1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.

In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.

The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).

Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

Adapted from Larry McMurtry’s bittersweet 1966 novel of the same name by McMurtry and director Peter Bogdanovich, The Last Picture Show delineates the quiet, desperate lives of the citizens of Anarene, Texas, from November 1951 to October 1952. The film is a pure Janus-headed product of the New Hollywood. Bogdanovich pours the new wine of sexual frankness available to filmmakers after the inauguration of the MPAA ratings system into old bottles borrowed from the cellars of classic Hollywood cinema, namely those older films’ expressive visual grammar and obliquely suggestive dialogue.

CBS’ Blue Bloods this week hosted an on-set reunion between the original Magnum, P.I.‘s Tom Selleck and former co-star Larry Manetti.

Manetti played Orville “Rick” Wright to Selleck’s titular sleuth for all eight seasons of the 1980s crime drama. (The series’ other two leads, John Hillerman, who played Higgins, and Roger E. Mosley, who played Theodore “Tc” Calvin, passed away in 2017 and 2022, respectively.)

Tom Selleck and his Magnum P.I. co-star Larry Manetti will work together again during an upcoming episode of Blue Bloods on CBS.

Selleck's Blue Bloods co-star Donnie Wahlberg shared a photo on Instagram this week, revealing that Manetti is joining the series as a guest star.

"It's a mini Magnum Pi reunion on the set of #BlueBloods this week, with guest star Larry Manetti and Tom Selleck — together again," the actor captioned the above photo.

"Wishing the late greats Roger E. Mosley & John Hillerman could be here, too."

The popular photo also featured Bridget Moynahan, Andrew Terraciano, Will Estes, and Vanessa Ray.

Manetti starred on Magnum P.I. opposite Selleck from 1980 to 1989.

Entertainment Tonight shared details of the highly-anticipated episode.

"A retired cop holds a young man at gunpoint who sold his grandson fentanyl laced pills," the outlet teased this week.

Original Magnum P.I. co-stars Tom Selleck and Larry Manetti are reuniting for an upcoming episode of Selleck’s CBS drama series Blue Bloods. This is the first time the duo will act together onscreen since Magnum P.I. concluded its run in 1988.

Blue Bloods’ Donnie Wahlberg shared the news on social media, writing: “It’s a mini Magnum Pi reunion, on the set of #BlueBloods this week, with guest star Larry Manetti & Tom Selleck — together again. Wishing the late greats Roger E Mosley & John Hillerman could be here, too.”

A little caper is always fun and Higgins let everyone play along.

Magnum P.I. Season 4 Episode 3 was a showcase for the many sides of Higgins.

We got a glimpse of what Mi-6 has in mind for Higgins as she seduced a man at a hotel bar then knocked him out with a syringe, leaving him for other agents to pick up.

Juliet is much too skilled just to be used as part of a honey trap. As she showed when she took out those Kenyan bandits on Magnum P.I. Season 4 Episode 1, she can more than hold her own in a fight as well.

Her handler Eve pretty much proclaimed that Higgins wasn't getting out from under Mi-6's thumb any time soon.

That's great because Juliet deserves more than the penny-ante cases she ends up taking on with Magnum.

No, now they mainly help out the downtrodden and the wrongly accused.

John Schlesinger’s adaptation of Nathanael West’s novel is one of the best ‘Hollywood on Hollywood’ pictures ever, even if it soaks everything about The Golden Age of Tinseltown in an acid bath of cynicism. A TV prequel to the 1970s-era film “Chinatown” is in development at Netflix, with David Fincher and Robert Towne, who wrote the original film, on board to write the pilot, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

The potential series will see Jake Gittes during his time as private investigator before the events of the film. Gittes was played by Jack Nicholson in the original movie.

Netflix declined to comment.

The 1974 film was directed by Roman Polanski, and also starred Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Perry Lopez and John Hillerman. Towne won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. A sequel, “The Two Jakes,” was released in 1990 with Nicholson and Towne returning.

Fincher has extensive experience with Netflix. He directed the first two episodes of “House of Cards” and was an executive producer.

Laemmle’s Royal Theatre in Los Angeles will be presenting the 45th anniversary screening of Roman Polanski’s 1974 film Chinatown which itself takes place in the City of Angels. The film will be screened on Thursday, June 27th, 2019 at 7:00 pm. Starring Jack Nicholson in one of the many classics that he made during that phenomenal decade, the film co-stars Faye Dunaway, John Houston, John Hillerman, Diane Ladd, and Bruce Glover. The film runs 131 minutes.

Magnum, P.I., was one of the shows I used to watch with my grandmother (along with The Love Boat and Fantasy Island), and, as you can imagine, is one I hold extremely sacred.

Even if you weren't around when the original Magnum, P.I. aired in the 80s, you no doubt are familiar with the iconic role played by super hunky Tom Selleck. The sexy mustache and his infamous Hawaiian shirts will forever be remembered in the annals of classic TV.

The special “In Memoriam” segment on the 2018 Emmy Awards ceremony will be especially tearful this year. Beloved television legends Steven Bochco, Anthony Bourdain, Robert Guillaume, Monty Hall, John Mahoney, Jim Nabors, Charlotte Rae, Burt Reynolds, Neil Simon and Craig Zadan will certainly be just a few people honored with in a musical tribute.

Let’s take a look back at these TV icons as well as over 50 others who have died since mid-September last year. Many will be included in the memoriam for the live Emmys ceremony hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost for NBC on September 17.

CBS’s Magnum P.I. reboot stars Jay Hernandez in the role made famous byTom Selleck in the 80’s. Asked how much of the new Magnum’s cultural background will influence the show and if there are any Latinx writers in the writers’ room, Ep Eric Guggenheim said they are “not denying the fact he’s Latino. It’s something we plan to acknowledge throughout the season.”

“Are there any Latinx writers in the room?” the TV critic persisted. Ep Peter Lenkov finally acknowledged there were not, adding, “Not for any reason other than, when staffing a show, it’s incredibly hard to find writers.”

“We have a very diverse writers’ room” he said. TV critics later learned that, of the show’s seven writers, four are men, three women.

As reported earlier, CBS has ordered a reboot of the 1980s action drama. The original starred Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator who lives in Hawaii. The cast also included John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley, and Larry Manetti. The show ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988.

The pilot of CBS’ Magnum P.I. reboot screened at Comic-Con during the show’s panel Thursday, and the Justin Lin-directed episode wastes no time in bringing the bonkers action sequence.

The opening scene to the pilot begins with the titular private investigator (not private eye) — jumping out of a spaceship and into North Korea to rescue a family in the jungle. Yes, I said space. It is a ridiculously awesome, cinematic-grade action sequence — but it is a bit of a fantasy sequence that sets the tone for this reboot.

The show honors the original series starring Tom Selleck (will get to him later) and has nods that fans will love, including Dobermans Zeus and Apollo, the Ferrari, and the odd-couple relationship between Thomas Magnum and Higgins (we’ll get to her later).

Penny Dreadful alumna Perdita Weeks has signed on to play Juliet Higgins in the buzzy pilot, our sister site Variety is reporting. Weeks’ Juliet is the property manager of the sprawling Hawaiian estate where detective Thomas Magnum provides security and lives in the guest house. Tom Selleck's Emmy-winning "Magnum, P.I." co-star, John Hillerman, died from heart disease ... TMZ has learned. John Hillerman, who won an Emmy for playing Tom Selleck’s foil Jonathan Higgins on the long-running CBS hit Magnum, P.I., died today at his Houston home. He was 84.
