I gotta be honest, I don’t give a shit about baseball. I never watch games on television, and I hated playing Little League as a kid. I’ve attended ball games in both the minor leagues and the majors, and, try as I might to stay engaged, I’m usually much more preoccupied with keeping my cup of overpriced beer full than I am with whoever is up to bat.
So I can say without bias that baseball-themed episodes of sitcoms are the absolute best. A sense of competition inherently makes for a good storyline, and the characters are usually out of their element, allowing you to see another side of them. There’s also a feeling of fun, whimsy and nostalgia that’s somehow inherent to the TV version of baseball.

When a professional athlete is the special guest star of a sitcom, it’s almost always a strikeout/fumble/missed shot. Some sports fans might be so charmed by a player’s athletic prowess that they can overlook it, but a swole dude awkwardly waiting for his cue and then reciting a line with a delivery more wooden than a baseball bat is usually unwatchable.
You can find examples of this in almost every long-running sitcom, but these are five of the most egregious…
5 Bill Buckner on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
The most infamous moment of first baseman Bill Buckner’s baseball career was when a ground ball went through his legs during a pivotal moment of the 1986 World Series. That moment became the central joke in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm Buckner guest-starred in: He misses a couple of things Larry tosses to him, but at the end, he...

Seinfeld is obviously a very food-heavy show. In addition to the constant meals that Jerry and the gang shared at Monk’s Diner, there was Elaine’s “big salad,” an authoritarian soup chef, an elaborate scheme involving a marble rye and a genius muffin top-only business plan so promising that it was literally stolen by McDonald’s.
Not to mention, some of us first learned about the existence of babka from the episode “The Dinner Party.” Although, traditionally, the “crowned jewel of Jewish pastries” isn’t served with a hair on top.
So it makes sense that someone would create a real-life eatery inspired by the show. And apparently someone did, but it’s nearly 3,000 miles away from New York City.
As one fan on Reddit recently pointed out, Little Jerry’s is a Seinfeld-themed diner located in Tacoma, Washington. Pretty much every item on the menu is named after a Seinfeld reference,...

Throughout its brilliant nine-season run, "Seinfeld" brought a number of celebrities on to play amusing caricatures of themselves. Raquel Welch (star of "Scarsdale Surprise"), Marisa Tomei and "The Velvet Fog" Mel Tormé are just a few big names that got in on the fun, but it's arguable the most memorable drop-ins came from the world of sports. Given that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are both massive sports fans, this shouldn't be surprising, but it is interesting that both men managed to get players from their favorite, and very different, New York baseball teams to guest on the show.
David, a well-known Yankees fanatic, prevailed upon newly minted World Series champions Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams to appear on the Season 8 episode "The Abstinence" in 1996. Though not anywhere near a top-tier episode, Jeter and Williams were game and comfortable within the comedy genre – which is not always the case for...

Over its nine-season run, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David enjoyed corralling celebrities to play themselves on the groundbreaking NBC sitcom "Seinfeld." Who can forget New York Mets great Keith Hernandez getting accused of spitting on Kramer and Newman while also finding the time to romance Elaine ("I'm Keith Hernandez")? Or the time George asked Marisa Tomei out on a date before his deceased fiancée Susan had even been buried? And then there's Jon Voight, who once took a bite out of Kramer's arm in a taxi.
"Seinfeld" was delightfully random in its choice of celebrity cameos, but every single one felt like they belonged in the show's off-kilter universe. Raquel Welch, Mel Tormé, and Bryant Gumbel were, for whatever reason, destined to find their way onto the show about nothing. Some cameos were certainly more obvious than others. Considering how...

Jason Alexander was bummed out on a recent episode of his Really No Really podcast. He’d recently discovered that Armin Shimerman, an actor who had guest-starred on the Seinfeld episode “The Caddy,” had a terrible experience with the cast. “I hated them. Hated them,” Shimerman reportedly said during a Q&a at a fan convention. “They were non-communicative, ugly, non-responsive. What’s the word? Insular.”
Maybe Alexander could have chalked it up as a “somebody having a bad day” complaint if not for hearing a similar comment from another guest who just happened to be a former New York Met and National League Mvp. “Keith Hernandez said I in particular was — I think the word was standoffish,” said Alexander.
Was the Seinfeld cast really that rude to guests? For confirmation, Alexander turned to his podcast guest Wayne Knight, the comic actor who frequently played Newman on the sitcom. “I...

A fun part of a long-running sitcom about people dating in their 20s is that the show has the perfect opportunity for regular stunt casting. "How I Met Your Mother" could casually throw Britney Spears into an episode or two without messing with the format, just like "Seinfeld" can have Keith Hernandez stop by to date Elaine for an episode. Of course, not every celebrity guest star is as big as Spears was, but even a minor star could still help get some extra viewers tuning in.
A case in point was the "Friends" season 3 episode "The One with Frank Jr.," in which Isabella Rossellini stops by the gang's coffee shop, playing herself. The central joke here is that Ross (David Schwimmer) had originally put Rossellini on his list of celebrity women he's allowed to sleep with without his girlfriend Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) getting upset about it. As soon as Brian Thompson bit the dust, dozens of Seinfeld superfans started penning their “modern Seinfeld” episodes about the now-viral killing. Then, when police captured 26-year-old Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, terminally online and anti-insurance-company Seinfeld fans furiously rewrote their fanfics to include the development that the alleged shooter has a hilariously Italian name, he’s objectively an Adonis and he has a long history of peculiar literary criticism.
The internet’s macabre fascination with the murder of a health insurance don in Manhattan and the Seinfeldian circumstances of the shooting has led to the creation of unique, poor-taste and outrageously funny pitches for a modern Seinfeld episode about the extrajudicial end of a profiteer of human suffering.

Larry David, one of the masterminds behind Seinfeld — and one of the best comedians on modern television — is not usually seen outside reruns of NBC's iconic comedy behemoth or his own show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. However, he recently decided to play one of his best characters from the show about nothing that ran from 1989 to 1998 one last time.
Although "play" might be an overstatement, as David only provides voice work for the character in this new ad for the trading card and collectible company, Topps. David used to provide the voice for George Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees owner, while George Constanza (Jason Alexander) worked for the baseball team. In the new video published by Topps on their YouTube channel, baseball player John Elway recalls how he was drafted by the Yankees in 1981. Then, the video jumps to a team pitching Tony Gwynn to Seinfeld’s iteration of Steinbrenner.

Seinfeld co-creator Larry David reprises his most iconic role from the hit sitcom in a new video. Throughout the show's 1989-1998 run on NBC, David made several cameos as different characters, a fitting way to honor him as the co-creator and showrunner of the series. However, his most well-known character was former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who was George Costanza's boss for several seasons.
In a new video from Topps, former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway reminisces about being drafted by the Yankees in 1981. Elway credits Steinbrenner for his draft. The video then shows the Seinfeld version of Steinbrenner in his office, which looks just like the one he had in the sitcom, along with his other employees. The camera also only shows the back of Steinbrenner, just like it did in the series. Even though the employees are trying to convince him to choose Tony Gwynn for the draft,...

Larry David is reprising his best known acting role on Seinfeld, once again portraying the late former owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner.
David is playing Steinbrenner in a new commercial for Michael Rubin’s Fanatics, which is releasing a new baseball card set, Topps’ Bowman Draft 2024. The set includes a card that never was: a 1981 Bowman card featuring NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who was drafted by the Yankees that year. He ended up choosing football over baseball (probably for the best, for him at least).
The spot, called “It’s Gotta Be Elway!”, sees David demanding that his executives draft Elway over baseball legend Tony Gwynn: “The basketball player?! I don’t think so … It’s gotta be Elway! I want him out in right field with that cannon of an arm!” David says as Steinbrenner.

According to some Seinfeld conspiracy theorists, Swiss watch brand Rolex Sa may have spent $4 million on the most ambitious and unholy product placement campaign of all time, wielding the most cutting-edge computer graphics technology of 1996.
Here in the real world, sitcom legend and anti-woke warrior Jerry Seinfeld is almost as big an enthusiast of luxury watches as he is of luxury cars. He’s gushed about his precious collection to GQ in the past, and the vintage timepieces he sports on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and in interviews have been the subject of deep-dives and fan catalogs among the celebrity-watch-watcher community.
As a 70-year-old New Yorker with more money and more time than he knows what to do with, Seinfeld is, theoretically, the perfect poster boy for Rolex collectors — and, if the fan theories are true, Rolex has been planning for such an eventuality for almost 30 years.

Major League Baseball umpires aren’t typically known for having great senses of humor. In fairness, being an ump requires intense concentration, even as tens of thousands of people are audibly cursing your lack of prescription eyewear. But this week, one umpire showed off their love for a beloved comedy during a game.
In a recent match-up between the Los Angeles Angels and the Atlanta How the Hell Are They Still Named the Braves, a dramatic call confirming that Atlanta’s Whit Merrifield narrowly hit a solo home run in the fifth inning was completely upended by the reveal that second base umpire James Hoye was wearing a Kramer shirt underneath his jacket — presumably because his “Balki from Perfect Strangers” shirt was in the wash.

One of the most memorable episodes from Seinfeld’s early years found Jerry befriending his idol, New York Mets star Keith Hernandez, who Jerry clearly adores, but not enough to go all the way — i.e., help him move.
In order to beef up “The Boyfriend” into a two-part episode that could help boost ratings during sweeps week, the writers also wove in a storyline in which Hernandez dates Elaine and, most notably, they concocted an elaborate parody of Oliver Stone’s JFK.
As documented in a mock Zapruder film, Kramer and Newman accuse the first baseman of spitting on them following a 1987 loss to the Phillies. But as Jerry points out, via his “Magic Loogie” theory, their story is contradicted by the “immutable laws of physics,” suggesting the presence of a second spitter.

Seinfeld was known for its main characters’ inability to hold long-term relationships, with Elaine Benes dating plenty of eccentric men over the course of nine seasons. As the only woman in the main group, Elaine was responsible for bringing many of the most memorable male characters into Seinfeld’s story by dating them. Aside from Elaine’s long-term relationship with Jerry before the sitcom, a few of her most iconic significant others include Puddy, the “Close-Talker,” Bizarro Jerry, New York Mets baseball player Keith Hernandez, and the unfortunately-named Joel Rifkin.

The hustle of show business means people not-infrequently have two projects hitting the market at the same time.
Even so, filmmaker Nick Davis is the creative force behind one of the more unusual doubleheaders in recent memory. He directed ESPN “30 for 30” limited series Once Upon a Time in Queens, an account of the World Series-winning, earth-scorching 1986 New York Mets. The two-night, four hour docuseries, whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel, premieres tonight and concludes tomorrow. Also today, Knopf has published Davis’s book, Competing with Idiots, a dual portrait of Joseph and Herman Mankiewicz that had been in the works for nearly two decades. The Hollywood royals were his great-uncle and grandfather, respectively.
“I’ve thought about what common ground there is between these projects,” Davis said in an interview with Deadline. “And I think what it is is that I have no memory of not being Herman Mankiewicz’s grandson.

ESPN examined the 1990s Chicago Bulls in a celebrated documentary series and probed the fortunes of the 1970s New York Yankees in a serialized drama. Now the sports-media giant has big plans for the New York Mets.
ESPN Films plans to release “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” a four-part series on the 1986 Mets, later this year on both ESPN and ESPN Plus. The series, produced under the umbrella of the Disney unit’s “30 for 30” documentary unit, is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Sal “Cousin Sal” Iacono, Kimmelot’s Scott Lonker, and MLB’s Nick Trotta. It is directed and produced by Nick Davis.
The program will tell the story of the Mets’ World Series comeback, using hours of never-before-seen footage of the team. Players featured include: Bobby Ojeda; Darryl Strawberry; manager Davey Johnson; Dwight Gooden; Keith Hernandez; Kevin Mitchell; Lenny Dykstra; Mookie Wilson; Roger McDowell; Sid Fernandez; and Wally Backman.

The 1986 World Series-winning run by the New York Mets will get multi-part documentary treatment by ESPN in a project under the 30 for 30 banner whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel.
ESPN Films said Thursday the series would chronicle the team’s exploits on and off the field. In the Series, the Boston Red Sox were one strike away from victory before a two-out rally and a ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson slipped through the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. Kimmel, an unabashed fan of the Mets, will executive produce the documentary under his Kimmelot production banner, with Sal Iacono (“Cousin Sal”), Scott Lonker, Jordana Hochman and Mlb’s Nick Trotta. Nick Davis will direct.
The multi-part series will feature hours of never-before-seen footage of the ’86 Mets, a team known just as much for its off-field exploits as it was for its on-field dominance. It also came during a unique moment in New York baseball history: When the Mets were arguably more popular than their cross-town rival Yankees, who were in the midst of a dry spell (that would obviously not last long).

Imagine a world where Seinfeld was instead titled “Costanza.”
It doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. It doesn’t roll off the tongue.
But it might be a more accurate title.
Despite taking place in his apartment, despite the stand-up bits that open and close so many episodes, and despite his name gracing the title of the series, Jerry Seinfeld is not the true protagonist of Seinfeld.
That would be George Constanza.
A protagonist is the leading character in a story whose motivations, goals, and actions we most closely follow. On Seinfeld, George is the character most frequently occupying this position.
Seinfeld’s structure almost always follows along an A-plot (the main plot) a B-plot (a side plot) and a C-plot, and each of these plots come together at the end of the episode for a final punch line.

Against all climatological odds, March 26, 2020 proved to be the perfect weather day for Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. The temperature reached 57 degrees in New York, 67 in Los Angeles, and stayed in the 60s through much of the country in-between. It was a ideal time for communities to gather together, sit in the sun, enjoy some hotdogs, and take in America’s Pastime.
Of course, we didn’t get to do any of that on March 26. Nor will we the week after that, nor for many weeks still yet to come. Baseball, like everything else, is on hold while the world deals with the surging coronavirus pandemic. But while the games may not be getting played, the spirit of the sport soldiers on.

Ron Darling, a former starting pitcher on the New York Mets 1986 World Series team who has been a broadcaster for several years with New York-area cable network Sny as well as Turner Sports, revealed he has thyroid cancer.
Despite the diagnosis, Darling said he is aiming to return to the air in about a month. He had already been sidelined from broadcasts since April for an operation to remove a mass in his chest. During the operation, doctors discovered the cancer.
“My doctors have said they are optimistic that the cancer is treatable and that I would be back on the air talking baseball in the next month or so,” Darling, 58, said in a statement. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their continued support.”
Keith Hernandez, Darling’s former Mets teammate and on-air partner, tweeted his get-well wishes.

It might have been one of the bumpiest primary-campaign finishes in New York state history, but 27-year-old Julia Salazar pulled it off, upsetting 16-year incumbent Martin Dilan to clinch the nomination for the state senate’s 18th District, representing a large swath of northern Brooklyn.
Salazar, a community organizer and Democratic Socialists of America (Dsa) candidate, beat Dilan with roughly 57 percent of the vote as of this writing.

Exactly one week before the New York state primary, 27-year-old Julia Salazar faced a political candidate’s worst nightmare. She briskly walked away as reporters chased her, shouting questions about a new scandal — her fifth in five months on the campaign trail.
This particular controversy involved allegations from her college years. In 2011, Salazar was arrested for impersonating Keith Hernandez’s wife in order to commit bank fraud. Charges were never brought, yet the Daily Mail concluded that she’d had an affair with the former Mets star, also known for his Seinfeld cameos.

Judd Apatow’s first documentary movie “Doc & Darryl” let the funnyman explore a subject close to his heart — the lives of troubled Major League Baseball icons Dwight “Doc” Gooden and Darryl Strawberry — but the result wasn’t as heartening as he expected.

On Saturday, Brooklyn's minor league baseball team, the Cyclones, suffered a brutal 18-2 loss against the Aberdeen IronBirds, but they came away with the goodwill of a New York crowd as they celebrated the 25th anniversary of Seinfeld. In honor of the occasion, the Cyclones renamed the stadium Vandelay Industries Park, and got dressed up in puffy shirts, invited Larry Thomas (a.k.a. the Soup Nazi), and gave away Keith Hernandez "Magic Loogie" bobbleheads. After the game, they held an Elaine Benes dance-off, where various women tried their very best to dance very badly. It's harder than it looks! And let's remember how it's really done:...

The New York Mets organization isn't exactly known for its exquisite taste in financial partners. This is a franchise, after all, that recently settled a lawsuit stemming from its association with Bernard L. Madoff for $162 million. So it was amusing when Michelle Malkin and other right-wing commentators reacted to the news that comedian Bill Maher had purchased a minority stake in the team with the kind of moral indignation they normally reserve for things like taxes, or efforts to remove the Ten Commandments from suburban courtrooms.
Naturally, nobody found the spectacle more amusing than the new owner himself, who has been known to ridicule the right on his HBO political-comedy series, "Real Time With Bill Maher." "You know they saw this yesterday and went, 'Bill Maher? Owns part of a baseball team? Aaaargghh!'" Maher told The Huffington Post. "And then they had to figure out why they were mad.

With Eastbound & Down’s series finale set to air this Sunday and the 2012 Mlb season a few weeks underway, baseball is on the brain of many a sports-loving TV fan. With such a long and rich history, and such a strong place in American culture, it’s only natural for so many series to take it on, if only for an episode or two. Here is a sampling of the many great baseball-inspired episodes from American TV, the Eastbound & Down Memorial Top 10-
Honorable Mentions: My Boys, the ending of Band of Brothers, Psych (“Dead Man’s Curveball”), and Dragnet (“Robbery: Baseball”).
10. Married… with Children, “A Man for No Seasons”

Baseball games have gone through a fascinating evolution. In the beginning, they were minimalist masterpieces (gamers of a certain age still talk about the greatness of "Rbi Baseball"), but then got bogged down by detail-oriented simulations (for about 10 years in there, these games were no fun at all). But by appealing to both stat-minded baseball obsessives and more casual fans who just want to see pretty stadiums and knock around homers (as well as some healthy competition from 2K Sports' baseball franchise), the "Mlb: The Show" series has become required playing every spring. What does the 2011 version bring to the lineup?
The Basics
The first truly great American sport (suck it, lacrosse) doesn't change its rules very often, but the style of play and approach to the game is continuously evolving. This year, the big headline on "The Show" is less a presentational one and more a mechanical one: A...

How-ard!! With two short but knife-sharp syllables and a whole lot of nosy questions, Wolowitz's overbearing mother on The Big Bang Theory is quickly establishing herself as one of television's great unseen characters. Think Charlie from Charlie's Angels or Rhoda's Carlton the Doorman, but with a Noo Yawk accent and louder. Much louder. We dialed up the actress responsible for the hilarious holler, Carol Ann Susi, whose on-camera credits include Seinfeld's famous episode with Keith Hernandez, "The Boyfriend." And, yes, she really sounds like that in real life.

The charming and innovative movie Bottle, directed by Kirsten Lepore, just won the Grand Jury Sparky Award for Animated Short at the 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival. You can watch it in full above. The film is a heartbreaking love story between a sand creature and a snow creature separated by climate, but united by their ability to communicate through messages in a bottle they are able to pass back and forth. As the long-distance romance heats up, is there any chance these two lonely souls will eventually unite?
Bottle has been on a real roll the past few months, having screened at the 2010 AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, was a finalist in the first ever Vimeo Awards and won the Best Student Film award at the Anim’est International Animation Film Festival.

Even if you don’t like sports in general or baseball in particular (like me), you still have to watch the absolutely hilarious I’m Keith Hernandez short film by Rob Perri. If you do like baseball, then you might be mildly disturbed by the time the whole 20-minute movie is over. And don’t show it to kids! This video is Nsfw and Nsfc (not safe for children). For the most part it’s innocuous — if you consider the discussion of rampant drug abuse to be “innocuous” — but there’s a scene or two that’s very adult in nature. But, this is an excellently produced parody of hagiographic TV biographies of famous people, complete with perfect deadpan narration describing the most shocking things.

If getting sand in your crotch while watching awesome short films sounds like a good time, then you better head on out to the first ever Black Rock City Film Festival, which is taking place right now, Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, at the legendary Burning Man gathering in the Nevada desert. If you’re already at Burning Man, hopefully you get cell reception and can see this lineup so you know where the best place is to be every night.
This event is a joint endeavor for the Boston Underground Film Festival and San Francisco’s IndieFest, who have selected over two dozen short films to screen at their open air theater. There are no start times for when these films will screen, but I would assume it would be sometime after sundown. Plus, there will be cocktail parties before and after the screenings, as well as Opening Night and Closing Night bashes.
