BBC Developing New Mystery Series Starring Fictionalized Agatha Christie and Other Genre Icons
Image
The BBC is officially developing a whole new kind of Agatha Christie mystery series.

Per Deadline, BBC is set to bring Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, G.K Chesterton, and other famous mystery writers to life in the upcoming series - The Detection Club. The series is reportedly set to be a mystery-of-the-week show revolving around its core cast of fictionalized versions of Christie, Sayers, and Chesterton as they put their deduction skills to use solving actual crimes rather than writing about fictional murders. The series will be produced by BBC Studios Drama Productions, although no details regarding casting or specific crew members have been released.

The very real Detection Club was formed back in 1930, and consisted of members such as Christie, Sayers, Chesterton (the club's first president), John Rhode, Jessie Louisa Rickard, Henry Wade, and Baroness Orczy. The club regularly meets for dinners during which they discuss both the technical...

I Swear (2025)
“We need to get you out…” Trailer lands for ‘I Swear’
I Swear (2025)
Studiocanal today reveals an exclusive look at the first trailer for ‘I Swear,’ based on the remarkable true-life story of Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner, John Davidson.

Diagnosed with Tourette’s at age 15, John Davidson faced and overcame many hardships from adolescence and early adulthood as a result of what was a little-known and entirely misunderstood condition in 1980s Britain.

Written and directed by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee), the film stars Robert Aramayo (The Rings of Power, The King’s Man, Behind Her Eyes) as John Davidson.

Supporting cast includes three-time BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake (Words of War, The Theory of Everything, Say Nothing), BAFTA-winner Shirley Henderson (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Trainspotting), and Cannes Best Actor Award winner & Golden Lion winner Peter Mullan (War Horse, The Magdalene Sisters). ok at the first trailer ‘I Swear,’ based on the remarkable true-life story of Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner,...

I Swear Trailer: Robert Aramayo Learns To Live With Tourette’s In True Story Inspired Drama
Image
To date, Robert Aramayo is an actor probably best known for his work in the fantasy genre space — as The Rings Of Power's Elrond and as Game Of Thrones' young Ned Stark. But in upcoming biopic I Swear, director Kirk Jones' first feature in almost a decade, Juilliard graduate Aramayo is making a major pivot to play Tourette's Syndrome campaigner John Davidson, a man who came of age with the neurological condition in the unforgiving 80s before going on to MBE recognition for his services to raising awareness about it. Check out the trailer for the movie — which, it should go without saying, contains very strong language — below;

On the list of things we didn't think would be heartwarming to hear today, "Spunk for milk!" surely ranks pretty highly — but that it does gives you a pretty good indicator of the tone Jones is going for with his first movie...

New Disney Pixar Movie Earns Toy Story-Level Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Image
Despite its astounding reputation, Pixar has been struggling in recent years, but its recent animated release appears to be a return to its glory days. The studio, which specializes in animated movies, is best known for creating Toy Story (1995), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), and other major franchises. It even specializes in emotional one-off movies, including Up! (2009), Wall-e (2008), and Ratatouille (2007). Those various Pixar films helped to create a sparkling impression of the studio, but it has struggled in recent years.

The 2020s have been a difficult time for Pixar, as several projects have gone straight to streaming, like Turning Red (2022) and Soul (2020). Then, there was a lukewarm reception for movies like Lightyear (2022). Elemental proved to be an exception, as its long legs turned a $30 million opening into an impressive $485 million run. Inside Out 2 (2024) was another major win for the studio, earning $1.7 billion at the box office. While they had impressive totals,...

Elio Will Break a Box Office Record Toy Story Has Held Onto Since 1995 (But Pixar Isn't Celebrating)
Image
Elio has just broken a major Pixar box office record. Unfortunately, it's not one that is worth celebrating.

Per Deadline, after earning $3 million in Thursday previews, Elio is looking at an opening weekend in the range of $22 million. Even if Elio manages to make a few million more than expected, it is not likely that the movie will gross more than the opening weekend of Toy Story ($29.1M), meaning that the latest Pixar movie will become the new record holder for the worst domestic debut in the history of the animation studio.Elio's box office struggles come despite receiving largely positive reviews from critics and audiences. The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% approval rating from critics, and received an excellent A overall CinemaScore.

Elio isn't the first Pixar movie in recent memory to flirt with posting the worst opening weekend for the animation studio. Two years ago,...

Pixar's New Movie Suffers Worst Box Office Opening In Studio History
Image
Elio has broken a longstanding Pixar box office record after three decades. The new animated movie, which was directed by Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Adrian Molina, follows alien-obsessed kid Elio (Yonas Kibreab) being abducted by aliens and befriending the worm-esque Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who helps him defend the intergalactic collective known as the Communiverse when his father Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett) attempts to take it over. The Elio cast also includes Zoe Saldaña as Elio's aunt Olga, Shirley Henderson as liquid supercomputer Ooooo, and Jameela Jamil as Communiverse ambassador Questa.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Elio is projected to close out its opening weekend at the domestic box office with a 3-day debut total of just over $22 million. This will place it at No. 3 on the domestic box office chart for the weekend, behind the new release horror movie 28 Years Later at No. 2 and the live-action remake How...

Elio – Review
Image
They’ve had their time in the sun, so move over live-action adaptations, and make room for a fully animated feature film (so the humans are behind the microphones). After scoring lasr Summer with the box office juggernaut Inside Out 2, the artists of Emoryville, California, are back. But, hold on to your computer monitors, this weekend’s new release is indeed “new”, as in not a sequel. Really, this is a bit of both, or all, worlds as much of this adventure begins on Earth, birthplace of the story’s focus, Elio.

When we first meet the title character, a pre-teen lad called Elio (voice of Yonas Kibreab), he’s having a tough time adjusting to life without his recently departed mother and father. But luckily, he’s been taken in by his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldana), an Air Force major stationed at a base that tracks space debris.

Disney and Pixar on Their Way to Another Hit as Elio Debuts With Enthusiastic Reviews
Image
Disney and Pixar have a new project coming out: Elio. After the massive success the two had last year with Inside Out 2, the new animation comes under a lot of pressure.

However, it looks like Elio can handle it. The original story follows the titular 11-year-old boy into outer space, where he is searching for a bigger meaning as he forms new bonds with alien lifeforms. Ahead of its release in theaters on June 20, Elio debuted with an enthusiastic 83% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. One day ahead of its release on Friday, its scores were even more delightful and in line with other Pixar hits: it officially received the Certified Fresh badge, alongside an 88% approval score out of 90 reviews.

Elio is Pixar's 29th film, and is on its way to becoming a new hit for the studio, as well as its parent company, Disney. "For centuries, people have called...

Pixar’s New Sci-Fi Tearjerker Has Critics Cheering — and the Scores to Prove It
Image
Pixar’s new animated film Elio arrives in U.S. theaters on June 20, 2025, earning largely favorable early reviews, though some critics feel it falls short of the studio’s emotional peaks.

The movie tells the story of a young boy, Elio, who is mistakenly whisked away by aliens and declared Earth’s ambassador. Thrust into the vibrant Communiverse, he must navigate a colorful alien society and find his place among its oddball inhabitants.

Critics highlight the film’s heartfelt themes. Joey Magidson of Awards Radar praised its warmth, calling it “a genuinely sweet and heartwarming film” that shows Pixar’s enduring strength.

Hannah Rose from Cbr noted its emotional resonance, saying it’s “full of relatable themes, including processing grief, the need to belong and found family.” Reviewers also commend the film’s fresh sci-fi world, blending humor, emotion, and striking visuals for a lively family-friendly adventure.

However, not all feedback is glowing.

Pixar’s latest animated movie, Elio, is landing in theaters this week, and early reviews are already in. The film is getting mostly positive reactions, though not everyone is completely sold on it. New Disney Pixar Movie Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score - But Where Does It Rank Among The Classics?
Image
Pixar is a renowned animation studio known for revolutionizing animated movies with groundbreaking technology, along with stories that blend humor and emotion for young audiences and adults. The first Pixar movie was Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature. The studio followed that up by creating more animated classics like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars. After being acquired by Disney in 2006, Pixar continued producing hits, such as Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up, Inside Out, and many more.

However, in recent years, Pixar has experienced a series of disappointments. After Onward underperformed at the box office due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were all sent straight to streaming on Disney+. Lightyear was the first Pixar movie to be released in theaters since Onward, and became a big box-office bomb. However, after Elemental became a sleeper hit, Inside Out 2 went on to...

‘Elio’ Review: Princes of the Universe
Image
There’s a line in Interstellar that’s become something of an ill omen: “We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now, we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.” Because even though films continue to lead us into space, it’s rare that you get one like Pixar’s Elio where characters think of the cosmos in terms of infinite possibility and connection rather than a place where landmark-destroying alien threats come from.

It’s powerful seeing the newly orphaned Elio (Yonas Kibreab) lie down in a NASA museum and hear about the Voyager spacecraft taking the loneliest journey of all humankind’s creations while bathed in the light of the stars. Elio dreams in the wake of loss, and between his sheer, uncontrollable weirdness and the aggravation of being constantly dragged back to Earth by...

‘Elio’ Review: Pixar’s Sci-Fi Spectacular Gets Lost In Space
Image
The latest animation from Pixar has been in the pipe for quite some time, and while that’s not so strange for such a labor-intensive production, it’s telling that the finished version bears little resemblance, story-wise, to the film promised by the trailer released in 2023. But even without that knowledge, there’s definitely something off here; despite a cast-iron central premise — a desperately lonely young boy seeks a close encounter of the third kind — Elio never quite figures out what to do with it. It’s pretty obvious that the original intention was to celebrate the outsider and make a point about finding one’s tribe, but somewhere along the line that all got lost, and we’re left with spectacular film about the vastness of infinity that ends up an Earthbound parable about family ties.

When we first meet him, 11-year-old Elio Solis (Yonas Kibreab) is recently orphaned...

‘Dept. Q’ Cast Member Had a Secret Role in Harry Potter and No One Noticed
Image
There are plenty of murder mystery shows on Netflix, each following different storylines and complex twists to elicit some kind of shock factor. However, Dept. Q manages to approach this genre in a unique, Nordic noir manner. Based on novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the series delves into much more than just a crime that can’t be solved.

More character-driven than plot-driven, it focuses on the complex psyches of its detectives while the cold case unfolds alongside them. With how beloved the series has become, everyone seems to have opinions about where the characters should go from here in the next season. However, many may not know that the actress behind one of the most contentious characters in the show had a forgotten role in Harry Potter.

Frank moves the action to Scotland, with Goode starring as the English outsider alongside such Scottish favorites as Kelly Macdonald, Chloe Pirrie, Mark Bonnar, Shirley Henderson and Kate Dickie.

As Morck reels from an incident that almost killed him and paralyzed his colleague Di Hardy (Jamie Sives) he finds himself sidelined to a ‘lost cause’ basement cold case unit with his sidekicks Akram (Alexei Manvelov) and Rose (Leah Birne). Here, in a Zoom chat from his home in the U.K. with his wife and children making excellent background appearances,...

Despite Near-Perfect Audience Score, The Queen's Gambit's Creator's New Show Fails to Reach No. 1
Image
Crime shows have always been popular, and Netflix has found success with numerous titles in the genre. Its latest addition is just one of them.

The Scottish crime series Dept. Qpremiered on the streaming platform on May 29. The series starsWatchmen's Matthew Goode in the leading role as an emotionally scarred detective who gets assigned as the head of a cold case department. Following the show's release, Dept. Q received positive reviews, but it failed to debut at number one, per Tudum, and settled for third place.

For the week between May 26 and June 1, Dept. Q Season 1 debuted with 6 million views and 49.3 million hours viewed. The new series only had three full days to leave its mark on Netflix's global Top 10, and it had an encouraging opening.

Dept. Q debuted in the Top 10 in 72 countries, but didn't get a chance at the much-coveted number one spot in any territory in the first week.

Dept Q (TV Series 2025) ‘Netflix’ Recap & Ending Explained: Who Kidnapped Merrit Lingard?
Image
Based on writer Jussi Adler-Olsen’s book series by the same name, Netflix’s “Dept Q” is a taut thriller propelled by a layered mystery, timely humor, and an eclectically charming cast. Created by Scott Frank, the nine-episode British crime thriller grips your attention early and plays with it with some clever ruses. With Matthew Goode’s charismatically jaded Carl Morck (like Hugh Laurie’s House MD), Alexej Manvelov’s enigmatic Akram, and Leah Byrne’s sharply vibrant Rose, we have a team of investigators we will not mind tuning in to for the foreseeable future. A trifecta we have not seen since the cult-ish “Mindhunter.”

So, the only concern for the show is whether Netflix execs will find it in their heart to allow it to grow into a multi-season series. As soon as possible. Meanwhile, let us discuss the show’s ending and the various subplots’ conclusions.

Pixar’s next feature, “Elio,” is set to reach U.S. theaters on June 20, marking the studio’s first original release since “Turning Red.” The coming-of-age space tale is now steered by Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, who took the helm after Adrian Molina shifted to development on “Coco 2” last year.

The story follows 11-year-old Elio Solis, abducted to a sprawling “Communiverse” and mistakenly declared Earth’s ambassador, an arc the filmmakers use to examine childhood isolation and the need for connection. Shi said she “found her way in” once she grasped the boy’s longing to belong, while Sharafian noted that the team consulted psychologists specializing in children’s loneliness to ground the emotions.

Voice talent includes Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson. A new trailer released May 28 blends Pixar spectacle with a playful nod to a viral “gorilla fight” meme and has...

New Netflix Crime Thriller From The Queen's Gambit Creator Debuts With Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Netflix's new crime thriller from The Queen's Gambit creator debuts with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, revealing just how worth watching it is. Crime thrillers have been a staple of Netflix for quite some time, the platform putting out many that have grown popular in recent years. This includes 2024's mystery thriller Fool Me Once, which quickly became one of the Top 10 most-watched English language shows on the platform. More recently was the positively-reviewed drama Adolescence, whose popularity and important messages led to the series becoming a core part of UK education.

However, one recent crime thriller was co-created by Scott Frank, best known for the 2020 miniseries The Queen's Gambit. A far cry from crime drama, the series is a coming-of-age period piece starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, a competitive chess player. The Queen's Gambit ended up becoming a major release for Netflix, winning multiple Golden Globes and Emmys,...

Matthew Goode Talks Becoming Netflix’s New Leading Man in ‘Dept. Q’ — And Why He Won’t Be in ‘Downton Abbey 3’
Image
Matthew Goode is ready — and a little nervous — to unleash Dept. Q on the world.

“I’m on eggshells at the moment,” the English actor tells The Hollywood Reporter about his new Scotland-set police thriller premiering on Netflix Thursday, May 29. “I don’t know how people will react to it.”

Luckily, Goode, star of Downton Abbey, The Crown and The Imitation Game, to name a few, has Scott Frank at the helm. Screenwriter-turned-director Frank, best known to viewers as the creator of Anya Taylor-Joy’s wildly popular 2020 miniseries The Queen’s Gambit, is turning his attention to the adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olson’s Nordic crime noir novels.

“The Queen’s Gambit is special, and that’s him, that’s his mind, that’s his ability, that’s his direction, his authority,” Goode gushes about Dept. Q mastermind Frank. “And he’s only getting more authoritative and more brilliant. He’s like the second coming of Sidney Lumet.

Image
Plot: Dci Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police. The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove. So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best – rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer.

CinemaBlind’s Review – 95%

If you loved the hilarious dark comedy of Slow Horses and the thrilling mystery crime drama of Luther, then Netflix’s new British crime thriller drama series, Dept. Q is just for you, but I have one big problem, and that is that I fear Netflix will cancel it.

Final Trailer for Pixar's New Movie Features a Sneaky Inside Out Easter Egg
Image
Pixar has released a final trailer for its next animated movie, Elio. Eagle-eyed fans will notice that the first few seconds of the final trailer feature a sneaky Inside Out Easter egg.

The final Elio trailer begins with the title character's Aunt Olga (voiced by Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña) flipping through a parenting book called Parenting Your Spirited Child. She then shows Elio a page from the book featuring several different expressions, asking her nephew to pick the one that best represents how he is feeling. Inside Out fans will notice that several of the feelings are color-coded to match their corresponding emotions from the 2015 movie: Happy/Yellow for Joy, Sad/Blue for Sadness, Angry/Red for Anger. While the remaining main Inside Out emotions — Disgust, Fear, and Anxiety, the latter of whom debuted in Inside Out 2 — don't have exact one-for-one matches, Sick/Green, Stressed/Purple, and Overwhelmed/Orange are pretty close counterparts,...
