Orange is the New Black would have looked a lot different if the show stuck to the original plan for Danielle Brooks' character, Taystee Jefferson, and only kept her around for two episodes. Thankfully, Brooks' performance wowed the showrunners, and Taystee played a huge role in Litchfield.
But every likable character like Taystee, there's an equally unlikable character like former Co, Sam Healy. From outgoing personalities to toxic mother figures, less likable characters make infuriating decisions that impact more than just themselves while the likable characters are touched audiences' hearts with their journeys and growth.
Natalie “Fig” Figueroa
Natalie "Fig" Figueroa is a completely unlikable character. She is mean and cruel toward the inmates, unable to put herself in their shoes. For the better part of the series, she is selfish and overlooks the poor treatment of the inmates and condition of the prison.

Pat Healy (The Post), Melinda McGraw (Outcast) and Michael Harney (Orange Is the New Black) are set to recur opposite Peter Sarsgaard, Kyle Gallner, Kodi Smit-McPhee and David Strathairn in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series true-crime drama Interrogation.
Co-created by Swedish writer-producer Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz, Interrogation is an original concept based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man (Gallner) was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother.
The series’ first nine episodes will be available to binge in any order with each episode structured around an interrogation. The multi-linear approach will give viewers the opportunity to follow their instincts and develop their own interpretations of the facts of the case and ultimately decide innocence or guilt. The season finale will be released at a later date.
Healy will play a criminal defense lawyer representing the young man charged with killing his mother.

The cast of A Star Is Born is filled with some of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. Bradley Cooper stars and directs; Lady Gaga plays the protagonist Ally; the supporting cast includes veteran actors like Sam Elliott and Dave Chappelle. Even stage stars are getting in on it, with Hamilton original cast member Anthony Ramos in a supporting role. But if you're a regular Netflix viewer, there's at least one other actor you'll recognize: Michael Harney, who plays Wolfe, a friend of the father of Gaga's character, Ally.
Like many New York-based actors, Harney's first role on a notable series was on Law & Order in the 1990s. He actually appeared four times over the course of five years - as three separate characters! For the most part, Harney's early career consisted of a lot of law-enforcement-type roles, with an arc as Detective Roberts on NYPD Blue and guest spots on L.

Six episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
There are nearly infinite reasons why Orange Is The New Black has resonated so loudly with so many people in such a short span of time. Its honest characters, juicy drama, and unashamedly blunt depiction of what life in a prison is like (as a woman, a black woman, a Dominican woman, etc) are bound to constitute a few of those. Others might appreciate Jenji Kohan’s masterfully laid-back tone that – after four years – still ebbs and flows into mouth-covering shockers with ease – which makes sense, given the woman essentially created the bedrock of the unforgettable season finale in Weeds.
I like its simple insights. Suzanne, aka Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba), has slowly been getting more to do – and be – since her pie-throwing meme-ifying in season 1 and, as things go downhill for her in season 4, she reminisces about the speechless cues her parents...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

“I don’t know when you’ll see one. It was a good try though,” laughs actor Michael Harney when asked when his character Sam Healy on “Orange is the New Black” would get the show’s signature flashback treatment. Flashbacks have thus far focused on the inmates and Healy is a prison counselor, so that may explain his lack of backstory, but Healy is no minor character. In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Orange Is the New Black isn't just a wildly entertaining series—it's also a means for raising awareness about a breadth of issues, ranging from ageism to sexism to homophobia. Stars Lorraine Toussaint, who plays the villainous Vee, and Michael Harney, who stars as the compassionate Sam Healy, are both keenly aware of the impact the show has had on society and feel extremely grateful to be apart of such an important series. "I'm so proud," Toussaint told E! News at the 2014 Entertainment Weekly pre-Emmy party in Los Angeles last night. "I'm proud to be a part of the show because it's changing the face of television. It's addressing…so many different issues. And...

Throughout most of Orange is the New Black, fans have wondered how a sweet, old nun could be in prison. Episode 11 shows Sister Jane Ingalls (Beth Fowler) from her first days as a nun. When she first began her life as a nun, she attended a protest against war with two other new nuns. One of the women lied to Sister Ingalls and told her that they got permission to go to the protest, but the nuns end up in trouble. After her first taste of protest, Sister gets too involved with other protests because she loves the fame she receives. After protesting often to get notoriety, and writing a book, called “Nun Shall Pass,” Sister is called a narcissist and is excommunicated from the Church.
Now, in Litchfield, Sister goes overboard once again when Soso (Kimiko Glenn) starts a group to protest the prison conditions and the way the...

Although the anti-hero television dramas of the past have been almost consistently compelling, there is a tendency for it to be nothing but a boy’s club that girls aren’t allowed into. Orange is the New Black, however, is a breath of...

Unless you've been living under a pop-culture rock (or, perhaps, have been in prison), odds are that at least one person in your life has gushed to you about Orange Is the New Black. Last July, the first season of Jenji Kohan's dark comedy dropped on Netflix in one giant chunk, and binge-watchers everywhere mainlined all 13 episodes. Who knew women's prison could be so entertaining?

My favorite dramas are those which manage to immerse me in a world strikingly different from but still (in a vicarious but nevertheless potent manner) comparable to my own. Breaking Bad, which started out by exploring the seedy criminal underbelly of modern-day New Mexico, featured dozens of colorful characters (perennial badass Mike Ehrmantraut, refined sociopath Gus Fring) and a highly ambitious central plot (a mild-mannered chemistry teacher comes to rule the meth business with an iron fist) but was never less than addictively believable. To give a more far-out example, Game of Thrones is set in the high-fantasy world of Westeros, but its inhabitants are shockingly relatable as flesh-and-blood human beings, and viewers are quickly able to look past the show’s more fantastical elements to find the compelling, realistic human drama beneath. I’m pleased to say that, for many of the same reasons, I can add Netflix’s hilarious,...
