Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming sequel to the Road House remake has hit some major turbulence. Filmmaker Guy Ritchie had been on board to direct, but shortly ahead of production, it's been revealed that this is no longer the case.

Per Deadline, Ritchie has exited the project, no longer set to direct Road House 2. The project was slated to start filming this fall, but even with Ritchie's departure, the plan is for the movie to move forward with its planned shooting schedule. A search is now underway for a new director amid continued casting. It's unclear why Ritchie exited the project at this time, as neither the director nor the studio have provided an official comment.

The word is that Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise his role from the previous film as Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who is a reimagined version of Patrick Swayze's character from the original Road House.

Rowdy Herrington's barroom brain-stomper "Road House" has had an interesting pop cultural journey. When it hit theaters 36 years ago, the improbable tale of Dalton (Patrick Swayze), a highly sought-after bouncer (with an NYU philosophy degree) who gets recruited to clean up a once-successful Missouri saloon that's become "the kind of place where they sweep up eyeballs after closing," received the kind of reviews you'd expect. Roger Ebert understood it (though lacked the courage to declare it the masterpiece I believe he knew in his heart it was), but his colleagues tore the film to shreds for being just about everything that makes it great: silly, boisterous and gratuitously violent. If they hadn't walked in expecting to have their intelligence insulted, they would've noticed that it was punchily written by Hilary Henkin and David Lee Henry and ferociously well directed.

After the Road House reboot found success on streaming, it was announced that the movie will be getting a sequel. Along with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role from the previous movie, the sequel will also bring back director Doug Liman.

In an interview with Collider, Liman shared what he could about Road House 2. The director insinuated that the sequel is still in its early works, so he can't say much beyond how "very excited" he is to continue the story. Liman also promised that Road House 2 will be a much "bigger" film than its predecessor, and while the story still seemingly has yet to be fleshed out, the director is nevertheless eager to get moving on the project.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.

In short, the Road House remake is trash.

In the filing obtained by Variety, Hill (who uses pen name David Lee Henry) claims Amazon ignored his ability to reclaim the rights for his 1986 screenplay as they mounted a remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, out March 21 on Prime Video.

Hill’s lawsuit alleges that he filed a petition with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2021, requesting that the copyright return to him after United Artists’ claim was set to expire in November 2023. The suit goes on to allege that Amazon ignored his claims and proceeded with the film, using artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of actors for Adr during the SAG strike in an effort to complete the film before the Nov. 10 deadline.

Ever since Universal-DreamWorks’ “1917” debuted, reporters have seemed fascinated with the fact that women played key creative roles in the film. The list included Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who co-wrote it with director Sam Mendes, and producers Pippa Harris and Jayne-Ann Tenggren.
