Producer Salma Hayek Pinault says her heartfelt family dramedy El Sabor de la Navidad as it tackles the issue of transgender acceptance in Mexican families reflects a changing and more progressive country and culture.

“Misunderstandings in families have to do with generational differences,” the Mexican-American star-turned-producer told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of a world premiere for director Alejandro Lozano’s Christmas family movie at the Toronto Film Festival on Wednesday evening. Hayek Pinault also marked her support for the SAG-AFTRA strikes by proudly wearing a T-shirt adorned with the actor union’s protest logo while at TIFF.

“It’s not only Spanish (language), but a Mexican film. And so we’re very grateful that we were able to bring it to Toronto and that the union was supportive of it, otherwise I would not have come, without permission,” she said as her film debuted at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

The second TelevisaUnivision movie from Salma Hayek Pinault’s Ventanarosa Productions will get its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

El Sabor de la Navidad (working title A Merry Mexican Christmas) will bow Sept. 13 as part of TIFF’s special presentations program before becoming available on the Spanish-language streaming platform ViX in November.

In the tradition of many holiday classics, El Sabor de la Navidad will follow three storylines that inevitably converge in the third act. All set in Mexico City during Christmastime, the first story follows an estranged daughter seeking reconciliation with her family; the second spotlights two rival Santa Clauses in Alameda Central Park; and the third features a lonely chef who cooks Christmas dinners for other families catching feelings for her assistant.

Lionsgate’s English-language remake of Francis Veber’s French feature hit The Valet has been acquired by Disney’s direct-to-consumer platforms for a summer 2022 release as a Hulu Original in the U.S. and a Disney+ Star Original abroad.

Directed by Richard Wong and starring Eugenio Derbez and Samara Weaving, The Valet follows Olivia (Weaving), a movie star who enlists Antonio (Derbez) – a parking valet – to pose as her lover to cover for a relationship with a married man (Max Greenfield). “The Valet” is switching distributors.

The upcoming comedy starring Eugenio Derbez of “Instructions Not Included” fame was originally set up for release by Lionsgate. It’s been sold to the Walt Disney Company, which will release it domestically on Hulu in summer 2022. “The Valet” will be released internationally on Disney Plus as a Star Original.

The film is an English-language remake of a French film of the same name. It is directed by Richard Wong (“Come as You Are”) and co-stars Samara Weaving (“Ready or Not”).

As humans, we strive for interaction between one another, be that lengthy conversations or the most brief of Facebook-style interchanges about the most banal of subjects. That very concept is at the root of the new film from first time filmmaker and Cannes Film Festival award winner (Camera d’Or, 2011), Michael Rowe. Mexico has been kicking ass over the last few years in terms of pounding out some great horror flicks as well as some great directors. With the alien invasion craze in full swing here in the States, it was only a matter of time before the hysteria traveled south of the Border.
