1 of the Best Dinosaur Movies of All Time Secretly Destroyed Jim Henson's Prehistoric Passion Project
Image
Quick LinksWhat Was Jim Henson's The Natural History Project? Why Did The Natural History Project Go Extinct?Did The Natural History Project Evolve Into a Beloved '90s Sitcom?

One of the best dinosaur movies of all time secretly destroyed Jim Henson's prehistoric passion project before it ever had the chance to be realized. Whether it's Jurassic Park, Godzilla, or The Land Before Time, dinosaur movies have always been some of the most ambitious undertakings in cinema. As a man who chased his dreams, pushed boundaries, and challenged his audiences, Jim Henson's career is filled with projects that once sought to elevate storytelling to new heights, and when dealing with creatures as massive and bizarre as the Tyrannosaurus rex, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus, one must aim high just to bring them to life. The Natural History Project would have tested Henson like never before, and had it not been for unexpected circumstances,...

Robert Eggers set to direct a sequel to a Jim Henson classic
Image
It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")

Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.

Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

Nosferatu Director Robert Eggers Confirmed To Helm Labyrinth Sequel
Image
Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.

Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures. Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we had heard that another filmmaker was being sought for the project - we just didn't expect it to be Eggers!

According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.

We also have confirmation that the movie will be a direct sequel, not a reboot. Whether this means we'll see Jennifer Connolly back as Sarah and a new...

The story follows sixteen year old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a treacherous maze in order to save her baby brother from The Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey, Sarah encounters...

Robert Eggers becomes the Babe with the Power as his plans to write and direct a Labyrinth sequel are confirmed
Image
Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!

Plot details for Eggers’s Labyrinth sequel remain more mysterious than Jareth’s magnificent package, though sources say the film is a sequel, not a remake, to Henson’s timeless, puppet-populated masterpiece. Eggers will write the script with Sjón, his writing partner for 2022’s The Northman. The duo is...

Image
“Nosferatu” director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s the 1986 cult fantasy movie “Labyrinth” for TriStar Pictures, Variety has confirmed.

Eggers is writing the project with his writing partner Sjón, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.

Robert Eggers Set For ‘Labyrinth’ Sequel At TriStar
Image
It’s been a big week for Robert Eggers.

Rumor: Robert Eggers to direct a film set in the world of Labyrinth?
Image
2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Such a project has been making its way through development hell for several years, and now Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has revealed that he has heard that The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has closed a deal to co-write and direct the new Labyrinth film!

This project first started moving forward in 2016, when Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel writer Nicole Perlman signed on to write the screenplay. Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) was hired to direct the film in 2017, and he wrote his own draft of the script with Jay Basu. The script was complete by October 2018… but the project didn’t go into production,...

The Fake Tom Hiddleston Labyrinth Poster Explained
Image
The rumors about a Labyrinth 2024 remake starring Tom Hiddleston as Jareth, the Goblin King, originated from a poster that went viral on social media - however, the poster isn't official. The original Labyrinth was released in 1986, starring Jennifer Connelly and the late, great, David Bowie as The Goblin King. Jim Henson, of Muppets fame, was also a big part of the production, creating puppets for all the various fantasy creatures that 16-year-old Sarah encounters on an adventure through a fantasy realm.

Although the musical fantasy flick was not a huge box office success on release, it has since become a cult classic - and, unsurprisingly, this has led to many discussions of a modern remake. While the original casting and creatures are incredible, there's no doubt that technology and visual effects have come a long way, and some elements of the movie now appear dated. However, no remake has been confirmed,...

Labyrinth 2: Confirmation & Everything We Know
Image
Quick Links Labyrinth 2 Latest News Labyrinth 2 Is Confirmed Who Is Making Labyrinth 2? Labyrinth 2 Story Labyrinth 2: Further News & Info Brian Henson confirms Labyrinth 2 is still in development, but progress has been minimal. The sequel has had various directors and script updates over the past decade. Uncertainty surrounds the plot of Labyrinth 2, especially the recasting of David Bowie's Jareth.

Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth was one of the great cult classics of the decade, and now the fantasy story is returning in Labyrinth 2. The original film follows a young girl named Sarah who must enter the titular labyrinth to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King Jareth. Perhaps best remembered for its catchy tunes provided by David Bowie, Labyrinth also blended Jim Henson's amazing puppet prowess with the full imagination of the aforementioned filmmaker.

JoBlo Visits Henson Studios and Talks Labyrinth & Dark Crystal With Brian Henson and more!
Image
It’s beautiful how movies can take us back to an innocent time. A perfect example is the absolute adoration of Jim Henson’s classic features, The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). For many, growing up on The Muppets and Sesame Street brought a level of excitement for both of these features. Even still, while Crystal made a decent showing at the box office, audiences weren’t ready for Labyrinth upon its release. Now, however, both films have found themselves well-loved and admired. So much so that both are getting the 4K treatment, and you can stream them immediately.

We at JoBlo had a childhood dream come to life. We joined other journalists and influencers to celebrate the release. And the after noon gave us the open invitation for a Henson Studio Tour. Included in the event was a contact juggler named Rewi HoopHooligan. Used in Labyrinth, Rewi put on quite...

Labyrinth 2 Gets Clarifying Update After Cult Classic Sequel Was Seemingly Shelved
Image
Brain Henson clarifies that Labyrinth 2 is still a project they are excited about, but he suggests speaking with his sister Lisa Henson for more information. Scott Derrickson, who was attached as the director, previously stated that the script couldn't meet the studio's expectations. The biggest challenge for a Labyrinth sequel is finding a suitable replacement for the late David Bowie as the iconic Goblin King Jareth.

Brain Henson, son of the legendary Jim Henson, has offered a clarification about plans for Labyrinth 2 after reports that the project was seemingly set aside. Based on the 1986 classic that starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, long-gestating plans for a sequel began as early as 2016 when Marvel’s Nicole Perlman was tapped to pen a script alongside Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez and Jay Basu. In 2020, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson replaced Álvarez, though as recently as October last year, he cast...

Five Nights At Freddy's Landing Jim Henson's Creature Shop Is A Big Deal – Here's Why
Image
There were always two sides to the Jim Henson Company during Henson's lifetime. On one of them, you have the puppets they created for "Sesame Street" and "Fraggle Rock," shows that are as wholesome and earnest as their googly-eyed stars. On the other one, you have the often frightening and twisted puppets that Henson and his crew invented for "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth," as well as those for even creepier fantasy movies like director Nicolas Roeg's "The Witches." The Muppets, in case you were wondering, straddled the line between the two sides.

More than 30 years after its founder's death, however, Henson's legendary Creature Shop is now working on the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie. As anyone even remotely familiar with the premise for the original "Fnaf" video games could tell you, Blumhouse's film adaptation is a far cry from even the darkest projects Henson's company developed under his watch.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Director Is Still Hopeful for Another Season
Image
Almost three years ago, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was cancelled on Netflix after a single season. While fans have been waiting to hear any news of a possible continuation, the possibility seems to have thinned over the past few years. But a key player in the show’s production is still holding onto hope, that player being Louis Leterrier. When io9 asked the director, hypothetically, what would have been in store had the series been able to continue, he responded with the following.

“I won’t tell you, because I still have hope that it can come back. I mean, who would have thought that 37 years later that [we would’ve been able to bring Dark Crystal back]? So, I have high hopes. You know, it might not be me. It might be my grandson or, you know, Jim Henson’s great-grandson, but somebody will direct the rest of this show because we need to tell that story.
