "phase two" for The Conjuring Universe.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Brener was asked how much further The Conjuring Universe can reasonably be expected to go in the future. "It's testing through the roof and we're only at the director's cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you're normally very, very scared about the status of your film," Brener said of the next film in the franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites. "We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof. So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more." When asked if this meant that a Marvel Cinematic Universe-style "phase two" was in the works, Brener responded, "Phase two is Tbd."

The Conjuring Universe kicked off with director James Wan's 2013 film,...

The Enfield Poltergeist trailer: documentary on case that inspired The Conjuring 2 is coming to Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ has announced that they will be releasing the four-part documentary The Enfield Poltergeist – which tells about the case that served as inspiration for The Conjuring 2 – on October 27th, just in time for Halloween viewings. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the docu-series, and you can check it out in the embed above.

According to Deadline, The Enfield Poltergeist relies on more than 250 hours of audio archive to help recreate the infamous events in Enfield. Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.

The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

Why Die Hard 6 Was Canceled
Image
Die Hard started out with low expectations and mixed reviews, but it became a beloved classic and a major success at the box office. Die Hard cemented Bruce Willis as an industry icon and introduced Alan Rickman as a talented actor. Die Hard 6 was canceled due to the poor reception of the previous film, the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney, and Willis's retirement from the industry, but there are rumors of a reboot in the works.

When Die Hard hit theaters back in 1988, hopes weren't particularly high. And not only that: the reviews following its release weren't necessarily brilliant either. However, as years went by, everyone's perception of John McTiernan's film improved significantly, and Die Hard became one of the greatest classics of the action genre, shaping films of all kinds to this day.

How The Conjuring Created Its Own Horror Cinematic Universe
Image
It has been a decade since The Conjuring snuck up on moviegoers during the summer of 2013 and generated big frights along with big box office dollars. On its own, the film stands as one of the best horror films of the 2010s, but what couldn't have been known to horror fans at the time was the world-building that was in store as this one movie would spark its own horror cinematic universe that has generated $2.1 billion at the global box office.

What makes The Conjuring so much more appealing than some of its horror movie counterparts is that it has a connection to true, although dramatized, events. Ed and Lorraine Warren were real-life paranormal investigators who assisted people that claimed to be terrorized by spirits or demons. Their work resulted in thousands of cases that intrigued anyone interested in the supernatural or those who wanted to prove that the Warrens were frauds.

Tales From The Box Office: 10 Years Ago, The Conjuring Kicked Off The Biggest Non-Marvel Cinematic Universe
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

Will There Be A House Of Wax 2?
Image
The 2005 horror movie House of Wax is about siblings stumbling upon a creepy wax museum and there have been questions about a sequel for years. Nick (Chad Michael Murray) and Carly's (Elisha Cuthbert) road trip takes them to a small town called Ambrose where they meet Bo (Brian Van Holt), who owns Trudy's House of Wax. By the time the main characters realize that Bo kills people and turns them into wax figures, they have to fight for survival. The reveal of Bo's twin brother Vincent is one of the more frightening aspects of the movie, which is a remake of the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum.

While the movie didn't do well at the box office, curiosity about Paris Hilton's House of Wax role brought the film attention, and it is considered an entertaining story. The movie also marked Jared Padalecki's first horror role before the...

The Conjuring 4 Confirmed With Previous Writer Returning
Image
The Conjuring 4 has officially tapped the screenwriter of the previous two films to return for another terrifying outing. Although The Conjuring Universe has expanded to include films following such other supernatural threats as Annabelle and its two follow-up films, The Nun and its upcoming sequel, and The Curse of La Llorona, the core series is still going strong after debuting in 2013 with James Wan's The Conjuring, which was a massive hit, making 319.5 million off a budget of 20 million. All three Conjuring films follow the exploits of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, as played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

The original Conjuring, which took place in 1970 and featured a cold open involving the haunted doll Annabelle, followed the couple to a secluded farmhouse with a dark past that was being beset by a terrifying entity. The 2016 sequel The Conjuring 2 followed them to a poltergeist-infested house in...

The Conjuring 2: James Wan shares video of the demon that was replaced by The Nun
Image
The evil nun featured in director James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 (watch it Here) got her own spin-off movie that was appropriately called The Nun (watch that one Here), and now The Nun 2 is heading toward a September 2023 release. But it’s a well known story by now that the nun wasn’t originally intended to be in The Conjuring 2. She was a last minute replacement for a winged demon – and Wan has just shared a video of that demon on his Instagram page! You can check it out in the embed below, along with the following explanation:

The original Valak in The Conjuring 2 was going to be this winged demon. A beautifully/hideously sculpted animatronic puppet head and practical body-suit by the super talented @justin.raleigh (whom I’ve worked with on pretty much all my movies since Insidious 1) and his team @fracturedfxinc. worn by @j_bishara.

Underrated Haunting Movies To Watch If You Loved The Conjuring
James Wan
Whether you love or hate James Wan's "The Conjuring," it's impossible to deny the impact the 2013 film had on horror. Wan fused atmospheric scares with Joseph Bishara's string-filled and spine-tingling score to craft a part-haunted house, part-possession film that jump-scared its way into earning more than 320 million at the worldwide box office. By 2021, "The Conjuring" franchise has earned 2 billion, as confirmed by Deadline.

While "The Conjuring" was marketed as a story based on true events, Wan and co-writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes took several creative liberties when bringing the Warrens' investigation of the Perrons' family house to life. (For example, the film's exorcism...

Where to Give the Devil His Due in The Conjuring's latest - "The Devil Made Me Do It:" A Film Review
*there are spoilers here* Director: Michael Chaves. Writers: David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, James Wan, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. As entertainment, The Conjuring franchise does a commendable job in playing upon the tropes which makes some horror films great. The latest installment, "The Devil Made Me Do It," is a reasonable continuation to which I'm waiting for all the parts to come together on. It's not the same as the prior works, as it depends on more action than exploration (i.e. the haunted house trope), but I was glad to see the Kolchak style change. The directors can liberally copy from other films with recognizable The Exorcist (1973)or Poltergeist (1982) moments as much as they want and include as many obligatory jump scares to the film, and I'm okay with it. As a statement on whether Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are paranormal investigators...

Vikram Bhatt’s next gets a Hollywood touch

The Omen Prequel Reportedly In The Works At Disney
Image
When Disney finally completed their takeover of Fox, the Mouse House inherited a huge amount of high-profile properties, but given their established brand reputation, it seemed difficult to imagine the family-friendly multimedia empire taking a chance and rebooting R-rated franchises like Die Hard, Predator and Alien.

Longtime fans would no doubt balk at the idea of Disney tackling brands that had always been adult orientated, but the studio may have found a loophole through the rebranded 20th Century Studios. While the Walt Disney Pictures division will always be associated with the standard fare that saw the company ascend to the very top of the industry, an offshoot presents the ideal opportunity for them to diversify their output and venture into previously uncharted territory.

The latest unexpected title to be getting the Disney treatment is The Omen, the classic horror series that began in 1976 and spawned three sequels, a remake and...

Chad Hayes Lists His Malibu Writing Retreat
Image
Screenwriter Chad Hayes, one-half of the Hayes Brothers writing duo who scripted the horror films “House of Wax” and “The Conjuring,” has put his writing retreat in the prestigious Point Dume area of Malibu up for sale at not quite $1.25 million. Slated to pen “McClane,” the upcoming prequel (and final installment) to the money-minting “Die Hard” franchise, Hayes bought the neo-Mediterranean townhouse condo just over five years ago for a small amount over $1 million.

Jointly listed with Catherine Bindley at Sotheby’s Intl. Realty and Debbie Kester at Douglas Elliman, the almost 2,300-square-foot multilevel townhome is offered fully furnished, and the two-bedroom and 2.5 bathroom hideaway is alternatively available as a rental at $7,000 per month.

A spacious entrance gallery enhanced by high ceilings and terra-cotta floor tiles steps up to the main floor where a spacious living room has honey-toned wood floors and a raised-hearth fireplace set at an angle to the otherwise boxy room.

Sundance 2020 Interview: Producer Doug McKay Talks Upcoming Lalaurie Mansion Film Project & Collaborating with Writers Carey & Chad Hayes
If you’ve ever taken a ghost tour in New Orleans, chances are you’ve made a stop at the Lalaurie Mansion, which is the site of the atrocious behaviors of socialite Delphine Lalaurie, who tortured and murdered slaves on the now-infamous property. As it turns out, the Lalaurie Mansion is set to be the centerpiece for an upcoming horror project which will be written by veteran scribes Carey and Chad Hayes, and while in Park City for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, this writer had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers for the project, Doug McKay, who gave us some insights into what we can expect from the upcoming film.

Great to speak with you, Doug. I’m familiar with the Lalaurie Mansion, as I toured it years ago on a ghost tour, and it was extremely creepy. What can you tell us about what’s already...

Box Office: ‘Bad Boys for Life,’ ‘1917’ Shoot Past $100 Million
Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are showing plenty of staying power at North American multiplexes with about $31 million for its second weekend, estimates showed Saturday.

Sony’s third installment of the “Bad Boys” action comedy franchise is crossing the $100 million mark at the box office on Saturday, its ninth day of release, and will finish the weekend at about $117 million. “Bad Boys for Life” topped expectations over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with $73 million and has jolted the North American box office back to life after a disappointing 2019 saw a 4% overall decline.

Universal’s fifth frame of World War I epic “1917” will finish second with about $14.1 million at 3,937 sites amid plenty of awards season buzz, including receiving 10 Academy Award nominations and the top film award from the Producers Guild of America on Jan. 18. “1917” will also cross the $100 million mark this weekend.

Box Office: ‘Bad Boys for Life’ to Lead Weekend With $26 Million
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life” is dominating North American moviegoing with about $26 million at 2,155 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

Universal’s World War I epic “1917” will finish at a distant second with about $13 million in the wake of receiving 10 Academy Award nominations and the top film award from the Producers Guild of America on Jan. 18.

Stx’s launch of Matthew McConaughey crime comedy “The Gentlemen” is headed for third place with about $10 million — in line with forecasts — after taking in a moderate $725,000 at 1,885 North American locations on Thursday night. Universal’s second weekend of its costly family adventure “Dolittle” appears to be finishing fourth with between $9 million and $10 million. That leaves the Robert Downey Jr. vehicle with about $42 million in its first 10 days in North America.

Sony’s durable “Jumanji: The Next Level” is pegged for fifth place at around $7 million in its seventh weekend. That should edge...

Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud (2012)
Box Office: ‘The Gentlemen’ Opens With $725,000 on Thursday Night
Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud (2012)
Stx’s Matthew McConaughey crime comedy “The Gentlemen” has opened with a moderate $725,000 at 1,885 North American locations on Thursday night.

Horror thriller “The Turning” launched with $425,000 at 2,200 sites on Thursday night. The movie, based on Henry James’ 1898 novella “The Turn of the Screw,” stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince.

Neither new entry is expected to top Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life,” which has over-performed with $83 million domestically in its first six days. The third installment in the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence franchise beat expectations over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with $73 million and could add another $30 million during its second session.

“The Gentlemen” has been pegged to earn around $10 million when it debuts in 2,100 theaters. That would be a solid start, since Stx shelled out $7 million to buy U.S. rights from Miramax. McConaughey stars as an American expat looking to cash out of the...

‘The Turning’ Review: Mackenzie Davis Burns Up Feminist Twist on ‘The Innocents’
Jennifer Kent
Ever since #MeToo opened the world’s eyes to the horrors of toxic masculinity, horror filmmakers — particularly female ones — have been finding increasingly creative ways to imbue their work with fears unique to women. This past year alone, both Jennifer Kent’s “The Nightingale” and Sophia Takal’s “Black Christmas” used rape-revenge tropes as plot points, though to vastly different degrees of success.

In her stylish if not entirely bone-chilling new movie “The Turning,” director Floria Sigismondi shrewdly updates Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” to haunt her young protagonist with unwanted male attention and obsession. Updating the story that inspired Jack Clayton’s 1961 classic “The Innocents,” which followed the text more closely,

The film’s opening hews closely enough to the original novella, as the fresh-faced Kate (Mackenzie Davis) accepts an unusual position as governess for absurdly wealthy orphan Flora (Brooklynn Prince), who lives in an extravagant manor home.

Film Review: ‘The Turning’
Floria Sigismondi TIFF
Director Floria Sigismondi’s “The Turning” is like the alt-rock cousin of author Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw.” From its grunge-infused soundtrack and period setting to its fiery feminist overtones, this is an ambitious contemporary take on the iconic, claustrophobic thriller. Concerning two young orphans who psychologically torment their caretaker in a spooky, sprawling mansion, it comes across as a fuzzy, frayed adaptation courtesy of a gimmicky, ambiguous climax that undermines the journey. Lacking spine-tingling dread, taut tension, and the deservingly provocative ending needed to make its modern sentiments land, this re-imagining is less than a classic.

Bubbly teacher Kate (Mackenzie Davis) has taken a position at Bly Manor as governess for 7-year-old Flora (Brooklynn Prince), who’s suffering from trauma associated with the death of her parents outside the gates of the palatial estate. The family’s former live-in nanny, Miss Jessel (Denna Thomsen), abruptly left...

‘The Turning’ Film Review: Mackenzie Davis Grapples With Ghosts and an Unflattering Hairdo
Guy Pearce and Sorcha Groundsell in The Innocents (2018)
Henry James’s novella “The Turn of the Screw” has inspired many screen adaptations, most notably Jack Clayton’s “The Innocents,” which starred Deborah Kerr, and a live TV version with Ingrid Bergman that was directed by John Frankenheimer. In the early ’70s, Marlon Brando headlined a memorably nasty prequel called “The Nightcomers,” and movies from this story have been made all over the world. You have to go out of your way to screw up this material.

“The Turning” is an adaptation of “The Turn of the Screw” that takes place in 1994; we hear over the radio that Kurt Cobain has just committed suicide as we meet our heroine Kate (Mackenzie Davis), a cheerful, slightly nerdy woman who has just received a job as a nanny to an orphaned young girl and boy. In most versions of this story, the governess goes to meet the uncle of these orphans,...

Review: The Turning Hits Some Highs, But Falls Short in its Ending
If you read my piece on The Innocents from last October, then you know that I’m a pretty big fan of both Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw as well as Jack Clayton’s timeless 1961 adaptation, which means that I am the prime audience for Floria Sigismondi’s new take on this classic tale, The Turning. And for the most part, I really enjoyed what Sigismondi as well as screenwriters Carey and Chad Hayes were able to bring to the table here, with Floria’s visual flair adding a lot to the material, and a trio of strong performances from the film’s lead actors: Mackenzie Davis, Brooklynn Prince, and Finn Wolfhard.

Where The Turning ended up falling a bit short for me was in its finale, where the pieces of the narrative’s puzzle don’t quite all lock together in the film’s final moments. But overall,...

New Horror Franchise Based on the Lalaurie Mansion Coming from Co-Writers of The Conjuring
After stepping into the haunted homes of the Perron and Hodgson families, respectively, in the first two Conjuring movies, screenwriters Chad and Carey Hayes are now opening the door to another real-life location with a haunted past in a new horror franchise based on the Lalaurie Mansion in New Orleans:

Press Release: From the creators of The Conjuring franchise, Chad and Carey Hayes, and Faster Horse Pictures’ Cindy Bond and Doug McKay in tandem with Michael Whalen, a team with experience working on The Zodiak, Shutter Island and The Black Swan, comes a new horror film franchise based on the infamous house and property known as The Lalaurie Mansion – one of the most haunted houses in the world. Despite there being no public access inside the property since 1932 (for a reason!), thousands of people travel to New Orleans each year just to get a roadside glimpse of the notorious home.

‘The Conjuring’ Writers Developing Horror Films Based on Haunted Lalaurie Mansion
The Conjuring (2013)
The writers of “The Conjuring” films Chad and Carey Hayes are developing a new horror franchise of films inspired by the stories of the haunted Lalaurie Mansion in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

The two brothers will tell the history of the house and its crazed owner, Madame Delphine Lalaurie across multiple film installments, and the intention is for principal photography to begin in 2020.

The Lalaurie Mansion is considered one of the most haunted houses in the world and has been closed to the public since 1932, but it remains a popular tourist attraction. The house’s owner Madame Lalaurie was a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who tortured and murdered enslaved persons hidden away in her house all while being the center of attention as the host of extravagant parties.

‘The Conjuring’ Creators Chad & Carey Hayes Team With Faster Horse Pictures On ‘Lalaurie Mansion’ Horror Franchise
Cindy Bond
Exclusive: Chad and Carey Hayes, the creators of the mega-successful Conjuring franchise, are teaming with Cindy Bond and Doug McKay’s recently launched outfit Faster Horse Pictures on a series of haunted mansion horror movies.

The planned franchise will be built around the real-life Lalaurie Mansion in New Orleans, one of the most notorious ‘haunted houses’ in the world, which hasn’t allowed any public access since 1932. Despite that, thousands of tourists still travel to the city every year to visit the property.

The house was made infamous by its resident Madame Lalaurie, a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who tortured and murdered numerous slaves there in the early 1800s. After her crimes were exposed following a house fire in 1834, she fled the city and was never arrested.

The building has had several owners but is now owned by Michael Whalen,...
