Image
Exploring 5 Underrated Haunted House Movies!(Photo Credit –Netflix/Prime Video)

Haunted house horror has never really left us, but some of its best offerings definitely flew under the radar. While The Conjuring and Sinister soaked up the spotlight, several haunting gems quietly delivered top-tier frights in dimly lit hallways and creaking staircases. These films didn’t have blockbuster hype or Blumhouse backing, but they knew how to terrify, unsettle, and leave you checking your rearview mirror on the drive home.

Below are five underappreciated haunted house flicks from this century that deserve your attention. Some are slow burns, others come out swinging, but all have earned their place among the most underrated.

5. Veronica (2017) Streaming On: Netflix Rt Score: 86% Director: Paco Plaza

Plot: Let’s get one thing straight: Veronica was never the scariest movie on Netflix, no matter what the memes told you. But what is it? An atmospheric gut...

Dead and Dangerous: Horror’s Most Terrifying Ghosts
Image
We’re all afraid of ghosts to some extent. Not only do these spectral creatures somehow exist outside the laws of rational reality, they embody the ever present shadow of death slyly hanging over us all. Whether benevolent or benign, ghosts linger in our world for a variety of reasons. Some are driven to complete unfinished business or protect a loved one from across the veil while others simply enjoy harming those of us still among the living.

Now playing in theaters, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence (get tickets now) explores the motivations of an unseen spirit haunting the Payne family in their new suburban home. Told from the phantom’s point of view, we watch as this mysterious being causes chaos in the house while attempting to deliver a horrific message. Though their story is uniquely terrifying, the Payne family are not alone. The horror genre is filled with dangerous...

Breaking Baz: True Brit’s Zygi Kamasa Is On A Scary Mission To Bring Back Britain’s Horror Heritage; Firm Boards Sophie Turner & Kit Harington Pic ‘The Dreadful’
Image
Exclusive: Zygi Kamasa, the veteran film executive who launched True Brit Entertainment 15 months ago, is on a scary mission to bring back Britain’s horror film heritage. Today, he reveals that his company will release period shocker The Dreadful starring Game of Thrones duo Sophie Turner and Kit Harington and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden in the UK.

“I feel very much that I want to go further in trying to encourage the UK industry to make more horror movies because horror still works consistently well in cinemas,” Kamasa insists, citing the success of last year’s occult horror Longlegs.

Sophie Turner, Kit Harington

But Longlegs, and many other recent horror movies, were American made.

“If we’re going to do horror in this country, go back. I mean we were dominating horror in the Sixties and Seventies, the Hammer horror and all that.

Brandy's A24 Thriller 'The Front Room' Finds Streaming Success on Max
Image
After failing to meet box office expectations, Max and Sam Eggers' directorial debut, The Front Room, has become a streaming success. When the psychological horror thriller landed in theaters in September, it was projected to gross $5 million but fell a bit flat, bringing in barely its supposed budget, $3.2 million; it also became A24's lowest-rated movie of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes. The critically divisive film (which currently holds a 42% rating on the review site) now sits at the number two spot in Max's most streamed movies, topped only by Clint Eastwood's Juror #2.

Based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood as Belinda, a pregnant woman whose life is thrown into disarray when her aging mother-in-law, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), moves in with Belinda and her husband. Solange's arrival creates tension; her eccentric behavior and weird demands push Belinda beyond her limits.

The Front Room Review: Kathryn Hunter's Delightfully Unhinged Genius Is Overshadowed By Horror's Weakest Elements
Image
A24 has become largely known for their work in the indie horror sphere, with everything from the psychological chiller Hereditary to the more directly supernatural Talk to Me. The studio has also made a reputation for frequently collaborating with certain filmmakers, including Robert Eggers on his first two projects, The Witch and The Lighthouse. Now, the studio has sought to expand that to Eggers' filmmaking siblings, Max and Sam Eggers, with the absurdist psychological horror The Front Room, which unfortunately doesn't make the same impact.

The Front Room is a psychological horror film directed by the Eggers Brothers. Set in a single location, it revolves around a young, pregnant woman caring for her ailing grandmother, whose secrets and dementia create a tense and eerie atmosphere. The film stars Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter, and explores themes of family, memory, and the supernatural.

The Front Room starring Brandy will be released on Max in January 2025
Image
One of A24's new horror releases this year is scheduled to make its official streaming debut this January. It's the psychological horror film The Front Room starring Brandy Norwood, and it's coming to Max early next month. It will debut on the popular streaming platform on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025. Then, the next day, it will make its linear debut on HBO at 8:00 p.m. Et.

Like many other horror movies, The Front Room is based on another piece of work. It's based on Susan Hill's short story of the same name. Creative brother duo, Max and Sam Eggers, wrote the script for the film as well as directed it.

A24 released The Front Room in theaters back in September, and sadly, the overall critic and audience response wasn't too great. What's even worse is that it didn't do well at the box office. The horror flick generated very low box office numbers,...

A24's New Horror Movie Continues A Disastrous 26-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
A24s successful Rotten Tomatoes streak ended with The Front Room, which, at the same time, continues a disastrous 26-year streak for its lead actress. Thanks to its variety of movies, A24 has become one of the leading studios in the horror genre, bringing movies like Hereditary, The Witch, Talk to Me, and more. Thanks to these and more hits, A24 is now synonymous with high quality in horror movies, but its great Rotten Tomatoes streak has now ended with its most recent horror movie, The Front Room.

Directed by Max and Sam Eggers and based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room follows Belinda (Brandy), a pregnant anthropology professor grieving from the loss of her firstborn son. When her husbands father dies, she and Norman (Andrew Burnap) are forced to take his mother, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), in. Solange soon begins to act aggressively against Belinda,...

The Front Room Ending Explained
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Front Room

The ending of A24's The Front Room is a dark but powerful victory for Brandy's Belinda. The directorial debut of the Eggers Brothers and based on a short story by the acclaimed author Susan Hill, The Front Room is a character drama focused on a pregnant woman and her husband having to take in a hateful old woman. The tense A24 movie's central drama is between Belinda and her husband's step-mother Solange. After she moves in with them, their relationship becomes more toxic and confrontational.

Forced to accept Solange's presence in their house to earn a windfall inheritance, Belinda and her husband Norman do their best to make peace with the elderly woman. However, Solange's attempts both subtle and overt to take over Belinda's role as the maternal figure in her own life pushes the latter until Solange dies late in the third act.

Review: Meet The Mother-In-Law of Your Nightmares in The Front Room
Image
What in the name of the father, son, and holy oh-my-lord? The Front Room is an audacious debut for brothers Max and Sam Eggers, spiking parent-in-law troubles with a pungent brand of psychological horror. Its evils are geriatric but no less despicable than eerie elderly examples like The Visit or The Taking of Deborah Logan. Religious devotion, bigoted intolerance, and stinky incontinence color this battle of the generations (as dictated by Susan Hill’s original short story). The Eggers duo tell a story rooted in familiar trappings as characters excuse red flags for financial compensation, and while that might seem ordinary, The Front Room boasts a secret weapon — one of the nastiest grannies on screen in a long while.

Musical superstar Brandy Norwood stars as Belinda, a Black anthropology professor with a baby bump. Her caucasian husband Norman (Andrew Burnap) works for a legal firm but is plenty of rungs down on the hierarchical ladder.

The Front Room Review | Hard to Watch A24 Nightmare About Awful In-Laws
Image
In-laws, am I right? Just when you thought you had it tough, you take in the outrageous predicament laid out in The Front Room, and you're left wondering if maybe the hand you're dealt ain't all that bad. A24's new psychological thriller ultimately throws a lot at the wall, and some of it sticks well: the racially charged story tropes, the chills reminiscent of classic feminine horror like Rosemary's Baby, and, as promised in the promotional campaign, Brandy's glorious return to horror.

Yes, it's been 25 years since the famed singer and actress' character survived the cunning sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, and as Brandy recently told us, she may even be back for its own legacy sequel. In the meantime, from writer-directors Max and Sam Eggers, working off a chilling short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room offers enough edgy...

The Front Room Review: Prepare Yourself For This Year's Grossest Horror Comedy
Image
Relatives are generally seen as just another fact of life, people who can either be a comfort, an annoyance, or a burden. Given the multi-faceted nature of people, it's typically some mixture of all three. Yet their burdens can quickly become quirks that get raised to the level of family mythology, a series of events, stories and inside jokes that only you and those related to you can chuckle at. Stuff like "Oops, Aunt Lydia stunk up the bathroom again" turns the chore-esque aspect of having relatives into something more manageable, even charming. Because, deep down, there's love there, and being human is not always an easy or smooth experience. But what if there wasn't any love? What if there was only hate, and not just run of the mill hate, but deep-seated, generational, bigoted hate?

That's just one of the themes explored by "The Front Room," the first feature...

'The Front Room' Review - Brandy and Kathryn Hunter Are Forces of (Un)Nature in Absurd A24 Horror
Image
New parenthood is difficult enough in the absence of compounding issues. Add to it job difficulties, money problems, and familial baggage, and suddenly one of life's most beautiful potential experiences becomes overwhelmingly tough. In The Front Room, written and directed by Max Eggers and Sam Eggers from a short story by author Susan Hill, an expectant family does deal with these stressors, sure, but they have another major challenge to overcome. Enter a racist, extraordinarily religious mother-in-law who claims to be possessed by the Holy Spirit, and who can't be trusted around the family's youngest. The film is a psychological horror entry in its own right, showcasing a constant parade of challenges that bring the family to the brink of their sanity, but it's also a dark comedy that highlights familial ills so absurd it would threaten even the most ironclad relationships. The Front Room boasts strong character work alongside some intriguing tonal surprises,...

‘The Front Room’ Review: Brandy Battles Urine and Feces in A24’s Wildest Bad Idea Yet
Image
When finding your angle on a film review, it can be helpful to use dialogue as inspiration. From brothers Max and Sam Eggers, A24’s “The Front Room” is a wildly inappropriate horror effort that offers several good options in this regard.

“Why can’t I Die?!”

“I’m a racist baby, goo-goo, gah-gah.”

“Stop crying for yourself.”

“Just…let me know who wins.”

“Are you Kidding me?”

Take your pick of those lines or combine a couple. Whatever you come up with won’t get close to the sheer ridiculousness in this bonkers co-directorial debut. Starring Brandy as the very pregnant Belinda, the Eggers twins’ first feature is a melodramatic fairytale about end-of-life caregiving, generational racism, and hating the literal shit out of your mother-in-law. This feces-centric film is better off not compared to the work of the filmmakers’ older brother, Robert Eggers; although, there are specks of surreal...

Interview: Sam & Max Eggers Discuss the Source Material, Cast, and Filming of The Front Room
Image
Coming to theaters on September 6th from A24, I had a chance to talk with Sam & Max Eggers about The Front Room, their new horror film that stars Brandy, Andrew Burnap, and Kathryn Hunter. From their personal connection to the source material, to working with the cast, and balancing humor and horror, read on to learn more about their experience making The Front Room:

The Front Room is based on the short story from Susan Hill. What about the story resonated with you two so much that you wanted to write and direct the film?

Max Eggers: We've been fans of Susan Hill forever. The Woman in Black is just incredible. We were brought the story by our producers, and it's a really great short story that was so resonant to us. When we read it, we had taken care of our grandfather and [his health had] declined, so we knew exactly...

The Eggers Brothers Tease The Front Room's Delightfully Disturbing Horror
Image
Loosely based on the short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood and Andrew Burnap as Belinda and Norman, a pregnant couple who are forced to take in Norman's eccentric mother, Solange (Kathryn Hunter). Already stressed by her pregnancy and losing her job, Belinda immediately finds herself in conflict with Solange. While seemingly old and feeble, she's also duplicitous, conniving, racist, and potentially outright psychotic. And you thought your mother-in-law was a hassle.

The Eggers Brothers, younger siblings of The Witch and The Lighthouse helmer Robert Eggers, make their directorial debut with The Front Room and like their brother's films, calling it merely a horror film is a reductive assessment. Thanks to an incredible stand-out performance from Hunter, The Front Room is oftentimes laugh-out-loud funny, even when the characters are pushed to their physical and emotional limits. With its eccentric tone, nuanced performances, and wickedly subversive sensibilities,...

Brandy and Kathryn Hunter on Their Twisted Face-Off in 'The Front Room'
Image
Brandy sparked a sharp buzz when the singer and songwriter teased the trailer for A24s upcoming horror movie, The Front Room on her Instagram account a few weeks back. The psychological thriller film is the directorial debut of the Eggers Brothers and is based on the 2016 short story of the same title by Susan Hill. The short story is often praised for its precision and compelling narrative that depicts the strain of family dynamics and the introduction of a disturbing outsider that intensifies as the story progresses. Delving into psychological horror rather than relying on gore or shock value, the film's subtle approach to horror makes the story both haunting and thought-provoking as Brandy stars alongside Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff.

The Front Room Trailer: Brandy Norwood Faces The Mother-In-Law From Hell In New A24 Horror
Image
"Being cooped up with a newborn and a mother-in-law can drive anyone crazy." So says Brandy Norwood's embattled mother-to-be Belinda in the nerve-fraying new trailer for A24's The Front Room — and honestly, on present evidence that may well be an understatement. Hailing from co-writer/director duo Max and Sam Eggers — brothers of Nosferatu filmmaker Robert Eggers — the siblings' psychological horror, based on Susan Hill's short story of the same name, sees a young, newly pregnant couple's (Norwood and Andrew Burnap) lives upended when the husband's stepmother (Kathryn Hunter) comes to stay. Check out the unsettling first trailer for the movie below;

What can we say? The Front Room's got it all. Dead fathers, profane religious imagery, Hunter on even creepier form than she was in The Tragedy Of Macbeth, and a power struggle for the soul of a newborn child — it looks like twins Max and...

Brandy Norwood Battles the Mother-in-Law From Hell in A24’s ‘The Front Room’ Trailer
Image
Brandy Norwood has a tougher mother-in-law situation than most expectant parents in the first trailer for A24’s psychological horror movie The Front Room.

The feature from directors Max Eggers and Sam Eggers is set to hit theaters Sept. 6. Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff and Kathryn Hunter also star in the film that focuses on a couple with a baby on the way whose lives change dramatically after they allow the husband’s stepmother (Hunter) to stay in their home.

“This is my house,” Norwood says defiantly in the trailer. She quips, “Being cooped up with a newborn and a mother-in-law can drive anyone crazy.”

At one point in the trailer, Burnap explains, “She thinks that the Holy Spirit possesses her and gives her power.”

Later, Burnap tells Norwood, “She says that you hit her.” This leads Norwood to exclaim, “She wants you to think it was me.”

‘The Front Room’ Trailer: Brandy Hides from an Evil Mother-in-Law in Max and Sam Eggers’ A24 Debut
Image
Few last names have loomed larger over the indie horror space over the past decade than Eggers. After bursting onto the scene (and launching both Anya-Taylor Joy’s career and the term “elevated horror”) with “The Witch” in 2015, Robert Eggers cemented his status as one of his generation’s most distinct auteurs with “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman.” But he’s not the only Eggers looking to make a stamp on the horror genre.

The upcoming A24 film “The Front Room” is written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers, Robert’s brothers and frequent collaborators. While both men are making their feature directorial debuts on the project, Max co-wrote “The Lighthouse,” and Sam co-wrote Harry Mavromichalis’ 2018 film “Olympia.” Both men have also performed a variety of crew jobs on Robert Eggers’ other projects.

“The Front Room” stars Brandy Norwood as a woman whose life takes a dark turn when...

Brandy Norwood leads horror film The Front Room, releasing this September
Image
Many people know Brandy Norwood for being a Grammy Award-winning musician, while others might also know her from her acting career, specifically her starring role as Moesha Mitchell in the television sitcom Moesha. She has starred in many other projects over her acting career, but one of the roles she's best known for was her role as Karla Wilson in the '90s slasher I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

After seeing her in that film, people wanted to see her take on more roles in horror movies. Well, it's finally happening. Brandy is set to star in a new horror flick from A24 titled The Front Room, and we're so excited to share everything we know so far about it.

We first learned about this movie back in August 2022 when it was reported that A24 would be joining forces with talented filmmakers and brothers Max and Sam Eggers...

The Woman In Black Ending & What Jennet Really Wants Explained
Image
What really happened to Arthur and Joseph reveals The Woman in Black's chilling ending twists and ethereal resolution. Jennet Humfrye's vengeance transcends mere reunification with her son, driving her to torment and punishment. The Woman in Black's haunting atmosphere, reminiscent of Hammer horror films, delivers a Victorian ghost story with unexpected twists.

The Woman in Black ending is mysterious and what happened to Jennet Humfrye isn't thoroughly explained. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 gothic ghost story of the same name, The Woman in Black is a 2012 film set in 20th-century England. The movie creates an atmosphere reminiscent of Hammer's gothic horror films through both writing and cinematography for a chilling Victorian ghost story. The Woman in Black follows Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as a widowed lawyer who travels to the remote village of Illmarsh to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased client.

However, when Arthur arrives,...

Five Genuinely Scary PG-13 Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
The PG-13 rating, at least for horror, often induces derision or skepticism, like an instant shackle on the horror. A PG-13 rating broadcasts straightaway not to expect any excessive gore, violence, or any of the explicit fun stuff that tends to be horror’s bread and butter. But those things aren’t synonymous with horror’s true aim, which is to scare you silly.

Luckily, PG-13 horror has proven time and time again throughout the decades that it’s more than capable of inducing chills. Especially when it comes to the supernatural.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to PG-13 horror movies that bring the terror through ghostly jump scares, ominous atmosphere, and more. That the PG-13 rating means they also double as potential gateway horror for the budding monster kid is a bonus.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

40 Years of The Woman In Black: Haunting the Page, Stage, and Screen
Image
The novel The Woman in Black recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Released in Fall of 1983, The Woman in Black has become a much loved and much reimagined story. During its history it has been adapted into a TV movie, Hollywood film – with sequel, radio play and theatre production – which was the 2nd longest run of any play in London’s history. The apparition of The Woman in Black has taken many impressive shapes. What’s more impressive is that: the author, Susan Hill had never had a ghost story published prior to this one; the theatre adaptation was penned by a soap opera writer; and the first performance took place in a canteen - possibly a pub - in the northern coastal town of Scarborough (which is some 20 miles away from Dracula’s Whitby).

The story itself revolves around a young solicitor, Arthur Kipps who is sent to a very...

James’ Favorites of 2023
Image
It’s been another blockbuster year for horror, but then again it always feels like that. Superhero fatigue has set in and major franchise pictures haven’t returned as expected, but horror, as ever, always seems to reach new heights. The news in 2023 may have been a load of gout, but the horror has been pure gold.

So, without further ado, here is a list of my top 10 of 2023.

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop

Arrow Films, Vinegar Syndrome and others who have perfected the art of producing feature-length behind the scenes documentaries really have their work cut out for them thanks to RoboDoc. RoboDoc has broken the mould by creating an in-depth documentary that takes you through the entire film scene-by-scene. RoboDoc combines a retrospective documentary, director’s commentary and behind the scenes features into one glorious 4-part series.
