German box office flatlines in first half of 2025 but Steve Coogan starrer ‘The Penguin Lessons’ impresses
Image
The German box office flatlined for the first six months of this year.

Cinema takings increased by just 0.1% to €371.1m for the first half of 2025, compared to €370.8m for the same period in 2024, according to data collated by Comscore/Rentrak Deutschland.

The number of tickets sold to July 2 fell by 3.3% from 37.8 million to 36.6 million, although an increase in the average ticket price from €9.80 to €10.14 helped to make up for the downturn in admissions.

The figures show the German box office still remains well below its pre-pandemic highs. In the first six months of 2019, the box office stood at €430.7m from 49.1 million tickets sold.

Germany’s Cinematic Output Lights Up Industry’s Gloomy Atmosphere
Image
Germany’s film industry may have been hit hard by the economic slowdown, resulting in an overall gloomy outlook, but it’s still celebrating the biggest number ever of local films and co-productions at this year’s Berlinale and looking forward to a diverse lineup of 2025 releases, among them a number of high-profile sequels.

Compounding the sector’s overall predicament was the collapse of the federal government in November, forcing snap elections scheduled for Feb. 23. The political crisis left an ambitious reform of the country’s federal film funding system only partially implemented and a matter to be tackled by the next government.

The industry nevertheless welcomed the current government’s last-minute extension and increase of two key funding incentives in December that has ensured planning security for producers, studio operators and production service providers.

In the meantime, the local film community is cheering the strong showing of German titles at the Berlin Film Festival.

Constantin Boss Oliver Berben Seeks Partners for Brand Building as Premium Shows ‘Hagen’ and ‘Smilla’s Sense of Snow’ Head for Mipcom
Image
Oliver Berben, who took the reins of German production and distribution powerhouse Constantin Film on March 1, faces a German media landscape that is “changing radically and quickly,” he says. In response, he is adjusting the company’s approach to the business.

He welcomes the government’s proposed reform of the German Film Law, which will change the country’s production incentives, including for television, and will introduce an obligation on broadcasters and streamers to invest 20% of sales generated in Germany back into European productions, 70% of which would have to be in the German language.

“You have stagnating funding of public broadcasters. You have declining revenues for the private stations. The question is: Is the model functioning altogether? It is not, if we just keep on doing the same thing again and again.”

He adds, “Everything is changing, and these changes, by the way, are good. Us, as producers, we need...

Prime Video Confirms ‘Last One Laughing UK’ With Jimmy Carr Presenting — Edinburgh
Image
Prime Video has confirmed it is making a UK version of international format Last One Laughing.

Last year, we told you the Amazon streamer was exploring a British version of the show, which has versions on Prime Video in numerous territories, and it’s now going ahead following a tender process.

Comedian and presenter Jimmy Carr will host the show, which will run exclusive on Prime Video around the world in 2025.

In the series, a group of 10 British comedians will spend the day in a living room-style studio together trying to make the others laugh. At the first laugh, the competitor is cautioned (yellow carded), while a second eliminates the player from the game (red carded), and the only way to communicate with the outside is a telephone controlled by the host. The rules are simple: laugh and you’re out.

“It has the holy grail of format development: an incredible simple concept,...

German studio Constantin Film has greenlit The Canoe of Manitou, a sequel to Manitou’s Shoe, one of the most successful German-language movies ever. Michael ‘Bully’ Herbig returns to write, star and direct.

Having made his name in comedy sketch show Bullyparade, comedian and actor Herbig made Manitou’s Shoe in 2001. The comedy Western was a parody of the Winnetou Westerns of the 1960s. It was a huge hit, attracting almost 12 million moviegoers.

Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian are collaborating with Herbig on the screenplay and all three will reprise their roles from the first movie. Filming gets underway this year and the picture will hit theaters in 2025.

German broadcaster Rtl is on board and has snagged the TV rights.

“Bully is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding filmmakers in Germany and has mastered the art of making people laugh with his unmistakable humor,” said Oliver Berben, Constantin’s Deputy Chairman, and...

Michael Herbig at an event for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)
An Air Affair: Herbig Revisits Gdr Getaway in Strait-laced Thriller

German director Michael Herbig, best known for his comedic films in his native country, makes his first international splash with period thriller Balloon, a 2018 title at last landing stateside two years after its premiere. Based on the true story of two East German families who flee to the West via a hot air balloon, Herbig is reclaiming a national escapade previously filmed by Delbert Mann in 1982’s Night Crossing starring Beau Bridges and John Hurt. While Herbig doesn’t employ any surprising or lavish stylization to a rather straightforward rendering of the communist stranglehold on East Berlin, it’s an often taut and efficiently paced thriller intent on maximizing its potential, even if that means employing cliché to heighten suspense.…...

Distrib Films Acquires U.S. Rights to Studiocanal’s ‘The Perfect Nanny,’ ‘Someone Somewhere’ (Exclusive)
Distrib Films has acquired U.S. rights to Lucie Borleteau’s “The Perfect Nanny” and Cédric Klapisch’s “Someone Somewhere,” both of which will screen at the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York, a festival organised by the Film Society of the Lincoln Center and UniFrance.

A psychological thriller, “The Perfect Nanny” is adapted from Leila Slimani’s bestselling novel “Chanson Douce” which was awarded France’s highest literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, in 2016.

Represented in international markets by Studiocanal, “The Perfect Nanny” follows Myriam (Leïla Bekhti), a lawyer who decides to return to work after having children. She and her husband (Antoine Reinartz) think they’ve found the perfect nanny for their son and daughter. Bo Report: Sequel fatigue hits ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’
‘Terminator: Dark Fate.’

The latest iterations of Maleficent, Godzilla, Men in Black, The Angry Birds and Rambo flopped or under-performed in cinemas this year and Terminator: Dark Fate is the latest victim of moviegoers’ sequel fatigue.

It might be an exaggeration to say the sixth edition of the franchise self-destructed but the opening figures in Australia, the Us and 38 other markets last weekend weren’t pretty.

James Cameron’s name in the credits as one of the five “story by” writers and the novelty of seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton together on screen for the first time since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day counted for very little.

Speaking of sequels no one wanted or asked for, Roadshow’s 47 Meters Down: Uncaged sank without trace, mirroring its Us fate.

Meanwhile Transmission Films launched writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s Brittany Runs a Marathon on 20 screens three weeks before the dramedy starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Adèle Haenel in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Haugesund Prizes ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire,’ ‘Him,’ ‘Ballon’
Adèle Haenel in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Haugesund, Norway — Celine Sciamma’s intellectually dexterous, bittersweet love tale “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” has claimed another heart, taking home The Norwegian Film-Critics’ Prize at the Haugesund Film Festival’s closing night on Thursday.

The festival, which runs over August 17-23, capped its 47th edition with a screening of André Løyning and Kristian Landmark’s documentary

Sciamma’s revisionist romance won the screenplay prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May and will next head to Toronto, where it will screen as a Special Presentation.

“With elegance, sophistication and courage, the film explores how love and vitality can – at least momentarily – throw off the shackles of an oppressive social order. Exquisite acting performances and cinematography, combined with a soupcon of mythological symbolism, add up to a work of serious artistic merit,” noted the jury members in their verdict.

The Eurimages Lab Award went to director Guro Bruusgaard’s “Him.

Balloon review – airborne escape caper crash lands
Michael Herbig’s overwrought drama sucks the thrills out of this story of two families fleeing communist East Germany

You could probably choose a less conspicuous method of defecting than floating across the border in what looks like a giant glowing lightbulb. Yet a spectacular nocturnal breakout from communist East Germany by hot-air balloon is exactly what two families did in September 1979 – the basis of this glossy mainstream thriller released in Germany for last year’s reunification anniversary. Sadly, director Michael Bully Herbig – a well-known German comedy star – does them no favours with a frantic shooting style that somehow manages to render this terrifying endeavour both bombastic and trivial.

Friedrich Mücke and Karoline Schuch play the Strezlks, a disaffected electrician and his wife who, desiring an unfettered future for their two sons, decide to Montgolfier it out of the Gdr. When a northerly wind rears up, they break out the...

Tom Zickler Pays Tribute to Defa with ‘Traumfabrik’
“Traumfabrik” marks the return of one of Germany’s most successful producers back onto the film stage in more ways than one.

A period-piece love letter to East Germany’s famed Defa film studios, now known as Studio Babelsberg, “Traumfabrik” is a romantic drama set in 1961 that follows a young studio extra’s ambitious efforts to reunite with the French girl he loves after being separated by the construction of the Berlin Wall.

It’s also the name of a new Studio Babelsberg shingle headed by veteran producer Tom Zickler and Christoph Fisser, Studio Babelsberg vice president and COO.

Zickler launched the joint venture in 2017 after nearly 20 years of working with actor-director Til Schweiger on some of Germany’s most successful films of the past two decades. Overseeing production at Barefoot Films and Mr. Brown Entertainment, Zickler produced such hits as 1997’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”; 2010’s “Friendship!” and 2014’s “Head Full of Honey.

Homegrown Hits Have German Box Office Humming
German films have continued to perform strongly at the box office this year despite record high temperatures over the summer, usually a death knell for local cinemas, and not to mention World Cup soccer, which kept many potential moviegoers at home or in sports bars across the country.

Local pics have benefitted from a strong mix of comedy, children’s fare and drama. German productions accounted for some 11.3 million admissions in the first half of the year, compared with 10.6 million in the first six months of 2017, resulting in a 22.4% market share, up from 18.2%.

“German films have been able to increase both their revenue and market share in a difficult market environment, which is already a special achievement,” Peter Dinges, CEO of the German Federal Film Board (Ffa), tells Variety. “And with some high-profile movie launches in the second half of the year, I am extremely confident that this trend will...

German Audiences Look Away From ‘Never Look Away’
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Despite its selection as Germany’s entry for the Oscars and a glitzy premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “Never Look Away” is struggling to get viewers to look at it on home ground.

Henckel von Donnersmarck won an Oscar in 2007 for his freshman feature outing, the critically acclaimed East German drama “The Lives of Others.” He went on to make 2010’s “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. “Never Look Away,” his highly anticipated third film, follows a young painter through three turbulent eras of German history.

The film boasts a strong cast led by Tom Schilling (“Oh Boy”) and Sebastian Koch (“The Lives of Others”) and a reported budget of around $20 million – high for a German film and evident in its lavish production values. The three-hour movie has enjoyed positive and often glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, including from Variety,...

Of all the genres the hardest one by far to critique is comedy. With genres like drama, action, and suspense there is a stable of universality to them where we can recognize certain distinct qualities that make them great. When it comes to comedy the bottom line is typically—is it funny—which is where the subjectivity lays. What one person finds funny someone else may find mind-numbingly offensive. Just think there was an actual time and place when people thought Pauly Shore was a legit comedian. On the other hand there are certain uniform factors comedies need to be successful. Exclusive: Steve Buscemi Talks The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Steve Buscemi talks Anton Marvelton in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, in theaters this weekend

(From contributing writer Todd Gilchrist)

Steve Carell. Jim Carrey. Steve Buscemi. Which of these things don't (seem to) fit?

Steve Buscemi is, perhaps oddly, one of the most versatile and unique performers in Hollywood. He's played a guy who lamented being named Mr. Pink. A foul-mouthed, Jos&#233 Feliciano -loving kidnapper. A former high-school outcast who holds a grudge against his classmates as an adult. A dim-witted bowler with a weak heart. A lazy-eyed eccentric. A misanthropic blues fan. A chameleonic lizard. A political animal who wields control of Atlantic City. And in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, a childhood best friend who becomes co-star of the title character's Vegas magic act.

We sat down with Buscemi in Las Vegas to talk about The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. In addition to discussing his affinity for comedic material, Buscemi offered...

Funny Clip from The Incredible Burt Wonderstone
"I'll tell ya what... pretend I'm still here, and tell me all about it."

Here's a little clip from Warner Bros' upcoming magic comedy, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The movie tells the comedic tale of rival Las Vegas magicians who are competing for a highly competitive gig. The clip features a fun scene between Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carrey.

The movie was directed by Don Scardino (30 Rock) and scripted by Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Frances Daley (Horrible Bosses). It also stars Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Jay Mohr, and Michael Bully Herbig.

The comedy will magically appear in theaters on March 15th, 2013! I haven't heard the best things about this movie, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

Exclusive: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Writers Interview
John Francis Daley at an event for Pulse (2006)
Writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein take us inside the magical world of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, in theaters March 15

Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein both took very different paths to where they are today as one of Hollywood's hottest writing teams. John Francis Daley got his start in acting with the cult classic series Freaks and Geeks and films such as Waiting before landing a role as Dr. Lance Sweets on the hit Fox series Bones in 2007. Jonathan M. Goldstein started out writing for TV shows such as Big Wolf on Campus and The Geena Davis Show, which is where he met John Francis Daley for the first time. In 2011, their writing skills were put on the map with the hit summer comedy Horrible Bosses (they're also writing Horrible Bosses 2), and they return to the silver screen this weekend with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
