The Offspring’s “The Kids Aren’t Alright” Hits 1 Billion Streams on Spotify
Image
Shortly after the release of their new album Supercharged, The Offspring have achieved another milestone: “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” a song off their 1998 album Americana and one of the band’s biggest hits to-date, has earned 1 billion streams on Spotify.

“The Kids Aren’t Alright” marks the second song by The Offspring to join the Spotify Billion’s Club after their 2008 hit “You’re Gonna Go Far Kid” achieved the accolade over the summer. The band celebrated the milestone this past weekend at San Diego’s Punk in the Park festival, announcing the achievement on-stage and having fans send in their congratulations to the band. Watch their celebratory video below.

Now over 25-years-old, “The Kids Aren’t Alright” has been one of The Offspring’s best-performing singles for years, officially reaching platinum status from the RIAA in September 2021. Written about the disillusionment and failures of a generation of young...

Nofx Play Marathon Guest-Filled Set for Final Show Ever: Photos, Video + Setlist
Image
Nofx wrapped up their farewell tour with three gigs at Berth 46 in San Pedro, California, over the weekend, including their final show ever on Sunday (October 6th). For the very last gig, the veteran punk band played a marathon 33-song set that included notable guest appearances.

All three shows featured festival-style lineups, beginning with sets in the early afternoon. Sunday’s lineup included Fishbone, Subhumans, The Flatliners, Codefendants, Frank Turner, The Vandals, and Pennywise, leading up to Nofx’s headlining set.

Among the special guests during Nofx’s Sunday set was former Mighty Mighty Bosstones guitarist and current record executive/producer Nate Albert on the song “180 Degrees.” A couple songs later, Rancid singer-guitarist Tim Armstrong joined Nofx for a cover of Rancid’s “Radio.”

During the encore, Nofx covered Bad Religion’s “We’re Only Gonna Die” with that band’s Brett Gurewitz and Jay Bentley. And the final song of the night,...

The Offspring Joined Onstage by Yungblud for “Self Esteem” at Swiss Festival: Watch
Image
The Offspring brought out a special guest, rising UK alt-rock star Yungblud, during their set at the Openair Gampel festival in Switzerland.

Prior to their performance of “Self Esteem,” The Offspring’s Dexter Holland took a moment to address the crowd.

“One of the cool things about playing these festivals is that you get to play with other people and meet other people, and we met some cool people,” Holland said. “We met this great young man today, we thought we should bring him out to play a song with us, what the hell. ‘Cause that’s what it’s all about, right? It’s not about the photo op; it’s about the camaraderie.”

At this point, Holland and guitarist Noodles introduced Yungblud, who appeared from backstage and immediately started calling for a moshpit before the song had even started.

“This is a fucking dream come true for me,...

Holland appropriately deemed “Light It Up” as a “Full-speed-ahead juggernaut” in a statement, saying “This character in the song is fed up, he’s had enough, and he’s gonna light it up. He’s ready for a fight. And I definitely sense a lot of that around me. Growing up, some of my favorite songs were by punk bands that were just like, ‘I’m sick of your shit.

The Offspring Announce New Album Supercharged, Unveil Lead Single “Make It All Right”: Stream
Image
The Offspring have announced their 11th studio album, Supercharged, arriving October 11th. The punk veterans also offered up the lead single, “Make It All Right.”

The feel-good song is ripe for the summertime with a catchy “ba-ba-da” sing-a-long refrain, anthemic power-pop chords, and the imitable and endearingly nasally voice of Dexter Holland. The track oozes positivity and joy.

“We wanted this record to have pure energy — from the start to the finish! That’s why we called it Supercharged,” remarked Holland in a press release. “From the height of our aspirations to the depths of our struggles, we talk about it all on this record…in a way that celebrates the life that we share and where we are now. Our single ‘Make It All Right’ is a great example of this because it talks about the people in our lives who make us feel...

Keep ’Em Separated! 30 Years of the Offspring’s ‘Smash’
Image
The Offspring’s “Come Out and Play” (you know, the “gotta keep ’em separated” song) was all over MTV in 1994 — with a video that cost all of $5,000. The Nineties were full of unlikely breakthrough acts, but the Offspring were one of the few bands of the era who made it to the mainstream without even leaving their indie label, Epitaph.

In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Offspring frontman Dexter Holland looks back on his band’s hit-packed 1994 album Smash, which turns 30 this year. Go here for the podcast provider of your choice,...

The Offspring Joined by Members of Sum 41 and Simple Plan for Rousing Version of “Why Don’t You Get a Job?”: Watch
Image
The Offspring‘s recently wrapped “Let the Bad Times Roll” tour featured support from Sum 41 and Simple Plan — one of the strongest pop-punk tour packages in recent memory.

The trek ended earlier this month, but during the second to last show on September 2nd at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, members of all three bands shared the stage for a surging run through of The Offspring’s ska-tinged number “Why Don’t You Get a Job?”

The epic moment occurred toward the end of the main portion of The Offspring’s headlining set. For the first time on the tour, the band was joined onstage by tourmates Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 and Pierre Bouvier of Simple Plan.

The two form a veritable punk-rock triumvirate with The Offspring frontman Dexter Holland, as their voices stack in joyous harmony during the song’s chorus refrain. The pro-shot footage...

Every Jackass Cast Member With A Side Hustle
Image
The stars of the Jackass franchise are known for their death-defying stunts and hilarious pranks, but two of the cast members also have side hustles that consist of selling tacos and hot sauce. Begun as a reality series on MTV in the early 2000s, Jackass has since spawned multiple feature films and branched out with a number of spinoffs starring members of its stunt-comedy troupe. Over the years, Jackass cast members have also acted in other movies, played sports professionally, performed stand-up comedy, and become investors in various commercial enterprises.

Considering the Jackass gig is not consistent — the latest of the theatrically released Jackass movies, Jackass Forever, arrived more than a decade after its predecessor — it makes sense that the cast members have other moneymaking ventures. Plus, through Jackass and their additional activities, the stars of the franchise have become rich and famous enough to lend their names and their...

John Stamos, Chimp Enjoy Wild Night at Strip Club in the Offspring’s ‘We Never Have Sex Anymore’ Video
Image
John Stamos and a chimpanzee enjoy a wild night at the strip club in the new video for the Offspring’s “We Never Have Sex Anymore.”

The video spotlights a married couple — played by a pair of chimps — going through the boring motions of day-to-day life. The husband, fed up with the situation, drives off mid-video to a strip club, where he hangs out with the Full House actor and a bevy of dancers. The chimp then returns home to his wife, satisfied with the brief dalliance in the single life.

The Offspring’s Dexter Holland on Cali Punk Pride and Why We’ve Seen the Worst of Covid
Image
“Oh, baby, let the bad times roll,” the Offspring sing on the title track to their new album, resigning themselves to a world in peril. It’s the stalwart California punk band’s first studio LP in nearly a decade, and their first for Concord after a lengthy run on Capitol, but the label change and the departure of their longtime bassist haven’t blunted the Offspring’s edge. Working with producer Bob Rock (Metallica), they set doom-and-gloom lyrics (as heard on the shrug-emoji title track and the prescient “This...

Things Get Weird in the Offspring’s ‘Let the Bad Times Roll’ Video
Image
The Offspring have revealed a video for their new single “Let the Bad Times Roll” — and it’s as trippy as you’d expect.

The clip features the band performing the track (a nod to the Cars’ “Let the Good Times Roll”) as teens get in sticky situations — cellphones attack, kitty screen savers come to life, and mobs enter bedrooms surrounded by flying viruses.

The band dropped “Let the Bad Times Roll” last month. It’s the title track to their upcoming album out April 16th — their first in nearly a decade.

Hear Offspring’s ‘Let the Bad Times Roll,’ From First Album in Nine Years
Image
The Offspring return to their signature mix of guileless pop-punk and forked-tongue irony on “Let the Bad Times Roll,” the title track off their upcoming record, which will be their first in nearly a decade.

Although the title puns off the Cars, the track starts off sounding a bit more like the Police, as Dexter Holland mewls the song title over acoustic guitar before the band settles into a hard rock groove and he sings to his lover, “Let me know what you decide, apathy or suicide,” as he sardonically...

The Offspring Cover ‘Tiger King’ Star Joe Exotic’s ‘Here Kitty Kitty’
Joe Exotic in Tiger King (2020)
The Offspring delivered a sprightly rendition of Tiger King star Joe Exotic’s “Here Kitty Kitty,” performing in face masks in a nod to the Covid-19 era.

“She was a rich woman, she had rich tastes/She felt the blood runnin’ through her veins,” frontman Dexter Holland sings, accompanied by guitarist Noodles and a drummer in a tiger suit. “She liked the life she had/She loved her big cats and the beauty of bein’ untamed.”

As everyone who has binged Tiger King knows, the track alludes to Exotic’s insistent accusal that his nemesis,...

The Offspring and 311’s Covers of Each Other’s Hits Are Well-Meaning Duds
Offspring
The Offspring and 311 are heading out on a 29-date co-headlining tour on July 25th – an idea we fully support for catching both the rays of summer and the waves of late-Nineties nostalgia. But to promote the Never-Ending Summer Tour, the two multi-platinum bands have decided to cover each others’ hits and the results are the musical equivalent of a key party that gives all the participants chlamydia.

The Offspring tackle 311’s 1996 breakthrough “Down.” Says guitarist Noodles in a press release: “We tried to do a Ramones-like version to serve as...

Interview: Nobuo Uematsu, Arnie Roth & Distant Worlds
This interview first appeared on Steel Bananas.

Nerdventures: Familiar Songs From Distant Worlds

When I went to summer camp, the oldest boy’s dorm — and focus point of younger male’s uncool envy — would always get up to antics which their disciples could only aspire to. One of their common flare ups would take place in the mess hall. During any too-dull-to-stand moments or amid any too-hyped-to-ignore cheer offs, they would take it upon themselves to stand on their chairs and in an uncoordinated harmony of vocoded ‘doots’ and ‘deets’ the good old boys would give their try at impersonating the instantly recognizable Super Mario theme. Between the three Game Boy Colours that circulated my padawan dorm, it became clear that this could actually be the second oldest/third youngest crew on camp’s chance to shine, and so it was suggested to my counsellor that perhaps we’d ‘back...

The Offspring Get 'Fly,' Indulge In Americana: Wake-Up Video
When Green Day ushered in the next wave of punk with Dookie back in 1994, they opened the floodgates for a number of bands who broke through to the mainstream. In addition to Rancid and (later) Blink-182, by far the biggest success of that next wave was the Offspring. Built from the wreckage of Los Angeles hardcore and stoned California skate punk, the Offspring crashed radio and MTV with head-banging shout-alongs like "Self Esteem" and "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)," which pushed their 1994 album Smash to multi-platinum status. After signing to a major label and stumbling a bit with their 1997 follow-up Ixnay on the Hombre, the band returned to the upper echelons of the Billboard charts with Americana, which was released on this day in 1998.

Americana saw the Offspring expanding on their core sound and adding elements of metal and prog rock to their buzzsaw approach. The clearest expansion...

Video Premiere: The Offspring's 'Kristy, Are You Doing Okay'
The Offspring have come out, bringing a music video for their single "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay". In the Lex Halaby-directed video, singer Dexter Holland is seen strumming his guitar and performing the track in a room full of ripped-off notes stuck on its wall.

"Kristy, Are You Doing Okay" is one of the songs listed in The Offspring's eight major studio album "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace". Written by Dexter Holland, the single comes from the production hands of Bob Rock, the mastermind behind Metallica's 1991 self-titled studio album.

"Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" itself has hit the U.S. market since June 2008 via Columbia Records. The record debuted at number 10 on Billboard Hot 200, selling around 46,000 copies in its first week in stores.
