Soundbite: Composer Stephen Schwartz on Bob Fosse, of TV Series ‘Fosse/Vernon’
Chicago – The final episode of the FX Network’s miniseries “Fosse/Vernon” airs on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019, concluding one of the more fascinating explorations of a historic show business couple. Bob Fosse and Gwen Vernon were titans of Broadway, and one of Bf’s collaborators was Stephen Schwartz, the composer of Pippin, which Fosse directed and choreographed.

Stephen Schwartz was a young wunderkind when he collided with Bob Fosse. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon in 1968 he worked in the music business, and in 1971 he wrote the music and lyrics for the classic “Godspell” musical. For his next project, he re-explored a college project named “Pippin, Pippin.” a musical fantasy based the 8th Century Prince Pepin/King Charlemagne legend. Retitled “Pippin,” the musical was assigned to director/choreographer Bob Fosse, who helped Schwartz (with a book by Roger O. Hirson) create a smash hit. The original Broadway run was 1,944 performances from...

The Bridge at Remagen
What’s the best true-story WW2 combat film for pure-grit, no-nonsense tanks ‘n’ bombs ‘n’ crazy mayhem action on a giant scale? This non-stop battle epic gets my vote. George Segal and Ben Gazzara’s infantry dogs are suitably tough, cynical and desperate, especially when they’re repeatedly sent into danger. The history is fairly accurate — there was indeed a race to seize the last bridge across the River Rhine.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Demon Seed
Demon Seed (1977) was the latest in an ever growing subgenre of science fiction film: Technodoubt (okay, I just made that up). But as the world started to catch up with its imagination (Apple Computers was born in ’76), and technology raged forward like a silicon locomotive, Hollywood searched for ways to exploit mankind’s natural fear of progress. From the dangerously malfunctioning Hal in 2001 (1968), to the murderous androids of Westworld (’73), rich veins of cybernetic carnage were mined for maximum cinematic paranoia. Demon Seed upped the ante by downloading the menace right into the home.

Released in April by MGM, the film was not a commercial success by any means, but certainly drew attention from critics due to its unusual (and quite absurd) high concept story, a showcase performance from Julie Christie, and a piqued interest in director Donald Cammell. Regardless of the gateway, Demon Seed remains a unique genre treatise on dominance and loss.

Theater Review: Revival of ‘Pippin’ Still Has Magic to Do
Chicago – It is the simple, timeless stories that work best when they are mounted again on Broadway, and the musical “Pippin” stays true to that assertion. Taking the concepts and the songs from a play that debuted in 1972, and featuring one of those original cast members in a key role, the National Touring revival of “Pippin” is being performed in Chicago at the Cadillac Theatre until August 9th, 2015.

Play Rating: 4.0/5.0

The revival expands upon the scope of Pippin, the title character, by setting his musically narrated tale within a circus setting, where the various performers act out his journey. The bright, splashy atmosphere melded perfectly with the great music and lyrics of the legendary Stephen Schwartz, and the ensemble – including a welcome and surprising Adrienne Barbeau – brought a soulfulness to themes of love, war, royalty and the ordinary life. It all comes magically alive on a stage full of tricks,...

Top 10 Musicals That Should Be Made Into Movies
There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.

Oscar 2015: Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return as Oscar show producers (photo: Craig Zadan and Neil Meron) Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be back as producers of the 2015 Oscar ceremony, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced yesterday, April 21, 2014. 'Pippin' Movie: The Big Top Is Coming to the Big Screen
Broadway fans, rejoice: "Pippin" is set to get a movie adaptation.

Deadline reports that Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the pair behind Oscar-winning musical turned movie-musical "Chicago," will produce the project, based on the 1972 Tony winner about a young prince searching for meaning in his life. Zadan and Meron will re-team with Harvey Weinstein, who also produced "Chicago, for the adaptation.

"Pippin" was written by Roger O. Hirson with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz ("Godspell," "Wicked"). Directed by Broadway legend Bob Fosse, it was a smash when it debuted in the '70s, winning five Tony awards. Its recent return to Broadway snagged four additional Tonys at this year's ceremony, including Best Revival.

Zadan and Meron are also enjoying some recent success, thanks to their popular live staging of "The Sound of Music" on NBC, which pulled in the network's highest non-sports ratings in years. They also produced the 2013 Oscar telecast,...

Theater Review: Big Top Pippin
Turn on. Tune in. Sing out? The history of counterculture chic in musicals is mostly a buried one, because few of the shaggy works that exemplified the genre proved to be worth reviving. Not that every show featuring floral garlands and vests embroidered with antiwar slogans was bad, but tofu has a short shelf life.Of the two that survived in the best shape, only Hair is echt-hippie, coming as it did right on the heels of the Summer of Love in 1967. The other, Pippin, arrived a microgeneration later, in 1972 — and what a difference those five years make. Both have infectiously appealing scores, but whereas Hair’s book is unfocussed, Pippin’s (by Roger O. Hirson) is unforgivable. The air of tragic innocence in the former has, by the latter, soured into a dippy find-yourself whine. That and the iconic status of the original staging by Bob Fosse (whose version...

'Smashed' Director to Adapt 'Pippin' & 'Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock'
After directing last year's indie Smashed, and the much-buzzed about 2013 Sundance selected The Spectacular Now (arriving in theaters this August), director James Ponsoldt is filling up his future slate pretty quickly. Earlier this year, Ponsoldt became attached to an adaptation of the young adult novels known as The Pure Trilogy for Fox 2000, and now he has two more adaptations. Deadline reports Ponsoldt has two deals at The Weinstein Company to script a new version of Pippin, and also adapt and direct Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock, based on the novel by Matthew Quick, author of last year's Silver Linings Playbook. Pippin is the classic stage musical with music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. A revival of the show is headed to Broadway later this year, so there's no time like the present to send the story to the big screen, especially after...

James Ponsoldt to Adapt the Broadway Musical Pippin and Write/Direct an Adaptation of Matthew Quick Novel Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock
After a successful Oscar campaign for The Weinstein Company's Silver Linings Playbook, TWC is already lining up author Matthew Quick's upcoming novel, Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock.  Writer/director James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now) has been tapped to both pen and direct the adaptation.  It tells the tale of a boy who, on his birthday, plans to take a gun to school and kill his former best friend and himself. Keeping it all in the family, TWC has also signed Ponsoldt to draft a screenplay of the 1970s Broadway musical Pippin, from Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz.  The play features a mysterious performance troupe who narrate the story of a young prince on his quest for meaning in his life.  Hit the jump for more on both projects. Deadline reports that Ponsoldt and The Weinstein Company will collaborate on both the Pippin adaptation and the feature treatment of Forgive Me,...

Weinstein Co. Sets James Ponsoldt To Script ‘Pippin,’ And Write/Helm New Novel By ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ Author
James Ponsoldt in Smashed (2012)
Exclusive: The Weinstein Company is doubling down on James Ponsoldt, the writer-director of The Spectacular Now and Smashed. TWC has made two big deals with Ponsoldt: He’ll script a movie adaptation of the venerable musical Pippin, and he’s also been set to adapt and direct Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock, the upcoming novel by Matthew Quick. Quick’s Silver Linings Playbook was an Oscar-season hit for TWC. Nobody was giving out much in the way of details, but Pippin is based on the musical about the son of King Charlemagne and his attempt to find his place in the world. The original had music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson. Bob Fosse directed the original production, and a revival is headed to Broadway later this year. As for the Quick novel, the book will be published in August by Little, Brown Books For Young readers.
