The Emotional Devastation of 1978’s ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Jack Cutmore-Scott in Deception (2018)
Tufts of Hair and Skin.

Trace and I are firmly in the thick of Doppelgängers and Deception month. We began with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (listen) before heading into the world of sex work with Daniel Goldhaber’s Cam (listen). Now we’re up to Philip Kaufman‘s 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers Aka one of the greatest horror remakes of all time.

In the film, Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) initially discounts Elizabeth (Brooke Adams)’s observations that her partner Geoffrey (Art Hindle) is behaving oddly. As identical reports surface, however, Matthew recruits his writer friend Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum), Jack’s wife Nancy (Veronica Cartwright) and therapist Dr. Kibner (Leonard Nimoy) to investigate. They quickly discover that a nefarious plot is in motion to replace people with emotionless automatons…and anyone who falls asleep is at risk.

Five Unsettling Alien Invasion Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
The very concept of aliens plays on our collective fear of the unknown; there’s no telling what horrors await in the cosmos. While there are plenty of horror movies that explore that horror by sending humans into space, alien invasion horror movies induce paranoia, tension, and fear by bringing extraterrestrials earthbound to invade in various unsettling ways.

It’s home invasion horror on a massive scale, with humanity often facing apocalyptic doom against the threat of intelligent life from beyond our galaxy.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to alien invasion horror movies that unsettle for the eerie, inhuman invaders and their even creepier means of assimilation.

As always, here’s where you can watch them this week.

10 Best Chuck Norris Action Movies From The 1980s
Image
Chuck Norris has carved out a reputation for starring in some of the best action movies of all time, particularly his groundbreaking work in the 1980s that put gritty action thrillers into the mainstream. Perhaps he is known predominantly now as a folktale legend told through jokes and memes about his physical prowess and athletic abilities, but these all started with a genuine origin. Like many martial arts film stars, Norris' fighting ability came first before his venture into Hollywood, with a martial arts background that saw him secure several championships and develop skills in multiple disciplines.

Some of Norris' best films show him as a one-man army fighting against forces of evil, but he is just as comfortable in an ensemble cast that band together to get the job done. His role as the iconic J.J. McQuade in Lone Wolf McQuade showcases the blend of individual bravado and exceptional combat skills,...

Donald Sutherland's 46-Year-Old Horror Remake Lands on Prime Video Next Month
Image
The movie with arguably one of the most memorable final shots of any film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, will debut on Prime Video on Nov. 1. The final scene, featuring the late Donald Sutherland, has gone on to become a frequently-used meme, especially during the spooky season.

The 1978 film, also starring Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, and Brooke Adams, was actually a remake of the 1956 film of the same name. Both the remake and the 1978 film version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers were based on the 1955 novel, The Body Snatchers, written by Jack Finney.

While the 1956 version is considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi horror films ever, the remake might be even better. Directed by Phillip Kaufman, who wrote Raiders of the Lost Arc (1981), the film has a Certified Fresh 93% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82% audience score.

The 17 Greatest Horror Movie Remakes Ever
Image
You used to hear the refrain from horror film fanatics with a lot more frequency – the original was so much scarier.

And while this is still true to some degree (the films of John Carpenter have been remade with an oddly uniform lousiness), there are still plenty of horror films that have been remade well. Sometimes the remakes are just as good as the original. In rare cases, it even surpasses the original.

Here is our definitive list of the very best horror remakes ever.

(United Artists) “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978)

Don Siegel’s 1956 classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is based on Jack Finney’s story “The Body Snatchers,” which was serialized in Collier’s in 1954 and published as a novel shortly after, has been remade several times over the years. But the very best iteration is still the 1978 version, the first since Siegel’s, from director Philip Kaufman and writer W.D. Richter.

Ridley Scott's Alien May Have Been Inspired by a Panned Canadian Film
Image
The filmography of Canadian cult legend David Cronenberg has a lot in common with the Alien franchise: the goo, the gore, the hybridization of sci-fi and horror, and the hijacking of the human body for strange new purposes. But Cronenberg, the body horror king, has always claimed that Alien writer Dan O'Bannon owes a debt to his 1975 film Shivers, about a parasite with a bizarre reproductive strategy. That's right: The Xenomorph could secretly be from Canada.

The director of Shivers is an iconoclastic artist whose work invites few comparisons, except with younger generations of filmmakers who bear his influence. The word "Cronenbergian" has been coined to describe art that interweaves flesh and technology as the filmmaker does in Videodrome, his cult classic about a televised virus, and eXistenz, about a video game with a biological interface. His heroes encounter alien forces that alter their bodies and warp their minds, and...

David Cronenberg’s ‘The Brood’ is a Bloody End to a Troubled Marriage [The Lady Killers Podcast]
David Cronenberg
“You got involved with a woman who fell in love with you for your sanity and hoped it would rub off.”

What would the horror version of Kramer vs. Kramer look like? What about a murderous version of Marriage Story? While horror fans might enjoy throwing in gory dismemberment or supernatural chaos to these extremely human stories, would we be able to stomach the devastating mix of physical and emotional pain? Divorce is already hard enough! But that’s just what David Cronenberg gives us with The Brood. This 1979 film is a shocking and powerful story about the death of a marriage and the extensive collateral damage that lies in its wake.

Nola (Samantha Eggar) is a young mother taking time for herself. In order to process childhood trauma, she’s enrolled in extensive treatment at the Somafree Institure, a therapeutic retreat run by the illustrious Dr. Raglan (Oliver Reed). His patented modality,...

Horror can always be counted on to transform the most innocuous concepts into unsettling nightmares, especially when it comes to exploring themes of parenthood.

In horror, children frequently veer straight into creepy territory with unsettling statements and empty stares. This week’s streaming picks highlight some of horror’s most unnerving children.

Frankenstein (1994)
‘Black Christmas’ – Revisit the Original Holiday Classic on Screambox Right Now!
Frankenstein (1994)
Christmas is coming and we’re painting the snow red on Screambox.

There are an absurd amount of presents under our tree, including the “Frankenstein”-inspired Santastein, the nasty Secret Santa hailing from the director of Jason Goes to Hell, and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

But we also have our fair share of holiday classics, including Rare Exports, Christmas Evil, Day of the Beast, Deep Red, and even Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.

However, the star at the top of the tree is Bob Clark‘s slasher masterpiece Black Christmas, which is now streaming on Screambox courtesy of Shout! Factory.

In Black Christmas…

“The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sigma prepare for the festive season, a stranger begins to stalk the house. A series of obscene phone calls start to plague the sorority...

Five Sci-Fi Horror Movies Featuring Aliens to Stream This Week
Image
Among the new releases this week is Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, a home invasion with an alien twist starring Kaitlyn Dever and debuting on Hulu on September 22. With it comes the realization of how scarcely populated the sci-fi horror subgenre gets regarding the iconic Gray aliens. These quintessential aliens have emerged recently in the news, but their cinematic counterparts are rarer. That’s a shame, considering how effectively they induce terror, as evidenced by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs (on Max).

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the quieter alien invasions. These sci-fi horror films revolve around the Grays and similar extraterrestrials that are more content to invade and toy with their prey quietly.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Best Chuck Norris Films – the best of the bearded one
Image
Starting his career in an uncredited role in as a henchman in the Dean Martin/ Matt Helm movie The Wrecking Crew, Chuck Norris really burst onto the scene fighting Bruce Lee in a Roman Coliseum in The Way of the Dragon. Since then, Chuck Norris has had a career filled with action scenes, loud guns, and roundhouse kicks. He was a mainstay of 1980s action films and was even brought in as a sort of savior for the others in The Expendables 2. While he’s mostly retired now, everyone still knows who he is, and Chuck Norris jokes have honored him for years. After a solid deep dive of the man’s movies, here are what we consider the best Chuck Norris movies:

The Octagon (1980)

Starting off a decade of plenty for Mr. Norris, The Octagon is one of those films that feels very much like he owns it.

David Cronenberg
The Brood - Jennie Kermode - 18362
David Cronenberg
The theory that what is inside the mind can become manifest on the body has been kicked around in various forms since ancient times and its influence is still felt today, sometimes with serious consequences, as when politicians persuade themselves that disabilities can be willed away. In the Sixties and Seventies it was particularly prominent amongst self-help gurus, and David Cronenberg’s messy but influential horror film exposes and exploits this, taking it to an extreme. Though not entirely successful as a piece of entertainment, it represents an important stage in the development of body horror cinema. It’s also of interest to students of the director’s work, as its satire has a very personal aspect related to the breakdown of his first marriage and the custody battle which then ensued.

In the film, we see Cronenberg’s alter-ego Frank (Art Hindle) trying to keep his five-year-old daughter Candice (Cindy Hinds) from spending court-appointed.

‘Trader’ Review
Image
Stars: Kimberly-Sue Murray | Features the voices of: Shaun Benson, Stephen Bogaert, Ellen Dubin, Samora Smallwood, Art Hindle | Written and Directed by Corey Stanton

From the opening shot panning downstairs into a basement apartment, writer/director Corey Stanton establishes the sole location his film occurs within. A phone call is taking place, as a lone woman (Kimberly-Sue Murray) enacts fraud to access a man’s credit card details and prescription information. She uses this to stock up on pills and buy expensive products, selling the latter to fund her passion; stock market trading.

Following his 2018 feature-debut, Robbery, Stanton crafts a chamber piece about one character’s desire to rise above the rock-bottom situation and location she wishes to leave behind. As the story stays in the basement setting, the film must find ways to make the inescapable situation appear cinematic. This is achieved by going inward, terrifically visualising the inner workings...

Image
Los Angeles-based Premiere Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide sales rights to romance murder mystery “Nightalk,” directed by Canadian filmmaker Donald Shebib. The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, stars Ashley Bryant and Al Mukadam.

The steamy thriller follows a female cop (Bryant), who goes undercover on a phone-sex app to solve a murder investigation, as she discovers her own sexuality while losing herself to the erotic fantasies of the suspected killer and risks becoming the killer’s next victim. Ted Hallett, Emily Andrews and Art Hindle round out the key cast.

Shebib and Claude Harz wrote the original screenplay, which was produced by Evdon Productions and Emily Andrews for Filmcoop.

Shebib is considered a key figure in the development of English Canadian cinema, largely due to his most prominent film “Goin’ Down the Road,” which premiered at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 1971. Other works include the heist crime-drama “Between Friends,...

Hello, dear readers! One of this writer’s favorite films of all time, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is getting the 4K treatment from Kino Lorber this Tuesday, and Arrow Video is resurrecting both The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge on Blu-ray as well (this is also very exciting news in my world). Arrow is also re-releasing a handful of other titles—The Cat O’ Nine Tails, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and C.H.U.D.—and the first season of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery is headed to Blu-ray as well.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers ’78 4K

This first remake of the 1956 sci-fi classic retains many of the original’s story points, clears up the bio minutiae for literal-minded viewers and adds a fascinating social commentary about ’70s lifestyles that’s almost as depressing as the idea of being ‘replaced’ by an alien simulacrum. Philip Kaufman’s first big hit is a worthy picture that’s maintained its high reputation … and it’s even scarier in today’s socio-political climate.

‘Beast Within’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Colm Feore, Steven Morana, Holly Deveaux, Ari Millen, Art Hindle, Bobbie Phillips, Melissa D’Agostino, Marco Timpano, Mark Andrade, Nicole Stamp, Jon Cor, Supinder Wraich | Written by Matthew Campagna, Rudy Jahchan | Directed by Chris Green, Steven Morana

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Beast Within from its US digital release last year]

Essentially a horror version of Knives Out (or the many Agatha Christie films which inspired it) and filmed on a low-budget, of course, Beast Within is a whodunit creature feature which stars Steven Morana (Whiskey Business) and Holly Deveaux (The Mist) as a couple attending the launch party of their gaming app Werewolves Awaken. But when a guest is mysteriously found dead, they question who could be the killer, as everyone becomes a suspect and player in a deadly real-life version of the game.

For a low-budget genre film, Beast Within has some truly fantastic effects work – from the over the top violence, blood...

But even these brave volunteers are not prepared for what lies beyond the threshold. Tagline: "This Game Has No Players - Only Prey." Beast Within has already been released in several territories in 2020. Now, the film is set to show on DVD this February, through Stonecutter Media. In the film, a game developer invites several guests to a VIP event. Here, a publicity stunt leads to murder and a growing mystery.  Beast Within was co-directed by Chris Green and Steven Morana. Together, they have brought a familiar cast to the screen, including: Colm Feore (Thor), Ari Millen (The Oak Room), Holly Deveaux ("The Mist"), Art Hindle (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and many more. These filmmakers have brought something unique to the screen, based on the film's rabid reception. Stonecutter Media will have Beast Within show-up at DVD stores this February 23rd.

For a low-budget genre film, Beast Within has some truly fantastic effects work – from the over the top violence, blood and copious amounts of guts to the werewolf transformations and make-up effects,...

Updated for October 2020

What ever would we do without horror?

So much of our daily life is built around logic and known, verifiable facts, and for some, the rest of the time must be supplemented with comforting reassurances that everything is going to be alright. Well if the last year has taught us anything… that’s not the case. Perhaps this is why horror hounds know the best way to face abstract fears is to confront them head on… and preferably with a screen in the way.

So, with Halloween around the corner, we figured it’s time to get in touch with our illogical, terrified animal brain. That’s where horror and horror movies in particular come in. Gathered here are the best horror...

Richard Dreyfuss Gets A Space Worthy Showcase With “Astronaut”
How long has it been since Richard Dreyfuss got a proper starring vehicle? No matter what answer you give, the most apt one is this: too long. Well, this weekend, that changes with the release of Astronaut, an independent drama about a man hoping to become an astronaut late in life. Dreyfuss elevates the material, which could get a bit of an extra push considering the recent anniversary of man walking on the moon. Renewed interest in Nasa and space exploration might help put a bit of a bonus spotlight on this one, though Dreyfuss himself is enough of a selling point. Nothing too special is happening here, but it’s a small scale movie that does just enough right in order to warrant a recommendation. The film is a light drama about an older gentleman finally trying to achieve a lifelong dream. Angus (Dreyfuss) was once a highly respected civil engineer,...

Fantasia Review: ‘Astronaut’ Finds Richard Dreyfuss Looking to the Stars
It’s the beginning of the end for Angus Stewart (Richard Dreyfuss). His wife recently passed after a difficult and costly bout with dementia, his heart isn’t what it used to be, and his family is unsure about what to do to help him adjust. While his daughter Molly (Krista Bridges) and grandson Barney (Richie Lawrence) want him to move in, his son-in-law Jim (Lyriq Bent) can’t help wondering if enduring the strain of another aging parent on a daily basis isn’t good for his wife’s health. Angus will honestly agree to whatever course of action they decide because he knows the inevitable burden being in their house creates whether they’d admit it or not. As long as he can still look up at the stars, he’ll live anywhere.

So of course he grows giddy with excitement when writer/director Shelagh McLeod gives him...

Review: ‘The Void’ is a Surreal Hybrid of ‘The Thing’ and ‘Hellraiser’
I was recently comparing directorial culture today with that of the 80s and 90s, referencing how new technology has allowed a disintegration of the old school “pay your dues” mentality. Forty years ago you had artists working their way up under the tutelage of established directors through the more niche technical departments. See James Cameron (matte painter on Escape from New York) and Joe Johnston (visual effects on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as examples. I’m not saying this type of mailroom intern to studio executive evolution isn’t still possible or relevant, just that young filmmakers can currently make a calling card film like the $750,000 budgeted Safety Not Guaranteed and find themselves helming a $150 million blockbuster like Jurassic World in only three years.

Is that talent? Luck? A bit of both, surely. But I still admire the idea of learning before jumping, earning the big...

Review: The Void, Grim, No-Nonsense Horror
Following its Frontieres market pitch a few years ago and a successful Indigogo campaign, The Void shot in Canada last year with Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Welsh, Ellen Wong, and Art Hindle. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest 2016 in Austin to a packed house, with producer Casey Walker and directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski in attendance. The Void draws inspiration from a number of horror influences, including Hellraiser, The Beyond, H.P. Lovecraft, and Lucio Fulci.    Those expecting the absurd comedic touches of Aston-6 (the filmmaking collaborative of which Gillespie and Kostanski are part) are in for a surprise, because The Void is grim. However, those who have been paying attention know not to expect any funny business here, unless your idea of laughs is a Rob...

The Void of the Womb Births a Devil: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Screen Media Films. Directors/writers: Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. Cast: Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Aaron Poole, Art Hindle and Stephanie Belding. The Void is an upcoming horror release, from Canadian filmmakers Astron 6. This team has been responsible for a number of decent horror features, including: Manborg (2011), Father's Day (2011), The Editor (2014) and others. Their latest film deals with the horrors of birth and the possible aftermath of death? The film does not have an answer to mortality, or immortality, though. Much of the film takes place in hell and veteran horror fans will see some of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987), here. In costume, makeup and setting, this film wears its influences on its sleeve. This viewer enjoyed the practical effects, in the film. But, the film's theme and message comes across as convoluted, for at least one viewer.

Have Yourself A Movie Little Christmas: 2016 Edition
I’m guessing that you, just like most of us, have always had seasonal favorites when it comes to movies that attempt to address and evoke the spirit of Christmas. Like most from my generation, when I was a kid I learned the pleasures of perennial anticipation of Christmastime as interpreted by TV through a series of holiday specials, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and even musical variety hours where the likes of Bing Crosby and Andy Williams and Dean Martin et al would sit around sets elaborately designed to represent the ideal Christmas-decorated living room, drinking “wassail” (I’m sure that’s what was in those cups) and crooning classics of the season alongside a dazzling array of guests. (We knew we were moving into a new world of holiday cheer when David Bowie joined Bing Crosby for...

Black Christmas Collector's Edition Blu-ray: "The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sigma prepare for the festive season, a stranger begins to stalk the house.

A series of obscene phone calls start to plague the residents of the sorority and it becomes clear that a psychopath is homing in on the sisters with dubious intentions. Blu-ray Review: Black Christmas Reigns
Canadian director Bob Clark (A Christmas Story, Murder By Decree) tragically left this mortal realm in a car crash in 2007, but his legacy of work lives on. He worked in several genres, but in horror, his 1970s masterpiece Black Christmas is revered by both fans and filmmakers. It's easy to see why when you watch the movie. Its fantastic cast John Saxon, Olivia Hussey, Art Hindle, Keir Dullea, and Margo Kidder stars in a film that's both scary and pushes hot topic buttons (abortion) that are sadly still relevent today. A 2006 remake had a chilly reception, and the original remains unsurpassed. After all, Black Christmas is said to have influenced John Carpenter's Halloween. The dread that Clark created was palpable and still quite effective; in fact, the...

Blu-ray Review: Black Christmas (1974) Collector’s Edition
There is no definitive answer as to what the first slasher movie really is. Many point to Michael Powell's Peeping Tom or even Psycho as the film that launched the genre. Others suggest it's Mario Bava’s Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve) that invented the slasher tropes. Some still say it's John Carpenter's original Halloween, a movie that, even if it is not the first slasher movie ever made, can still be called the most influential. It (and Bava’s Bay of Blood) is the movie that producer Sean Cunningham was ripping off when he made the original Friday the 13th, the copycat that launched a thousand more copycats. There has been a push in the last 10–15 years, though, to recognize Bob Clark's 1974 film Black Christmas (aka Silent Night, Evil Night) as the first “real” slasher, as a clear line can be drawn...

The Void draws inspiration from a number of horror influences, including Hellraiser, The Beyond, H.P. Lovecraft, and Lucio Fulci. Drive-In Dust Offs: The Brood (1979)
The Dead Zone (1983) is where director David Cronenberg turned from the horrors of the body to the torture of the soul. But before that, he made tentative steps towards adding a layer of vulnerability to his work, in the very personal and frightening The Brood (1979). It’s still rooted in the tactile, but listen closely and you can hear whispers of humanity piercing the skin.

Which is to take nothing away from his earlier works; Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977) are both potent allegories (and gory allies) on class warfare and sexual promiscuity. But The Brood was written by Cronenberg while going through a divorce and nasty custody battle, and while it mostly maintains a safe distance from emotional investment for the viewer, the beginnings of a sympathetic point of view start to take shape.

Released by New World Pictures in May, on a budget of $1.4 million Can, The Brood made some...
