Liam Neeson's Worst-Rated Movie On IMDb Is A Sequel To A Netflix Action Hit
Image
Liam Neeson has three movies in IMDb's top 250, which is an accomplishment worth celebrating. Outside of starring in flicks that many movie buffs regard as some of the greatest of all time, however, his general output is pretty good. His "old man Neeson" era has produced a slew of action gems, and his performance in "The Naked Gun" remake was critically acclaimed, proving that the beloved comedy franchise can continue without Leslie Nielsen and the gang. Neeson is a reliable hand, and he has a strong track record for producing hits, but he's also starred in some turds — and said turds have produced even worse sequels.

In 2021, Neeson starred in Jonathan Hensleigh's "The Ice Road," a Netflix action-thriller about some truckers who set out to save a group of people after they get stuck in a diamond mine. Neeson's character, Mike McCann, is the punch-happy driver tasked with leading the dangerous rescue mission,...

Liam Neeson's Cold Storage Drops First Trailer
Image
Action icon Liam Neeson has teamed up with Stranger Things star Joe Keery and Barbarian breakout Georgina Campbell for his next major movie. All three star in the first trailer for Cold Storage.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the official teaser trailer for Cold Storage, which follows two young employees of a self-storage company built on the site of an old U.S. military base — Keery's Teacake and Campbell's Naomi — as they have their wildest night shift ever when a parasitic fungus escapes from the lowest sublevel of the base where it was sealed away by the government years before. As the temperature rises underground, this highly contagious and rapidly mutating microorganism multiplies and unleashes its brain-controlling, body-bursting terrors on the facility’s inhabitants – human and otherwise.

Neeson co-stars in Cold Storage as grizzled retired bioterror operative Robert Quinn, who helps Teacake and Naomi contain the merciless menace and prevent...

Liam Neeson's Sequel to His 4-Year-Old Action Thriller Becomes a PVOD Hit in Under a Week
Image
Liam Neeson's newest action movie is already a PVOD hit. Hitting digital on July 1 after a limited theatrical run, Ice Road: Vengeance is on its way to the top of the charts.

Per FlixPatrol, Ice Road: Vengeance is currently No. 14 on iTunes Top Movies in the United States, up one spot from yesterday and two spots from Wednesday. If Ice Road: Vengeance holds onto this momentum, there's a strong possibility that it will crack the Top 10 by next week. First announced in 2023 under its original title, The Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky, the long-awaited sequel brings back Jonathan Hensleigh as writer and director and Neeson as big rig driver Mike McCann, with the action shifting from Canada to Nepal.

In Ice Road: Vengeance, Mike McCann travels to Nepal to scatter his late brother’s ashes on Mt. Everest. Unfortunately, his trip takes a turn for the worse...

'Ice Road: Vengeance': Liam Neeson's New Action Thriller Gets Mowed Down by Critics
Image
Taken star Liam Neeson is back in the driver’s seat for the action thriller sequel Ice Road: Vengeance. But it sounds like the Hollywood icon should have left this particular franchise in park. The reviews for Ice Road: Vengeance have now emerged, with the action outing being met with a chilly reception from critics, despite Neeson’s continued success as everyone’s favorite aged action hero.

Starting with the hardest hitters, M.N. Miller of FandomWire gave Ice Road: Vengeance just 2/10 and wondered whether the lackluster effort was part of some sort of elaborate fraternity prank or blackmail.

Is Neeson part of an elaborate fraternity prank? Blackmail? A fan of career suicide that borders on professional masochism? Ice Road: Vengeance is a mind-numbing, atrocious, and utterly ridiculous piece of trash cinema—a true embarrassment of humiliation.

Next up, and just as harsh, is Robert Kojder of Flickering Myth, who...

Liam Neeson’s $50 Million Action Flop He Called a “Mythic Western” Is a Sleeper Hit on Streaming
Image
Liam Neeson will always be known for his roles in classic action movies like The Grey, The A-Team, and Taken. However, 10 years ago, he starred in an action vehicle that has become a surprising hit on a new free streaming service. Neeson stars alongside Ed Harris (Top Gun: Maverick) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again) in Run All Night, the crime thriller following Jimmy Colon (Neeson), a hitman who has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie. Run All Night is currently streaming for free on Tubi, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. The film earned “rotten” scores of 59% from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed only $71 million at the box office against a $50 million budget, falling well short of its break-even point.

During a 2014 interview with IndieLondon to discuss the movie Non-Stop,...

Ice Road: Vengeance (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Will Mike be able to Rescue Vijay?
Image
Liam Neeson has nothing to prove. But his stardom might be endangered, his legacy at stake, if he continues to sign up for recycled, dead-on-arrival stuff like the Ice Road films. The very fact that it has a sequel is bizarre. It’s the most blatantly dull entry in the already asinine action films that no one would remember even a few days after seeing it. The problem with these generic films is their lack of personality. There’s no sass, bite, or distinct voice that the characters have in the Ice Road films. Everyone is super-efficient with the stunts, but the depth is altogether missing.

Director Jonathan Hensleigh fills the films with so much inherent complacency that nothing sticks out memorably. Some stunts are adroit, slick, but none of the characters bear their own particular set of grievances and resentments that make them humanly compelling. They make expressions, wince,...

Liam Neeson Action Thriller 'Ice Road: Vengeance' Clip
Image
Liam Neeson is ready to get out on the road again in his latest action thriller: the ice road that is. Following up his 2021 chilly revenge action movie, Ice Road: Vengeance has brought Neeson’s Mike McCann back to cinemas with another round of high-jeopardy thrills, and MovieWeb has an exclusive clip from the film.

Four years on from his first outing as McCann, Neeson is back in the driving seat and taking on a whole new collection of bad guys in the sequel. As per the synopsis:

Ice Road: Vengeance — Is Liam Neeson Part of an Elobrate Fraternity Prank?
Image
I’ll just put it out there: Is Liam Neeson part of some elaborate fraternity prank? Blackmail? A fan of career suicide that borders on professional masochism? It’s as if his latest thriller—a sequel, no less—Ice Road: Vengeance—inspires a new kind of acronym: “Box Office Disasters Starring Neeson” (Bdsmn).

A sequel no one asked for to Netflix’s Covid-era release The Ice Road, Ice Road: Vengeance is a mind-numbing, atrocious, and utterly ridiculous piece of trash cinema—a true embarrassment of humiliation. Why on earth does Neeson keep signing on for scripts so far beneath his talent?

Ice Road: Vengeance Review – Liam Neeson’s Diminishing Returns Continue
Image
There exists a peculiar melancholy in watching Liam Neeson navigate his twilight years through the machinery of contemporary action cinema—a man whose every character seems haunted by ghosts that refuse proper burial. “Ice Road: Vengeance” finds the Irish actor once again inhabiting Mike McCann, though this sequel bears little resemblance to its 2021 predecessor beyond the specter of loss that shadows every frame. Jonathan Hensleigh returns as writer-director, transplanting his protagonist from the frozen expanses of Canada to Nepal’s vertical wilderness, where death lurks not in cracking ice but in the void between mountain peaks.

The premise unfolds with mythic simplicity: Mike journeys to scatter his brother Gurty’s ashes atop Everest, fulfilling a promise that binds the living to the dead. Yet fate—or perhaps the cruel mathematics of genre filmmaking—conspires to entangle him in earthly conflicts involving corrupt politicians, hired killers, and villagers whose ancestral lands...

‘Ice Road: Vengeance’ Review: Liam Neeson Heads to Nepal in a Bloated Sequel with Depressingly Few Icy Roads
Image
If there’s one thing that every audience member has a reasonable right to demand from a movie with “Ice Road” in the title, it’s ice roads. That’s probably why “The Ice Road” succeeded enough to merit a sequel in the first place. Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2021 film starred Liam Neeson in one of his off-the-rack late-career action performances as a grizzled trucker who agrees to drive across a frozen lake to rescue a group of miners from a collapsing mine. But Hensleigh’s new sequel, “Ice Road: Vengeance,” doesn’t live up to the branding quite as well.

Save for one brief mountainside drive, “Ice Road: Vengeance” doesn’t contain nearly enough ice roads to satisfy anyone who has been itching for more slippery chase scenes since 2021. The film does offer more than its fair share of vengeance, so there’s really no grounds to claim false advertising.

One Of Marvel's Lowest-Budget Movies Somehow Flopped At The Box Office
Image
It was December of 2008, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe was but a twinkle in Disney's eye. Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" had become a huge box office success earlier that year, and its post-credits stinger -- wherein Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) enticed Tony Stark to join the Avengers -- whetted the appetites of superhero fans everywhere. Disney would go on to purchase Marvel in 2009 and put that Avengers hint into action, ushering in a decade-long period of superhero ultra-dominance in theaters.

Before that happened, though, many superhero movies were still excitingly hit-and-miss, free of the McU's eventual homogeneity. The "X-Men" movies were up-and-down in quality, for instance, and Marvel characters like Daredevil and Elektra were only fitfully accepted by fans. Importantly, not all of these films had nine-figure budgets. Many studios, while recognizing that superheroes were moneymakers, weren't always willing to invest piles of cash in them. That wouldn't...

Val Kilmer's Iconic Filmography Dominates the Streaming Charts Days After His Tragic Passing

The world lost a legend in Val Kilmer earlier this week, and fans are already celebrating his life by tuning in to some of his most iconic movies. Three of Kilmer’s films, Top Gun, The Saint, and Top Gun: Maverick, have all moved into the top three spots in the Paramount+ top 10. Kilmer’s role as Iceman in both Top Gun movies will forever live on as one of the most famous in his filmography, and The Saint sees him step into the role of Simon Templar, a thief who has been hired to steal the secret process for cold fusion. The Saint and Top Gun were panned by critics upon release, but both have become cult classics over the years with large followings.

Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck in Armageddon (1998)
Michael Bay | “No one can greenlight anything,” the director says; also, he’s made a documentary about parkour
Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck in Armageddon (1998)
Armageddon director Michael Bay has reflected on how difficult it is to get original films made in Hollywood as he promotes his documentary about parkour, We Are Storror.

If even a major Hollywood director like Michael Bay struggles to find support for an original film idea, then the rest of the industry must be seriously struggling. Yet according to the action filmmaker himself, “No one can greenlight anything anymore,” with the modern mainstream filmmaking landscape being “very different” from the 1990s, when he broke through with such films as Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon.

Bay made the observation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he talked about his new documentary, We Are Storror (more about that shortly). When asked about his filmmaking outside major franchises like Transformers, Bay suggested that he’d struggle to get his 1998 disaster action thriller Armageddon through the Hollywood studio today.

'It's a Very Different Business': Michael Bay Details Call With James Cameron to Lament Hollywood's Evolution

Michael Bay recently shared a story about commiserating the current state of Hollywood with fellow filmmaker James Cameron. The two were discussing the challenges of getting original ideas greenlit by studios.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Bay shared his discussion with the Titanic director where the two talked about how much Hollywood has changed since the early days of their careers. "I just had a conference call with Jim Cameron, and we were both commiserating about Hollywood. No one can greenlight anything anymore. It’s just so slow. It’s a very different business," Bay said.

He went on to reminisce about how the process today differs from the time when he was making Armageddon, the 1998 disaster film starring Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton and Liv Tyler. "During Armageddon, those were the days. We had Jonathan Hensleigh, the writer. We sat down for two or three weeks. We...

Michael Bay Says It's Getting Harder to Get a Film Made in Hollywood
Image
There was a time not long ago that just the names Michael Bay or James Cameron attached to a new film project would get an automatic greenlight, but it appears those days are over. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding his new parkour documentary, We Are Storror, the famous director said it's getting more difficult to get a film made, even for him and Cameron.

"I just had a conference call with Jim Cameron, and we were both commiserating about Hollywood. No one can greenlight anything anymore. It's just so slow."

There are several factors involved in why Hollywood is not only cutting back on the number of films it greenlights, but also the budgets which have escalated over the years. Perhaps the biggest was the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw Los Angeles shut down production in 2020. But as the industry was getting back up on its feet,...

Michael Bay Credits Ben Affleck's Stomach Flu for 'Armageddon's Best Scene

Michael Bay has directed a lot of action flicks in his day, and next to the first Transformers movie, perhaps none are more loved than the 1998 disaster film Armageddon. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Bay was asked about the scene in question, which features Affleck saying goodbye to Willis's character of Harry Stamper after the latter decides to sacrifice himself to save the world. It's a touching moment amidst the destruction happening all around them, and you wouldn't know it, but Bay said Affleck had...

Thomas Jane in 'The Punisher' Is a Free to Stream Hit on Tubi.

Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting Jon Bernthal’s MCU debut as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, but in the meantime, the cult classic 2004 adaptation of The Punisher has fought into Tubi’s Top 10 most-watched list. Despite being roundly panned by critics, there is still a large following for the movie out there, as has been proven by its reappearance on streaming.

The Punisher’s new success on free streaming is certainly a good sign for the MCU’s reintroduction of Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again later this year. While the actors changed, and Bernthal gained a lot of praise in the role, there could be a chance that talk of his upcoming return has...

Mark Collie Details Marvel's R-Rated 'Punisher' Villain 20 Years Later

Recent gems like Deadpool and Logan have proven that superhero films can still achieve massive success with a hard R-rating. One of the first Marvel superheroes that dabbled in the adults-only MPAA rating was the dark and vengeful Punisher, who was brought to life in 1989 by Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) and then in 2004 by Thomas Jane (HBO's Hung). The latter film is now celebrating its 20th anniversary, of course, and MovieWeb recently caught up with one of Jane's co-stars about their throwback revenge flick. Veteran actor Mark Collie, who plays villain Harry Heck in The Punisher, spoke with us amid the release of his new series Landman and also dished about Heck's potential future in the MCU as well as the more recent Punisher iterations.

Jumanji Director Explains Why Kirsten Dunst Did Not Appear In The Sequels
Image
Although Kirsten Dunst starred as one of the main characters in 1995's Jumanji, she did not appear in any of the sequels. However, director Jake Kasdan says the actor was left out because of how the original film ended.

"We love Kirsten. She's fantastic" Kasdan told The Hollywood Reporter. "From the time we did Welcome to the Jungle we were very focused on keeping a little bit of connectivity to the original movie, which we love. We've always wanted to honor it and keep enough of it alive. Also, the way the original movie ends, as brilliant as it is, creates a lot of plot complications in trying to continue the story with those characters."

Mrs. Doubtfire & Jumanji Streaming Now on Tubi

Fans of Robin Williams will be able to sit down and enjoy two of his much-loved movies from the 1990s thanks to Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji joining the Tubi library. The comedy movies are among the most beloved of Williams career, and now another generation can discover his genius for themselves without having to spend a dime.

In 1993, Williams gave one of his greatest comedy performances in Mrs. Doubtfire, playing divorcee Daniel, who disguises himself as a nanny in order to be able to see his children. While there are those who will say the movie is dated, it is hard to see the film as anything other than a hilarious, and often poignant, story about the lengths a parent will go to in order to be close to their children. In contrast, 1995s Jumanji is a rollicking adventure comedy in which Williams plays Alan Parrish, a man who has...

Why Armageddon Is So Inaccurate, According to NASA
Image
In the late 90s, Bruce Willis and Michael Bay were both at the peak of their powers. So was producer Jerry Bruckheimer. When it was announced that these three would be teaming up to make a space mission movie, audiences were excited. Aided by various screenwriters, including Jonathan Hensleigh (best known for Die Hard), and an ensemble cast that consisted of Steve Buscemi, Keith David, Owen Wilson, and Ben Affleck, it seemed like nothing would go wrong.

Armageddon ActionAdventure Sci-FiThriller Release Date July 1, 1998Director Michael BayCast Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Will Patton, Steve BuscemiRuntime 151

Unfortunately, critics felt that Armageddon was the kind of film that demands a total short-circuit of ones entire mental functions. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a low 43% score, while on Metacritic, it has a 42% score. Roger Ebert even included it in his list of most hated films.

Despite that, the Academy loved it,...

“I wished I would have taken”: Turning Down Nicolas Cage’s Role in this Action Movie is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Biggest Regret in Hollywood

Arnold Schwarzenegger still regrets losing a blockbuster film to Nicolas Cage in 1996. Cage starred alongside Sean Connery in the action thriller film, The Rock. The producers of the film, Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, initially approached Schwarzenegger for the role of FBI chemical weapons specialist Stanley Godspeed. However, they came with a half-baked script to meet with the Predator star, who asked them to come back when they were completely done with the script.

The Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger lost one role to Nicolas Cage that he regrets even today

The film received critical acclaim and was even nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Sound. Schwarzenegger admitted that he missed out on a great opportunity but still believed that a completed script is crucial to commit to a role.

Currently in production, the film sees Neeson returns as ‘big-rig’ ice road driver Mike McCann who, honoring his late brother’s last wish, travels to Nepal to scatter his ashes on Mt. Everest. While on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, McCann and his mountain guide encounter a group of Nepalese mercenaries and must fight not only to save themselves and the busload of innocent travelers, but also the local villagers’ homeland.

The Ice Road 2 | Liam Neeson thriller sequel starts filming in Australia this month
Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson will return for the icy vehicular thriller sequel, The Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky, and filming is set to begin in Australia shortly.

Released in 2021, The Ice Road wasn’t necessarily the best entry in Liam Neeson’s action-thriller phase, but it did feature Laurence Fishburne as a character named Jim Goldenrod, which is one of those things we remember in idle moments from time to time.

About a group of truckers who set off down a frozen highway in the hope of rescuing workers from a collapsed diamond mine, The Ice Road received middling reviews, but was evidently a success for the companies that streamed it – the film was hosted by Netflix in the US and Amazon Prime in the UK.

It was so successful, in fact, that the sequel was hungrily snapped up at 2023’s Cannes Film Festival by Amazon Prime – that purchase was said to be worth $17m,...

Liam Neeson, Jonathan Hensleigh Take ‘The Ice Road 2’ Shoot to Australia
Image
Liam Neeson is to reprise his role as a truck driver turned rescue worker from 2021 indie hit “The Ice Road.”

With director Jonathan Hensleigh again on board, “The Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky” relocates its story from Canada in the original to Nepal in the sequel. Film production is set to shift from North America to Australia’s Victoria State.

Filming will begin this month using Gippsland town of Walhalla as the backdrop for some of the picture’s action scenes. It will also shoot in and around Melbourne and make use of virtual production, volume screens and technology at NantStudios @ Docklands Studios Melbourne.

“The Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky” is a Code Entertainment, ShivHans Pictures, Ema production. Its producers are Code’s Al Corley, Bart Rosenblatt and Eugene Musso, along with Shivani Rawat of ShivHans and Hensleigh, as well as Lee Nelson and David Tish...

Was The Hulk's Cancelled '90s Film a Lost Classic?
Image
The 1997 attempt to bring the Incredible Hulk to the big screen had a projected release date of 1999, with Johnny Depp starring as Bruce Banner, but Billy Crudup briefly became attached to the role before the project was scrapped. The film aimed to use a combination of animatronics and CGI, similar to Jumanji and Jurassic Park, to create the Hulk and his adversaries. The script reimagined the Hulk as a speaking alter-ego of Bruce Banner, and featured action-packed set pieces and visually exciting scenes, making it an unapologetic loud, dumb action movie.

Welcome to the 30th installment of Page One Rewrite, where I examine genre screenplays that just couldn't make it. This week, a late '90s attempt by the creators behind Jumanji to bring the Incredible Hulk to the big screen…although their inspiration leaned more towards David Cronenberg's The Fly than anything Lee/Kirby. And if you have any suggestions for the future,...

Jon Bernthal.
Punisher: War Zone Revisited
Jon Bernthal.
When people think of Frank Castle on the silver screen, actors like Jon Bernthal and Dolph Lundgren come to mind. However, the late Ray Stevenson‘s portrayal in Lexi Alexander’s 2008 crime-drama Punisher: War Zone hides in the shadows of the character’s cinematic history. The film was planned as a sequel to 2004’s The Punisher, starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta. War Zone picks up five years into the anti-hero’s journey into darkness, with Frank encountering his most significant threat in the villain Jigsaw, played by Dominic West.

Jonathan Hensleigh, who directed The Punisher, was supposed to return with Jane reprising the title role. However, setbacks kept the film from progressing, with Hensleigh and Jane hard-quitting the project out of frustration. Jane expressed his exasperation by saying, “What I won’t do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie I don’t believe in. I...

Remembering One of Ray Stevenson’s Most Overlooked Roles
Image
Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.

But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

Ice Road 2 starring Liam Neeson set for Amazon after the biggest Cannes market deal
Image
Liam Neeson isn’t done with the action game just yet. The star who found a second career in his twilight years as a man with particular sets of skills is getting the most out of his time while his body allows him. Neeson recently starred in the Netflix action film, The Ice Road, from the writer of Die Hard with a Vengeance and writer/director of Thomas Jane’s 2004 Marvel adaptation, The Punisher, Jonathan Hensleigh. The Ice Road saw Neeson and Laurence Fishburne trekking across a frozen highway in semi-trucks as the ice perpetually cracks below them. There are now reports that a sequel is on the way and heading to Amazon thanks to a huge deal made at this year’s Cannes market. Liam Neeson Action Sequel ‘Ice Road 2’ Heading To Amazon For Around $17M In Biggest Deal Thrashed Out At This Year’s Cannes Market So Far
Image
Exclusive: The biggest deal thrashed out so far at this year’s Cannes market is nearing completion with Amazon Prime Video set to pre-buy international rights — excluding Germany — to Liam Neeson action sequel Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky in a pact pegged around $17M.

Deal isn’t done but is heading that way, we understand from market sources. Germany has sold in a separate multi-million dollar pact to a different buyer.

The project will see the evergreen Neeson headed back to treacherous and frozen terrain, this time swapping out The Ice Road‘s harsh climbs of Northern Canada for the similarly inhospitable mountains of Nepal.

The Solution Entertainment Group is handling international sales. CAA Media Finance is repping U.S. rights. The Solution, CAA and Amazon all declined to comment.

In the sequel Neeson returns as ‘big-rig’ ice road driver Mike McCann who, honoring his late brother’s last wish,...

The Punisher's Thomas Jane Dished Out Real-World Punishment To Co-Star Kevin Nash... By Stabbing Him With An Actual Knife
Image
To date, there have been four notable live-action filmed renditions of the Marvel Comics character, the Punisher. The character, also known as Frank Castle, saw his family murdered by an overzealous and vengeful gangster, and soon thereafter became the world's most deadly vigilante. Imagine Batman with bloodthirst and guns, and you'll have a good idea of what the Punisher is all about.

It's worth mentioning right away that in recent years, the Punisher's skull logo has become a source of controversy. In about 2012, the skull began to be co-opted as a positive symbol of fascist violence. It was seen on the police cars during Black Lives Matter protests and adopted as a symbol of a "Blue Lives Matter" countermovement, used to support police brutality. Eventually, Marvel Comics had the Punisher confront some of his cop disciples, saying out loud that he is not a role model and that cops should hold themselves to higher standards.

Why Thomas Jane Was Recast As The Punisher After The 2004 Movie
Image
Thomas Jane portrayed Frank Castle in Jonathan Hensleigh's The Punisher, but he would subsequently be succeeded not once but twice. The Punisher has had a curious history his live-action adaptations compared to most other Marvel characters, first being played by Dolph Lundgren in 1989's The Punisher. Jane would later assume role in 2004's The Punisher, which was a moderate success and set up Castle's continued vigilante tale in The Punisher 2.

However, behind-the-scenes issues ultimately led both Hensleigh and Jane to depart The Punisher franchise, with Frank Castle being rebooted in 2008's Punisher: War Zone. Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle was generally well-received, which made his departure quite unfortunate, though he would later be seen in the role again in the 2015 short film Punisher: Dirty Laundry. Here is why Thomas Jane ultimately departed from The Punisher movie franchise.
