Original Eagles Guitarist Bernie Leadon Comes to Terms With the Past in New Batch of Songs
Image
Right before the Eagles played the final encore of their two-year, 109-date History of the Eagles Tour in July 2015, Glenn Frey walked up to guitarist Bernie Leadon and gave him a big hug. Leadon is the band’s founding guitarist and a co-writer of many of their early songs, including “Witchy Woman,” but he left in 1975 following an infamous backstage fight where he poured a beer on Frey’s head. And now here they were embracing following their first tour together in 40 years.

“He said, ‘It’s been great having you out here,...

Hear the Rolling Stones Go Zydeco in New Tribute to Clifton Chenier
Image
The Rolling Stones’ reverence for blues and country is as well-established as Keith Richards’ penchant for scarves. But you may not immediately associate the band with zydeco, the French-sung, syncopated folk-dance music of Louisiana. Yet, according to Richards, they’re fans of that genre too. “We never just listened to the blues,” Richards tells Rolling Stone. “Zydeco has been a part of what we always listen to, the Mississippi blues, and it’s not a long way from there to Louisiana. We were always listening to stuff from down there.

Clifton Chenier Was a Music Icon. The Rolling Stones and Lucinda Williams Want You to Know Why
Image
A few months ago, Joel Savoy, the Louisiana Cajun musician and label owner, was at a local pressing plant looking over the cover art for a just-finished tribute album to zydeco legend Clifton Chenier. The record already had a high-end roster — from veterans Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle to relative newcomers Charley Crockett and bluegrass picker Molly Tuttle — all singing and playing songs associated with Chenier, his accordion, and his blues-soaked singing. But then Savoy suddenly had to hit pause: The Rolling Stones had finally submitted their contribution, a year after they agreed to participate.

Grammys 2025: The Complete Guide to Parties and Events (Updating)
Image
This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

However, a handful of events will carry on with a charitable component, including the starry Clive Davis party and MusiCares tribute concert. Check out this year’s still-on Grammys celebrations below.

Wednesday, Jan. 29

John Oates Cements His Americana Cred at BMI Troubadour Ceremony
Image
When John Oates moved to Nashville in 2010 to work on his next solo album, he didn’t do what so many pop stars before him had done and pander to a mainstream country music audience. Instead, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member immersed himself in the city’s roots music community, collaborating with pickers, producers, and songwriters like Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and the late great Mike Henderson to create the celebration of Americana music Mississippi Mile.

Many in that same community assembled to pay tribute to Oates on...

John Oates Is Getting the BMI Troubadour Treatment
Image
It’s been a wild year of ups and downs for John Oates. He saw the dissolution of his longtime creative partnership with Daryl Hall, watched himself work through the emotions of that breakup in the press, and released the cathartic new album Reunion, his most introspective solo project yet.

Now, Oates, a fixture of the Nashville music scene since he took up residence in the city in 2010, follows in the footsteps of names like John Prine and Lucinda Williams when he receives the BMI Troubadour Award this year.

Keith Urban Plays Some Wicked Guitar on Zz Top’s ‘Rough Boy’
Image
Zz Top were never really a ballad band. Think “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Legs.” But for 1986’s Afterburner they tried their hand at a power ballad with “Rough Boy” — this was the Eighties after all. Earlier this week in Nashville, Keith Urban put his own spin on “Rough Boy” at a special event honoring Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons.

Urban was in attendance for the annual BMI Troubadour dinner, an industry event held each September by the performing-rights org to salute a select artist as its “Troubadour.” Last year’s went to Lucinda Williams,...

Lyle Lovett, Country Music’s Most Mysterious Man, Can’t Stop Rambling
Image
Standing behind a camera atop a tripod onstage at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts in Franklin, North Carolina, Lyle Lovett peers into the viewfinder and pauses for a moment before hitting the shutter button.

Lovett’s road manager yells loudly, “Fire in the hole,” as the room goes silent, the only subsequent sound being the click of the camera. The entire scene repeats itself a handful of times before Lovett is satisfied with how the empty venue, soon-to-be-packed with concertgoers, is portrayed.

“In terms of every type...

Muppets Mayhem Answers Every Question You Never Knew You Had About Dr. Teeth's Band — Grade It!
Image
After decades of hard rocking (and even harder rolling), Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are finally putting out their first studio album. Can you picture that?

The premise of Disney+’s The Muppets Mayhem — as laid out in the first of 10 episodes, all of which are now available to stream — is simple. A plucky young record executive named Nora (Lilly Singh) needs to save her dying label, so she reaches out to the one contracted group who has yet to actually record the album they promised. That band, naturally, turns out to be Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

‘The Voice’: Our favorite battles from all 21 seasons
Image
The battle round of Season 21 of “The Voice” came to a close on October 19 leaving coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Ariana Grande with eight artists remaining on their teams. Throughout this round each coach was allowed one steal and one save. The eight members of each team now consist of six artists who won their battles, one losing artist each coach stole from another team and one losing artist the coach saved from their own team.

The most memorable battle of the season pitted two soul singers against each other, singing a pop/rock song and representing their country coach. When Wendy Moten and Manny Keith took the stage for Team Blake performing “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” by Sting it was almost a foregone conclusion that Wendy would wipe the floor with the performer 25 years her junior. Manny went toe-to-toe with the seasoned...

Nashville Film Festival Announces Hybrid In-Person/Online Slate, to Include Brian Wilson, A-ha, Fanny Music Docs
Image
The Nashville Film Festival will return in late September and early October with a hybrid slate of in-person and online screenings and events — with several music documentaries figuring into the programming, including docs about Brian Wilson, the pioneering 1970s all-female rock band Fanny and the MTV-era group A-ha, plus the world premiere of a film that takes John Hiatt and Jerry Douglas into Nashville’s famed RCA Studio B.

Music-based films take up only a sliver of the overall roster at the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 festival. Among narrative highlights, the festival will wrap up with A24’s “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play, with Karam and other guests from the film in attendance.

Altogether, 160 films — 45 of which are feature-length entries — have been selected for the 52nd annual festival, a little more than 50 of which will screen in-person at venues throughout Nashville. More than 30 of the features are getting their U.

Richard Weitz’s ‘Quarantunes’ All-Star Benefit Livestreams Pass the $4 Million Fundraising Mark
Image
A few months ago, it might have been unimaginable that multimillion dollar fundraising efforts would be hosted not in black tie from behind a ballroom dais but in ballcaps in front of a refrigerator. But the “RWQuarantunes” livestream music series has proven that show-business philanthropy can take as much of a different tack as anything during the pandemic.

On Sunday night, the series of star-studded, invitation-only live charity shows, hosted by top agent Richard Weitz and his 17-year-old daughter Demi, passed the $4 million mark in contributions made to a wide array of causes. Their ability to pull that off from their kitchen countertop (aside from one online field trip to the shuttered Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago) may augur poorly for the immediate future of the tux rental business … but it’s been good news for L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai, several New York City hospitals, Nashville’s Vanderbilt Medical Center,...

‘The Masked Singer’ predictions: Final 3 contestants will be Night Angel, Frog and Turtle — Sorry, Rhino!
Image
One contestant will be eliminated the end of Wednesday’s semi-finals round of “The Masked Singer,” leaving only three still in the running to win the Golden Mask. According to Gold Derby’s predictions, the Final 3 will be the Night Angel, the Frog and the Turtle. That means, sadly, the Rhino will be eliminated in fourth place and forced to remove his horned mask in front of America. Do you agree or disagree with our readers’ odds? Go ahead and make your predictions before the Wednesday, May 13 episode.

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Rhino is …
Image
The Rhino has rallied since he was almost eliminated on the April 1 episode of “The Masked Singer.” He is among the five contenders competing on the May 6 quarterfinal. The Rhino is coming off of his best week ever, with his cover of “Die a Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett earning him praise from the four judges.

The previous week he had done well with his version of “10,000 Hours” by Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber. Just prior to that had been when he faltered with his cover of “What a Man Gotta Do” by Jonas Brothers. His earlier performances of “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, “Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan and “Have a Little Faith in Me” by John Hiatt were all much better suited to his voice.

We’ve been doing some digging to try and figure out who is hiding inside the Rhino costume.

He was declared safe for each of his first three turns in the spotlight: “Have a Little Faith in Me.” by John Hiatt ,”Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan and “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

We’ve watched all those performances again...

Lilly Hiatt Summons an Urgent New Nashville Sound on Her Album ‘Walking Proof’
Hightown (2020)
Lilly Hiatt likes being alone. Earlier this year, when one could still travel, she left her boyfriend and cat behind in Tennessee to spend four days exploring the Oregon coast. When she was a kid, she’d race off to summer camp, only to look forward to going home at the end of the day.

“I couldn’t wait until I was by myself later, with my imagination,” Hiatt says, calling from her apartment in Nashville where she’s happily been in isolation with her records and her cat. She...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Rhino is …
The Masked Singer (2019)
Last time we saw the Rhino on “The Masked Singer” he had just found out he numbered among the top 3 in Group C. On the April 1 episode, he returned, along with Astronaut and Night Angel, to face off against the best of both Groups A and B.

This Super 9 are fighting for their places in the quarter-finals. To do so, they must win over both the studio audience and four judges. Of the remaining contestants, the Rhino is the one who has shown the most improvement.

He started off shakily with his version of the John Hiatt hit “Have a Little Faith in Me.” He did a whole lot better with “Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan. And he proved to be quite the showman with his take on “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

We’ve watched all those performances again as well as the three clues videos.

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Rhino is …
The Masked Singer (2019)
There will only be three of the six contestants in Group C of “The Masked Singer” still standing in the competition after the March 25 episode. The quartet who faced off in this installment, which Fox deemed to be the Championship, were disguised as the Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino and T-Rex.

Of these four celebrities, the one who is the best all-around performer is the Rhino. In his first appearance that aired on March 11, he impressed both the studio audience and four judges with his cover of “Have a Little Faith in Me” by John Hiatt. He returned last week with another great performance with his version of “Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan.

We’ve watched both those two performances repeatedly as well as the accompanying clues videos. We think we know the name of the famous fellow hidden behind the Rhino mask. Keep reading for all “The Masked Singer” spoilers,...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Rhino is …
The Masked Singer (2019)
A huge part of the appeal of “The Masked Singer” is trying to figure out which famous faces are hidden beneath those masks. While we did well with figuring out the real names of those six celebrities sent home from Groups A and B, we were way off base with our best guess on the first woman sent packing from Group C: Bear (Sarah Palin). The rest of the contenders in Group C returned to compete again on March 18 disguised as the Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino, Swan and T-Rex.

Of these famous five folks, we are most certain about who is hiding inside the Rhino costume. Last week, he rocked the house with his cover of “Have a Little Faith in Me” by John Hiatt. We’ve watched that performance and his clues video over and over and think we’ve nailed his name. Keep reading for all “The Masked Singer” spoilers,...

The Masked Singer (2019)
The third season of “The Masked Singer” introduced a new twist of separating its 18 contestants into three groups of six. Initially the groups performed for the audience and judges, with three being eliminated from each. Group A booted the likes of Lil Wayne (Robot), Drew Carey (Llama) and Chaka Khan (Miss Monster). Group B said goodbye to Tony Hawk (Elephant), Dionne Warwick (Mouse) and Tom Bergeron (Taco). Group C has so far eliminated Sarah Palin (Bear), with two more to follow.

At the end of the group rounds, only nine costumed celebs will still remain in the competition to fight it out for the Golden Mask. Get a closer look at the Super 9 contestants of “The Masked Singer” Season 3 in our photo gallery above.

‘The Masked Singer’ Group C power rankings: Night Angel and T-Rex rip up the competition
The Masked Singer (2019)
This past week’s episode of “The Masked Singer” brought us the beginning of the competitors in Group C. We’ve already had one elimination from that group and now we need to think about which ones are most likely to keep advancing to make it into the Super 9. To see if we can make sense of where each contestant stands, we’ve ranked the remaining five celebrities in order of their chances of taking home the coveted Golden Mask. Do you think we have these in the right order? How would you rank them? Make sure to let us know in the comments section below.

This week’s elimination was, without a doubt, the craziest reveal that I’ve ever seen on this show. The pink and blue Bear was revealed to be none other than former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee, Sarah Palin. Yeah, I’m still processing that one.

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals the Identity of the Bear: Here’s the Star Under the Mask
The Masked Singer (2019)
Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 7 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 11 on Fox.

We can bear-ly believe it: Former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin was unmasked as the Bear on Wednesday night’s edition of “The Masked Singer,” and her song choice was… well, unexpected.

Palin, who performed “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix A Lot in the episode, told host Nick Cannon that “to not be able to see much of anything out of this is really nice. It takes the sharp edges off the world. Everything looks a little softer, nicer. I needed this.” Why the bear? “The bear is part of my nickname growing up and the whole ‘Mama Bear’ thing, and they’re in Alaska. They’re in their front yards. Bear was easy. I was so appreciative of ‘The Masked Singer,’ they let me exploit men. I...

“After almost 50 years in this business, after many dreams, it’s still unbelievable to me that I’d still have a few firsts left. After Galantis’ ‘Faith,’ Dolly Parton Ready to Make More Dance Music
Dolly Parton
For Dolly Parton, her new song “Faith” with Edm duo Galantis and Dutch singer Mr. Probz, came in “divine order.”

“They were trying to track me down,” she says by phone, calling from the music video shoot in Franklin, Tennessee. “I guess Linus [Eklöw] and Christian [Karlsson], who are Galantis, had this song and they supposedly both were fans of mine. Somebody said ‘Do you think we can find her? Do you think she’d do it?’”

“She has always been one of our dream collaborators, but we honestly thought getting her...

Dolly Parton, Galantis Host Bus Dance Party in ‘Faith’ Video
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton joins Mr. Probz on Galantis’ uplifting new song “Faith.” This is Parton’s first foray into Edm; the song will be featured on Galantis’ upcoming third album Church.

“Faith” is a reworking of John Hiatt’s 1987 single “Have A Little Faith in Me.” Parton appears as the driver on a bus that suddenly breaks down. The dejected passengers are encouraged by Parton to cheer up, and as the song picks up during Mr. Probz’s opening verse, they begin to do just that. Eventually, they not only dance and groove on the bus,...

Farm Aid 2019: 10 Best Things We Saw
Getting 37,000 people to a remote, rural amphitheater in East Troy, Wisconsin, for Farm Aid isn’t hard when the bill features Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Luke Combs, Bonnie Raitt, John Mellencamp, and several other big names. Getting them to stay for 12 hours in a downpour that turned the packed lawn (where the vast majority of people sat) into a sea of mud is much harder. It required a pretty spectacular show, one that left people so stunned they stayed put hour after hour even though most of them couldn’t...

Hiss Golden Messenger’s ‘Terms of Surrender’ is a Sweet Record About Love, Family and Fighting Through Darkness
Jenny Lewis
A California hardcore kid who moved to North Carolina about 20 years ago to pursue a rootsier strain of self-discovering earnestness, country-soul singer-songwriter Mc Taylor is the kind of nice guy you want to root for. How nice? His sixth LP as the leader of Hiss Golden Messenger opens with “I Need A Teacher,” a sunny slice of Seventies-steeped wonderment, redolent of Little Feat and the Allman Brothers, in which Taylor prays for a shot of redemption in our “broken American moment.” In the musical tradition he’s working in, a...
