Well before Kevin Costner was known as John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s hit Yellowstone series, he starred in and directed the 1990 Western Dances with Wolves. The film, which went on to win Best Picture at the 1991 Academy Awards, will stream for free on Tubi starting Jan. 1, 2025.

In addition to its Best Picture Oscar, Dances with Wolves, the first film Costner ever directed, earned him the Best Director Award. The movie is based on the 1988 novel of the same title by Michael Blake, who also penned the screenplay for the film. Dances with Wolves stars Costner as Lieutenant John Dunbar, a member of the Union Army, who in the middle of the Civil War is injured, but manages to survive after a stand against the Confederates. Dunbar, after requesting a transfer, leads his own fort and befriends the Lakota tribe that is nearby.

It has been nearly 35 years since Dance with Wolves was first released in 1990. While it was not Kevin Costner's first Western, as that honor went to 1985's Silverado, it was the first movie that he ever directed, and it quickly became a critical and commercial success. It was a perfect movie for Costner's career.

As perfect as it might have been, however, there were some historical elements that it completely failed to acknowledge or respect. Some elements are perfectly depicted, but many fail to acknowledge the reality of life on the American Frontier and it even fails to honor the book that it was adapting.
