The theme song of The Big Bang Theory, The History of Everything, performed by the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, became famous as the show itself. The catchy tune, which explained the history of the universe in a few short verses, resonated with fans and is considered one of TV’s most memorable opening songs.

When the rock band recorded the song in 2006, they were already well-established in the music industry. However, the sitcom’s monumental success, which lasted 12 seasons, turned their 3-minute song into a pop culture phenomenon.
For over 15 years, the theme song has brought hefty residuals to the band’s members. However, behind the scenes, the song’s success led to a legal dispute between the band members, that raised questions about royalty distribution and band agreements.

The theme song for "The Big Bang Theory" is a fast-talking deluge of pseudo-nerdy references that are juuust incorrect enough to drive real-life nerds a little big crazy. The full version of the theme, rarely played in its entirety before the show, included enough brainy references to be clever, however. It talks about bipeds evolving, the continent of Pangaea, and it contains the lyric "Australopithecus would really have been sick of us," which I deeply appreciate.
The theme song was written and performed by Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, the authors of the famously wordy 1998 hit "One Week." Gen-Xers can likely recite large portions of "One Week", although only committed Barenaked Ladies fans have memorized the entire thing. The band also had charting hits with "It's All Been Done" (also from 1998) as well as "Pinch Me" and "Too Little Too Late." Those paying attention to indie rock in 1992 likely heard...

Gord Downie’s first solo album, Coke Machine Glow, will be reissued on August 27th via Arts & Crafts to mark its 20th anniversary, and it’s available for preorder. The original album dropped in 2001, in between the Tragically Hip’s 2000 record Music @ Work and 2002’s In Violet Light.

Memorials for Lou Reed, who died yesterday at age 71, have been arriving at Rolling Stone all day. Metric's Emily Haines, who performed alongside Reed for the first time in 2010 and went on to collaborate with him on her band's latest album, Synthetica, has written a touching statement about her personal relationship with the icon. Here's what she told Rolling Stone exclusively about the loss of Reed:

Barenaked Ladies are joining the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Pearl Jam and Motorhead with their own brand of booze entitled "Strong Beer."
The Toronto Star reports the band has joined forces with The Flying Monkeys, craft brewers from Barrie, Ontario, to created the "chocolate-flavoured, strong imperial stout." According to a press release on the band's site, the beer's release will coincide with their "Symphony Barenaked" cross-Canada tour which starts in Vancouver Nov. 30.
Flying Monkeys boss Peter Chiodo -- who said the band were "totally involved in the birth of this beer" -- told the publication he came up with the idea after drinking some of the Pearl Jam beer called Faithfull Ale.
"I thought it would be a lot cooler if there was something where the band actually came into the brewery and helped make it," he said. "It would have more meaning that way."

Steven Page may have avoided jail time, but the Barenaked Ladies singer couldn't escape putting his clothes back on. Following his drug bust and commitment to rehab, Page has parted ways with the band he started with Ed Robertson in 1988. "By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies," a message on the band's official website says. "Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart will continue recording and touring together as Barenaked Ladies. Simple Plan support their brand new song "Save You" with a just-debuted music video. Starting with the band's in-studio performance, the music video continues with a capture of Jay Bouvier, the band's vocalist Pierre Bouvier's brother, and guitarist Jeff Stinco's mother Francine Bergeron-Stinco lying on the floor in a dimmed room alongside the other cancer survivors.
With a scene showing the people get off the floor one by one, Pierre screams verses, "If you fall/Stumble down/I'll pick you up off the ground." At the end of the video, the people, making cameo appearances, are revealed. Some of them are Kevin Hearn, Sharon Osbourne, and Marissa Jaret Winokur.
"Save You" is the third single off the band's self-titled album and penned in tribute to Jay, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer at the age of 28. Produced by Dave Portman, Danja, and Max Martin, the band's latest...

Fox will tune up Barenaked Ladies
Barenaked Ladies' engaging blend of music and comedy is coming to television. Fox Broadcasting Co. has ordered a pilot presentation for a comedy/variety show starring the members of the popular Canadian pop group, known for its playful music style of tongue-in-cheek humor, pop culture lyrics and upbeat tempos. The project, tentatively titled The Barenaked Ladies Variety Show, is set to expand upon the comedy sketches that have become a staple of Barenaked Ladies' concerts along with the quintet's humorous stage banter and improv bits with the audience. The five band members -- Steven Page, Kevin Hearn, Tyler Stewart, Jim Creeggan and Ed Robertson -- will star in the skits as exaggerated versions of themselves, joined by guest actors. The show, in which all elements will be connected by a story line running through each episode, also will include musical performances by the group as well as musical guests.
