Rome reveals 'slimmer' line-up

Name and focus changes for every section, which are now all competitive, resulting in the festival’s structure being “slimmer’.

The ninth Rome Film Festival (Oct 16-25) has revealed a diverse line-up including the Italian premieres for potential awards contenders including David Fincher’s Gone Girl. the world premiere of Takashi Miike’s As the Gods Will and Burhan Qurbani’s We are Young, We are Strong and European premiere of Oren Moverman’s Time Out of Mind, Toronto hit Still Alice and Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet.

This year for the first time the award-winners in each section of the programme will be decided by the audience on the basis of votes cast after the screenings.

Each section has changed name and focus for 2014 and are all competitive, resulting in the festival’s structure being “slimmer’.

Italian comedies Soap Opera and Andiamo a Quel Paese bookend the line-up.

Cannes: Sundance Selects Acquires Competition Pic 'Poliss'

Cannes, France (May 21, 2011) – Sundance Selects announced today from the 2011 Cannes Film Festival that the company is acquiring all U.S. rights to writer-director and actress Maiwenn’s Poliss from Wild Bunch. The film, which made its world premiere in Competition at this week’s festival, was produced by Alain Attal and co-written by actress Emmanuelle Bercot, who also co-stars in the film. The film also stars Karin Viard, Joeystarr, Marina Fois, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Karole Rocher, Frederic Pierrot, Arnaud Henriet, Naidra Ayadi and Jérémie Elkhaim. The film follows a group of individuals and officers working in and around a child protection unit in Paris. Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects, said: "With Poliss, Maiwenn has given the Cannes Film Festival a jolt of electricity with an unforgettable ensemble cast. Cannes Movie Review: Polisse (2012)
Karin Viard, Joey Starr and Marina Fois in Polisse Polisse is a fast-paced, tragic, touching, emotional and occasionally hilarious look at the French police's Child Protective Unit (Cpu). It plays like a documentary, or a hard-hitting two hour premiere to a new cable police procedural, which we all now know is in no way an insult.

Co-writer and director Maiwenn Le Besco has crafted a story focused on the Cpu with a dedication to realism as it places the daily life of ten Cpu agents under the microscope. Trouble at home, trouble with co-workers and all their joys, disappointments and successes are on display. With each new scene comes a new emotion. Polisse is so tightly edited you're barely given a moment to breathe as it moves from one story to the next and by the time it's over you'll be surprised two hours has already gone by.
