Gorillaz Confirm 2025 Release for New Album
Image
Gorillaz have confirmed that their next album will be released in 2025.

Speaking to the French publication Les Inrockuptibles earlier this week, Damon Albarn revealed that he’s recently been “finishing a new Gorillaz album,” which he alluded would arrive later this year. Referencing the project and his new opera — The Magic Flute II: La Malédiction, which opened this week in Paris — he said, “One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025! Unless someone accuses me of taking my foot off the gas!”

The news was further confirmed by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett, who supposedly replied to the fan page, everythingorillaz, saying “Yes the new album is coming out this year.”

Additional details are largely unknown at this time, but word of a new Gorillaz album has been around since 2023, when Albarn wrapped his reunion with Blur and indicated he was ready to focus on the beloved animated project again.

Gramp introduces new villains and promises an epic showdown in the penultimate issue of the series.

The third issue of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham is set to release this September, and DC Comics has unveiled a new animated trailer to mark the occasion. Pour Yourself a Tall Glass of ‘Tank Girl’: Bi-Coded Sci-Fi Bubbles Over with the Lori Petty of It All
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!

One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.

No, I’m not talking about Furiosa, Charlize Theron’s iconic badass in “Mad Max: Fury Road.

Batman Gets Official Redesign from Gorillaz Co-Creator Jamie Hewlett
Image
Jamie Hewlett's stunning variant cover for DC's Black Label Batman series showcases his iconic art style. Hewlett's artistic touch was personally requested by Rafael Grampa, uniting two artistic icons on the acclaimed Batman series. The overwhelmingly positive response to Hewlett's variant cover highlights fans' excitement for his return to the comic arena and the possibility of future contributions from him.

Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett's creative genius collides with the Dark Knight in a stunning variant cover for DC's ongoing Batman series. Hewlett's iconic art style knocks this rendition out of the park, making a persuasive case for DC to secure him as a regular variant cover artist if he's amenable to the idea.

Jamie Hewlett sent the internet into meltdown with his stunning variant cover reveal for the upcoming issue of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham. Releasing May 28th, this marks book three of Rafael Grampá's acclaimed DC Black Label series.

Damon Albarn Says Blur Are Going on Hiatus Again: ‘It’s Too Much for Me’
Image
Blur is going on hiatus again following their recent reunion, which yielded their ninth studio album, The Ballad of Darren.

In a new interview with French magazine Les Inrockuptibles (via Far Out Magazine), Blur frontman Damon Albarn said, “It is time to wrap up this campaign. It’s too much for me. It was the right thing to do and an immense honor to play these songs again, spend time with these guys, make an album, blah-blah-blah.”

The band — comprising guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James, and drummer Dave Rowntree...

Banksy’s Identity Finally Revealed in Lost BBC Interview?
Image
Since Banksy emerged as a street artist in the early 2000s, one of the most intriguing aspects of the Bristol-based painter has been his identity. Over the years, various people have been linked to the moniker, among them Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, a comic book illustrator who also co-created Tank Girl, and Massive Attack co-founder Robert Del Naja, based on the fact that both hail from Bristol and Del Naja also dabbled in graffiti.

Now, an unearthed BBC recording from 2003 appears to confirm that Banksy is indeed a Robert, just not Del Naja.

Banksy Revealed? Artist Confirms Name in Lost BBC Interview
Image
Who is Banksy? It is one of the art world’s, perhaps even pop culture’s, most enduring mysteries since the street artist burst onto the scene in the early 2000s. But we may be one step closer to the artist’s true identity following the recent discovery of a lost BBC interview in which Banksy appears to confirm his name.

The BBC reported on Monday that it had unearthed a 2003 interview between the young, up-and-coming street artist Banksy and the former BBC arts correspondent Nigel Wrench. The original recording was edited for a spot on BBC radio, which was then used as part of the BBC podcast series The Banksy Story that was released in July. But Wrench, having listened to the podcast series, was inspired to revisit the full original recording and discovered a lot more buried information about the artist that was never used.

In the discovered audio,...

Jamie Foxx's Spawn Reboot Release Date Unchanged Despite Multiple Delay Factors
Image
Blumhouse executive Jason Blum remains committed to the 2025 release date for the Spawn reboot despite ongoing setbacks and delays. The history of Spawn's troubled development mirrors that of other '90s comic book movie reboots, including The Crow. The anticipated release of Spawn in 2025 could pave the way for a revival of independent comic book movies in a landscape dominated by major labels.

Despite a series of ongoing setbacks, Blumhouse executive Jason Blum has doubled down on the planned 2025 release date for the Spawn reboot starring Jamie Foxx. Based on the supernatural comic book hero created by Todd McFarlane, plans for either a sequel or a big-screen reboot of the property have been languishing in development since the original 1997 movie adaptation with Michael Jai White. In 2017, Blumhouse Productions announced they would be partnering with McFarlane on the Foxx-led reboot; however, the project would go on to repeatedly miss...

‘The Monkey King’ Review: Netflix Toon Deftly Reshapes Chinese Literary Classic Into Action-Packed Fun for Kids
Image
The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.

Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.

Following well-received originals like Klaus, Over the Moon, My Father’s Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood — plus such smart acquisitions as The Mitchells vs. the Machines...

Damon Albarn Is Working on Another Opera
Image
The perpetually busy Damon Albarn has revealed he is working on another opera. As part of our latest cover story, the Blur and Gorillaz frontman tells Consequence he is putting German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s The Magic Flute Part Two to music for the first time.

“I got offered this amazing opportunity to set Goethe’s Magic Flute Part Two to music and song,” says Albarn, who previously created an opera based on Elizabethan scientist John Dee in 2011. “I’m kind of teaching myself Goethe, which is not as great a task as it would have been if I hadn’t done a lot of study about, you know, other Renaissance men like Dr. John Dee. I’ve got a lot of the bases because I had to go a long way back to even vaguely understand what that was about. So, I did a lot of that 10 years ago.

Margot Robbie: “Tank Girl”
Although she is getting a reputation as a real life ‘tank girl’ due to an unfortunate string of poorly performing films, actress and producer Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment continues to develop the futuristic live-action feature "Tank Girl", for director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte ("As You Are"), based on the Dark Horse 1988 Brit comic book series, created by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett, featuring Robbie (again) as a wise-cracking skank:

Gorillaz, Cracker Island review: Damon Albarn’s band of apes return with their best album since 2005
Image
“I’m on one per cent, but I’m there with you,” croons 2D on Gorillaz’ most enjoyable album since 2005’s Demon Days. It’s a sentiment that reflects the record’s commitment to finding collective fun in the face of isolating fatigue. Gorillaz have always been an apocalypse party of an act, but now, they’re laughing again. There’s a loose-limbed elation to the indie-funk grooves they find, with guests ranging from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks to Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala and LA bass-bouncer Thundercat. And a sleepy solidarity in the more melancholy moments, which include a tender acoustic duet with Beck.

Britain’s first virtual band was created in 2001 by Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett in response to what the earnest indie purists saw as the “manufactured” state of chart music. But over the next two decades, the project has given the Blur...

The Gorillaz Animated Movie Has Been Canceled At Netflix
Image
Gorillaz is a band that pretty much everyone has heard of, but only their biggest fans know of their complicated and often very goofy lore. What started off as a collaboration between Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett has become arguably the most successful virtual band of all time, with Stuart "2D" Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs amassing a loyal legion of fans. Thanks to the band's cartoony appearances, an animated film about them would work extremely well, and they got pretty close to having one thanks to Netflix.

Unfortunately, Netflix has slashed its animated output over the past year, and according to Albarn, the Gorillaz film was one of their sacrifices. In an interview with the Dutch website Humo, the singer refused to name names, but said that their first foray into the medium of film was canceled due to Netflix's animation budget cuts.

Feel Bad Inc: Gorillaz Netflix Movie Has Been Scrapped
Damon Albarn
Later this week Gorillaz, the cartoon pop band created by Blur stalwart Damon Albarn and “Tank Girl” cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, will release their eighth studio album, “Cracker Island.” The album is already receiving rave reviews (Rolling Stones called it the band’s “most purely pleasurable LP yet”) but, sadly, another Gorillaz project is no more.

Albarn, talking to Belgian publication Humo (via Stereogum), said the Gorillaz movie that was being worked on with Netflix is no longer happening: “The new record came about because Jamie and I were often in Los Angeles. We were working on a Gorillaz feature film, which will never happen.”

When the publication asked if the movie was “permanently suspended,” Albarn confirmed that, yes, it was dead. “That is to say, and without naming names because the whole matter has not yet been settled: the streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn.

Amazon Bets On Design Studio Superplastic With Cash & First Look Deal; Series Based On Crazed Janky & Guggimon Characters In The Works
Image
In 1967’s The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman’s fresh out of college Benjamin Braddock is told the future is in plastics. In 2023, Amazon is taking some of that advice to heart and betting some of its future on Superplastic.

To be specific, that wager on the snarling character design company is taking the form of a 20 million investment round via the House of Bezos’ Alexa Fund. Additionally, the Paul Budnitz and Huck Gee formed Superplastic have inked a first-look development deal with Amazon Studios to bring their saucy street level characters to the streaming screen.

To that end and drawing from some of Superplastic’s Og synthetic celebrities, The Janky & Guggimon Show is already in development at Amazon.

Beyond promising that “each episode features a cast of animated and human celebrity friends” and will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime if picked up to series, the studio has nothing more to say...

Gorillaz Keep Up the Pace With New Song ‘Silent Running’
Image
Gorillaz have shared a slinky new song, “Silent Running,” featuring longtime collaborator Adeleye Omotayo, from their upcoming album Cracker Island, out Feb. 24.

“Silent Running,” per a press release, was the first Cracker Island song Gorillaz worked on with producer Greg Kurstin at his studio in Los Angeles. Musical mastermind Damon Albarn described the mid-tempo funk gem as having “that sort of mesmerizing dreamlike state you get in when you’re just following some train of thought.”

Or, as Gorillaz’s animated frontman 2D evocatively put it, “Sometimes I get well...

Tank Girl Is The Anarchic Sci-Fi Movie We Need In Our Modern Dystopia
Image
The 1990s were a wild time, when fears of Y2K loomed and the upcoming turn of the millennium made it seem like the distant future was just within reach. As a result, there is a giant mess of science fiction films from this era, with each trying its best to predict the future. Many of them tried to prophesize what was coming in the next 30-40 years, which means that the futures they were trying to predict would be right... about... now. So how do they stack up? What did the movies of the '90s get right about our current reality, and what did they totally miss? Each week, I'll be breaking down a different '90s sci-fi flick and compare its version of the future to our actual timeline. This week, I'm kicking things off with Rachel Talalay's 1995 comic book adaptation, "Tank Girl."

"Tank Girl" was loosely...

Image
Gorillaz will be reimagined through the pens of over 40 artists in the cartoon band’s upcoming and self-explanatory Gorillaz Art Book.

For the 288-page book, Jamie Hewlett — the visual half of the Damon Albarn musical project — invited his favorite artists to recreate or reinterpret Gorillaz members 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs.

“Gorillaz have always collaborated with music but this is the first time we’ve done an art collaboration,” Hewlett said in a statement. “I’ve really enjoyed working with so many of my favorite artists and the result is this amazing book.

Gorillaz Conclude ‘Song Machine Season One’ Videos With ‘The Lost Chord’
Image
Gorillaz have closed out their series of Song Machine Season One: Strange Timez videos with “The Lost Chord,” inspired by the technicolor monster movies of decades past.

The latest visual picks up where “The Valley of the Pagans” video left off: With the animated Gorillaz members washed up on the shores of Plastic Beach, a nod to the band’s 2010 album. After coming to, the group encounter a giant, laser-eyed Kraken-like creature played by the song’s featured guest, British singer Leee John, who destroys the island before receding back into the sea.

Damon Albarn on Taking the Gorillaz Experience to the Next Level
Image
Gorillaz have always prided themselves on being the biggest virtual band in the world — so it makes sense that the cartoon pop act has adapted well to this dystopian year of life behind the screen. “We’ve just been waiting for this, really,” says Damon Albarn, 52, with a wry laugh.

Albarn spent much of 2020 working on Song Machine, a free-form Gorillaz singles series whose first season yielded an excellent album with guest features from U.K. rock legends like Robert Smith and Elton John (“absolute gentlemen, wonderful human beings”) along...

Gorillaz, Schoolboy Q Honor Arcade Classic Pac-Man on New Song
Image
Gorillaz recruited Schoolboy Q to honor Pac-Man on the animated outfit’s latest Song Machine track, “Pac-Man,” which arrives just weeks after the 40th anniversary of the arcade classic.

The song opens with Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn lacing his low voice over a thick beat that recalls the heyday of the G-funk era. The instrumentals get an added punch-up when Schoolboy Q first takes over, although the beat switches subtly again as the rapper glides over its woozy outro.

“Pac-Man” was recorded in London prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, with...

Image
Gorillaz have partnered with French-British rapper and singer Octavian for a new song, “Friday 13th,” which marks the latest installment in the animated outfit’s ongoing Song Machine series.

The track boasts a woozy groove filled with dreamy guitars, plus synths and drums that hit with a thud then carom into space. Octavian alternates between a steady flow and a sing-song drawl as he waxes about endless nights in his raspy lilt.

“Friday 13th” arrives with a video directed by Gorillaz’s artistic mastermind Jamie Hewlett. Filmed with everyone in...

Gorillaz Recruit Peter Hook for New Order-Inspired ‘Aries’
Peter Hook in Granada Reports (1980)
Gorillaz recruit Peter Hook for their New Order-inspired new song “Aries,” the latest installment in the cartoon rockers’ Song Machine series.

Damon Albarn and his animated outfit have ably assumed the musical costume of their featured guest, and — buoyed by Hook’s signature bass sound — have created a track reminiscent of New Order’s Factory Records heyday.

The accompanying video, directed by Gorillaz chief animator Jamie Hewlett, finds the band’s Albarn-avatar 2D and Murdoc riding a motorcycle along a photonegative landscape with a rust-colored sky. It’s unclear when the video was created,...

Gorillaz: Reject False Icons review – a swing through Damon Albarn's circus
Denholm Hewlett’s documentary is a snappy scrapbook of behind-the-scenes moments captured at the band’s recording sessions and on a world tour

It’s surprising, given the virtual pop-band conceit, that there wasn’t a full-length Gorillaz film years ago. Maybe this is because Murdoch, 2D, Noodle and Russell have slowly been overwhelmed in the course of the project’s two-decade history by its operational reality – which now verges on, as this film points out, 100 contributors. Making up for the fact that illustrator Jamie Hewlett’s gargoyle-ish ensemble are present only in flashy cutaways, his son Denholm gets to prowl behind the scenes on recording sessions for recent back-to-back albums Humanz and The Now Now, and the world tour that Damon Albarn’s funky omnibus packed in around them.

The downside of family involvement is that everything is strictly sanctioned. Albarn jokes in an after-credits scene about the directorial...

Reject False Icons will primarily center around Gorillaz’s human masterminds,...

Margot Robbie's Tank Girl Reboot Gets Dreamland Director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte
Margot Robbie
Just after learning that Margot Robbie was working on a Tank Girl Reboot, some new details have come to light regarding the project. It's been revealed that Miles Joris-Peyrafitte has been tapped to direct the new version of the cult British comic book. While in the early stages of development, the plan is to have Robbie star in the new movie, which will be the second time that the character has been brought to the big screen.

According to a new report, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte scored the directing gig for Tank Girl after working with Margot Robbie on this year's Dreamland. Things apparently went well enough with that project for Robbie to put him in the driver's seat for this endeavor. Joris-Peyrafitte also directed 2016's As You Are. Robbie is set to produce via her production company LuckyChap, alongside her producing partners Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara. It's stressed that the...

Exclusive: Margot Robbie’s ‘Tank Girl’ Movie Lands Director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte
After working together on Dreamland, Margot Robbie has tapped Miles Joris-Peyrafitte to direct a Tank Girl movie that she'll produce via her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, Collider has exclusively learned. On Monday, Alan Martin, who co-created Tank Girl with Jamie Hewlett back in the late '80s, tweeted that Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, had optioned the rights to his comic, which is a cult favorite. It's my understanding that the project will be developed as a starring vehicle for Robbie, who will produce with her LuckyChap partners Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara. The project, however, is …...

Tank Girl Reboot Is Happening with Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie
It looks like Margot Robbie is getting further into the world of comic book movies. The actress is reportedly developing a Tank Girl Reboot under her LuckyChap banner. Robbie is currently in the middle of some Birds of Prey reshoots and will more than likely officially join the cast of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad at any moment now, so she is keeping very busy. It's been 24 years since the first Tank Girl adaptation hit theaters and it appears Robbie believes that it's time for a new spin.

Lori Petty starred in the first Tank Girl movie in 1995. However, the movie was not a box office success and received mainly negative reviews. Over the years, the movie, much like the original comic, has gained cult status. Tank Girl co-creator Alan Martin was the one to deliver the news about Margot Robbie developing a possible reboot. He had this to say.
