‘Influencers’ Review: Living Too Well Gets the Best Revenge in a Sleek Shudder Sequel
Image
Providing a useful variation on Patricia Highsmith’s globe-trotting sociopath Tom Ripley for the social media era, “Influencer” was a hit for Shudder in 2023. So now director Kurtis David Harder and star Cassandra Naud are back with “Influencers,” a worthy sequel that maintains the original’s upscale gloss and narrative twistiness while adding a sufficient number of new wrinkles.

The indictment of narcissistic online culture is still little more then an excuse for glam intrigue, and our not-infrequently-lethal anti-heroine’s motivations remain just as cloudy as they were last time. But a good time in enviable vacation spots is guaranteed, with ghoulish demises for many principal figures here served up like caviar on sashimi. This tasty if not particularly healthy repast will be served on Shudder later this year.

A prologue finds one young woman slitting her own throat on the patio of a luxe Southeast Asian manse, then crawling...

Image
UK Culture Minister Chris Bryant showed off his French skills and cinema knowledge on Wednesday as he attended a signing ceremony at the British Film Institute for a screen industries cooperation pact between the BFI and France’s National Cinema Centre (Cnc).

Ana de Armas Was Wasted in Her 35% Erotic Thriller That Didn’t Live up to a Similar Kim Basinger Movie
Image
Ana de Armas has been in a lot of spectacular pieces throughout her star-studded career, but there have also been some that just failed to fare well with audiences worldwide. While she is currently riding high on the tides of fame gifted to her by her recently released masterpiece Ballerina, some of her past projects seem to have wasted her true talent.

One of these very flicks includes her 2022 thriller mystery with Ben Affleck that brutally disappointed fans and critics alike: Deep Water. In fact, what makes that piece even more disappointing is the fact that the same filmmaker who tamed that movie also made a similar Kim Basinger flick that the Armas starrer couldn’t live up to: 9 1/2 Weeks.

Deep Water truly wasted Ana de Armas’ talent Ana de Armas. | Credits: Deep Water / Hulu.

Patrick Wilson & Jessica Biel's 9-Year-Old Murder Mystery Movie Moves to Max
Image
The Conjuring and Aquaman star Patrick Wilson's psychological thriller, A kind of Murder, will soon hit Max. The underrated murder mystery movie, which stars The Sinner and Blade: Trinity's Jessica Biel opposite Wilson, debuted in 2016 to less-than-stellar reviews from critics.

Audiences will have another chance to re-experience and re-evaluate A Kind of Murder when it arrives on Max on April 1. Directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Susan Boyd, the film adapts Patricia Highsmith's 1954 novel The Blunderer. Wilson plays Walter Stackhouse, an architect and aspiring writer of short-story crime fiction, fascinated by the recent murder of the spouse of local bookstore owner Marty Kimmel. John Malkovich Starred in a ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ Sequel That Roger Ebert Loved — But Few Even Know Exists
Image
There's something about Tom Ripley that we still find irresistible—the original charismatic career criminal paved the way for the likes of Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. Tom Ripley leaped from the pages of Patricia Highsmith's novels to the silver screen a number of times. Many of those versions went on to become world-renowned pieces of cinema, be it the tragically sensual The Talented Mr. Ripley or the eerily creepy The American Friend, spinning Tom into wildly different directions. One version that didn't get much initial love when first released was the little-seen Ripley's Game, which saw John Malkovichplay Ripley in a performance that Roger Ebertclaimed was the most definitive portrayal of the character that we've seen.

Andrew Scott Passed a Kidney Stone at the 2020 SAG Awards Right as Laura Dern Won, Left the Ceremony in an Ambulance With No One Knowing

Andrew Scott is feeling good at tonight’s SAG Awards. But the same can’t be said for the first time the “Ripley” actor was at the ceremony back in 2020 when he passed a kidney stone on the same night he was nominated for his role in “Fleabag.”

“I was beside Phoebe [Waller-Bridge] and Laura Dern had just won best supporting actress and we were standing up,” Scott told Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the SAG Awards red carpet in Los Angeles. “I don’t know if anyone has ever experienced having a kidney stone before, but it sends you, the pain is so immediate.”

Scott recalled how by the time Dern finished accepting her award for “Marriage Story,” he was already ripping off his tux. “I was in the back [of the room]…writhing around in agony.”

He knew what was going on since he had passed a kidney stone before. Waller-Bridge was...

‘Islands’ Review: A Gripping Tennis Noir That Feels Like ‘Challengers’ by Way of Patricia Highsmith
Image
A sun-baked dream noir that unfolds like a rivetingly seductive mixed doubles match between Patricia Highsmith and the main cast of “Challengers,” Jan-Ole Gerster’s “Islands” confronts its protagonist with a question that most people would probably kill for the chance to answer for themselves: When your life is a permanent vacation, where do you go to escape from it?

We never really discover what Tom (a fantastically dislocated Sam Riley) was running from when he decided to pack up his ambition and serve out the rest of his days as a tennis pro at a chichi resort somewhere just west of Morocco (the Canary Island of Fuerteventura gives an ominous and evocative performance as the film’s unnamed setting), but it’s clear from the start that he’s hit a dead end. The surreal opening scene proves indicative of how our man tends to begin most of his days,...

‘Islands’ Review: Sam Riley Experiences ‘L’Avventura’ of a Lifetime in Soul-Searching European Thriller
Image
German director Jan-Ole Gerster’s mesmerizing, mostly English-language “Islands” opens with a scene that for many would mark “rock bottom” — reason to check oneself into rehab — as Sam Riley’s Tom awakens in a field of sand dunes. He could have been dropped from heaven or belched up from below, but most likely just passed out … again. The camera pans left, and there in the distance is the luxury hotel, big as a cruise ship, where Tom works as a tennis coach for visiting tourists. But mostly, Tom has been living a life of revelry without responsibility, sleeping wherever he can.

Over the course of a lean but revealing film of unexpected existential heft, we witness his wake-up call, as a family of three arrives in Fuerteventura, the largest of the Canary Islands, and gives Tom reason to reassess his life choices. Right from the start, there’s a neo-noir...

Tubi’s ‘A Kill for a Kill’ Remakes a Hitchcock Classic [Review]
Image
The idea of a strangers meeting and agreeing to commit a murder swap of their respective spouses is tantalizing. Patricia Highsmith and Alfred Hitchcock famously explored the idea in Strangers on a Train, which is the clear precursor to Tubi’s latest thriller, A Kill for a Kill, though the new film gender-and race-swaps the characters.

In director Dylan Vox’s film, Destiny (Meyon Jacobs) is a successful author and speaker. As we see her speak to a sold-out auditorium at a women’s empowerment weekend, her talk is intercut with scenes of Toni (Tristan Cunningham) experiencing domestic abuse by her husband Marcus (Tarek Zohdy). Toni has snuck away to attend “Take It Back” because Destiny’s career is centered on her own experience surviving and thriving in the wake of a sexual assault; both women believe in the message about fighting back and reclaiming your power.

Alas Destiny’s...

Andrew Scott Transforms into an Elusive Antihero in Ripley
Image
Even for an actor as skilled as Andrew Scott, playing a character as infamous as poses a serious creative challenge. Since the release of Patricia Highsmith’s now canonical 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the elusive, murderous grifter has become a fixture in . He’s headlined multiple novels and movie adaptations — meaning that almost everyone is acquainted with at least one incarnation of Tom Ripley.

Even so, in writer-director Steven Zaillian’s eight-episode miniseries Ripley, the Irish actor manages to deliver the definitive portrayal of the literary schemer — a sociopath who is an expert at self-preservation, a man seemingly driven by overwhelming desire, envy, and greed. As Scott developed his approach to the tight-lipped character, he says it was vital to forget about Tom’s formidable reputation and focus instead on how such a man might realistically move through the world.

“I think what’s gripping about the show is...

The 2025 Golden Globe upsets we’d love to see
Image
The Golden Globes go down on Sunday. We’ve already shared our expert predictions on who will win the film and TV prizes. And based on thousands of Gold Derby users’ votes, we have a clear picture of the odds in each race. But who among the less likely contenders really deserves to go home with the gold? Here are the big upset victories we’re cheering for this weekend.

Sign UPfor Gold Derby’s free newsletter with latest predictions Colman Domingo, Sing Sing — Best Film Drama Actor

It would be tremendously satisfying to see the magnificent Colman Domingo honored as Best Film Drama Actor for Sing Sing. The pundits rank Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) in front of him, but Domingo’s performance as John “Divine G” Whitfield is almost magical in its emotional complexity. It’s neither showy nor particularly intense,...

They don’t call Netflix the “King of Streaming” for nothing. Despite strike impacts, 2024 was no different and there were plenty of must-watch Netflix shows this year, including big Emmys winners like “Baby Reindeer,” highly-anticipated series like “Squid Game 2” and “3 Body Problem,” as well as a few you might not have heard of yet. Here are the best Netflix Original Series of 2024.

Ripley” (Credit: Netflix) ‘Ripley’

“The Talented Mr. Ripley” is one of the best films of the 1990s, so there was reason to be wary of a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel. But Steven Zaillian’s limited series “Ripley” is so distinct it exists as its own, wonderful take on the story of a lonely,...

Daniel Fienberg’s Top 10

With the entire entertainment industry in a worrisome lull in the aftermath of years interrupted by Covid and the dual guild strikes, much of the conversation about television in 2024 focused on brands and IP, familiar titles presented to viewers with all of the strategy of an inebriated gnu playing darts.

Did we need TV shows ostensibly based on Dune and The Batman but really emulating Game of Thrones and The Sopranos? Maybe!

Did we need a college-set version of Cruel Intentions comparing fraternity and sorority life to fascism? Nah.

Did we need a new version of Matlock built around the twist that it wasn’t really a new version of Matlock at all? Huh. We did!

It turned out, though, that 2024 might be better remembered as the year that put the “intellectual” back in “intellectual property,” as creators went back to the most venerable source material of all: books!

'Playing Him Was Indulgent': Jude Law Names the Role He Wants to Revisit Most
Image
Jude Law reflected on an impressive career of acclaimed films and performances. This is highlighted early on by The Talented Mr. Ripley, where he played the eccentric multimillionaire Dickie Greenleaf.

The Talented Mr. Ripley was a milestone in Jude Law's career, then already established by 1997's Gattaca and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. He appeared in a handful of other films at that point, but he saw his craft as a privilege while playing Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf. Law's performance earned him an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor; this confirmed he had lead actor potential, which led to a Best Actor nomination for Cold Mountain in 2003. In an interview with Collider, Law looked back at an impressive run, asserting The Talented Mr. Ripley is the one film he would love to revisit.

Jude Law Flaunts His Britishness, Calling the Criterion Closet a ‘Cupboard’
Image
“What a thrill to be here in the Criterion … cupboard,” said Jude Law as he cheekily hinted at his British sensibilities within what is actually — quite famously — known as the Criterion Closet. Though America has many faults, this is not one of them and we will forgive Law this grievous correction.

Taking a stop in the closet amidst promoting his period cop thriller “The Order” and the upcoming Disney+ series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” Law took home six films that reflect his broad appreciation for cinema and all it can offer. After pulling off Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Stalker” and discussing its “stillness” alongside another one of the filmmaker’s epic works, “Andrei Rubelev,” the actor selected a classic French film with connections to one of his earliest roles.

“So this holds a very special place in my heart. ‘Purple Noon’ or ‘Plein Soleil,’ which was the first realization of ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley...

4 Movies You’ve Seen Cory Michael Smith In Before ‘Saturday Night’

Cory Michael Smith’s performance as Chevy Chase is one of the many highlights of the new film Saturday Night.

And while some viewers might be discovering the 37-year-old’s talents for the first time, Cory has been demonstrating his impressive abilities for over a decade.

After bursting onto the scene in the acclaimed 2014 HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge, Cory quickly became a favorite of award-winning filmmaker Todd Haynes.

15 Best Movies Like Fifty Shades Of Grey
Image
When the Fifty Shades of Grey movie was released in 2015, it made a splash, but plenty of great movies are comparable to the Fifty Shades series. Based on the books by E.L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey focuses on the central relationship between Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Doran), who push each other emotionally and through physical intimacy. While the most famous parts of the books and movies are the depictions of sex and Bdsm, they're not entirely accurate, and the films have faced criticism for their weak plot and mishandling of sex positivity.

However, films that fall into the romance and eroticism genres don't necessarily have to distance themselves from a compelling story structure. Including elements like the importance of self-discovery, sexual liberation, and even the humor that can be found in intimate moments makes these projects worthwhile. Onscreen depictions of sex have faced great criticism in recent years,...

Dakota Fanning's Popular New Murder Mystery Show Is A Great Reminder To Watch Her 86% Rt Netflix Thriller From This Year
Image
Dakota Fanning's new whodunnit limited series The Perfect Couple is a great reminder to watch her other great Netflix series from earlier this year. Released on Netflix on September 5, 2024, The Perfect Couple has a great cast led by stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning. Created by Jenna Lamia, the 6-part series was directed entirely by Susanne Bier, best known for directing Bird Box, The Undoing, and The First Lady.

The Perfect Couple takes place in an idyllic coastal town on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. The series has been compared to HBO's Big Little Lies due to Kidman's leading role in a murder mystery series based on a popular novel. Despite The Perfect Couple's mixed critical reception, its intriguing premise and ensemble cast was enough to launch the new Netflix series to the number one spot on Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows in the U.

Where to Stream the 2024 Emmy-Winning Limited TV Series Online

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer took home the most awards at last night’s Emmys in the limited or anthology series category, including best show, best actor for creator and writer Richard Gadd, best supporting actress for his co-star Jessica Gunning and best writing in the genre. Those who missed last night’s ceremony — which included heartfelt speeches by Gadd and Gunning — can stream the 76th annual Emmy Awards on demand on Hulu.

Watch the 2024 Emmys on Hulu

Now that the 2024 Emmys are over, TV lovers can binge all the Emmy winners and nominees in the limited series category, which are available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max and other platforms. ‘Ripley’ Director Steve Zaillian Takes Home Emmy For Outstanding Directing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie
Image
Steve Zaillian garnered an Emmy Award on Sunday for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Ripley.

In his speech, Zaillian said he was enamored by the beautiful landscapes that Italy provided, alongside being grateful for his cast and crew. “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward. It was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that,” the director said. “The work is its own reward and I still really appreciate this honor though, and I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley, the actors, Andrew [Scott], Dakota [Fanning], Elliot [Sumner], Johnny [Flynn], Maurizio [Lombardi], and all the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew—all of ’em artists in their own right. I thank them. The Academy, Netflix and my family.”

Ripley, written and directed by Zaillian, is an eight-episode limited series based on...

Pete Hammond’s Final Primetime Emmy Predictions In All Categories
Image
On Sunday we are celebrating the winners of the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the second time this year after January’s strike-delayed 75th Emmys, but we know the results will be, at least in part, quite different (well maybe not for The Bear). So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.

Outstanding Drama Series

With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.

The Winner: SHŌGUN...

Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy odds: Richard Gadd looking strong for penning all episodes of ‘Baby Reindeer’
Image
“Baby Reindeer” has been on an upward trajectory since its quiet premiere in April, and that is reflected in this 2024 Emmy lineup for Best Limited/Movie Writing. Not only is Richard Gadd expected to win here, but he’s also nominated for producing and starring in the Netflix limited series. It’s one of two full showings nominated in this category and is the only autobiographical series represented. The other nominees stem from “Ripley,” “Black Mirror,” “Fargo,” “Fellow Travelers” and “True Detective: Night Country.” With Gadd’s odds looking steady for both Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Actor, will he also pull off a victory in the writing category?

Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:

1. “Baby Reindeer” (Richard Gadd) — 10/3 odds

2. “Ripley” (Steven Zaillian) — 9/2 odds

3. “Fargo” (“The Tragedy of the Commons” by Noah Hawley) — 5/1 odds

4. “True Detective: Night Country” (“Part 6” by Issa López...

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing
Image
Seven years after coming up short on their respective first and second Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing Emmy bids against Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies”), Steven Zaillian and Noah Hawley are involved in a rematch as helmers of the non-continuing programs “Ripley” and “Fargo.” Despite the quality of their new work and their strong Emmys resumes, they are widely expected to once again be bested by a complete first-timer: Weronika Tofilska (“Baby Reindeer”).

Tofilska is joined in this directing lineup’s category newcomer majority by Issa López (“True Detective”), Millicent Shelton (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Gus Van Sant (“Feud”). Counting Zaillian and Hawley, Shelton is the only one in the bunch who has ever earned TV academy recognition for directing a non-limited series, as her very first bid came for “30 Rock” in 2009.

In order to determine whether this is truly Tofilska’s race to lose, let’s take...

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Writing
Image
At this point in his career, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker has a perfect Emmys record, having succeeded on all three producing and two writing nominations he has received for the Netflix series. Soon, however, he could be blocked from going six-for-six by general first-timer Richard Gadd, who is predicted to trounce him in the 2024 race for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Writing.

Along with Ron Nyswaner (“Fellow Travelers”) and Issa López (“True Detective”), Gadd is one of three category newcomers involved in this writing contest. Aside from sole past winner Brooker, the remaining veterans are Noah Hawley (“Fargo”) and Steven Zaillian (“Ripley”), both of whom the “Black Mirror” writer defeated in 2017.

In order to determine whether Gadd truly has this race sewn up, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

14 Seminal American Movies That Are Actually Remakes of Foreign Films
Image
I once thought the European mind couldn’t comprehend Dinner for Schmucks. I now know how wrong I was.

14 ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010)

The 1998 French film Le Dîner de Cons (“dinner of fools”) won a ton of awards and sparked three different Indian adaptations: 2007’s Hindi-language Bheja Fry, 2008’s Kannada-language Mr. Garagasa and 2010’s Malayalam-language April Fool. The original film is based on a 1999 French play of the same name. When it was still a stage production, the title was often translated in English as The Prat’s Dinner or The Cunt’s Dinner.

13 ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009)

The 2009 Wes Craven film is a remake of a 1972 Wes Craven film, which in turn was based on the 1960 Swedish film Jungfrukällan (“the virgin spring”). That film was actually based on a 13th-century Scandinavian ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge,” a real mindfreak about the tragic origin of a local Swedish church.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Limited Series
Image
Heading into the 2024 Primetime Emmys, Netflix is poised to achieve its third Best Limited Series victory in four years. Most prognosticators are convinced that “Baby Reindeer” will easily emulate “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Beef,” but, even if it falters, its streaming platform has some insurance here since its “Ripley” also has a shot at the gold.

This year’s five Best Limited Series contenders boast between 10 and 19 nominations apiece, making for a collective total of 68. In addition to Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry,” the two Netflix programs’ challengers include the respective fourth and fifth iterations of the HBO and FX anthology series “True Detective” and “Fargo.”

In order to determine whether this is truly Netflix’s race to lose, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

What “Shōgun” accomplished Sunday at the Creative Arts Awards was unprecedented, grabbing 14 prizes (including 13 craft honors) and sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba.

FX’s Japanese historical drama eclipsed the 13 wins by “Game of Thrones” and is all but certain to take Best Drama Series and more while setting a new Emmy record at the Primetime ceremony September 15.

“Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance.

In addition, “Shōgun” cast member Nestor Carbonell snagged guest actor honors while, separately, “Shōgun”: The Making of “Shōgun” took short-form nonfiction or reality series.
